Transcript:
Crystal: Welcome to the Clip Out Podcast, episode 464. This is Crystal O’Keefe.
Tom: And this is Tom O’Keefe, still reeling.
Crystal: From what?
Tom: From the Instagram post that you sent me.
Speaker 5: Okay.
Tom: Where you- I- … were like, you- it’s a, it’s some sort of AI robot pet.
Crystal: Yeah. The- That you could- … Wall Street Journal featured it, and- And,
Tom: and you were like-[00:01:00]
“We can get rid of Twix now.” No,
Crystal: I did not. I never said that. She was like, “We
Tom: don’t need to keep our dog anymore.”
Crystal: That’s not at all what I said. ”
Tom: We can, we can get rid of this- … this, this m- mutt that’s running around our house- In
Crystal: fact, all I did- … and replace it with a
Tom: robot dog.” I think it
Crystal: says a lot more about you that I sent it to you and you made up this rhetoric in your head, because all- Mm-hmm
I, I sent it without comment. Yeah. So I think it says a lot about you. You were
Tom: like, “Finally.” That’s…
Crystal: I never said that. I never said that. AI is
Tom: even putting your pets out of work.
Crystal: I mean, okay, let’s settle down. You know what my first real thought was, though? “Oh, dear, people are gonna abuse this fake dog.”
Like, because it comes out, like, all timid and, like, it, it, it responds to people’s- Yeah … like, it can feel emotions, like, that are around it and, like, assess the situation. So my first thought was, “Oh my God, people are gonna be like, ‘Oh, it’s something sweet and vulnerable. We need to destroy it.'” There are people like that.
Yes.
Tom: Yeah, [00:02:00] yes, I know. Yeah. And- Apparently about 35% of the country. Exactly. So, uh, so it’s from the people that make Roomba. This is not an ad, by the way. Yeah. We will not have a, a free robot dog. We
Crystal: will not.
Tom: Or promo code.
Crystal: Or a paid robot dog, for that matter.
Tom: I… It’s from the people that make Roomba.
Mm-hmm. And so I was like, does that mean the dog can actually eat the treats, too? You drop a piece of food and the dog just comes by and is like… And then every once in a while you gotta- Well- … you gotta empty it … they
Crystal: didn’t show it in the video, but I suppose anything’s possible.
Tom: So here’s what’s, what is gonna happen with your robot dog.
Crystal: Okay.
Tom: It’s gonna be like you’re gonna have it for, like, a year. And then they’re gonna be like, “Oh, you want it to cuddle with you?” That’s $4.99 a month.
Crystal: Totally. Like- No, I believe that. I believe… Everything’s like that. Yeah. Yeah. I d- I, I don’t doubt it at all.
Tom: They’re gonna be like, “Oh, you’ve had this dog for seven years.
Well, guess what?” ”
Crystal: That’s
Tom: how [00:03:00] long dogs last, so if you wanna keep it alive- It’s $75 a month.
Speaker 5: No, stop it.
Tom: But we can bundle it with your cat, your robot cat subscription- Oh, goodness … and you can get them both for $100 a month. For an extra 115, they won’t fight. You
Crystal: can tell you’re in marketing. Yeah. This is all coming way too easy to you.
Tom: Oh, goodness. The future is now, and it sucks.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: So, uh, what, pray tell, do you have in store for people this week?
Crystal: I don’t even know. I, I have robots on the brain. Uh, let me look at the list. Okay. Why don’t you have our
Tom: dog on your brain instead of its replacement?
Speaker 5: Don’t make me cry.
Crystal: Oh my God. I’m emotional today.
Could go either way. Okay. So we’re gonna talk about this, uh, fun, cool, uh, TuneDay apparel collection- Mm-hmm … and all the things that went with it, all of the timing that happened. Peloton had a big event and other stuff happened. We’ll talk about it. Okay. We’re also [00:04:00] gonna do a recap of the earnings call.
We’re gonna keep it kind of quick though. Okay. Uh, we’ll just hit the highlights. We also are going to talk about, as part of the earnings call- Mm-hmm … is Peloton looking to acquire companies? If so, who? Whom? And,
Tom: and would they be w- wanting to acquire- A podcast? … a podcast?
Crystal: There’s, uh, also the current chief operating officer is going to be speaking at a Fortune COO Summit, not to mention Peloton partnered up with LISC in Chicago.
We’re gonna talk about all of that. We have instructor news. There is a brand-new challenge for Robin. This is special. This is fun, and I can’t wait to talk about this. Okay. Mariana Fernandez responded to the music substitution issue- Mm … from last week. Uh, we also have an update and a recap of the Jess Sims Teacher Appreciation Tour.
Uh, we’re gonna talk about Jeffrey McEachern volunteering as [00:05:00] a marathon tail walker, and, uh, not to mention Cliff Dwinger’s new music collaboration. We also have a few things going on outside of Peloton. Well, one really, Google updating their Fitbit app. We’re gonna talk about that. Artist series, we’re gonna talk about the latest.
Not to mention we have some content that we wanna highlight and make sure that it’s on your radar.
Tom: Awesome. Well, before we get to all that, shameless plugs, don’t forget we’re available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart, TuneIn. Wherever you find a podcast, you can find us. And while you are there, be sure and follow us so you never miss an episode.
Maybe leave us a review. I’ll wait while you do that. Okay. That was a quick review … it was a long wait, but you cut it all out in editing. Oh, right. I waited for like 15 minutes. Yeah. And then you c- you trimmed it all. I did. Yeah. Mm-hmm. And, uh, you can also, uh, if you would like to support the show, the easiest thing you can do, other than what you’re doing right now, is, uh, you could share it in your feed.
Just be like, “Hey, this is something I like, and if you know me, you probably like Peloton too. Here’s the thing.” Yeah. You can also, if that’s not [00:06:00] enough, you can give us your money, $5 a month. But we give you things too. What do you get for your $5, you ask? Well, I will tell you, you get early episodes, you get ad-free episodes, and every week you get a bonus companion episode called The Clipped Out, all the things we did not have time to get to in the regular episode-
and some health-adjacent news stories that we find interesting or funny.
