Transcript:
crystal: Welcome to the Clip Out Podcast, episode 478. This is Crystal O’Keefe.
tom: And this is Tom O’Keefe.
crystal: Hi. Hi.
tom: 478.
crystal: I know.
tom: That’s a lot.
crystal: It is. It’s
tom: not real Spoilers numbers.
crystal: I know.
tom: But we’re closing in on 1,000 over there.
crystal: I know. That’s crazy. Yeah,
tom: so-
crystal: Just bonkers. You guys have been doing this forever.
tom: Forever.
tom: We are very old. So we, uh, we [00:01:00] predate talkies. That’s how long we’ve been, been doing it. Okay. So… Although we were talking this morning, I forget how we got on the topic but about… Oh, I know. We were discussing the history of our deodorant usage. This is-
crystal: This is more like a bonus topic
tom: I feel. I don’t even know if this qualifies for bonus, but, uh-
crystal: Well
tom: but rest assured, we do both use deodorant. Yes. And but we were just talking about the life cycle of deodorant. Not literally, like, how long it lasts on your body- Yeah … but how, like, in healthcare products in general, they come out, they’re a big deal, they’re super expensive, and then the next thing comes out, and it drops down a notch, and it drops down a notch, and then eventually it’s basically, like, borderline generic.
crystal: Yeah. Exactly.
tom: And, and so we were talking about how long I’d been using the brand- … that I’m currently using, and it’s, like, close to 40 years.
crystal: That’s,
tom: that’s- Sad
crystal: Wow. Yeah. Man. [00:02:00] I remember being young enough to be, like, impressed with myself when I could say I knew someone for 10 years. Yeah. And I was, like, 20, you know?
tom: And now you’re like, you refer to that as someone you just met.
crystal: Yeah, I mean, I mean, anything, like, it’s so funny because the kids feel like a year is forever. Sure. And when I was their age, I did too. For sure. Yeah. Like, that’s not a them thing. Yeah. But it’s just, like, a year is a blink, man. Yeah. When you get to be old, like, a year is just like, “Oh, I blinked and this year was over.”
tom: Yeah.
crystal: I can’t believe we’re in freaking August. Yeah. Like, where did the summer go? This is- And
tom: like-
crystal: This has been a hellish summer too. And
tom: late August.
crystal: Y- yeah. Yeah.
tom: So, mm.
crystal: Yeah. Anyway.
tom: Getting old.
crystal: Getting old.
tom: So before we get any older- Too late. What pray tell do you have in store for people this week?
crystal: Well, we’re gonna talk about this, the coolest feature that, the newest cool feature that Peloton is rolling out, these, uh, workout history [00:03:00] filters, and what it means, how you can use them, and why you may not have them yet.
tom: Oh.
crystal: Uh, we also have another… they’ve changed up some vocabulary in the different classes as well. We’re gonna talk about that.
tom: Okay.
crystal: Peloton stock news. We’ll talk about it.
tom: Sure.
crystal: Um, we’ve also got the CMO sharing the Peloton market strategy. We’ve got the latest dates that there are no cl- live classes at PSNY.
crystal: In addition, we also have an update to the Adrian Williams thing.
tom: Oh dear.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: Buckle up.
crystal: Yeah. Ac- actually, I feel like-
tom: No, I don’t think it’s bad ultimately, but I, yeah, we’ll get there.
crystal: We will get there. We will get there.
tom: We’ll get there. Let’s not have a discussion before the discussion.
crystal: That’s right.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Kirsten Ferguson is g- is going to be out until September. We’re gonna talk about that here, but also on the… I have to skip ahead to the bonus. I don’t- Oh … because I don’t think we put this in this part, but [00:04:00] her trip that she’s taking and- Yeah … what her boyfriend did, and it was, like, a really fun, unique thing.
crystal: Oh, it’s a good thing. It’s a great thing. Okay. I was
tom: like, “Oh, no.”
crystal: And, uh, you know, I had said not too long ago I felt like she was in love. Like, I think this is leading to… I think we got marriage coming up. Oh. I mean, that’s just my feeling. Right.
tom: You have no inside-
crystal: No inside. No, no, no, no, no. Um, I’m getting ahead of myself, but I have to tell you, I have to tell everybody in the bonus what he did, uh- Okay
crystal: as they were leading up to their vacation. It was really cool- All right … really fun. Um, we’re also gonna talk about Bex Gentry’s latest race. It’s a huge deal. Um, not to mention, we have Marcel Maurer being hospitalized. W- Oh … we’ll have all the details on that the legal details we’re allowed to share.
crystal: Makes it sound like I’ve got his hospital records here. Yes.
tom: We don’t wanna violate any HIPAA regulations.
crystal: We do not.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: And we also have, uh, the latest update on the Bryant Park yoga, the finale. They always do these [00:05:00] nice, uh- Yeah … these, during the summer, and the finale is coming up, so who all is invited in that?
tom: It’s funny, I know Bryant Park is, like, very popular, very well-known area of New York, but it’s funny. As, as tourists- Uh-huh … like, once we’ve gone to a place, then I feel a connection of like, “Oh, we’ve been there.” We’ve
crystal: been there.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: We didn’t ice skate ’cause I don’t have that s- I don’t have the ankles for that.
crystal: We walked around …
tom: I have the calves and ankles of a 10-year-old boy. And, uh, they’re in a closet upstairs. What? Ew. No, that took a turn. What
crystal: the… It did.
tom: But,
crystal: This is not real spoilers.
tom: But but we did the, the bumper cars-
crystal: We did, on ice … on
tom: ice, yeah. That
crystal: was fun.
tom: That was a lot of
crystal: fun. I enjoyed it.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Uh, also, we’re gonna talk about the latest of what is happening at Whoop. I just like saying Whoop. I
tom: know. I like it when you say
crystal: Whoop. Whoop.
tom: There we go. Well, before we get to all that shameless plugs, don’t forget we’re available on Apple Podcast, Spotify, iHeartTune, and wherever you find a podcast, you can find us.
tom: While you are there, be sure and follow us so you [00:06:00] never miss an episode. Maybe leave us a review. Super helpful. Greatly appreciated.
crystal: Yes. If- and a follow. A follow is always helpful and appreciated as well.
tom: Absolutely. And if you would like to support us with more than elbow grease- … you may do so over at Patreon, patreon.com/theclipout.
tom: Uh, it’s only $5 a month. Mm-hmm. And you get things other than just helping us. Yes. Like, you receive things-
crystal: Yes …
tom: in return. You receive ad-free episodes, you receive early episodes, and, uh, you receive a bonus episode every week. We do an extra show for you.
crystal: Mm-hmm.
tom: And this week over there we will be talking about who’s hanging out with Mumford & Sons- Mm-hmm
tom: and why.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: We w- Andy, uh, Spear has a post about self-talk.
crystal: Mm-hmm.
tom: Sometimes this podcast feels like self-talk.
crystal: It’s very different kind.
tom: Just ourselves. Uh, and then Cody has a post about five [00:07:00] things worth the money.
crystal: Let’s see if we agree.
tom: And, uh, yeah, we have thoughts.
tom: We have thoughts.
tom: And, uh, I I know what bougie is. Is there a level above bougie?
