Transcript:

Crystal: Welcome to the Clip Out Podcast, episode 477. This is Crystal O’Keefe.

tom: And this is Tom O’Keefe It’s been a whirlwind.

Crystal: It really has.

tom: Freshly back from a trip to Texas.

Crystal: Yes.

tom: For reasons known only to Patreon subscribers.

Crystal: That’s right. If you’re Patreon, you get to know all the things.

tom: Yes. So, uh, but uh, yeah, so it’s been…

tom: Just flew to Texas for 36 hours. Don’t mind us.

Crystal: Yeah.

tom: And now we are [00:01:00] back.

Crystal: We’re back.

tom: And, uh, we’re a little slap happy-

Crystal: Yes …

tom: because it’s just been a weird couple days.

Crystal: Trying to stay caffeinated.

tom: Yes.

Crystal: Today is going to be a very long day.

tom: I have an energy drink in me and a Coke Zero in front of me, and you got a big old thing of some sort of coffee.

Crystal: It’s iced coffee.

tom: Iced

Crystal: coffee. Sydney, Sydney picked it up on her way home from McDonald’s for

tom: me. Gotcha. And, uh- that explains why your coffee’s been arresting people. So-

tom: If, uh, if we sound a little weird and slap happy-

both: That’s why …

tom: that is why. So, I guess let’s just dig in, ’cause there is- There’s a lot

tom: so, so much this week.

Crystal: Yep.

tom: The- we’re not like your local news where every night they tell you what a busy news night it’s been and they’re totally full of shit. No. It’s super busy this week. So, uh, let’s hit the highlights. What do you got for people?

Crystal: Well, we’ve got a lot to cover that came out on the earnings call last week, so we’re gonna talk through the highlights of that call.

Crystal: Uh, and I’ll try to just keep it to just the high level things that people wanna [00:02:00] know. Okay. We’re not, we’re not gonna go through every single detail. And, uh, we are going to talk about a new discount program recipient- Mm-hmm … category that Peloton has added. Um, there’s also there’s going to be a new residency.

Crystal: We just had a residency out in Santa Monica, now there’s a new one coming up, so we’re gonna talk about that. We have, um, an update on the New York Road Runners changes they made to the New York City Marathon. Okay, and for all of you wondering, yes, we’re gonna do it. We’re gonna talk about Adrienne Williams.

tom: Oh, dear.

Crystal: I know. I’m scared to death to talk about this, because it’s such a divisive- It’s such a loaded

tom: topic … it’s- It feels like if you say one thing-

Crystal: So I’m asking right now- Yeah … for grace. Yeah. I’m just, I’m a- I’m not saying you’ll give it to me- … but I’m asking for it. Because we love all of our community, and we don’t want to leave anyone out.

Crystal: Yeah. And it’s a tough place to be. Uh, we are gonna talk about Ash Pryor finally becoming a Pilates instructor. This has been coming for so long. I’m so excited- Yeah … to [00:03:00] finally see this.

tom: It’s been percolating.

Crystal: It has. It has. She got her certification last year. We’ve been waiting for this, and, uh, here it is.

Crystal: We also have some other instructor news coming up, where instructors are gonna be, where they have been, celebrations galore, classes happening that are, uh, never gonna be seen on the platform, very special classes. We also have- A flurry of artist series happening this week. I, I know there’s only one on here, but that’s not actually true.

Crystal: There’s a whole lot, ’cause- There’s a whole bunch … a whole lot has happened. There are also new features that dropped this week we need to talk about. There’s brand new programming th- new class types you’ve never seen before, a return of a favorite that came out last year for the first time ever is happening this year.

Crystal: So just so, so much to cover.

tom: Okay. Well, before we get to all that, shameless plugs don’t forget we’re available on Apple Podcast, Spotify, iHeart. Tune in. While you’re there, be sure and follow us so you never miss an episode. Maybe leave us a review, super helpful. You can also check us out on Patreon, where you get [00:04:00] even more content.

tom: If you’re enjoying what you’re listening to right now, what if I told you there was more of it?

Crystal: More and Peloton, more Peloton.

tom: Yes. And yes, so we will be talk- I normally make little notes to myself of what to tease, but because we were traveling-

Crystal: Yeah,

tom: well there- … I didn’t do it, so let me… I’m just gonna scan it real quick.

tom: We’re gonna talk about… Oh, this looks like a good one. Oh, yeah. Okay, so we had an instructor-

Crystal: Oh, yeah …

tom: do a class that, uh, is not being well received.

Crystal: I don’t think I’ve ever seen… No, that’s not true. Only one other time have I seen this much hatred for an instructor teaching one class.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: It’s bad.

tom: It’s really bad.

Crystal: So who is it, and what is it about? We’ve got all the details.

tom: That will be all over in the Patreon about what-

Crystal: What happened …

tom: he or she has done-

Crystal: Mm-hmm …

tom: and, uh, why people are reacting the way they are.

Crystal: Mm-hmm.

tom: Uh, let’s see. We will also, we’ll have a podcast roundup of where all the Peloton [00:05:00] instructors are on other podcasts, and then um-

tom: Peloton spotted on a Netflix show.

Crystal: Oh.

tom: It’s been a while- It has been a hot minute … since we’ve… And, uh, and I don’t see anyone talking about it, but I think I saw it somewhere else very, very prominent. Oh, okay. It went by for a split second. You were with me.