Crystal: Funny enough, guys, we actually had to cut from the bonus this m- this week. That’s new.
Tom: So we now have a new tier for $10 a month. You get the Clipped Out.
Speaker 5: No.
Tom: Over on the bonus this week, we will be talking about, brace yourself people, there is a protein shortage in America.
Crystal: It’s disturbing.
Tom: And so it’s, uh, in case, case things haven’t gotten expensive enough for you. Oh look, there’s more. Wait, there’s more. Uh, also miracle gum.
Speaker 5: What? [00:07:00]
Tom: Someone has invented gum that does something amazing to your senses. All right. And we will talk about that, and we will also discuss which instructor changed their IG handle and why, and of course, all sorts of other instructor news, podcast appearance roundup, things like that.
So that’s all waiting for you over on the bonus. Aren’t you lucky? You can also check us out on Facebook. That don’t cost nothing. Except for the computer or smartphone you use to do it, but that’s a you problem. But if you’re listening to this, you’ve already got those things.
Speaker 5: True.
Tom: So it is essentially free.
Facebook.com/theclipout. While you’re there, like the page, join the group. Don’t forget we have a newsletter every week with, uh, all the links and whatnot, uh, so you don’t have to go hunting for them. You can sign up for that at theclipout.com. And then finally, you can watch all of these over on YouTube to see what [00:08:00] wacky graphic tee I’m wearing this week.
Crystal: What you got on under there?
Tom: Under here I have Snoopy.
Crystal: Oh, okay.
Tom: Dressed up like Batman.
Crystal: Really?
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: That’s great. Yeah. Okay. For the
Tom: YouTubers, Snoopy dressed up like Batman. Oh my God, he’s so cute. And it says, ’cause he would, when he would be his little writer, he would always write his little stories- Yes, yes
on his typewriter. They always started with, “It’s a dark and stormy night.”
Speaker 5: Yes.
Tom: So it’s a dark night. Got it. See?
Speaker 5: Yeah. Nice
Tom: So there you go. All right. Every week, a different one. I know. Unless I do laundry. It’s pretty much every day. Unless I do laundry. Unless you do laundry. I was like- And I, then I put it away.
I put away my own laundry though. You do. So. I’m very proud of you. This is what a feminist looks like. So anyway, there’s all that. Let’s dig in, shall we?
Speaker 5: We shall.
Tom: Peloton held a special event launching the [00:09:00] Tunde apparel collection.
Crystal: They have done so much to push this apparel collection. They have. I don’t know that I even mentioned this to you, but they had a special club Peloton member only pre-sale before the launch, the day before. And you got I don’t remember what the percentage was off, but- Yeah
y- well, your club Peloton percentage is what you got off.
Oh,
Tom: yeah, that makes sense. And,
Crystal: um, and so- But you got early access … you got early access. Right. And then in addition to that, they also had a fashion show, and several of the instructors were there, many of the instructors, all wearing different things that Tunde- Tunde
Tom: themed apparel
Crystal: all Tunde fashions. And so, then it was, there’s a mixture in this of some kinda casual wear. There’s some men’s casual wear. There’s some men’s sportswear. There’s some women’s sportswear, so you’ve got all the fitness stuff- Mm-hmm … and the casual stuff. But in addition to that, there’s also swimwear, and the drop just happened to [00:10:00] coincide, happened to coincide- Yeah
with the Sports Illustrated issue-
Ah …
dropping that she’s featured in.
Gotcha.
That’s really cool. Yeah. But it’s also like, I think they expect this to sell very well.
Yeah.
And, uh, I have to say that, uh, we did a little video about this last week. Mm. And that Sam Storch Malloy, she was like, “Get it while you can.”
She’s the new apparel director. She’s very excited about this launch, but also she’s so engaged with the community. Yeah. It’s been so long since we’ve had somebody from the apparel team engaged in the community. Yeah. And I am here for it. I love it. Love it. So lots of bright colors in this. I decided not to get anything because, well, Tunde just looks so amazing in all of these things.
And I’m not gonna look like that. So, uh, I didn’t get anything. But it’s really pretty. I love the colors. It’s really nice.
Tom: That’s why I wear all my nerd shirts. Yeah. I feel like when you see the other people wearing the nerd shirts, I stack up okay.
Speaker 5: You do. Yes, that is [00:11:00] true. I-
Tom: I gotta- There- I gotta, I gotta manage expectations.
Listen,
Crystal: there, there has been more than one occasion, like a Comic-Con, you have been wearing the same T-shirt as another nerd wandering around. How
Tom: embarrassing.
Crystal: And you do well.
Tom: Again. It’s about juxtaposition. I, I’m- Right? I’m here for it. Yeah. I’m here for it. I think it’s- When you go to a Peloton event-
you don’t walk away saying these things.
Crystal: But then you wear your special little Air Jordans, and you get your little-
Tom: My untuck it. Your untuck
Crystal: it. Yeah. Yeah. You’re very spiffy in a different way.
Tom: So Peloton had their earnings call.
Crystal: They did.
Tom: And, uh, are they earning?
Crystal: Well, you know what? They are. Uh, this is this particular earnings call was actually pretty exciting because, not that the stock market showed it, but, um- It never does
th- they did go, it, it did go up, like, 6% that day. I mean, it, it’s already gone back down. But the point is that, uh, this is the first time they have had net profit, positive net [00:12:00] profit, for an entire year. First time ever. Yeah. Not first time since. Right. Like, first time ever. Okay. That’s a big deal.
Yeah. And, uh, they also have cash on hand. Now, they’ve been working on their cash situation for a long time. Right. But, um, one of the things that came from this call is that now that they have their cashflow in a great position, they are accumulating cash, and they have this debt to pay down. They haven’t been able to pay down the debt because there has been an early payment,
Tom: Penalty
penalty, exactly. Right.
Crystal: So they, obviously, they don’t wanna be penalized for that.