crystal: I’m sure there is ‘
tom: Cause-
crystal: I don’t know what it’s called. They- ‘Cause it gets there … they keep it a secret. They keep it a secret- Ah … from us, us, you know, regular folks. Right. They don’t want us to know that word. Once you start
tom: g- reaching the upper echelons- Mm
tom: of bougie, then someone from that category, they’ll reach out to you or one of their people will reach out to you- Right, right,
crystal: right …
tom: and say, “You’ve, we think you h- might have made it”-
crystal: To the next level … to
tom: the next level.
crystal: Whatever that is called.
tom: Whatever that is.
crystal: We don’t know.
tom: Would you like to hunt and kill a bald eagle with us?
tom: Or whatever they do. Whatever they do. We’re having an eagle barbecue- … and didn’t know if you wanted to drop by and enjoy eagle nuggets. I don’t know what they do. But we’re gonna talk about that over on Patreon, ’cause it, it does, for the most part [00:08:00] it’s normal, and then it takes a turn. It
crystal: does.
tom: And he even acknowledges it takes a turn.
tom: But it gets beyond bougie. And, uh, we will discuss that. Waiting for you over on the bonus. And i- if you wanna listen and you don’t wanna give us money, you get a seven-day free trial.
crystal: That’s right.
tom: So you could pop over and just see if it’s for you. Um, you also can find us on Facebook. Did I do that part? Uh, facebook, uh, .com- I don’t know.
tom: I wasn’t listening … slash theclipot. Neither was I, and I was talking. And you can, uh, find us on YouTube, where you can look at us. ‘Cause-
crystal: You did not do this part, ’cause I haven’t waved.
tom: Yeah, because- That was my wave … that’s a selling point. And sign up for the newsletter at theclipot.com where you get the links in a mostly weekly manner.
tom: So there you go. Let’s dig in, shall we?
crystal: We shall.
tom: workout history filters are rolling out on the Peloton
crystal: They are. And, uh, for the record, they are definitely [00:09:00] rolling out. Not everybody has these. So- In fact, most people do not have these Gotcha.
crystal: I actually did wonder if this was a beta, so few people have it.
tom: Gotcha.
crystal: But if it was a beta, it was not an announced beta. Okay. And a lot of times they give some indication. Sometimes you, sometimes you get a notification about it- Mm-hmm … or, uh, sometimes you’ll see things appear and then disappear.
crystal: This has not disappeared for people that have it, so, I, I… Full disclosure, I don’t actually know that this is gonna stick around for everyone, but I think it is, and I think it’s a very slow rollout.
tom: Gotcha.
crystal: Uh, they’re doing it a little bit at a time.
tom: You know, when I think about it-
crystal: Mm-hmm …
tom: and I do that rarely-
tom: That makes sense because you figure while the function of, like, sorting this isn’t probably that intricate from a coding standpoint the data usage to pull in In some cases, a decade- Uh-huh … of workout history for people.
crystal: [00:10:00] Could be a
tom: bit- That’s- …
crystal: intense …
tom: gotta be a lot.
crystal: I agree. Uh, and it is, there are a lot of things that you are able to filter on.
crystal: You are able to filter your classes by the most recent. You can go to the oldest-
tom: Mm-hmm …
crystal: which would be kind of fascinating-
tom: Yeah …
crystal: to see because, now, it- for people who have never wondered about this when Peloton first started, the only way you could get your data to look at your history, you could see the classes you would take, but, like, to actually- Yeah
crystal: do any deep dives on it.
tom: A FOIA request.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: You had to go in and download your entire history and export it, and then do whatever you wanted to do in Excel.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Which, like a big fat nerd, I did. And and, like, I really got into it. Like, I had graphs. Oh. Seeing my, my output over time. Yeah. Whether it was going up or down.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Uh, I was super, super into this. So, so being able to see this at a glance, not necessarily to that depth- Sure … but just being able to see your [00:11:00] classes. I would kind of really enjoy to go to my filter and look at my oldest classes. Yeah. Because I haven’t thought about those classes in so long.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: It would just be neat to kinda see what I used to do. Anyway, you could also look at your output high to low, your output low to high, your strive score hod, la, high to low and low to high. Yeah. Same with distance, long to short. So you can, like, there’s a lot of different ways- Yeah … you can sort this.
crystal: So to your point about it being a slow rollout on purpose, I do think that that makes sense. I mean, we’re talking about classes that aren’t even on the, they don’t even exist anymore.
tom: Right. And some of
crystal: them- And they haven’t existed for years. Right,
tom: that’s what I was gonna say. Some of these haven’t existed for almost a decade.
crystal: Yeah, and especially people, like, I am not a, a true OG. I feel OG adjacent because one, we started the podcast so early and we were, we bought the bike sight unseen-
tom: Right …
crystal: in the Midwest. We didn’t even know how to pronounce Peloton.
tom: Right.
crystal: So I feel like we are OG adjacent, [00:12:00] but there were people that had their bikes since the Kickstarter days, and those people have so many classes in their history Of instructors that no longer exist Yeah That’s just, I mean, that’s crazy to think about
tom: Yeah, ’cause I was wondering, I’m like, what about the people that took dry erase board
crystal: classes?
crystal: Yeah. Are those- Well, they wouldn’t even have a history of… I mean, they might have the name of the class- Right … but they wouldn’t have any of their metrics or-
tom: Yeah, I was like, would that even be banked? Like-
crystal: I don’t, I don’t know … yeah. I don’t know. It’s kinda, I’m kind of actually curious. Yeah. So if any of you OGs are still around- The real ones
crystal: listening to us The Kickstarter ones The Kickstarter OGs.
tom: Yeah
crystal: The ones that took dry abord- tri- dry erase board classes. Yeah I would love to know, when you get this history, what it looks like for you. Yeah Because, uh, I think that’s fascinating. Just completely fascinating.
tom: They just mail it to you on a stone tablet.
crystal: I was actually going back through our our posts on our website and, uh, it’s a long story, I won’t bore anybody away with it, but you know what came up for me? I had completely forgotten we did this.
tom: Mm-hmm.
crystal: We had a feature. [00:13:00] Do you remember how we had a person, I don’t wanna say their name ’cause I don’t even know if they do Peloton anymore, who would every week tell us what the most popular classes were?
crystal: Do you remember that?
tom: Oh my God, I feel awful.
crystal: Yeah. I- They would-
tom: That sounds vaguely familiar
crystal: They would count and we would, like, see where all the instructors were. So they, like, they totaled-
tom: Yeah …
crystal: each instructor and how many rides- Yeah … that, that pers- that instructor had. So you could… They actually totaled the most popular instructor-
tom: Was that, like, the data fairy or something like that?
crystal: Mm-hmm.
tom: Okay.
crystal: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. And, uh, it got too intense for obvious reasons. For sure. And they started purging things faster than… So it, it kind of became moo- but the… It was just a really, really, uh, interesting… I was like, “Oh my God, I completely forgot we did that.” Yeah. That was just fascinating- Yeah
crystal: little look at the history- … of this podcast and- Yeah … and Peloton.
tom: For sure. So, uh, Peloton has added circuit to its vocab.