Crystal: Okay. I think I

tom: might know- You were looking the wrong direction.

tom: I, I

Crystal: remember this. Okay.

tom: You, like, looked down-

Crystal: At the exact wrong moment … at

tom: the exact wrong time, and I was like, “I think-“

Crystal: Yeah. “…

tom: we’ll talk about that.”

Crystal: All right.

tom: And then we also like to have our little fun health stories. A little story about movement and why it’s good even when it’s not good enough. All right.

tom: So all that’s over on the Patreon. It’s $5 a month. You get all of that extra content, and you get early episodes, you get ad-free episodes, and you know that we like you a little extra.

Crystal: Absolutely.

tom: Uh, you can also, uh, find us on YouTube, youtube.com/theclipout. Watch us in, uh, now in Technicolor. And sign up for the newsletter at theclipout.com where you [00:06:00] will get a mostly weekly reminder of our existence.

tom: So there’s all that. Let’s dig in, shall we?

Crystal: We shall.

tom: the earnings call was last week, so we will hit some of the highlights. I think the highlightiest. They’re calling it highlight plus.

tom: Peloton logs its first ever profitable year.

Crystal: Yeah. This is a big deal. Yeah. I mean, it was a milestone for the company. They, they had profit in, in both areas, not just the, the net income one. Like, the… Not just the revenue one. Okay. It was all of the things. Right. So, so two, this is the first time, and the first quarter that it’s ever happened.

Crystal: Uh, also it was t- the second quarter in a row of general profitability as well, so that was another highlight. Um, I, I don’t like to get into the details of all the numbers, but basically they said, you know, the guide- [00:07:00] They came in above their guidance on every category. Yeah. They said they were going to have free cashflow.

Crystal: They did that. They said they were gonna have that, their big savings that they did, $100 million worth of savings. They exceeded that with the changes they made this year. Which I have mixed feelings about because that’s good for the company, but then, you know, people lost their jobs- Right … as a result of that.

Crystal: And then, um, they are still, like, since they have this free cashflow and it’s, it’s a very sizable amount the loan is, is coming due, but they can they have like a, an issue. You can’t pay that early, so it’s like now they’re deciding what to do with all that cash. That’s been going on since last, they’ve been talking about that since last quarter.

tom: Um- I think what they should do with all the cash-

Crystal: Yeah …

tom: pizza party. Pizza party in the break room, everybody.

Crystal: I think they probably do that anyway. Um, and they also said-

tom: What if They also got, uh, cheesy garlic bread

Crystal: I mean, that is quite the splurge.

tom: Right.

Crystal: I don’t

tom: [00:08:00] know. Because they’re profitable, so- I don’t

Crystal: know that they can go that far

tom: instead of just a pizza party- Well, then- … there will also be cheesy garlic bread

Crystal: Well, then the profit’s gone. I mean, yeah.

tom: But the, but they f- they fixed it.

Crystal: Oh, okay.

tom: There’ll be profit forever now.

Crystal: God, I wish.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: Okay. But on that note, they said, hey, that the, the churn has been it increased. And there were some other numbers that were concerning because they’re saying like, yes, it’s up, but also the guidance is down.

Crystal: Like, it’s gonna, the, the revenue is going to be down, we’re not gonna have as many sales. Okay. But it’s always slow this next quarter, so I don’t- Right … know why that’s shocking, but you know Wall Street.

tom: Right.

Crystal: They have big reactions to everything.

tom: They do.

Crystal: Uh, unless it’s- They’re

tom: all up in their feelings.

Crystal: Yeah. I know. Women get accused of being emotional. But you know- … the men are the ones over… Um, not that there’s no women stockbrokers, that sounds terrible. I don’t actually- But the guy that I picture that’s the stereotype in my head.

tom: Look, they say tech bros for a reason. You never hear them say tech broads.

Crystal: That’s true.

tom: I’m gonna coin that.

Crystal: Oh, okay. [00:09:00]

tom: Everybody, if you say it, you owe me a nickel.

Crystal: Okay.

tom: I’ve trademarked it.

Crystal: Wow.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: All right. Uh, next up we, uh, for, this is, I’m just gonna cover all the topics- Yes … for earnings.

tom: Pound through it.

Crystal: Okay. So the Scop opp- acquisition just occurred this year. Yeah. It was fascinating, they called out specifically that Pilates use year over year has increased 54%.

Crystal: Now, somebody said, “Well, that’s because they keep coming out with all the classes.” I beg to differ. The reason they came out with all the classes is because the classes they had been doing were doing so well.

Crystal: Right.

Crystal: That’s how it, that’s why they did more.

Crystal: Right.

Crystal: So the big question is, uh, you know, one of the other things they said, separate category but also not, uh, they said, “Hey, new products are coming this fall.”

Crystal: Like, they flat out said it. Like, it is going to be something new we’ve never done before.

Crystal: Okay? So people really think, like there’s a huge contingency that thinks it’s gonna be a reformer. They bought Scop, that is, and they have flat out said on earnings calls, like direct quote, [00:10:00] “Our R&D has increased due to that acquisition.”

Crystal: Okay? Okay. So you’ve got R&D around Scop. You’ve got new product categories coming. You’ve got… They asked about, somebody asked about Tonal and, uh, Peter Stern did this really long answer that basically, like- And they were like, “Are you gonna do something tonal-like?” And he, he was like, “No.” But he didn’t say no, he said everything but no.

