Peloton History: From Startup to 7 Million Members

Peloton was founded on January 3, 2012 by John Foley, Tom Cortese, Yony Feng, Hisao Kushi, and Graham Stanton with a simple premise: bring the energy of a boutique fitness class into the home. At the time, the concept of a $2,000 internet-connected exercise bike seemed like a gamble. Within a decade, it had changed how millions of people think about working out.

The early years (2012–2016) were about proving the idea was real. A 2013 Kickstarter campaign raised early funding and delivered the first bikes to backers in 2014. Peloton spent these years building its instructor roster, opening showrooms, and establishing Peloton Studios as the production hub for live and on-demand classes.

2018 and 2019 marked Peloton’s arrival as a mainstream brand. The company opened Peloton Studios New York — the flagship production facility that would become home to the live class experience members know today — and went public on the Nasdaq in September 2019 under the ticker PTON. The IPO valued the company at over $8 billion.

2020 was the year everything accelerated. As gyms closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Peloton became a household name almost overnight. Demand outpaced supply, waitlists stretched for months, and the company’s stock soared past $170 per share. For a moment, Peloton seemed unstoppable.

2021 and 2022 brought a difficult correction. A Tread+ safety recall, slowing post-pandemic demand, and supply chain challenges led to a dramatic reversal. In February 2022, John Foley stepped down as CEO. Barry McCarthy, former CFO of Spotify and Netflix, took over and began a sweeping restructuring — reducing headcount, renegotiating costs, and refocusing the business on software and subscriptions alongside hardware.

2023 saw Peloton relaunch its app with new tiered pricing, opening access to the class library without requiring Peloton equipment — a significant strategic shift toward becoming a fitness platform, not just a bike company.