crystal: Yeah. So in the past we’ve had strength classes. They have said, [00:14:00] like, it’s gonna be, you know, a series of moves, and now it’s a circuit. Now it’s, they have an official name. They’ve changed the name officially- Mm-hmm
crystal: in all of these classes going forward. And I feel like it means something. Yeah. I feel like this means something’s coming. Because before, when they would change something we’ve noticed there’s been a reason. Like, they broke out hikes, and then not long after that, they broke out walks. Mm-hmm.
crystal: And we got, we ended up getting walking metrics. Like you, I’m not saying it right. Um, your specific paces for your walking. Okay. Right? And that was like, that was kind of a precursor to that. So I feel like changing this vocabulary means something is coming. Setting something
tom: up.
crystal: I do. I do feel that way.
crystal: So I don’t know. Time will tell, but I think I’m right.
tom: You typically are, at least in regards to this stuff.
crystal: Oh, yeah. I get lots of wrong- Just to be- Just to be clear.
tom: Yeah, I don’t wanna inflate your ego.
crystal: I think we’re okay. Judging by [00:15:00] how many times people say to me and to you, we really should brag more about ourselves.
crystal: Like, they’re like- … “You should, you should put this out there. You should say this about yourself.” I’m like, “Oh, I don’t know about all that.”
tom: But the Internet’s so mean.
crystal: The Internet is so mean.
tom: The uh, pivoting back to Real Spoilers ever so briefly.
crystal: Okay.
tom: We actually had a snarky comment, not ironic- Okay
tom: dead serious-
crystal: Okay …
tom: on Real Spoilers YouTube channel. Mm-hmm. When, when we were talk- It was one of our comic book movie episodes, and somebody was, somebody actually wrote with a straight face, “You guys need to read more comics.” “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
crystal: Oh my God.
tom: They’re just like-
crystal: That’s so mean
tom: it’s like two of the three people on the podcast literally managed comic book stores.
crystal: Wow.
tom: Like, are you- Wow … kidding me?
crystal: You got mansplained to.
tom: You
crystal: neckbeard. What? And it [00:16:00] was probably some 18-year-old who doesn’t know anything. Who
tom: knows? I was just like, “Dude, if you only knew.” Ugh. If you only knew. So.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: Uh- Peloton had their earnings call, and of course, their stock immediately plummeted.
tom: Not Neutrogena plummeted.
crystal: No. It was not Neutrogena.
tom: But, but, uh, yeah, it dropped, like, 6%.
crystal: It di- it did and I have to say, I, I think this article actually came out, like, a week later.
tom: Yeah, and it… I don’t think it was necessarily directly related to that. It was, uh, a major investor.
crystal: It was. It was this, this Dave Einhorn Capital Management.
crystal: They fully liquidated their Peloton stake during the second quarter of 2026. That was disclosed on August 14th, and that r- made a reaction of the stock falling 6%, according to this article. Now-
tom: Yeah, I’m sure that triggered other people to go, “Whoa-” Whoa, whoa, whoa … “if they’re g- if they’re getting rid of it, I don’t want it.”
tom: Whoa. Um, [00:17:00] Dave Einhorn Investments doesn’t want it, and you can’t trust them because DEI, right?
crystal: I
tom: mean, right.
crystal: Dave Einhorn- Right …
tom: Investments, DEI. We all know that we’re not supposed to like that no more.
crystal: It’s funny because, uh, it’s actually called DME.
tom: Okay.
crystal: I don’t know why, but-
tom: I… Because they-
crystal: Dave’s Management- ‘Cause they don’t like
tom: DEI over there
crystal: Dave’s Management Equity.
tom: They’re like we’re tech bros, and we’re not having it.”
crystal: We’re not gonna take
tom: it. Yeah, so, uh, if you’re wondering what happened, that’s what happened.
crystal: Yeah. Peloton
tom: CMO Megan Embriss. Embrace? Embriss. Embriss.
crystal: That’s… We’re r- it’s Embriss.
tom: Embrissing the marketing strategies.
tom: Talking about the branding.
crystal: So she was on a podcast called, uh… I think it was
tom: called- Oh, so she will go on podcasts. If you’re listening, Megan, I’m just- That’s what side eye sounds like.
crystal: She was on a podcast called Best Brands on Earth. Maybe if we called it Best Peloton on Earth.
tom: Well, it’s [00:18:00] redundant.
crystal: It’s true.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: It’s true.
tom: How you thinking about that branding-
crystal: And- …
tom: Megan? …
crystal: so yeah, she was on a podcast, and, um, she talked about her first year at Peloton and her marketing strategy going forward. One of the things that I just felt like was interesting and funny about this is that she posted this on LinkedIn, and she was like, “I just don’t know that anybody can stand to listen to me.
crystal: Like- … listening to my own voice” Like, she did the thing- Yeah … where she was like, “Oh, my God, my own voice.” Is that what I
tom: sound
crystal: like? Yeah.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: And I just thought that was funny because- Yeah … everybody who does a podcast for the first time says that. The
tom: first time you throw on the headphones and you hear yourself-
crystal: You’re like, “What?”
tom: You’re like, “What?”
crystal: That’s what it sounds like outside of my head?
tom: And then after about 10 episodes-
crystal: Well, for some of us, it takes longer.
tom: Yeah. You’re just like, “Yeah,
crystal: that’s what I sound like.”
tom: I didn’t have that problem in podcasting. No. But I did in radio.
crystal: Well, it’s understandable.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: You got over it by the
tom: time- It’s very, but it, it is very jarring to hear-[00:19:00]
tom: what your own voice sounds like to other people. It is. ‘Cause the, the acoustics in your head-
crystal: They, they change it slightly … it changes it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Um, so she, when she was talking though, she talked about her, She talked about this kind of a little bit during South by Southwest when she was there.
tom: Mm-hmm.
crystal: And then she expanded on it here. But, uh, yes, she is the fourth person to hold the CMO title since 2020. Peloton.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: I mean, genuinely, it has been a really tough road for marketing.
tom: It’s like being the secretary on Murphy Brown. It’s true.
crystal: It’s true. All right. I hope we can add that to the list.
crystal: I hope it’s on the list.
tom: Yeah, I’m sure at some point we’ll run out of things.
crystal: After the 18 seasons of whatever the hell you have me watching right now.
tom: Night Court. You were excited about that at the start.
crystal: Okay, you didn’t tell me we were gonna be all completist and watch whatever the hell this is that we’re watching right now.
tom: The Night Court
crystal: reboot. Reboot. Yeah, I didn’t know. Yeah. I didn’t know. Surprise. And, and I [00:20:00] don’t, I don’t hate it per se, but like, I just feel like you’re real quiet about these things, like how many seasons there are. What is the thing you have us watching that’s, like, on Sundays?
tom: We watch Hawaii Five-0.
crystal: Yeah, and how many- The
tom: original …
crystal: how many… I thought this was gonna be a jaunt, you know? No.
tom: You like marathons.
crystal: Well, I guess I’ll have to.
tom: It’s an ultra-marathon. ‘Cause there’s 12 seasons of that bad boy.
crystal: Yeah, like you just snuck that in. And like you accidentally let it slip the other night, ’cause I was like, “Wait, what?”
