Eggs on Ice, Feet on Fire
Overcoming Adversity with Grace and Joy
Being a Peloton intstructor, Mariana Fernandez is no stranger to the grit and determination required to complete a marathon. But this fall, while preparing for the New York City Marathon AND aiming to PR, she paused to face a new challenge: freezing her eggs. Determined to prioritize her own health and well-being, she took almost all of August off from running – typically a crucial time for marathon preparation – to undergo the fertility treatment. Navigating the physical and emotional demands of the egg-freezing process wasn’t easy, but in the end, Fernandez emerged stronger, more resilient, and more determined than ever. Her inspirational journey was recently featured in POPSUGAR, and it’s a story that’s sure to inspire anyone facing their own life-changing challenges.
Prioritizing health and well-being
Fernandez’s decision to undergo egg freezing was a deeply personal one, and something she felt was important to prioritize. As she told POPSUGAR, “This is something that I wanted to prioritize and do for myself. August was dedicated to getting that done, but it took me out for about three and a half weeks because my recovery was also pretty painful.” Despite the setback, Fernandez remained focused and committed to her goals. She relied on her meditation practice and the support of fellow Peloton instructors to stay positive and motivated throughout the recovery process.
Navigating challenges with grace
Few things test a person’s resilience like running a marathon, but the experience of undergoing egg freezing added a new layer of challenge for Fernandez. The process involved hormone shots, general anesthesia, and a lengthy recovery period that made it difficult to stick to her usual exercise routine. However, Fernandez rose to the challenge, adapting her training plan and focusing on using exercise as a tool to support her mental health. While it wasn’t always easy, she emerged from the experience stronger and more determined than ever.
After successfully completing the Chicago Marathon as a “fun run” just a month after undergoing egg freezing, Fernandez realized that she had been taking her training goals for granted. She came to embrace the idea that marathons could be both challenging and fun, and approached the NYC Marathon with a new sense of enthusiasm and joy. And all that hard work paid off: after seven marathons, Fernandez finally broke the coveted four-hour barrier and achieved a new personal best. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and an unshakeable commitment to self-care.
Lessons learned along the way
Through all the ups and downs of her marathon training and fertility journey, Fernandez learned some valuable lessons about being kinder to her body and listening to its needs. As she puts it, “The secret to her success? Giving her body grace, listening to it, and having faith that everything is temporary.” By prioritizing self-care and remaining committed to her goals, she achieved something truly remarkable – and she’s an inspiration to anyone dreaming of doing the same.
Mariana Fernandez has proven time and time again that she’s a force to be reckoned with. Whether she’s conquering a marathon or navigating the challenges of egg freezing, she approaches every challenge with grace, determination, and a sense of joy that’s truly infectious. It’s no wonder that her fans and fellow Peloton instructors alike look up to her as a source of inspiration and motivation. We can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next!
