Deeper Than You Think, Boo

XOXO Cody: Deeper Than You Think, Boo!

Cody Rigsby’s book, “XOXO, CODY,”  is exactly what you think it would be – full of quips, sarcastic wit, and pop culture references.  After all, the subtitle is “An Opinionated Homosexual’s Guide to Self-Love, Relationships, and Tactful Pettiness.”

But the book is also what you might not think it would be – for a guy whose trademark saying is “’it ain’t that deep, Boo,” Cody reveals a lot about his less-than-ideal childhood, his struggles and mistakes in relationships, and conquering some very low moments as he struggled to get to the top (often while working three jobs).

Much of Cody’s book centers around his childhood and relationship with his Mom, Cindy.  If you have taken Cody’s rides you will hear references to Cindy quite often – she raised him as a single Mom and she also struggled with addiction and mental illness.  Cody acknowledges how this affected him, honestly talks about his struggle to make peace with his feelings about his childhood, and admits that he still sometimes has difficulty trying to figure out how much to take care of, versus enable, his Mom.  A touching revelation is that when he calls us all “Boo” in his classes, he’s repeating a nickname his mother always called him, not just using a pop culture reference.   He also tells us why he has that Mickey Mouse tattoo on his arm!

Cody also talks about his struggle to come out as a gay man in the 90s and how it led to his “radical self love.”  He tells us about his early days as a Peloton instructor, where he tried to find the right vibe for his classes, eventually realizing that just being himself was the right vibe.  He reveals his appreciation that through the Peloton platform he has been able to affect people and change minds about queer people- and credits Richard Simmons for inspiring him as a fitness instructor!

Cody struggled when he was filming  Dancing With the Stars, which was fraught with difficulties, including his relationship with his dance partner, getting covid, and his frequent travels from the east to west coasts throughout the filming of the show. He also shares with us that he almost quit the show and reveals how he was able to find the strength to continue.

As would be expected, Cody gives relationship advice from the heart, as well as from his own difficulties with relationships throughout his life.  He doesn’t hold back in giving us details about how he failed his partners and how he was able to “try again” with his most recent partner.

So pick up a copy of Cody’s book  and expect to receive some good, serious inspiration advice- along with some laughs, from the fun “Codyisms” we’ve all grown to know and love.