crystal: ‘Cause you were like, “I don’t know if they ever changed the opening credits for this show,” because it’s in the s- we’re in the ’60s right now.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: And he just lets it slip that this goes until the 1980-something, and I was like, “What now? What?”
tom: It is crazy to think- … that this show runs from ’68 to 1980.
crystal: That is insane.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Yeah, duh-duh. Oh my
tom: gosh. It’s weird to think that in 1980 there was a show still on the air that was, like, airing at the same time as, like, The Andy [00:21:00] Griffith Show. It’s
crystal: crazy.
tom: Or Bewitched.
crystal: Yes.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Okay. Well anyway.
tom: Anyway, back to this.
crystal: Back to this. Back to this. So marketing, it’s been a tough go.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Uh, this is a really great podcast, and we have a whole article about it if you don’t do podcasts- Yeah … which I don’t know why you’re here. But I
tom: don’t know why…
crystal: Yeah, because- You, you shouldn’t be hearing that then.
tom: Well, no, you’re on- you only do this podcast. This podcast. And of course the occasional episode of Reel Spoilers.
crystal: Yes, of course. Yeah. Of course. So anyway, we’ve got all the details for you, so you might wanna, you wanna check that out and, uh, listen to all the details about Megan.
tom: If you were wondering, you’re not crazy. On August 17th and 18th, there were new- no new live classes at PSNY.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: So- Yeah … fear not.
crystal: It’s not in your head.
tom: It was not a glitch.
crystal: Nope.
tom: It just didn’t happen.
crystal: Nope.
tom: Do we know why?
crystal: We don’t know why, which I’m just saying goes back to my earlier thing about something coming, because we know they’re dropping new equipment- Yeah … this [00:22:00] fall. They’ve
tom: talked about it. Maybe they were installing things.
crystal: I mean, that plus now this slow rollout, and then you’ve got these, this, uh, this new circuit…
crystal: I’m telling you, I’m just feeling it.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: I’m feeling it.
tom: Now to pivot away from conspiracies-
crystal: Oh, okay. Well, I guess if
tom: you’re- It is late August in New York, right? That’s true. People always talk about how New York is a ghost town in August, ’cause everybody’s-
crystal: Yeah … off out vacationing … and apparently the entire world visits in September.
tom: Based on hotel pricing.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Holy crap.
tom: But but so it could also be that. It could. It could be a mixture of the two.
crystal: It’s true.
tom: Maybe- It’s true … whatever they’re doing, they scheduled for that timeframe because they knew.
crystal: Maybe they did.
tom: Yeah. Coming up after this, we’ve got instructors in the news.
tom: There are updates on the Adrian Williams situation. This is a podcast, I’m making air quotes. Yeah. You can’t tell if you’re watching on YouTube. I, I
crystal: saw them, though.
tom: I have my hands down low, so you couldn’t tell there either.
crystal: They’re underneath your computer.
tom: But hopefully the tone of my voice implied air quotes.
crystal: I [00:23:00] feel like it did.
tom: That’s the goal.
crystal: Yeah. Yeah. That’s what we do now.
tom: Yeah, that’s what we do now. We’re also gonna talk about which instructor is doing their last live class until September.
crystal: Eek.
tom: And who’s tackling a major fitness challenge, and you know it’s major if you’re a Peloton instructor and it’s still major.
tom: So join us on the other side of this, won’t you?
tom: so last week we talked about the Adrian Williams situation.
crystal: Mm-hmm.
tom: And I guess I should say, in the interest of full disclosure, it was mostly you talking ’cause I was a scared little kitten.
tom: Uh, and so, uh, somehow we managed to make it through that without getting screamed at, probably because I didn’t talk.
crystal: I would like to think it’s because I spoke from the heart. And- And,
tom: and [00:24:00] because of that-
crystal: And the people who were mad at me just didn’t bother …
tom: the combinat- oh, please. People mad on the internet-
crystal: I know …
tom: they always bother. So we did have some very nice messages.
crystal: Oh, so many nice messages from people. From all
tom: sides of-
crystal: Yes
tom: the spectrum.
crystal: Yes. Um- Um, and, and just, it, it means a lot when you- Yeah … put yourself out there like that, so, so vulnerably.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: And, uh, people respond so positively. Yeah. So,
tom: so- They recognized that we were trying to thread a needle and be representative of both sides’ concerns.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: And so, uh, in light of that- I’m sure-
crystal: Oh, yeah …
tom: because we drove that, I’m sure. We, uh-
crystal: We actually can take zero credit for it because- No … uh, we had already recorded when the news broke.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: So we can take zero credit.
tom: Yes. But Peloton has responded to the controversy.
crystal: They have. A couple of things happened almost simultaneously.
crystal: Mm-hmm. Peloton invited Jewish members that live [00:25:00] in the… like, certain ZIP codes. I don’t know if it’s officially the tri-state area. Right. That’s why I’m saying certain ZIP codes. Yeah. But, like, close to the studio, let’s just say-
tom: Yeah …
crystal: to come in and have a discussion. It is going to take place, I believe, on August 26th.
crystal: And, um, that is, is… They’ve invited people. You had to sign up, like, in a registration form, provide some basic details about yourself, and then you would be let… You would be sent a message that you either were able to attend or not able to attend. Mm-hmm. Right around the same time that occurred, because they’re calling it, like, a open discussion.
crystal: That’s what they’re saying. Right. Like, “We wanna hear from you.”
tom: Right.
crystal: And it was within, within an hour of that occurring Adrian Williams, one, took down the post. The
original
crystal: post. The original post- Yeah … about the restaurant, that I believe is pronounced Ayat, but I actually don’t know.
tom: Right.
crystal: Because we all know how terrible I am at pronouncing things.
tom: Yeah, same.
crystal: And, uh, he posted a-
tom: Uh, if, if I… Do I need to remind anybody of Jodichi? [00:26:00] Of the Jodichi incident?
crystal: I got a couple of people mentioning that, so- and I only know because they capitalized Chi for me. Sure. C-H-I. Yes. So I wouldn’t miss it.
crystal: You’re welcome.
tom: Yes.
crystal: Oh. So but in seriousness- Yes … uh, Adrian- Put on our
tom: serious
crystal: face now. Okay … Adrian posted a post that, talking about why he’s been quiet that he’s been reflecting. Uh, he said that he appreciated people who’ve reached out to him with the spirit of love and education, that he’s listening closely and learning, and that he promises to keep growing and stand firmly against hatred.
crystal: And to me, that says against antisemitism.
tom: Mm-hmm.
crystal: That’s hatred in all its forms. Right. So I still think that is also saying, “I support Palestine.” Like, I, I think it’s, I think- I- … it’s all of those things- Yeah … in the [00:27:00] same way that I do. Right. In the same way that I just don’t want anyone to be hurt.
crystal: Right. I, I don’t want, I don’t want Jewish people to be hurt, and I don’t want Palestinians- Right … to be hurt. I don’t want-
tom: Being against killing shouldn’t be a hot take.
crystal: Exactly. Yeah. Exactly. I, I will also say I read the comments and boy, d- I will never make that mistake- Yeah … again- … on such a-
tom: A-
crystal: divisive top- I didn’t, I thought this was, I didn’t think this was divisive. I thought this was like-
tom: Yeah … “
crystal: Let’s come together.” Yeah. That’s how I took this.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Not everybody took it that way.