Tom: Why? What’s the upside?
Crystal: So they’re, they’re looking at all options right now of what they could do. So do they take that money and put it back into investing in R&D? Do they take it and put it into something else? Do they add more people?
Like, there’s so many… And they could, of course, pay down debt once the penalty, it, clause is over.
Tom: What I think they should do- Oh, boy … [00:13:00] scratch-offs.
Crystal: Oh, yeah.
Tom: Put it all into scratch-offs.
Speaker 5: This is why you’re not you’re not the guy in charge. This is why.
Tom: I’m just saying. You buy that many scratch-offs, you gotta win.
If you buy that many, that’s just math. Don’t question math.
Crystal: Okay.
Tom: Have Wilpers do, scratch them all off.
Crystal: Why would it be Wilpers specifically? ‘Cause it’d be Matt math. Well, there’s another option that they have, and it goes into the next line item, so. Atlantic
Tom: City, put it all on black.
Crystal: Well, they’re also talking…
Somebody asked during the question and answer session, “Well, could you buy back your shares?” And they were like, “We’re looking at all options, including, not limited to-” They would always be open to acquisitions- Mm-hmm … if it was the right company at the right price at the right time.
Tom: Or the right podcast.
Just [00:14:00] throwing it out there.
Crystal: Yeah, I understand.
Tom: You’d be acquired by the marketing team.
Crystal: I mean, it could happen.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: It’s not gonna happen. And
Tom: next week, the Clip Out could be hosted by Tunde and Jon Hoskin.
Speaker 5: Wouldn’t that be a magnetic couple? But they would
Tom: have to get married.
Speaker 5: They have to. That just- Just,
Tom: yeah, I mean, it’s the Clip Out
that’s the only rule. You gotta be married. We’re not… It’s, we’re all about family values. You can’t host a podcast if you’re not married to each other. Gross. Not true. That’s
Crystal: disgusting. So explain to me about your movie podcast.
Tom: I’m married to both of them.
Crystal: Anyway, so people got real excited about that, uh, about the acquisitions. Yeah And of course, Tonal came up over and over again. For sure, ‘
Tom: cause that’s the dream. It
Crystal: is the dream. Yeah. It is the dream. Like, marrying those two companies would be just, ah- Yes … chef’s kiss. Like, I… And there were a couple people, I don’t know if they’re just trying to be different or what, but they’re like, “No, don’t [00:15:00] merge them.”
And I’m like, “What is wrong with you?” But their thoughts were that Tonal is so different and special, and it’s also at a very different growth period- Yeah … than Peloton, that they feel like Tonal still has amazing customer service. It still has amazing, like-
Tom: They like that boutique- They do … you can still talk to the instructors, and they’ll talk back.
Yeah. And yeah. Like,
Crystal: they’re in a much, you know, small… They’re back at, like this is more like Peloton 2018. Right. You know, where Tonal is right now. They’re in a really nice sweet spot. But I would also say, yeah, but Tonal’s kind of always fighting financial crisis disease themselves. Right. And so this could be a win for both and that would be, like, a win-win, ’cause then you would be guaranteed that Tonal lasts.
However, it would scare me that they would get rid of all the Tonal instructors. And, you know-
Yeah,
that’s- … I’ve become attached to the Tonal instructors. They, they really… Like, they’re very different than Peloton instructors.
Yeah.
But, like, they’ve built it. They deserve to be there. And we’ve already had enough [00:16:00] Tonal instructors leave.
Tom: Yeah, I was gonna say, ’cause you can make the argument that this group has not built it. I, I know. N- with no shade directed at them. I know. ‘Cause they’re, they’re, they’re good too- They’re great instructors … but it’s, yeah.
Crystal: It’s, yeah, I know. There’s, there’s some baggage there. It’s, it’s- Yeah … a little awkward.
But- I would
Tom: struggle because my whole brand is I don’t do Peloton. I know. Then what would you do? So if they bought Tonal, I’d just have to go out and get, like, a Bowflex or something. ThighMaster. ThighMaster. ThighMaster. 100% ThighMaster. It’s all I would do.
Crystal: Well, it’s gonna suck for arm day. But- Is that,
Tom: is that Tunde’s sister, Arm Day?
Crystal: I was so confused by what you were saying there- … because there’s, Tunde does arms ’cause she has such amazing arms. Oh, that’s true. And so- She should change her name to Arm Day. So, uh, yeah, but there were other companies that people mentioned, and there were some really odd ones. Like, like, there was one that was, like, the, the, the swim goggles that have, like, speakers that you can hear, Zygo or something, and I [00:17:00] was like it isn’t gonna happen.”
You should call it Zygot ’cause you’re swimming like all. It’s not gonna happen. It was so not gonna happen. Also, um, okay, so we talked about that, but then as far as part of what happened on the earnings call, one of the other things they talked about was, like, there is new equipment that’s going to be announced in the fall.
Yeah. Two things that were mentioned were fascinating to me. Mm-hmm. One is yes, they are going to be keeping some equipment. The equipment you will see released is in the modalities that already exist, and that they are going to make it more accessible, i.e., they’re going to make something cheaper.
Now, we’ve heard this before about the tread. Right. So I’m assuming that’s where they’re going. But will we also see it with the bike? Will we also see it with the row? Don’t know, but if we do, that could be a real big key to getting the row finally over in the UK, Canada… Well, okay, they have it, the row.
But, like, in, in Europe, being able to expand the row there would be, that would be a really big thing because that’s what people ask about all the [00:18:00] time. I don’t think we’re gonna see that- Right … until they lower the price. Then the other thing that they said was that they’re going to be releasing equipment that is not in an existing modality.
Hmm. So of course, people who want Tonal, they said, “Oh, it’s gonna be a Tonal.” It’s not gonna be a Tonal. Listen, here’s the thing. Years ago, they were in the process of making a Tonal. It was completely scrapped because it was way too expensive- Yeah … to put out into the market, and I don’t think that they would do that at this time, even if they thought, “Oh, let’s bring it back.