Crystal: Right. He said, uh, “Well, we’re gonna have things with weights. There’s a lot going on with the strength category, but not like you would expect. And in the meantime, use those dumbbells.” And I was just like, “What the hell does that mean?”

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: Peter Stern, I have questions. You know?

tom: And he has an answer that he’s not sharing.

Crystal: Right. I mean, that’s his job. Yeah. He’s not supposed to tell me. So that, the big questions, everybody’s wondering about this.

tom: My equipment prediction ThighMaster.

Crystal: You think?

tom: The return of the

Crystal: ThighMaster. Man.

tom: A ThighMaster acquisition.

Crystal: Well-

tom: And an AI Suzanne [00:11:00] Somers.

Crystal: I’ve got questions about this connected device ability with a ThighMaster.

tom: Well, now.

Crystal: I’m just saying. Oh.

tom: Hmm.

Crystal: I think it’s the caffeine talking.

tom: Yeah, it is. Um, And you normally only talk to me like that when we’re not recording. I’m like, okay, it comes out in September. Ships just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Crystal: No, I… You know what? S- that’s a great point, Tom. I think it’s gonna ship.

tom: In time for Christmas?

Crystal: I do. Yeah. Because when they came out with all of their cross-training last year, that was in October. Mm-hmm. All the cross-training equipment shipped, the first ones, not everybody got it in time- Right … for Christmas or holiday season. But for those who were the first in line, they did.

Crystal: The very, the people that ordered instantaneously- Mm-hmm … got it before the holiday season. Gotcha. So I think there’s a good chance that’s coming. So we will… Just stay tuned because I’m excited to find out what that’s all about and share with all of you. We also know that Peloton… Now, I, there’s a lot of people, we talked about this in our article, about wearable [00:12:00] strategy.

Crystal: Mm-hmm.

Crystal: This was an interesting thing. People nowadays think it’s crazy for Peloton to even consider being a player in the wearables market. I get that in today’s market, I totally understand that. It would be crazy. But three years ago, four years ago, it was a discussion. Yeah. Lots of people wanted Peloton to go into this market.

Crystal: And I

tom: think they could have pulled it off then. I think the longer they wait, the harder that gets.

Crystal: Well, they said on the earnings call they’re not gonna do it. Their strategy with wearables is be, play with all of the, the above. I

tom: think that makes sense.

Crystal: I do, too. They wanna be agnostic. Yeah. They wanna be…

Crystal: They called themselves neutral and Switzerland.

tom: Because if they, if they release a wearable, then they become a competitor.

Crystal: Yes.

tom: And then everyone starts shutting down access to the API. Yep, yep. And now, now you’re a closed ecosystem, and I think that’s fine for the actual equipment. But for what people use to gather that other data, every…

tom: people are already [00:13:00] in their little silos, whether it’s Apple or Garmin or Fitbit or Whoop. And to start closing that out, I think o- will only make them smaller. And the upside is, I think, negligible in the grand scheme of things to sell a few wearables. I, I just-

Crystal: I agree.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: So one of the things I wanna say about this though, is they carefully said, “We already have partnerships with several major brands,” like Garmin- Mm-hmm

Crystal: like Apple, “but two more are coming.” Which means it’s coming soon. Right. Because they said it on an earnings call, which means it’s inevitable.

tom: Right.

Crystal: It’s going to be happening in the next quarter usually when they say something like that, unless something crazy happens.

tom: Sure.

Crystal: A lot of predictions are being made, but a lot of people wanna see WHOOP.

Crystal: Mm-hmm. And a lot of people… There was another one that a lot of people wanna see that I’m totally blanking on what it was. I saw a lot of people asking about COROS. I personally don’t think that’s gonna be one of them now, not saying it never will be.

tom: What about those Oura rings? Do those-

Crystal: They don’t. Um, but they, the rings are kind of more like the WHOOP in that they’re agnostic as [00:14:00] well.

Crystal: Right. Like, the WHOOP can really work with anything.

tom: Mm-hmm.

Crystal: So I’m not… I think Oura is like that too. Now, having something that logs all of your metrics automatically and does the Like looking at the data and figuring out, like, here’s the results that you need to hear most. That, that not all of them do equally.

Crystal: There’s always going to be shortcomings with that across different brands too, because not all brands are going to share data equally. Mm-hmm. And they may be asking Peloton to have agreements that share their data that Peloton doesn’t wanna share equally. Right.

both: Yeah.

Crystal: Not to mention, one of these things you need to know about all of this, it only works for you if you signed in to share your data.

Crystal: If Peloton said yes to Garmin and you didn’t say yes as well to share your data- Right … you’re not gonna have your data shared. Like, it’s- Sure … so, so y- I mean, I know that’s obvious, but there are people that don’t understand.

tom: Why is this not working?

Crystal: Right. Um, so okay. So that’s all. And we also need to say the commercial equipment is officially launching in the fall.

Crystal: I know we’ve been talking about this commercial equipment. It’s been coming for [00:15:00] months. Yeah. But it’s officially launching in the fall. That’s great, because that’s gonna be a huge driver of Peloton growth as well. It’s kind of fascinating that this is, this is one of the things we’re seeing. Also we did another article about it, but it didn’t make it for the cutoff in time for this, and I just wanna say, because I thought it was really interesting Peloton is gonna continue to lean into strategic partnerships, and one of those is with Spotify.