tom: No. And I think that is also probably why he shut down.
crystal: Oh, I, I definitely-
tom: When it start- … think it is … is because ’cause that, that’s what your feed starts to look like, and you’re just like, “Nothing I do is going to put an end to this,” so you end up doing nothing.
crystal: I agree, and it’s really disheartening how much people went after him for everything. I mean- [00:28:00] When I say go after him, I mean when he took down the post and he posted this some people heard it as an apology and like a, an outreach to, like, bridge the gap.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: And some people felt like if you really meant it that way, you would’ve said what you did- It’s-
crystal: clearly …
tom: too little too late, and then other people are mad-
crystal: Well, hold on. Hold on … ’cause
tom: like, why’d you back down?
crystal: I wanna be really specific. Yeah. Some people specifically felt he should have named the Jewish community and apologized very clearly and used, used verbs in his sentences. Right. And because he didn’t, they were upset about that.
crystal: But yes then there’s a whole ‘nother side that were upset that he deleted the original post. Yeah. And they felt like you backed down from your beliefs and you were bullied into it, and people took high offense to him being called bullied. Yeah. Um, and then there was a whole other surprising piece to me about people kind of [00:29:00] questioning his
tom: masculinity-
crystal: Yeah
crystal: for not standing as, as I saw on numerous posts, 10 toes down. Yeah. Which, which feels like a call to masculinity- Yeah,
tom: for sure …
crystal: sometimes. Yeah. And I, I was just-
tom: Which I never understood that phrase ’cause you’d be like on your tippy-toes, right? That doesn’t sound like a very tough posture to be in.
tom: Um- You’d be getting knocked over real easy.
crystal: I guess you could.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: I just I thought, wow, no matter how he did this, he would’ve… and that’s what- Yeah … you’ve been saying since the beginning. Yeah. And why you told me to probably to keep my mouth shut.
tom: Well, I tell you.
crystal: No, not like ma-
tom: I know it make
crystal: it sound like…
crystal: Sorry, I didn’t mean it- Yeah … to sound like that. But you were just like, “I advise against this.” I
tom: was just like, “I don’t know. This is a rough one.”
crystal: Yeah.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: And it is.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: It is. But I am hopeful, I am hopeful that the conversation at Peloton is helpful to people. Mm-hmm. I know a lot of people are upset because it can only accommodate so many people and there are people that felt like it should be electronic and, and all of it should be taking place on Zoom, but that’s just so unrealistic.
crystal: Yeah. [00:30:00] I, I understand their thinking.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: You know, because they’re not nearby, they can’t take part. Sure. And I get that, but y- realistically, what are you gonna listen to everyone, 1,000 people for two minutes ea- like how would that even work? Yeah. Like, that’s- Like it’s, that’s
tom: not Yeah, pragmatically, like-
crystal: And like, when have we ever known people on the internet to shut up while someone else is talking?
crystal: Well- Or be thoughtful and mute yourself while someone el- Yeah … I mean, it’s, it- it’s not. Yeah. It’s not, and it’s not going to be. And this is such a divisive topic, don’t you think you should be in person? Right. Like, this is one I feel like we need to see each other’s faces. Yeah. We need to, we need to really understand the intention.
tom: And that link could easily get passed around to where i- if-
crystal: People that you don’t… That aren’t- Yeah … going to be helpful- Yeah … to the conversation.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Yeah. So it’s- So yeah. I understand where they’re coming from, but I also think- Agreed, yeah … I also understand where Peloton is coming from.
crystal: Logistically-
tom: Mm-hmm … like-
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Yeah. I don’t, I don’t see a way that you could open it up to that many people in a safe way.
tom: Mm-hmm.
crystal: [00:31:00] Because it’s a l- it’s a lot easier to have a, an environment that truly feels safe and inviting when it’s in person.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: And and that you can limit the amount of people, not to limit the number of voices, but to limit the number, the, the amount of cross-talking.
crystal: Yeah. The amount of not listening, the amount of hatefulness. Like, to limit it in that way-
tom: Yeah …
crystal: I think is, is good. And I will also say Peloton has had great success taking this approach in other instances. Right. Um, they’ve, there’s been other groups uh, there’s been other conversations where people have felt very strongly about topics and, uh, Peloton has invited them in and had discussions.
crystal: I mean, even the, the most recent that comes to mind is the UK group.
tom: Mm-hmm.
crystal: When they had their classes cut. Yeah. They were understandably upset, and obviously that’s not as charged as this. Right. I want to be- I was
tom: like, to be clear.
crystal: I, I do, I do know that. Yeah. I’m just saying, I’m just saying Peloton has had great success having a small- Right
crystal: group of representatives, even though it affects thousands of people- Right … [00:32:00] come in and have a conversation. Yeah. That is all that I was trying to say. Yes. That is the only way that this overlaps- Yeah … with the current subject. And I
tom: will also say, uh, sometimes the temperature lowers just by having people-
crystal: In the room
tom: not behind a keyboard.
crystal: Absolutely. Yeah. It’s true. It’s true. I mean, I have had really ugly interactions with people, and then, i- over the internet- Mm … and then in person that has been a very different situation. Yeah. And I, I would say on both sides. Yeah. On both sides. That’s not I’m just pointing at other people.
crystal: Like, I, I too am more… It’s, there’s something more humanizing when- Yeah … when a person’s in front of you. Yeah. It just is. For sure. So anyway, good luck to all involved. I sincerely hope this goes well and that people end up feeling more at peace about the situation.
tom: For sure.
tom: Moving along, Kirsten Ferguson’s last live class until September-
crystal: Mm-hmm. Yeah …
tom: has occurred, is upon us. I never know where we’re at.
crystal: I think it has occurred.
tom: Okay. I
crystal: think it occur- yeah, [00:33:00] it has occurred because she is on her vacation-
tom: Oh, okay …
crystal: that we will talk about-
tom: Yes
crystal: in the bonus.
tom: You’ve got-
crystal: So …
tom: you’ve got stories to tell.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: It’s fun. It’s fun.
tom: So hopefully you will join us in the bonus-
crystal: Yes …
tom: to hear that little tale.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: Bex Gentry is taking on the CCC 100K race. You heard that right, 100 followed by a K.
crystal: Yeah. Well, and you know, it’s, it’s not just the distance.
crystal: This one, i- okay, so- This
tom: is the elevation one,
crystal: right? It is. It goes up and down. The elevation, yeah. So there’s a whole series of running that is, like, the UTMB series. Mm-hmm. And it’s, this is, specifically takes place in France, and, uh, I’m, I would tell you the city, but we all know I’m gonna get it wrong.
tom: I believe it’s in the city of Giudici.
crystal: But the CCC is known as one of the most demanding courses in trail running. And she [00:34:00] said th- this says that she is going to go six… I’m sorry, 62 miles, 20,000 feet of elevation.
tom: Woof.
crystal: And it starts in France, but goes across Italy and Switzerland.
tom: That’s basically like doing a race on a ladder.
crystal: I mean, yeah.
crystal: And she talked about in, uh, she talked about recently that she’s using tracking poles, and she used to be embarrassed of using those. Yeah. And now she’s like, “No, I, I use them because they help me reach my goal.” Yeah. And, and that’s how it should be.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: It’s literally a tool.