Let’s try to make it cheaper.” The reason I don’t think they would do that is they have kind of made their whole thing about not needing equipment for all of their programming. So I, that’s kind of what they’ve doubled down on- Yeah … is having, having things like, oh, maybe you have a bench, and you have your free weights.
But, like, they want to be more of that traditional thing. That’s been the focus. They would have to change very substantially to make equipment that directly competes with Tonal. So there’s [00:19:00] that. Then the other thing that he said was, “We consider all modalities, all kinds of resistance training, strength training.”
Well, everyone that heard that heard that as Pilates. Now, people have been saying reformer, reformer, reformer.
Yeah.
And maybe that’s what we’re gonna get. I am a little concerned about the safety issues With the Reformer. Yeah. Because it’s a lot worse than, let’s say, a treadmill, and we all know how that went.
Yeah.
So I have my concerns about that, but I am not in charge of the company, so- Yet … that is not my Yet. You’re funny. So not my call to make. But that is pretty much all of the highlights. Like, there is a lot to look forward to. We have several stories that came out from the earnings calls. There are lots of things you could deep dive into.
You know, the CMO got a, uh, Megan Embrace got a big shout-out because all of her social views for that amazing commercials- Yeah … like 60 million views. Yeah. Like, that’s not nothing. That’s
Tom: not nothing.
Crystal: And they went viral, and they were, like, [00:20:00] in… They are mentioned everywhere due to this commercial- Yeah
which is very much where you wanna be for this- For sure … kind of company. Yeah. So I thought it was all good news, all good news.
Tom: So, uh, Peloton’s chief operating officer is going to speak at the Fortune Coo Summit.
Crystal: C-O-O.
Tom: Coo.
Crystal: Chief operating officer. Right.
Tom: C-O-O. Coo. It’s a summit entirely for pigeons.
Crystal: It is, yep.
That’s what it is. Well- Or
Tom: for guerilla revolutionaries.
Crystal: So this is gonna take place June 1st and 2nd in Scottsdale, Arizona. Believe it or not you can, I think, buy tickets to this thing. It’s gonna be at the Four Seasons Resort in Scottsdale Arizona. I have no idea why you would wanna register for this, but if you did, uh, you can expect high-level networking, engaging hands-on master classes and workshops, and expert-driven thought leadership.
Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with [00:21:00] top operational leaders across Fortune 1000 companies and gain exclusive access to Fortune
Tom: editors. Look, I’m happy that this guy’s getting to do this. Yeah. I’m not trying to yuck his yum.
Crystal: Okay.
Tom: But that sounds beyond boring.
Crystal: I mean, it… Listen, we are not the demo.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: So there’s that.
Tom: It’s also funny, networking opportunities. I can’t wait to m- meet other COOs, for them to be like it was nice meeting you, Tom. You are woefully unqualified.” ”
Crystal: Why are you here?” Yes. ”
Tom: Hopefully you got a free ticket. But if you could get us another plate of these pot stickers.” “Oh, I thought you worked here.”
That’s how that conversation would go. You think? Yes.
Crystal: Okay. Well, you could be right. I don’t know. But there, uh, there are some, some interesting titles of things. I just wanna name a couple. Sure. I’m just gonna randomly give some.
Tom: Randomize me.
Crystal: Okay. Soul and [00:22:00] Sound Morning Yoga.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: New York, New World: How AI Is Shaping, Reshaping Your Org Chart.
Main stage sessions. We’ve got, uh, that’s just all it says. Yeah. Uh, Defending the Enterprise: How COOs Manage Risk When Threats Multiply.
Tom: Ooh, multiplying threats. I
Crystal: know. Human in the Loop: When to Trust the Machine.
Tom: What
Crystal: does that mean? I think it’s an AI thing. I don’t know. I didn’t read it. I’m literally- It starts off
Tom: by human and then by the end, they- they’re like, “Trust the machine.”
I’m
Crystal: literally just, like, picking some to… Succession Spotlight: The Real Power Igniting the AI Data Center Build. What? I don’t know. See, this is
Tom: why we can’t go. No. Yeah. We don’t even understand what these things mean. Will… With all this AI talk, will they have a robot dog?
Crystal: I don’t see him featured here.
Tom: Okay. All right. But- Well, I’m for sure not going …
Crystal: you never know. You never know. So anyway, It’s a robot
Tom: service dog. I’m allowed to bring it in.
Crystal: I would be curious to hear what, [00:23:00] what good old Charles Carroll has to say, though. Yeah. I’m curious. Curious.
Tom: He sounds like a author from the 1860s. He totally does.
Crystal: He spells it K-I-R-R-O-L, though. Okay. So I get it, you’re thinking more like, like a Charles Dickens novel. Right. But no. No, it’s K-I-R-R-O-L.
Tom: In my head, he, uh, sleeps in one of those really long-
Crystal: Nightgown sleep things … nightgowns with a
Tom: little cap on. That’s wh- That’s how I, that’s how I picture you, Charles Carroll.
So deal with that. Finally, Peloton has partnered with LISC in Chicago. Oh. L-I-S-C.
Crystal: I, yeah, I was like, I just called it L-I-S-C. But, uh, this is part of the Community in Motion program, and it, they add… In this particular situation, what they did is they added 75 Peloton bikes to community spaces. Also, Nico was there.
Oh. Um, this is an [00:24:00] underserved neighborhood, and so local incentive, I’m sorry, Local Initiative Support Corporation, that’s what LISC stands for- Okay … they launched Community in Motion, and that is how all of this took place. This was the first activation. I know that’s your favorite terminology. I love
Tom: to be activated.
Crystal: It took place at the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation’s Healthy Lifestyle Hub, and that is where Peloton and LISC Chicago marked the occasion with a ribbon cutting, equipment tutorials, cooking demos, and a wellness session led by Nico Cirani. Isn’t that cool? Yeah. They are also going to add additional locations as the initiative continues to roll out, so we will be seeing more of this.
Tom: More activations? More activations. Ooh.