Crystal: I was fascinated to hear that on Spotify, Mexico has moved into the number two country outside of the US using content on Spotify, Peloton content on Spotify.

tom: Interesting.

Crystal: Isn’t it?

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: Fascinating.

tom: And d- so then the next question is why aren’t you in Mexico yet?

Crystal: Well, I mean, it’s not as easy as it sounds to, to do.

Crystal: Like, you can’t just be like, “Yeah, we’re gonna…” I mean, there’s a whole lot of things that go into- Sure … opening up that.

tom: I, it just seems like we’ve been hearing Spanish language- The- … classes are coming, and I know they’ve had a few, but-

Crystal: Oh, they… No. No, no, no. [00:16:00] It’s way… I think you’re mistaken. It has been way more than a few for- Okay

Crystal: a very long time now.

tom: Okay. But, like, you would think with the push into the… As they went to Austria-

Crystal: Mm-hmm …

tom: before they went to Mexico?

Crystal: I think that says a lot about the, all the things you have to do to trade- Yeah … to be able to sell things. Electric components, and, like, the how the safety FCC regulations, the equivalent of that in other countries- Sure

Crystal: having distribution set up, et cetera. I think, I think it’s a lot more complex than the individual realizes. It’s not just sell it in that country. Yeah. It’s all the things you have to do to go with that. Having said that, a lot of people who live in Mexico own Peloton products they have taken with them from- Right

Crystal: the United States. I’ve heard numerous stories for years about people doing that. Um, so that’s probably an indicator of what we can expect to see next.

tom: Okay. I wanna circle back around to, uh, something that you said to me off air-

Crystal: Oh, dear …

tom: about churn.

Crystal: Yeah. Okay. What did I say?

tom: And [00:17:00] I thought it was fascinating that they- Oh

tom: talked about their churn rates going up because they tweaked the messaging, uh, when people subscription lapses.

Crystal: So, okay. They mentioned a couple times on the earnings call that due to a one-time event, and they kept saying that, and finally somebody was like, “What is the one-time event?” Yeah. What

tom: happened?

Crystal: And, uh- It’s

tom: disclosure day. Hit

Crystal: us. Yeah. Yeah. Tell us all about it. Yeah. So they… So Peter was like, “Well, here’s the thing. Uh, we changed our algorithm slightly so that-” But let’s say the algorithm, they didn’t tell us what the algorithm, algorithm was before or after, but they said, let’s say your algorithm was you send notifications, let’s say three days after a credit card declines, telling people- Hey

Crystal: “Hey, you, you missed your payment.” Hey. “Do you want to sign back up?”

Crystal: Right.

Crystal: Yada, yada. Well, however it worked before was very successful at getting people to sign back up after- Yeah … they missed a payment. By changing that algorithm, it went later than it had in the past. Well now pe- they [00:18:00] changed so dramatically that people were no longer re-upping just due to the length of time.

Crystal: Right. So now they’ve gone back and tweaked it, put it back to where it was before, but the damage has been done.

tom: Right.

Crystal: They have, uh, successfully in some cases reached out to the people that were, that missed that window.

tom: Right.

Crystal: They have successfully brought people back in, but of course it’s difficult to reach all of those people.

tom: For sure, and you’re, you’re always gonna have some people that are like, “You know what? You know, I haven’t- “I’m good.” “I haven’t touched it in six months.

Crystal: I just-” Guy we talked to this weekend is a great example. Yeah. He hasn’t used it in three years, and he’s been paying for three years. Yeah. Three years without using his bike.

Crystal: I was shocked.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: I was like, “What? How is that even possible?” Yeah, why

tom: would you keep paying that?

Crystal: Because he might start using it

tom: Right. Like, I think-

Crystal: And then, and then that’s the thing … I- If he stopped, then he would never sign back up.

tom: Yes, I think there is like a guilt thing- Mm-hmm … of like if I officially unsubscribe, it’s a- I’ve

Crystal: given up

tom: I’ve given up on fitness. Mm-hmm.

Crystal: I think that is exactly what’s happening. Yeah. So yeah, that was a very [00:19:00] fascinating thing. And, uh, we have several articles about the earnings details if you wanna, you know, really dive deep on all these things. We have articles on all the subtopics, so you can, you can get into it and really learn to your heart’s desire.

tom: And, uh, that’s a great time to mention the newsletter. Yes. You can sign up for the newsletter at theclipout.com. When you go there, you get a pop-up that says, but not like a weird creepy one, that says, “Hey, wanna, wanna sign up for the newsletter?” Just put, plug in your email address, boom, and you get it-

Crystal: You get all the things

tom: whenever I remember to do it.

Crystal: I have seen a lot of people sign up lately. Yeah? We’ve had quite an influx lately

tom: of connection. We have. So, um, so and you’ll just get them all sent to you- Mm-hmm … like once a week. Mm-hmm. If, if we talk about it on the show, we, I include the link, and there you go. So, and you know what?

tom: Uh, I think we should take a beat, ’cause there’s a lot to talk about. We are not done with Peloton news. Uh, s- but we will have more right after this. We’re gonna talk about high fives. We’re gonna talk about their discount program and some tweaks [00:20:00] they made to that, and we’re also gonna talk about the New York City Marathon, ’cause we didn’t know where else to talk about it.

tom: So stick around.

tom: we have high five news.