tom: Especially when you’re talking that degree of elevation.
tom: Mm-hmm. Where were we at where they gave us those? Was it-
crystal: Where were… It was lame …
tom: was, was it Alaska?
crystal: No.
tom: No, it was Hawaii.
crystal: Yeah, it was Hawaii. It was Hawaii. And, and that, that was lame. W- The only thing that was good is that it was muddy.
tom: Yeah. And I will say I was like, “I’d never used one.” Shocking, I know. What?
tom: There was a device for an outdoor activity that you [00:35:00] hadn’t utilized, Tom? How, how out of character. But I w- I will say they were helpful.
crystal: They were. I thought, “This is the stupidest thing ever.” Yeah. Because we weren’t even going that far.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: But it was really muddy.
tom: I was like, “Do… Wait, did you just give me a cane?”
tom: Am I that old? Now I’m getting canes?
crystal: Well, everybody got
tom: one. I mean, I know I’ve been using the same deodorant for 40 years, but- … but a cane?
tom: My word
crystal: Even the kids got one
tom: Yeah
crystal: Like it
tom: was- Which I think was just to make-
crystal: Make us feel
tom: better? … make us feel better.
crystal: Oh, maybe it was.
tom: They were like, “Here’s one for you, kids. Wink.”
tom: Like when they hand out the life jackets
crystal: Oh. Yeah
tom: Like you know. Oh yeah, no, no, it’s not just for the people who can’t swim. It’s, uh, it’s for everybody’s got one on.
crystal: Well, for safety they do.
crystal: Yes. Um, okay. So this race obviously is not a quick thing.
tom: No.
crystal: Okay? So it’s going to be it’s going to be [00:36:00] Part of the entire World Series of the UNTB that World Series finals, they actually run from August 24th through the 30th.
crystal: Now this particular class, or this particular course rather- Mm-hmm … uh, she will be doing all this weekend, is my understanding. So it’s like, this is like the start of that.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: And so when that happens, we will be watching. Yes. We will be tracking Bex through the whole thing, and we hope that you- With polls
crystal: and I hope that you will be joining us. And oh, man, I’m nervous for her because the, the, the goat one that she just did- Mm-hmm … that was like 50, she was like, “That was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” And I’m
tom: like- I believe that was a, that’s called a 100 bray Because it’s, it’s goats.
crystal: So anyway, good luck to Bex.
crystal: Good luck
tom: Marcel Maurer was hospitalized.
crystal: Yeah, he said that he had gotten an infection and, uh, called it a little infection. So…
tom: Is that a thing? Do they come in sizes?
crystal: I, I don’t know. I
tom: think you’re either infected or you’re not.
crystal: He’s like the opposite [00:37:00] of my, uh, my family member that was- Yeah, I know who,
tom: I know
crystal: of who you speak. Yeah. Uh, but, but yeah, so I mean, he’s, he seems very optimistic and, you know, he’s like in very positive spirits and I just hope that he’s right. It’s small- Yeah … and he gets over it really fast. I ha- I hate seeing him in the hospital.
tom: For sure.
crystal: So get well soon, Marcel.
tom: Uh, Bryant Park Yoga has res- has revealed the lineup for their grand finale.
crystal: They have, and there are going to be three Peloton instructors there. We are going to have Mariana Fernandez, Anna Greenberg, and Dennis Morton are all going to be part of the finale, which I think is really cool. And uh, I love seeing that.
tom: Absolutely.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: whoop. Sorry, how do you say it?
crystal: Whoop.
tom: There we go. Has added FDA cleared fertility [00:38:00] tracking.
crystal: They have. Um, they have now partnered with a company called Natural Cycles.
tom: Mm-hmm.
crystal: And they, Whoop users get one year of the app totally free, which I’ve seen, but I’m just like it’s kind of pointless for me, man.
crystal: I don’t need to really track-
tom: Yes …
crystal: in the same way.
tom: There’s, for a multitude of reasons.
crystal: Yes.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Uh, and that, uh, the Natural Cycles uses that data to provide a daily fertility status through its app. They enable the Whoop app to import skin temperature data into Natural Cycles, and that eliminates the need for manual daily tracking using a fingertip sensor or something similar- Mm-hmm
crystal: so that’s great, ’cause they have your temperature on your wrist all the time. Right. And they, uh, I think this is a really cool thing. It’s, it takes a pain point out of the situation. Yeah. You know? You’re gonna be, you already have the wearable, so just get your overnight skin temperature, boom, done.
crystal: And so it’s only available with the Whoop MG and Whoop 5.0 devices, so if you still have the 4, I’m sorry, it’s
tom: not for you. [00:39:00] Nothing you can do. You’ll just have to do what the rest of America does, which is rely on the flock cameras. They’re doing all of that for you-
crystal: Oh my God …
tom: and reporting it right back to the federal government.
crystal: Ah.
tom: Don’t be afraid.
crystal: Yeah, it’s fine.
tom: Yes. It’s
crystal: totally fine.
tom: Coming up after this, we’re gonna talk content. We got the TCO top five. We’ve got information about run clubs, and new running formats, and, uh, all sorts of stuff like that.
tom: So don’t go anywhere.
tom: It is time for the TCO Top Five. You have told us your favorite rides, and now here you go. Number one, your favorite low impact ride.
crystal: Yeah, Daisy Mack, uh, nominated this ride. It was taught by Bradley Rose. It was a 15-minute low impact ride from August 11th. And, uh, I l- I love this because as opposed to our unstackable, she said, “This is a class that’s meant to be stacked.”
crystal: That’s what she said. Uh, Bradley Rose’s low impact ride-
tom: We call [00:40:00] those stackables …
crystal: was a disco edition. You’ll be using your Staying Alive Bee Gees dance moves alongside Bradley, and yes, he dances along. Turn on your disco lights and spin those pedals and shake your groove thing. Thank you, Daisy, that made me laugh.
tom: Uh, number two, your favorite hike.
crystal: Okay, so this was taught by, uh, Mariana Fernandez, and, uh, it was a 45-minute hike on August 16th. Now, you might be thinking, “Wow, I’ve never taken a hike with Mariana.” Well, that is because y- she doesn’t ever teach them.
tom: Well, there you go. That would explain it.
crystal: She had to sub for Marcel, and apparently, she was called in 12 hours before class.
tom: Well, I guess that would make sense given the story we just had- Right … about Marcel.
crystal: Totally.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: And Mariana shows up for people. Yeah. You know, so if, if somebody couldn’t… And sh- she’s really good to people. Like, I, I just don’t think she ever gets enough, like, love for being- Yeah … like, the one that is there for everyone, and I just think she’s amazing.
crystal: Anyway, uh, so we had a couple [00:41:00] of people nominate this because it was such a fun time. Uh, Larry Lewis said, “Mariana’s hike from 8/16, she got called in to sub 12 hours before the class, still managed to deliver an incredible class plan and playlist. A definite winner. You would never know she hadn’t taught a hike in over two years.”
tom: Whoa. “
crystal: Her two extra classes over the weekend made it a mucho Mariana weekend that the mariachis definitely appreciated. Dare I say we need more Mariana hikes.” I mean, I am all for that. I just think we should have more Mariana classes in general. There you go. Just, just be a rule.