Crystal: More community involvement. I love it.
Tom: Feel like Wonder Twin powers.
Crystal: Unite. ‘
Tom: Cause I’m gonna be activated. Wonder Twin powers activate. Speaking of activations- Mm-hmm … which is just a fancy way to say commercials, we have [00:25:00] activations coming your way And when we are done activating- Mm-hmm
we will talk instructors in the news. We’ve got a new Robin challenge. We’ve got Mariana talking about music substitution. We’ve got, uh… Or we get to talk about tails- … and tail walkers.
Crystal: Yep.
Tom: A good time will be had by all- … so stick around.
Tom: Okay. You have been activated. We have, we have now been deactivated. Is that how that works? No. Oh, okay. Robin Arzon-
Crystal: Yeah …
Tom: has a yellow challenge. Is this a Coldplay artist series?
Crystal: No. Uh, actually, I think this is really fun. Many years ago, it was noted by one single solitary member that when Robin wore yellow- Yeah
it meant the class was going to be really hard.
Tom: So I know that that is now true. [00:26:00] Was that true at the time?
Crystal: Listen, sometimes- Or did
Tom: she lean into it?
Crystal: I think she leaned into it. Yeah. I don’t know, because it was so long ago that I wasn’t even taking classes. Right. Like, this, this happened so long ago.
Yeah.
Um, and so this is… I love the history of these things. It then evolved into Robin’s Wolfpack, which is her community. Mm-hmm. They have been saying this for years as a group- Yeah … because of this one person. And this
Tom: is where you get the hip hop artist Yellow Wolf.
Crystal: And, uh, and… No. Oh. And, uh, because of that, Robin really celebrates it.
Whether it was always that way or it became that way, it is now, and I, I’m so here for it. Yeah. And you know it’s gonna be really hard if she wears triple yellow, and that’s what this challenge is. It’s a triple yellow. She’s… It’s called All In Robin’s Yellow Challenges Challenge. The idea is to complete eight high-intensity rides and/or runs with Robin from May 18th through June 14th.
And, uh- You better be ready. Like, I mean, [00:27:00] you need to lay down ’cause this is gonna be- You, you’re not gonna be able to just phone it in. Yeah. I mean, listen, you can take whatever class you want- Sure … however you want. You can
Tom: make adjustments, that’s okay.
Crystal: Absolutely. But also, if you really want a challenge, it’s also fun to push yourself.
It’s not
Tom: the spirit of the challenge. It is not. Yeah. It
Crystal: is not, so maybe wait till you’re feeling it- Right … before you do it. But I am really curious to see if she will actually indeed be wearing yellow in every single one of these classes. I
Tom: mean, if she doesn’t, then it’s not really the Yellow Challenge, is it?
Well, that’s what I
Crystal: wanna know. Yeah. I mean, I have questions. Are these classes that already exist?
Tom: Yeah. See, I
Crystal: have so many questions.
Tom: Look, if she’s not wearing yellow, they’re just gonna get a new class action lawsuit. So she better wear yellow. They’re gonna put… They’d put a filter on it or something.
Get some sort of AI Snapchat filter. She’d be wearing yellow, and she’d have cat whiskers. And
Crystal: here’s another question I have for the Robin community. Does the shade of [00:28:00] yellow matter? Hmm. Like, if it’s a pale yellow, is that different than a neon yellow? And is that different than, like, an orangey yellow?
Right. Or are all yellows created equal from a, a intensity standpoint?
Tom: Right.
Crystal: So I have lots of questions. Well,
Tom: that seems fair.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: So last week we talked about music substitution. Mm-hmm. Classes that have songs just randomly swapped out.
Speaker 5: Yes.
Tom: And, uh, Mariana Fernandez responded over on the Reddit.
Crystal: Well, and she didn’t respond on Reddit.
Oh, sorry. She responded in a private conversation-
Tom: That was then- … to one
Crystal: person, who then screenshotted it and shared it on Reddit.
Tom: Oh.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Gotcha.
Crystal: Lord Almighty. Yeah. This is, this is why instructors don’t know who they can trust and who they can’t- Yeah, for sure … because people do stuff like this. Now, this person didn’t do it in any negative sense.
It’s just you never know what can come back and bite a person in the ass. Right. You know?
Yeah.
So, uh, yeah they had been talking on Reddit about all the music substitutions, and then this person DM’d Mariana [00:29:00] and, uh, was just like, “You know, I was looking into this class and, like, these, this, these, this music changed.”
So Mariana was like “I’m gonna report back.” And then she said, “Thank you, Beyond.” This is what Mariana said. Mm-hmm. “Thank you, Beyond. The music team is looking into it.” And then the next day she replied, “It’s fixed. Can we report back to Reddit so they know it’s not all the classes, especially with member classes?”
So she, so she gave Tasset permission. She did give Tasset permission. Yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely she did. I am not trying to put, uh, this person, Gingersnap123, on blast. Yeah. It’s just some people don’t think before they do. For sure, yeah. Yeah, when it’s a private DM, you gotta- Yeah, no, that certainly- … be thoughts-
Tom: has occurred.
Crystal: It ha- There’s been, been some things. But anyway so no, she gave permission. I’m… My apologies, Gingersnap. And, I thought that this was really interesting because it implies a few things, right? First of all, in Peloton’s response last week, they mentioned floor classes and strength classes-
not the bike classes and other things that this [00:30:00] was happening on. And this particular class, I don’t know whether it was a yoga class that Mariana was teaching or if it was a running class, because she does both in addition to meditation.
Right.
But what I do know is neither of those is what Peloton called out.
Right. So I can’t help but wonder if there is something happening with the type of AI that Peloton is using or the automated operations that Peloton is using, that they don’t realize it’s affecting more classes than it’s affecting. Right. Like, somehow this is making things change and they don’t even realize it until- Yeah
someone brings it up. It- It’s got
Tom: creep. It’s got mission creep.
