Year in Review – Peloton’s Top News Stories of 2024
This year of Peloton News was full of surprises – from instructor updates, including teaching changes, departures, and even weddings – to groundbreaking new Strength programming, dynamic corporate partnerships, and new leadership announcements – and even Olympic gold! This year gave us a lot to talk about, so let’s recap the top stories that defined our community in our special (and totally anecdotal, non-scientifically researched) 2024 Year in Review!
Peloton Instructor Changes Shake Up the Schedule in 2024
Just when you thought you had your personal favorites and weekly schedule sorted out, Peloton likes to keep you on your toes by making changes (not by making you do calf stretches)! Most of these schedule modifications have been well received, particularly the later class time starts that benefitted West Coast early birds, as well as having more opportunities to see instructors in more modalities. The downside, however, was that if you liked someone in one modality and now they are in more, they are likely producing less content in the place you first liked them… we know they are superheroes but they can’t bend the space/time continuum to be everywhere! But, as they say, if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you, and in 2024 we saw the following changes in who’s teaching what:
- Camila joined the Strength team and launched the first Spanish cycling series
- Erik and Mariana joined the Tread team, along with Emma joining for teaching Hikes
- Camila, Katie, and Joslyn joined the Strength team, along with Rebecca and Irene teaching Pilates
- Becs joined the Row team
- Christian “officially” joined the Power Zone team
Wait… maybe these folks *are* superheroes!
Strength Training Gets a Boost with New Classes and Opportunities
This year saw Peloton really leaning into its Strength game with some pretty sweet programming updates. Members were buzzing all year about the ways that Peloton has made it more accessible to develop and reach their strength goals. Here’s a rundown of everything Peloton did to help us up our game (and our reps!):
- Andy’s new Density 2 collection/program incorporated a weight bench for the first time at Peloton, enabling members who use barbells or heavier dumbbells to really maximize their workouts (don’t worry, the bench was optional and the classes are still amazing if you don’t have a bench!).
- New Benchmark classes in English and German were launched to help members get consistent with their routines.
- New Splits with multiple instructors were introduced, giving us flexibility to choose instructors we liked and a weekly routine that we could commit to.
- Instructors expanded some of their signature series to offer us fun combo classes as a way to work in strength with other modalities: Jess Sims and Selena had a Floor Bootcamp 2; Matty started Walking Bootcamps on the Tread; and Jess Sims’ famous “Sims 60” killer Tread Bootcamp also was offered as a Bike Bootcamp
- Instructors also launched new Strength classes including: Ben’s Stronger You; Set the Barre with Ally and Hannah C; Strong Core Strong Body 2 with Irene; Strength for Soccer with Erik and Marcel M; and Pilates with Equipment with Kristin (before she left… see below!) and Anna, who also built new and popular Yoga + Pilates classes. This year even saw Camila join Rad among the instructors offering Strength classes En Espanol!
- One of the buzziest stories of 2024 in this modality was the Strength+ App Beta Test. For more on that check out our companion article about 2024’s Top 10 Feature Drops!
There’s no doubt about it, 2024’s programming was heavy (get it?) in the Strength category!
Peloton Meets Lululemon: Exploring the Exciting 2024 Partnership
Peloton’s partnership with Lululemon, launched back in the fall of 2023, really took shape in 2024 in the form of not one but two special Lululemon Members Weekends at PSNY. At these invitation-only events, Peloton members (who were also part of the Lululemon Membership Program) had access to special classes, swag, and studio takeover shenanigans. Here at The Clip Out we’re lucky to have Helper Bee Trish living her best Lulu life “on the list” so we got two fun insider peeks at these unique events, held in June and September. Check ‘em out!
Peloton Rocked Our Workouts with Musical Surprises
It’s no secret that Peloton has been increasing the scope and quantity of its Artist Series in recent years, and it seems like the All For One is here to stay. The surprising element of 2024 in music was the new opportunities created to interact with celebrity musicians in studio, while actually taking a class IRL! Members were star struck during AFO this year to actually have musicians like Keith Urban cozying up to them during Hannah Corbin’s AFO ride, and earlier in the year, during a special partnership, fans of Alex Toussaint were treated to an absolutely electric Lil Jon interacting with them during the ride. Additionally, Kane Brown appeared with Denis and Logan for a cycling and strength class respectively, during AFO, though no fans – er, members – were there for the recording. On the other side of the pond, Cliff built on the success of his Gloriously Gospel Ride series launched in 2023 by bringing in the BIG Gospel Choir who sang – while they were riding! – in a set of classes this year, including one ride that even featured Cliff’s own original recording! The London studio crew also enjoyed a new collaboration with Defected Records in 2024, which brought in a number of DJs for live rides with several of them throughout the year, and a special Spotify playlist encapsulating all the amazing music from the series. Good stuff!