tom: Uh, number three, your favorite artist series ride.
tom: It’s the Backstreet Boys.
crystal: It is. It was a ride with Alli Love. It was a 30-minute Backstreet Boys, and we had a couple of people nominate this as well. Deborah, uh, Anzalone said, “Alli’s 30-minute Backstreet Boys ride was an absolute blast. I found myself singing loudly to all the hits and loving every minute of it.
crystal: It was exactly what I needed after a wonderfully rewarding, yet emotionally [00:42:00] heavy week volunteering my time and energy at the Hidden Helper Summit at Disney World.” That Deborah, she just- Yeah … she just gets around, does all the things.
crystal: This mission is so near and dear to my heart, supporting our military and veteran caregivers and their families while helping them discover meaningful ways to practice wellness, build-
crystal: Resilience, and manage stress. Ali Love’s class helped me connect with my happy place, let go for a little while, and refill my own cup. Sometimes we caregivers need that reminder too. After all, we can’t pour from an empty cup. And she knows well. She is a caregiver herself, and a wonderful one at that.
tom: Uh, number four, your favorite Artist Series ride, N*Sync- Yes
tom: not to be outdone.
crystal: No.
tom: The battle continues. It
crystal: does.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Yeah. Cody Rigsby taught this. It was a 30-minute N*Sync ride, and, uh, Lisa Adams Wade said, “Cody’s energy and funny sense of humor, he never disappoints.”
tom: I feel like [00:43:00] he picked N*Sync because he doesn’t like Britney Spears.
crystal: I don’t know. ‘
tom: Cause it, right, doesn’t he famously not like her?
crystal: He, he does.
tom: Okay. And then- I
crystal: think …
tom: so this is- Wait,
crystal: I know it’s Taylor Swift. He f- I think- Oh, maybe it- I don’t know where Britney actually falls. Oh,
tom: okay.
crystal: Maybe he likes Britney
tom: and- Oh, maybe he does. Okay.
crystal: Yeah. I could be wrong. But I know he hates Taylor Swift.
tom: Okay.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: Then nevermind.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: I could be totally wrong.
crystal: I really don’t know.
tom: Not shocking. Number five, the class so difficult you dare not stack it Your favorite run
crystal: And I got to admit, it’s a repeat, but it’s a repeat worth doing because it’s an unstackable. It’s the Prodigy run taught by John Hosking. This was an outdoor run.
tom: Mm-hmm.
crystal: And Dark Peloton nominated this.
crystal: She said, “The Prodigy run with John Hosking was my absolute favorite. Hitting that PR felt electric, pure magic. Whether it was the breakthrough or those pounding beats pushing me forward, I rode that high long after the finish. Unforgettable.” The whole Prodigy series was amazing.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: So just, [00:44:00] like, if you haven’t taken any of those classes, you need to.
crystal: Susie Chan’s class was amazing, too. They’re just, they’re all good. Take all of them.
tom: Okay. Andy Spear’s hosting a run club over at the PSNY.
crystal: Yeah. It’s been a… It’s, I don’t know that Andy has ever done a run club, so that’s just fun- Yeah … all by itself. It will take place on August 25th at 5:45 PM.
tom: Speaking of run clubs, Outdoor Run Club has added a long run format.
crystal: It has, yeah. So these are classes that are taught every Saturday-ish.
tom: Mm-hmm.
crystal: Usually they’re every Saturday, but sometimes during the cold season they’re not. Right. You know. And this week we have a, for the first time ever, to my knowledge, a 75-minute outdoor run as part of the Outdoor Run Club.
crystal: Alex K. taught this one. And it- that is, as we feel, very good news- … for the long distance runners. As- especially as people are gearing up for their fall races. That’s awesome.
tom: Absolutely, yeah. Uh, [00:45:00] High Lit+ is wrapping up.
crystal: It is. And we had a nomination for the entire program for that
tom: That felt… I was like, “I think that’s an unstackable.
tom: You can’t do a whole program.” You,
crystal: you can’t. You cannot. But- Not
tom: all at once …
crystal: but we also wanted to highlight this amazing story because- Yeah … uh, Gail Benzara Rudy nominated the class, and, uh, I realize it doesn’t fit into our nominations. But, but Tom, you had a great idea to talk about how it’s- Ooh
crystal: wrapping up this week. HYLET Plus is wrapping up. We’re in the seventh week, so it’s the deload week. It’s done- Yeah … as of, I think, to, like, after we’re recording this, it’s gonna be done.
tom: I’m just excited that I had a great idea.
crystal: You have great ideas all the time. Stop it. Um, so Gail says she’s so happy that she did the full HYLET program with Rebecca.
crystal: She did all the s- the weeks on the schedule, even though it meant getting up at 5:15 every weekday so she could be ready for her baby granddaughter duty before 8:00 AM. She says, “I never thought I’d be lifting [00:46:00] up to 25 pounds.” That was, her previous heavies were 50- 15 pounds, so that is quite-
tom: That’s a marked improvement.
crystal: That’s- Well, get this. Get this. She’s 69 years old.
tom: Wow.
crystal: So Gail, you’re a fucking rock star. Yeah, that’s- Keep it up. Sorry for the, uh, the cussing- The
tom: potty mouth …
crystal: in front of your-
tom: She was probably gonna play this segment for her granddaughter.
crystal: Ah.
tom: And now she can’t.
crystal: Hang on. Gail, you’re a freaking rock star.
crystal: I’m very proud of you, and I’m so glad you shared this, and I’m so glad we got to highlight it. And
tom: we gave you both versions, so you can pick, pick your poison. It’s like This American Life. “If you’d like an un-beefed version of this program…”
crystal: Do they really do that?
tom: They do every, whenever there’s cussing.
tom: They’re like, “There’s cussing in this week’s episode of This American Life,” and I’m always like, “Ooh.” I figure any time they cuss on This American Life-
crystal: It’s gonna be good …
tom: it also means that people can’t be like, “You’re better than that.” Mm-hmm. I’m like, “We are not better than This American Life.” [00:47:00]
crystal: We are not.
tom: I’ll just, we’ll just say that right now. They are far superior, so… we have updates on both Robin and TuneDay’s split programs.
crystal: Yeah, so both of the programs launched this week, and Robin’s split plus run ended up having several different breakouts for the different kinds of runs. So we’ve got the s- we’ve got a sprint run, we’ve got a threshold, and we’ve got a hills, and then the same thing happened on- Are those
tom: hills visible?
crystal: It’s unde- undetermined- Okay … until next time. But thank you to those who listen every week, and- … there was somebody that, that had a-
tom: Somebody that sh- like- They had- … Tom calls them hidden hills.
crystal: Yes, it was great. TuneDay’s split plus ride also had a a breakout of each kind of ride, so there were, there were different ones, including a hills.
crystal: I also thought it was interesting that both of these were kind of marked towards marathon and HYROX training. Yeah. Like, they’re specifically kind of put into [00:48:00] those categories. And so I, I find that very interesting. Yeah. And I’m curious what people’s thoughts are on them. Yeah. So far, people have been taking them.