Crystal: We do. This is really fun, I think.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: That you can now high five from your phone. So let’s say I saw you were riding, Tom, for your first time ever. You would never see that. Well, you never know. Yeah. You never know. Uh,

tom: but it- Can you imagine how many high fives I would get?

Crystal: Well, yeah, that’s true.

tom: Probably none, ’cause I’d have no followers.

Crystal: Nobody would know.

tom: Nobody would know.

Crystal: Nobody would know. But if you see your friends riding and you wanna give the… Like, maybe it’s a birthday milestone, maybe it’s a 1,000th ride or- Yeah … 10,000th ride, and now from your phone, from the app, you can send high fives.

Crystal: You do not have to be in a class with that person any longer. That used to be the only way you could do it.

Crystal: Yeah.

Crystal: Now you can send it from your device. How cool is that? I really love it. Um, I do, because it’s, the… You know, I don’t spend a lot of time on my Peloton app, but I love the idea that if I see a [00:21:00] notification for somebody, I don’t have to be in the class, because that’s a way for me to celebrate with people, even if I’m not- Yeah

Crystal: taking class. There’s been so many times people have invited me to their milestone classes, and I haven’t been able to make it. I’m kinda weird about my schedule, and I like to, like, only work out once a day. Mm-hmm. I know some people are like, “I can work out three times a day.” I wish I could. But there’s a lot of times I miss those.

Crystal: So it would be fantastic to get a reminder that person- Yeah … is riding, and then be like, “Happy birthday, friend.” You know? I really love that.

tom: Yeah. You can still be supportive- Yeah … but you don’t have to actually be sweating your butt off to do it.

Crystal: Exactly.

tom: Absolutely. So, uh, Peloton has added a new potential recipient to its discount program

Crystal: Not-for-profit.

Crystal: If you work for a nonprofit.

tom: Which, before this year, you could get that as a Peloton employee, right? ‘Cause they were not profitable. Isn’t that how it works?

Crystal: No. Isn’t that how it- No, you have to be designated- Oh … as a not-for-profit organization I see. That’s cute, though. I see what you did there. Yeah. Yeah, but no.

tom: [00:22:00] So if you work for a nonprofit-

Crystal: Mm-hmm …

tom: you can now, you-

Crystal: You can now get, yeah, you have access to their discount program. So just like with all the others, that means you don’t get access to a discount on your All Access membership, but should you buy new equipment, like the one they’re talking about in September- Right

Crystal: or October. They said fall. When I think Sept- when I think fall, I think September. The leaves are falling, so. Sure. But, you know, I was burned on that with the

tom: tread. You were massively burned on that when you received it on December 20th. So- And they were like, “It’s still fall, Crystal. Shut up” …

Crystal: they really were.

Crystal: And so I just wanna say, it’s September in my head anytime somebody says the word fall. But let’s be clear, that’s just the start of fall.

tom: It’s almost like it takes place over a three-month period.

Crystal: Shut up.

tom: It’s like it’s a full quarter. That’s-

Crystal: I

tom: don’t

Crystal: wanna hear it …

tom: coffee’s made you sassy. I

Crystal: know.

tom: I don’t know if we should record in- I know

tom: in the middle of the day anymore. I

Crystal: know.

tom: This is- Your sassiness. You’re a little smart mouth.

Crystal: I should start [00:23:00] making gestures at you.

tom: Oh, no. Um- Oh, drive them to the YouTubes.

Crystal: So, what was I saying?

tom: Discount program.

Crystal: Discount program. So you don’t get access to the All Access membership discount. Like, there is no, nobody gets- Right

Crystal: a, a discount on that.

tom: Nobody rides for free.

Crystal: But if you buy new m- equipment, yes, you get one. If you are an App Only or an App Plus, uh, there’s, like, three different, two different tiers of app, you can get a discount on those. So they exist. I think this is awesome that they’re adding another group. It’s really interesting that there are people that get mad though, because they want it on everything.

Crystal: Yeah. I also wanted to say, circling back to the earnings call, Peter Stern made another interesting comment- Uh-huh … about whatever is coming out.

Crystal: Apparently there’s gonna be a new modality that’s gonna have new equipment, and there’s gonna be existing modalities that have new equipment And he stressed that people who already have equipment will get a, quote-unquote, [00:24:00] “significant discount” above somebody who doesn’t.

Crystal: So I think that’s gonna be like when you see that price first come out- Mm-hmm … you better strike if you’re looking, because it’s gonna go up $3,000 the next time they post it.

tom: Right.

Crystal: So-

tom: And you’re spitballing on pricing- Oh,

Crystal: yeah, I have no idea …

tom: like, just to be clear. I, I was- We don’t even

Crystal: know the

tom: product

Crystal: specifically thinking of the tread. Yeah. Because that’s a good example. It started at one number, and then it went up $3,000. For

tom: sure.

Crystal: But- But yeah, you’re totally right, I’m spitballing.

tom: But we do have it on good authority that the ThighMaster’s gonna be 750.

Crystal: That’s true. Yeah. That’s true. We did hear that. We did not.