Crystal: It just makes me wonder. Yeah. I, I don’t know what’s actually going on, but it, I don’t think that it’s the intention to change all these songs out because if it was, then why was this class fixed?
Speaker 5: Fixed, yeah.
Crystal: Like, it’s just the terminology.
It’s just, it, it implies so much here that this is not something that Peloton did on purpose. Now, if it’s not something Peloton did on purpose, [00:31:00] what the hell is happening over there? I know. And who has control of it? Yeah. So, so that’s gonna start people getting down a whole nother road. I’m not saying that’s happening either.
It’s just a theory. Yeah. I don’t know what’s happening, but it’s it’s curious. That’s all I have.
Tom: Uh, Jess Sims is on a teacher appreciation tour. Oh, she was. She was on a pre- teacher appreciation tour.
Crystal: It is over now. She did four cities.
Tom: Now the teachers can go F themselves. It was really- Appreciation over.
Crystal: It was very cool. It was four different cities and she did, uh, 16 different classroom projects and raised, uh, $8,000 for schools. The idea was that, a few things, one, to give back to teachers nationwide. Uh, as you might remember, she comes from education. Yeah. Used to be a principal which still blows my mind.
Yeah. By the time that the first two cities had wrapped, they had already funded 16 classroom projects through Donors Choose. And that number is actually real materials, real classrooms, and real students who [00:32:00] would’ve otherwise gone without having supplies, so that’s pretty darn cool.
Yeah.
Then, uh, at each city where they had the tour, they brought teachers in and they got to have a special event just celebrating them.
Uh, and you got to be nominated by either… You could nominate yourself- Uh-huh … or have somebody else nominate you, uh, to be included. Not everybody that was nominated got to go. Uh, it sounds like they had about 100 attendees per city. Okay. That’s gonna vary a little bit- Sure … depending on where they had it.
And, uh, then the other thing that occurred was that one, uh, one teacher also was brought into New York and had a special special out- like- New York weekend. And then they gave them a travel and lodging package that was valued at $1,000, uh, for that person. So I thought that was really cool to be able to do.
Yeah, that’s nice. Yeah. It’s neat.
Tom: Uh, Jeffrey McEachern is volunteering as a marathon tail walker.
Crystal: [00:33:00] Yeah. He recently complet- I think this was at the London Marathon. And I just thought this was so cool because w- he, what it means is that you’re at the tail end of the marathon- Mm-hmm … and you walk, like you’ve…
He was volunteering to be with the walkers to keep them at pace- Yeah … keep them motivated throughout the marathon. Uh, and it’s typically the people who have decided from the get-go, “We’re gonna walk the whole thing.”
Right.
Um, and so that, that’s the thought process, and he had such a great time.
And there’s a lot of people that walking or going slowly, uh, using whatever means they may have, sometimes that might involve a wheelchair or whatever- Mm-hmm … they have different ways of doing that. But that may be the only way they can get across the finish line. Right. So that group of people is really special- Yeah
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: They, for whatever reason, are at the end, and whether it’s they can’t, they don’t want to, they have a reason but they still wanna do them.
Right.
And this is a way to do that in a special way. And, um, [00:34:00] being with like-minded people at the end, like it’s, it’s really special. Yeah. I remember when we had, I am totally blanking on her name, but she go, her Instagram name is The Fat Chef, That’s her Instagram name. Right.
But she, like i- is very prideful of the fact that she’s completed like something, a ridiculous amount of marathons, and she doesn’t, quote-unquote, in her words, “look the way a marathoner would”- Mm-hmm … typically. And, uh, she ends up at the end of these marathons a lot. She’s not a volunteer, though.
And it’s always like a party, you know? Yeah. And that’s the way Jeffrey explained it, too, in his stories, was it was just like joyful. Right. It was just a joyful experience, and he said it was life-changing to be with these people who were pushing themselves to get across it.
It’s probably
Tom: a unique experience for him because with his fitness level, he’s never anywhere close to that. End of the equation.
Crystal: Right
Tom: So- Well, and
Crystal: if, and if it’s… I don’t know how the London Marathon works as far as waves and such- Mm-hmm … but most of them are based on how [00:35:00] fast you run. Which
Tom: makes sense.
It totally does. Yeah, like-
Crystal: But because of that, the people who run fastest are going to be at the beginning, and so never interact with the people- Right … that are walking- Yeah … for that reason. Like- Yeah … you don’t even have the opportunity to see it unless you’re just waiting at the finish line for somebody.
Right. So it, I think it’s, it’s also unique in that you’re choosing- Yeah … to change where you start and choosing to interact with a different group of people, and I think that’s really cool.
Tom: So safe to say he’s not a Nike ambassador.
Crystal: Not for this one, no. Doesn’t mean he won’t be in the future.
Tom: I don’t know, if he’s doing more than tolerating walkers.
I-
Crystal: I see what you’re doing there. Yeah, they tried to make up for that with their next marathon. Yeah. But I don’t, I don’t know. It’s… People got over it pretty quick. Yeah. There’s so much to be rageful about.
Tom: Plus, if you got, already got, own all that Nike stuff. Yeah. That’s an expensive protest.
Speaker 5: True. That’s true.
Tom: It’s not like just shooting it a six-pack of Bud Light. Yeah. And it’s like [00:36:00] $7. Finally, Cliff Dwinger is working on a new music collaboration.
Crystal: So, uh, Cliff Dwinger posted on his Instagram that Blind & Black is back. Now, uh, this refers to Bernarda Music, uh, that’s the Instagram name. Mm-hmm. And they were teamed up during the “Voice of Germany.”
Okay. And, uh, they were making music together. They are going to be making more music together m- at outside of “The Voice.” Gotcha. So that’s pretty cool and exciting and can’t wait to see what they come up with.
Tom: so if you have a Fitbit Changes are a-coming. Uh, they are updating the Fitbit app to now be Google Health.
Crystal: They are, and they just came out with a brand-new Fitbit that directly competes with Whoop. Hmm. It doesn’t have a screen, and you wear it 24/7.
Tom: Interesting.