crystal: I’m hearing good things. Yeah. I’m hearing good things.
tom: I guess it’s that time of the year.
crystal: It is.
tom: You know?
crystal: It is. Marathons and- I
tom: mean, I know marathons happen all year, but it
crystal: does- They… Well, there’s fall and spring. Right. And then there’s the off-season. Yeah. So they have the ones that happen right at the beginning of spring- Yeah
crystal: and then you have the fall marathons, and then you have the off-season. And it tends to be people do one or the other, or… Unless you’re the people that are like, “I’m doing one in all 50 states,” or something like that. Sure. And then you’re just doing them all. You’re just constantly training- It’s nonstop
crystal: for a marathon.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: I guess, like, once you get there, you might as- You might
crystal: as well stay …
tom: you might as well stay there.
crystal: I disagree.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Um, it’s too much work.
tom: It’s just…
crystal: I can’t even imagine training for a marathon with all I have going on right now.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: Like-
tom: But, like, once you r- uh, got to that level, isn’t it easier to stay at that l- I’m, I’m- I mean, yes,
crystal: but-
crystal: I’m
tom: legit asking. I’m
crystal: not trying to be- Yeah … a jerk. Yes, but no. Like, here’s [00:49:00] the thing. Again, this always comes down to how slow I am. I think for the average person who runs a four-hour marathon- Right … or even a five-hour marathon, that is probably true, because they don’t have to spend their entire weekend every weekend dri- That’s fair
crystal: you know, actually running. But for me, being so slow- Yeah … that’s an entire Saturday, and I just don’t have a day to give up to that every da- every weekend, because this- You got this … and work, and like- Yeah … I mean, and work is really intense right now, so- Yeah … that was actually why I was like, “There’s no way I could do that right now.”
crystal: No. Just none. No. None. So anyway.
tom: Boy Band Week is coming to a close, or as I have written here ever so cleverly- … Boy Band Week says bye, bye, bye.
crystal: Oh, nice.
tom: Thank you.
crystal: That’s nice. Well, it ended up going from 11 boy band classes to 17.
tom: Oh.
crystal: Uh, the final classes of the week were a live boy band countdown. There was a run taught by John Hosking and a ride taught by [00:50:00] Cody Rigsby.
crystal: And they kinda did the countdown of all of the different- Yeah … boy bands, including Joe DiGangi.
tom: Joe DiGangi.
crystal: Yeah.
tom: Everyone’s favorite. And, uh, I was thinking it makes sense they stop at 17, ’cause once you hit 18,
crystal: they’re- No longer a boy …
tom: they’re man bands.
crystal: It doesn’t seem to matter based on they’re still out there doing it, but that’s okay.
tom: Nostalgia, man.
crystal: I know. I know.
tom: That’s where the money’s at.
crystal: I know.
tom: You should just skip over the part where you’re popular and go straight to nostalgia.
crystal: I think you have to have one to have
tom: the
crystal: other.
tom: That’s my marketing advice.
crystal: Good for
tom: you. I’m basically Megan Embrace. Except I’ll be on this podcast.
tom: Ooh, dang. Shots fired, Megan. Uh, Vanessa Mai? I
crystal: think it’s May. May? Well, I, y- I mean- It’s- … again, we know me, so I,
tom: I- I mean, first off, it’s a relatively present-day music artist, which already puts us- We’re, we’re not gonna know … at a disadvantage, and then she’s, like, [00:51:00] German or something.
crystal: Well, she’s at least in London.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: So.
tom: Because I think they talked about her being, like, a sh- one of those schlager-
crystal: Well, yeah. … things. Okay. So, so she’s, she’s at the PSL Studios. Uh, there’s going to be… Well, I don’t know if she’s there. Hang on. Let me.
tom: I think she is.
crystal: Is she actually there
tom: there? I think she’s actually gonna be in studio.
crystal: Okay. Shoo. There’s gonna be a special event that starts on September 9th, and then there’s a whole German schlager artist series week, and they, they added new, new schlager types.
tom: Oh.
crystal: Okay? So we’ve got party schlager. There’s gonna be ride, run, and arms. We’ve got the Wolfgang party, and then we’ve got the hit parade schlager.
tom: What about Goldschläger?
crystal: Not mentioned. Not mentioned. So, but I guess maybe after your ride you could have some schlager, Goldschläger- Yeah … to continue the party after you’ve done your party on the bike or the run, the tread.
tom: I’ve never had it. I’ve [00:52:00] heard it’s gross.
crystal: Yeah. I had it once. It was nothing to write home about.
tom: Yeah.
crystal: But I honestly don’t really remember that night, so.
tom: Yeah, that’s-
crystal: It was one of those nights where you mix the alcohol.
tom: That’s normally how Gl- Goldschläger works. Yeah. You don’t normally, like, we- You
crystal: don’t start with Goldschläger. We’re
tom: just drinking Goldschläger tonight.
crystal: No.
tom: It’s
crystal: like, somebody’s like, “I’m gonna get some Goldschläger.
crystal: Who wants to go with me?”
tom: Yeah.
crystal: And once you’ve had a few of whatever- Yeah … you’re just like, “I’ll try it.” That was also the night I tried was it, what’s the scotch that tastes like dirt? It tastes like peat. I don’t even understand. Like-
tom: All scotch? No.
crystal: I don’t know. I don’t know that it’s all scotch. I had, like, whatever…
crystal: It was, like, a fancy one. It wasn’t the house scotch.
tom: Right.
crystal: But it also wasn’t the MacAllans or whatever that’s like- It
tom: wasn’t the stuff that they had to keep locked up.
crystal: No, it definitely was- That
tom: you’d have to go get a manager to pour your drink.
crystal: It was not that. It was one of the, it was one of them, but it wa- it was, like, the cheap one of those.
crystal: Like- Gotcha … so, uh, yeah. I was not impressed. It was like, literally it tastes like dirt. I don’t [00:53:00] understand. Dirt is in my mouth. Why would anybody ever do this on purpose?
tom: I already have a dirty mouth.
crystal: Oh, you do.
tom: I don’t
crystal: need- You
tom: do … I don’t need help.
crystal: Yeah. I was so baffled. Yeah. That I remember.
crystal: The Goldschläger left zero impression, but that stayed with me not in a good way.
tom: Okay.
crystal: So for whatever that’s worth. I’m no connoisseur- … I’ll tell you that.
tom: and finally, birthdays. We have one birthday this week as August draws to a close.
crystal: We went through it so fast.
tom: I know. There were so many. So, so many. But uh, this birthday belongs to Mariana Fernandez.
crystal: I love Mariana so much.
tom: On August 26th.
crystal: Happy birthday, Mariana. So
tom: happy birthday.
crystal: I hope it’s amazing.
tom: Or Feliz cumpleanos Ooh Look at me Nice Look at that, a little bit of my Spanish class- Okay … coming back
crystal: You weren’t sure.
crystal: You were unconfident I was
tom: like-
crystal: You were like me with-
tom: Yeah …
crystal: resilience [00:54:00]
tom: Right Which was edited out, so they’ll never know. But yeah, so I might have said happy birthday. I don’t know. I might have said happy lawn ornament. Who’s to say? Oh. Who’s to say? So that brings this episode to a close.