Crystal: So, I just want people to be aware of that, and kinda if you’re thinking you might wanna buy new equipment, you know, remember, this discount is there in addition. So, like, if you qualify, get set up now. Yeah. Like, don’t wait. Get set up now for that.

tom: Absolutely. Peloton’s next residency, Martha’s Vineyard.

tom: I’m glad they’re reaching out to the downtrodden-

Crystal: Right? …

tom: with these things. It’s [00:25:00] important to be inclusive.

Crystal: It really is. It really is. Uh, yeah, so the residency is going to be, I’m not sure who all is invited or who all’s included. I should… Everybody’s invited, yeah.

tom: Right.

Crystal: But, uh, Chelsea Jackson Roberts is going to be one of the instructors there.

Crystal: There’s going to be several things happening. There’s going to be, um, n- different classes. There’s gonna be breakfast. There’s gonna be, like, yoga in the morning. All these things happening over a few days. Now- In Santa Monica, once those classes were done and it was over, they ended up posting all of those to the platform.

Crystal: In fact, those are now can be found under a residency collection-

tom: Oh …

Crystal: on the platform. I have no idea if this one in Martha’s Vineyard will as well.

tom: Gotcha.

Crystal: But I’m hoping that it will. Yeah. Because that’s just kind of cool to see them out in, you know, like outdoors doing classes- Yeah … and out in the fresh air, and you l- just see them in a different setting.

Crystal: It’s just neat.

tom: Is it Rebecca Kennedy that’s always at Martha’s Vineyard?

Crystal: Well, not always. [00:26:00] She’s also doing an event with- Okay … Dr. Shane Amante. But

tom: isn’t there one of them that, or is it Emma Lovell maybe? There’s somebody I feel like that’s at- Well, Martha, Mar- … Mar- Martha’s Vineyard a lot.

Crystal: Well, Emma is from that area.

tom: Is that what it is?

Crystal: Yeah.

tom: Okay.

Crystal: Yeah. So, so yes. Yes.

tom: Okay, ’cause she did, like, her book signing there

Crystal: or something. Yeah. Okay. One of. Yeah. One of. Like, she did a tour, so it wasn’t just there,

tom: but yeah. For sure, but that was kind of a hyper-specific- She’s,

Crystal: she’s- … place to do one … specifically, like, grew up- Yeah … in that area, so yes.

Crystal: Absolutely.

tom: So you would think.

Crystal: Well, somebody actually said, “I’m surprised Emma’s not part- Yeah … of this,” but she does not, as of yet-

tom: Right …

Crystal: she has not been announced there. Doesn’t mean that all the things have been announced. Listen, things come out at weird times.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: It is possible we do not have all the information.

Crystal: I don’t know. I just know right now her name’s not on the list.

tom: But I’m, it was not weird or alone for thinking that.

tom: Okay. Uh, and then finally for this segment, the New York Road Runners has updated their entry rules for the New York City Marathon.

Crystal: People are super upset. So here’s the thing.

tom: Okay.

Crystal: One [00:27:00] of the ways that you’ve always been able to get, or at least as long as I know, you’ve been able to get into the marathon is doing their 9+1 program.

Crystal: Nine races, volunteer for a race. So participate in nine New York races.

tom: Okay.

Crystal: Volunteer for one race, boom, you have a free entry into the marathon.

tom: Okay.

Crystal: Obviously, that only works if you live close.

tom: In the general vicinity- Right … ’cause, like, you c- yeah, most people don’t have the means to fly there and, yeah.

Crystal: We are some of those people who do not.

tom: Yes.

Crystal: Um, so it was never an option for me.

tom: But if you would like us to be-

Crystal: No …

tom: check out the Patreon. Sorry.

Crystal: Um, so, the thing that they changed this year was now you have to enter a drawing to be part of that program.

tom: Ooh.

Crystal: Yeah. So it’s no longer- It’s no longer like y- if you do these races and this, this, you have to like sign up, you have to be- So they must have had a

tom: lot of people taking

Crystal: advantage of that, yeah

Crystal: you have to be chosen, and you now have to pay $99 to do it. And they said, yes, it’s because they’ve had so many [00:28:00] people- Yeah … sign up, and it’s just they just can’t, they cannot accommodate every single person anymore. So, so yeah.

tom: I, I’m just laughing at the idea that you have to pay to volunteer.

Crystal: Well, you’re-

tom: I, I

Crystal: get it

Crystal: you’re paying for race support on those nine races. Right. You are not paying to volunteer. Okay. There are nine races you’re doing, so that’s really not fair.

tom: Okay. Y-

Crystal: you’re volunteering for one race. Yeah. Calm down.

tom: Oh, I got told to calm down. But you weren’t paying before though, right?

Crystal: I actually am not clear- Yeah

Crystal: because I never looked that seriously at the nine plus one because I couldn’t do it. Couldn’t do it, yeah, totally. So, I honestly have no idea. But at, the $99 does provide race support for all of those races. Okay. So I think that’s worth noting. You know, you get all the things you would get for nine races.

Crystal: That’s not nothing.

tom: No, for sure.

Crystal: And if you had to pay for each of those events before, most races cost 50, 75 bucks to get in.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: New York City Marathon’s way more than that, but, um, that’s like 2 or 300 bucks. So that’s, I have no idea what the rest of them are, but let’s just say [00:29:00] the New York City Half, if you were gonna do that, maybe you paid 75 for that.

Crystal: Well, it sounds like you pay one fee for all nine races. Okay. That’s the way I read it.

Crystal: Okay.