Crystal: Yeah. They are hardcore going after Whoop.
Yeah. [00:37:00] Um, I’m really curious to see how this plays out because Google has a lot of buying power, a lot of spending power, and, um, Whoop is trying to go into their IPO. I feel like now is a really bad time. Yeah. I feel like they are… have a target on their back, and I am concerned for them. Yeah. I feel like now is not the time.
You need to hunker down and figure out a way to keep ahead of this. Because it’s one thing whenever somebody comes out with something that’s similar and it’s just like whatever, and I feel like Google has the power to make it more than just a device.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: However-
Tom: And there’s lots of people who already have Google and Android stuff- Mm-hmm
where if they haven’t already sele- selected Whoop, they’re like, “Well, this is already in my ecosystem.”
Crystal: I will also say I’ve used Fitbit, I’ve used Apple, I’ve used Garmin. The best sleeping data ever has been Whoop, by a landslide. Yeah. I realize that everybody has that same [00:38:00] experience. But I mean, it’s by a landslide.
And the sleep has so much to do with your recovery. It like, it’s a major factor in how it affects all the other data metrics.
Right.
I will also say, Whoop has a really rich environment with what it does with the data. Mm-hmm. It, it takes that data and tells you what you can do with it. Google and anybody else coming after them is gonna have a really long way to go to get to that.
Right.
But as far as how it interacts with Peloton, Google Health is still going to be able to integrate with Peloton, so people who are using Fitbit are… They’re not gonna see any kind of problems with that. You may have to update, you may have to reset your settings, things like that. Right. But you’re still gonna be able to use your Peloton, uh, ecosystem in the same way that you were before.
Tom: Gotcha.
Tom: I guess it’s not officially an artist series, but we spent so much money on the sweeper, I hate to let it go to waste, and it’s music related. So we have [00:39:00] two surprise classes spotlighting Mel C, or if you prefer,
Crystal: Melk. It is Mel C and her new album called Sweat.
Uh, also, I think very important to mention, she was in both classes. Oh, look
at that.
Yeah. And, uh, there was a prediction made by our own lovely writer and helper bee, Elizabeth Schulberg- Yeah … that she had said… So, so the idea was or the, the puzzle came up- Mm-hmm … that DJ John Michael was like, “Ooh, I just did an amazing new remix, and I’m super excited about it.
You guys are just gonna die when you find out who it is.” So we were all guessing.
Yeah.
And one of the guesses was Elizabeth, and she predicted that it was gonna be Mel C because she knew Mel C had a new album dropping.
Ah. And,
uh, she was right. Her in the know. I know. I was like, “Really? How did you know that?”
She’s just very trendy- Yeah … like that. So yeah, and that’s really cool that Mel C was actually in the class. How fun.
Tom: What if it had been a Monkees- … [00:40:00] remix, and they were doing a special class with my first ever Peloton ride?
Crystal: That would be very cool, too.
Tom: I mean, it would be… We know that you can keep secrets about doing Peloton stuff.
We
Crystal: do. It would be very hard to keep. That, I don’t know that I could do. It was also really, uh… I think it’s just, it amuses me that her, her n- this was the Sporty Spice, that it just, it just amuses me that it all comes… Sporty Spice- Yeah … was the one who is at Peloton. But anyway, uh- And it’s called Sweat,
Tom: so.
Crystal: Yeah. That’s it. And the classes were with, uh, Eric Yeager and Hannah Frinkson. Uh, and Hannah Frinkson was very, like- She was very excited. Very excited, which is really sweet and endearing. Yeah. I love that.
Mumford & Sons is happening this week as well. Uh-huh. That’s gonna be another artist series. We talked about it at the beginning, the beginning of the month- Right … so I didn’t see a need to, like, get into the weeds with it. Mm-hmm.
But I did wanna just mention-
Tom: It’s out there … it’s out there. It’s out there. Yeah. Well, coming up after this, we’re gonna talk content. If you are [00:41:00] facing what marketers call the paralyzation of choice- Mm-hmm … we are going to help you cut through that- … by dictating which classes you should take.
Speaker 5: Okay.
Tom: We’re gonna do that next- All right … so stick around.
Tom: it is time for the TCO Top Five. You have told us your favorite classes, and here they are. The first one up for bid- It’s a 30-minute Mother’s Day walk run
Crystal: Yes, and Selena Samuela is the one who taught it.
Shonda Milroy nominated it, and she said that Selena’s 30 day- 30 minute m- Mother’s Day walk plus run on Sunday at 2:00 because it was her first treadmill class back after maternity leave, and I was live in the studio. That’s really cool. Uh, it was the best Mother’s Day ever to be live in the studio for her first treadmill class back, and I got to do a live walk with Jess King, which was so much fun, and I met Tunde and Mariana [00:42:00] while I was there.
Epic Mother’s Day. That’s really special.
Tom: Not to be outdone- Mm-hmm … here is number two, your favorite Mother’s Day ride.
Crystal: Yes, and this was taught by Christina Dierkohl, and it was a 45-minute Mother’s Day ride. Kim Daenick nominated this and said that she’s always great motivational, but it was a tough ride.
I don’t think I could ever stack this one with any other ride. It almost was the unstackable, but wait- Okay … just wait.
Tom: Well, number three, your favorite live DJ ride.
Crystal: Yes, this was Emma Lovewell’s live 30-minute live DJ ride with Taki Monsta, and Deborah Anzalone nominated this. She said that it was both inspirational and exhilarating that Taki shared her story, which was inspiring, and Emma is so knowledgeable.
The ride flew by.
Tom: Number four, your favorite long run.
Crystal: Love to see this. It was the 100- one of the 150 long- minute long run from [00:43:00] the Race Your Pace program. Now, this was the one that was taught by Susie, and it was accompanied by Jeffrey and Eric. Okay. So three instructors, 150 minutes. Kristen Lavin is the one who nominated it, and she said, “I put it in a stack for a half-marathon last week, and it was perfect.