An Olympic Win for a Peloton Corporate Team Staffer
Speaking of celebrities, Peloton found unexpected notoriety at the 2024 Paris Olympics in champion crew racer Nick Mead! Nick works in Logistics in New York but also happened to become an Olympic gold medalist in Rowing over in Paris this summer. Watching the story of Team USA glide to glory brought a lot of joy to members around the world! We also enjoyed watching Becs serve as a commentator for Olympic running!
It’s Not 2024 Without Talking About Taylor Swift
Swiftie or not, you can’t deny that with 2024 concluding the two-year run of her incredible Eras Tour, Taylor is still top of mind as the year comes to a close. Remember when she surprised us at the Grammy awards earlier this year by announcing she had created The Tortured Poets Department album during the two previous years, secretly? And then it dropped in April? While she was still in the middle of touring? Well, Peloton was as buzzing as much as the rest of us, especially the Peloton Swifties. Some of them were invited for a top secret TTPD ride recorded with Robin which left those uninvited a bit jealous! When the ride was released members witnessed how Robin good naturedly – but now infamously – missed some of the song lyrics and the melodies as she sang along. No shade from me on this – I’m no Swiftie and would have probably done the same – but it was definitely “note”worthy when it happened as part of this year’s stories!
Leadership Shifts at Peloton: New CEO Takes the Helm
We can’t resist a good dad joke, so let’s just say “there’s a new Chief in town and it’s not Travis Kelce” (sorry, I had to do it after talking about Taylor!) – it’s Peloton’s new CEO, Peter Stern! This year saw some pretty major changes in executive leadership. Former President and CEO Barry McCarthy departed in early May (along with an announcement of a 15% global workforce reduction). This development was followed by interim internal leadership keeping the helm of the ship all summer and fall, until the big news of Peter Stern coming aboard in late October in the head role was announced. We’re excited to see what his leadership will bring in 2025… we’re ready for a year with fewer surprises coming out of Corporate, thank you very much! (We did enjoy the surprise “interview” performed by Jess Sims… ICYMI you can watch our new CEO flexing his pushup form here!)
Familiar Faces Say Farewell as Multiple Instructors Depart in 2024
While technically this is probably the most talked about news of 2024, I like to end on a happy note so I can’t wrap up this article here. Yes, it’s the Instructor Departure story! In 2024 A LOT of us were caught by surprise on this topic, but sadly no one more than Kristin and Kendall, whose contracts were not renewed at the annual period in spring. We lost Ross from the roster as well this year, although he announced his decision ahead of contract season, to focus on outreach around his book release; and Tobias from London left shortly after the contract period, somewhat mysteriously. Members are still grieving the loss of Kristin and Kendall months later, as their special personalities and unique programming left voids that many don’t think have been filled quite yet.
On the heels of this shuffle, Peloton also announced what they are calling an instructor “off season” whereby the live schedule would be reorganized giving instructors longer times off of work, ostensibly so they can pursue their other ventures, or just rest their bodies, or travel, really whatever they fancy. Sounds like an interesting opportunity for some, but not all, and Members have not been convinced that this is such a great idea (especially after a somewhat repetitive fall schedule).
Members had Front Row Seats at Two Amazing Instructor Weddings
Happy days are here again, especially if you are one of four Peloton instructors who got married in 2024 – to each other! Yes, in the ultimate edition of workplace romances, Leanne and Ben were married, as were Rebecca and Andy. Fans of these instructors – and let’s face it, fans of weddings and love and all the good things – could not get enough of their news! Both couples actually had two ceremonies, smaller for family and then spectacular with friends – and Peloton instructors – so the matrimony math was really mathing at Peloton this year! Being armchair travelers at these two beautiful celebrations in multiple global locations was a real treat for Members. Sure, most of us will never actually be on the guest list, but given how much time we all spend with these folks in our daily lives, and how much impact they have on our own health and wellbeing, what better way to sign off from 2024 than with memories of their special days?