Crystal: Again, did not do a ton of research on that aspect of it. It was the having to have a drawing to even get access to it that really just threw people- Right … over the edge. Yeah. So since we talked about Boston, that changing, I felt like we needed to sh- talk about this one.

tom: Fair is fair.

tom: Adrian Williams. Oh, no.

Crystal: Yeah.

tom: Can I say oy vey? Is that cultural appropriation?

Crystal: I don’t know.

tom: I don’t know.

Crystal: I don’t know. I- this whole topic has really been upsetting me all week, and I, I have heard from a lot of people, so I know it’s been upsetting a lot of people, a lot of people on a lot of different levels.

Crystal: For

tom: a multitude of reasons.

Crystal: So here’s what happened to the best of my… i’m trying just to give the facts here. Um- Adrian has a podcast called Great Things. [00:30:00] Adrian goes to restaurants, and he usually, like once a month or once every couple of weeks, he, like, talks about a restaurant, talks about the people there.

Crystal: It’s kinda… It, it, it’s on Instagram, on his own personal Instagram. Mm-hmm. It looks like a partnership of some kind, where he is like, “Look at this cool place,” right? Well, he went to a Palestinian restaurant, and, uh, when he did the video I guess… Not I guess. I don’t wanna make excuses for him.

Crystal: It’s just really hard to wrap my head around. Yeah. Okay? I’m trying to do this in a way that is fair to everybody. He posted a video and included pictures and images of the menu. The menu shows a map that does not include Israel on that map. People who… There are people who are Jewish and non-Jewish- Mm-hmm

Crystal: who have interpreted that to mean that it is the wiping out of Jewish people, that is what that’s representing. [00:31:00] They, uh, a lot of people instantaneously reached out to Adrian to express their concerns, ask questions. No response. And in fact… Well, I shouldn’t say no response. He did not engage with people individually.

Crystal: What he did was he turned off the comments, and then he posted a story at some point that day, which many believed were directed at these comments, that said something to the effect of, I’m paraphrasing ’cause I don’t have it in front of me.

tom: Right.

Crystal: The problem with the internet is it’s led everybody to think that they have an opinion that matters, and it doesn’t.

Crystal: Many people were very offended by that. They felt as if he was not only not listening, not only not hearing them, but also mocking them- Yeah … at the same time.

tom: And al- I will say that post is… I mean, it’s classic. I know it’s Instagram, but vague booking. It is. Of, like, and then if you-

Crystal: It, ’cause it could have been that.

Crystal: It also could have been referring to something we know nothing about. Right. Now, I [00:32:00] understand the timing. I understand why people assumed it. Yeah. I’m not even saying they’re wrong. Right. I’m just saying we don’t actually know. Right. Because that’s the whole point of vague booking.

Crystal: That… Right.

Crystal: Um, so, a lot of people then have reached out to Peloton asking for comment, asking for Adrian.

Crystal: There’s been a, there’s been a multitude of responses. Some people are saying Adrian should be fired. Some people are saying Peloton should do an investigation. Some people are saying Peloton should not allow instructors to post anything political on their personal social media. Now, personally- Yeah … I have a problem with that because this is a topic that, like, yes, is political, undeniably so.

Crystal: Mm-hmm. But also is religious. Right. And i- it’s, it, that’s what makes it so loaded, in my opinion.

tom: Right.

Crystal: And- I’m calling myself the average citizen. I’m speaking for myself. I am not aware of all of the goings on-

Crystal: Right …

Crystal: that have occurred over 2,000 years. I know that it’s [00:33:00] bad. I know there’s been fighting. I know there’s wars.

Crystal: I know both sides, at least two sides, I think there’s probably more than that. I know that the Palestinians and the Israelis, like, this is speaking with a broad brush, not everybody feels this way. Both sides do not think the other should have a say in certain things. Uh, there’s a lot of that. Yeah.

Crystal: And in addition to that, there are people who view… There, there, there are people who I, I only know Jewish people that think this. I am not saying that no one non-Jewish believes this. I, I just don’t know, okay? Right. So I’m speaking from a place of confirmed ignorance. There are some people that think if you do think Palestine has a place, or you think maybe they shouldn’t have been bombed for as long as they were, that makes you

Crystal: antisemitic.

Crystal: Right.

Crystal: Okay? So that’s part of the problem, because there is a very wide [00:34:00] degree of what can be seen from different people in the community as antisemitic. Now, the facts as I see them are Adrian has never posted anything r- regarding Jews or Israelis or Palestinians in any way, bad or good, before.

Crystal: Right. Like as far as I know, this is the only time that he ever has. I also just want to say, I do not believe that there is a place for antisemitism in this world. I also personally believe genocide’s not okay, and I also do not think, I do not agree with the tactics that have been taken against Palestinians.

Crystal: I do not agree with what happened on October 7th either. I think there is m- These, these are just my opinions. Right. What makes it complicated here is that some people would view what I just said [00:35:00] as not supporting Jewish people, and that hurts me deeply because I, I do. I do support Jewish people. And, um, this, that’s why this topic has been so difficult for me.

Crystal: It’s why I haven’t agreed to writing an article because I, I wanted the chance to say it from my heart.

Crystal: Right.

Crystal: And listen, we have a lot of listeners who are Jewish. I am very well aware of that. I have had my Jewish friends, some of my Jewish friends have reached out to me this week. Some have been very upset.