It was Susie and two other instructors. I personally like that Susie is talking with the music. There was a lot of talking and chit-chatting in the middle, but it’s good when you’re a slower runner, and it’s really good to motivate me. I also liked her 60-minute long run. I forgot the date, but she’s in the outdoor series.”
Tom: And then finally, number five, a class so difficult you dare not stack it. We call it an unstackable. It’s an interval run.
Crystal: Taught by Bex Gentry, and Larry Lewis nominated this. His nomination was very serious. Yes. My unstackable class for the week is Bex’s 60-minute intervals run from 5/9/26. Might be the hardest class I’ve ever taken.
Intervals on [00:44:00] incline with jogging recoveries. I had to walk half of them. Me too, Larry. Uh, had me at my absolute limit. Be ready for a challenge when you take this class.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: So There you have it.
Tom: Rad Lopez has his first 60-minute strength class.
Crystal: Yeah, it’s coming up this week, so if you just can’t get enough of that strength class, classes, this is a good one to hit.
Tom: Australian guest instructor Tim Robards is back for more.
Crystal: Yeah, he’s going to have a full body workout, and that’s gonna be taking place with Jermaine, and then there’s going to be some running classes also that are prepared for, uh, the Australian races, and those will be taking place with Susie. Those are all coming up in the future.
Tom: HYROX Yoga is now available.
Crystal: It is. This is gonna be the very first time we have had HYROX Yoga.
And I believe it was Chelsea that is going to be teaching it. Um, but it’s gonna be like recovery- Mm-hmm … for your Hyrox. That makes sense. Yeah. Yeah.
Tom: The Hyrox is just- Everywhere … it’s [00:45:00] creeping into everything. It is. It is. It’s got tentacles. It does.
Yeah. Well, it’s got dollars. Well, that too. That’s
Speaker 5: why it has tentacles- Yeah … ’cause it’s got dollars.
Tom: Will we get an LA Fitness competition branded yoga?
Crystal: Who knows what’s gonna happen. Seems unlikely. I don’t think so. Yeah.
Tom: Katie Wong has announced her first 45-minute strength class.
Crystal: Yeah, I love that Peloton is really doubling down on these longer class formats, and we’re seeing it.
They’ve been talking about how they’re gonna add more strength, and they’ve been talking about how they’re gonna add more long classes. We’re seeing it. So got Rad’s first 60 minute, you’ve got Katie’s first 45 minute. Yeah. Here we go.
Tom: Uh, Leanne Hainsby Aldis has a new encore class. Yeah, it- Like jumbo shrimp
Crystal: but here’s the thing, that’s not the reason this is- … notable at all. The notable thing is she’s still on maternity leave.
Right.
And all of the encore classes that have been dropping have been from late ’25, uh, or earlier.
Mm-hmm.
This is the first one that’s dated [00:46:00] 5/13/26. Okay. So it’s… So the question is, is that just a mistake?
‘Cause hey, it happens. Sure. Or does it indicate that she’s back behind the scenes recording things at a very, like, a nice slow pace where- Right … she’s not back, but she’s able to do some things? We don’t know.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: But it was different, so we thought we’d mention it.
Tom: Interesting. And, uh- Yeah, ’cause it could’ve just been they meant to type 25, but when you’re already- when you’re in May, it’s real easy to be like tw- you’re just used to typing this year.
I know. So it could just be a typo. It could,
Crystal: it could be. Yeah. So we will see, but it’s weird to have an encore scheduled for the same date the release date is. Yeah. That’s, that… It’s all a big question mark. Sure. Yeah.
Tom: Uh, Mariana Fernandez has teased a new series for June.
Crystal: Yeah, she’s super excited about it.
She went live the other day, and she mentioned there’s a new series coming out. Uh, she said that it i- one of the topics it will be covering is a ment- is mental conditioning. So, um, I reached out to her, and I was like, “W-,” ’cause I thought I had just missed the announcement of what it was. Right. And [00:47:00] she’s like, “Nope, it’s just a teaser.
I haven’t officially announced it.” And I was like, “Is there anything you can share with me?” And she’s like, “It will be in a way to have an immediate mobility and release post-runs.” Hmm. I don’t know what that means, but I’m excited about it.
Tom: Uh, Hannah Corbin and Dennis Morton have teamed up for a country happy hour two-for-one.
Crystal: This is the first time that the happy hour has had a two-for-one. This is brand new. Oh, is it? It is the first time, and so that is definitely notable. And that it’s Dennis Morton, who’s not known for, like… He’s not- he’s known for a wide variety of music. Mm-hmm. But he’s not necessarily known as, like, a country- player.
Right. Do you know what I mean? Yeah. So I will be really curious to see what kind of music comes up in this one. Yeah. And how the vibe shifts or doesn’t shift. Yeah. It’s, it’s always interesting to see how the instructors interact together. So I’m curious to see this one.
Tom: And then finally, just, uh, lots of different new classes spotted on the platform.
Crystal: Yeah. Uh, they had some… It’s going [00:48:00] to be, uh, an EDM run. Mm-hmm. They’re going to have… They’re already starting to list their Pride classes, uh, so we know those are coming up. Interesting, the next Vibe and Flow class that is going, that Chelsea hosts, is going to include Maddie, and it’s gonna be a Broadway-themed one.
Okay.
That makes a lot of sense. For
sure.
And, uh, there’s, there’s a lot of thing coming up in June, so we don’t wanna get too far ahead of ourselves, being that it’s mid-May.
Tom: Sure.
Crystal: But, uh, June looks to be very exciting.
Tom: And we got two birthdays for you this week.
Coming up on May 16th, it’s Maddie Maggiacomo. And on May 20th, Ash Pryor. So happy birthday to both of them.
Crystal: Yes. Happy birthday, Maddie and Ash.
Tom: So, uh, that brings this episode to a close. Until next time, where can we find you?
Crystal: You can find me on Facebook at facebook.com/crystaldo’keefe. You can find me on Bluesky, Threads, Instagram, or the Peloton Leaderboard at ClipOut Crystal.