Crystal: Some have been like, “This is a big nothing burger,” “th- that people are overreacting.” My point is there is a wide range of reactions in, within the community.

tom: Right.

Crystal: But everyone does seem to agree on this point. Peloton should do or say something, and they haven’t. It has started to turn into a media thing.

Crystal: I have seen screenshots of things that indicate we will be seeing more of [00:36:00] that. There are people that are specifically trying to push this to get onto the media. I think Peloton needs to find a way to respond that is appropriate. However, I will also say I don’t know what that is because there are going to be people that don’t think it’s right on both sides- Yeah

Crystal: no matter what they do.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: And that’s a, that’s a really tough place to be.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: A really tough place. I can understand Why their response is nothing.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: Especially because there’s a blackout period before and after earnings calls. I think their blackout period past earnings calls is over. I don’t think that’s actually why at this point.

tom: Right.

Crystal: But there is a moment that you can’t talk about things. Right. So yeah.

tom: And it’s not as easy as just saying like, “Don’t post anything political.” Mm-hmm. Because we live in a world where almost everything’s political. Yeah. When you have as many as many g- gay instructors as you have their, them being gay is political [00:37:00] to a lot of people.

tom: It is. It is. And so what’s a Cody supposed to do?

Crystal: Right.

tom: You know?

Crystal: Well, and, and, I mean, I’ve read a lot of comments, and there are people that for, have said, “Well, Cody’s okay because he doesn’t post anything political.” Uh, it’s like it depends on what your viewpoints are- Yeah … on whether or not it’s okay, and that’s what makes this so hard.

Crystal: Yeah.

Crystal: That’s what makes all of it so, so hard. I don’t know the right answer. I, again, I will say antisemitism is not okay. I, I don’t… There’s no, there’s, that’s just a full stop.

Crystal: Right.

Crystal: However I don’t know. I give Adrian some grace that like, did he even know Israel wasn’t on that map? Now, I have gotten severe pushback from that.

Crystal: Like, “You’re crazy, girl, if you think that for two seconds.”

Crystal: Right.

Crystal: Maybe. But like, I will just say this: you could show me a picture of Missouri and not show where I grew up in the middle of the state on there, and I don’t know that I would notice that.

tom: Man, when we do trivia night and they’re like, “Name the eight states that [00:38:00] border Missouri,” I’m like- Gosh

tom: “Illinois. I’m out.”

Crystal: I know, right? It’s like, Kansas? And then I’m out.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: And like I realize that, that I sound stupid. Yeah. Like, I, I accept that. I’m trying to be vulnerable and honest. Yeah. You know? The bottom line is I hate that people are hurting. I hate that people felt disregarded. I hate that they felt like they didn’t matter.

Crystal: And I, one of my Jewish friends said to me that there was no other way to take it other than it was an aggression towards Jewish people because so many people in America hate Jewish people, and that really broke my heart. I mean, genuinely I hate all the hatred. I it’s so, so upsetting. I just I can’t solve any of this.

Crystal: Yeah. If I could, I would not be in a Midwestern basement recording a podcast right now. Yeah, we would be- I would have a lot more power and influence than I do.

tom: Yes.

Crystal: I, I, all I can say is [00:39:00] I support you. That’s why I’m having this conversation, even though it is tremendously difficult for me, and I feel like I’m gonna get hate from some people.

Crystal: Yeah. I am putting myself out there and trying to do the best that I can, because I know how much it means to people to be heard.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: And that’s why I’m trying to do this. So that… I don’t know what else to say.

tom: Okay. Moving along.

Crystal: Okay.

tom: Okay. Ash Pryor confirmed as a Pilates instructor.

Crystal: This is really exciting news.

Crystal: She received her Pi- Pilates certificate, teaching certificate last year.

tom: Mm-hmm.

Crystal: And then, of course, we had three new Pilates instructors that were announced in December.

tom: Right.

Crystal: So we all thought, “Oh gosh, it’s gonna be any day now,” and then it wasn’t. Yeah. We had to wait so long. We are so excited to see Ash Pryor teaching, not just on the row.

Crystal: We love to see her on the row. We love seeing her-

tom: Yeah …

Crystal: teach her classes, but there are so many people that are really excited to be able to take classes who don’t have a [00:40:00] row.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: And so this is that, and congratulations to Ash. I know she’s worked really hard for this.

tom: Absolutely.

tom: Jocelyn Thompson-Ruhel was on the Today Show.

Crystal: Yes. I believe it’s specifically the Australian Today Show.

tom: Ooh.

Crystal: I don’t know how the differs are. I believe

tom: it’s the Good Day Show.

Crystal: Oh, is it? Yeah. Is it? Uh, but yes, while she was in Australia, she was, she finished her City to Surf and, oh my gosh, Tim Robards. I was totally blanking on his name for a second. Yeah. Uh, he was there because I think it’s just, that’s just the rules in Australia. For

tom: sure.

Crystal: And, uh, and then she was featured on the Today Show. So congratulations to Jocelyn. She’s having quite the month.

tom: And it’s good for Peloton to get that much exposure- Absolutely

tom: in Australia, um, a market that they’re relatively new in and not near as firmly established as they are in the States, so.

Crystal: Yeah, it’s a big deal.

tom: Uh, Rebecca Kennedy to host a Hylit+ completion celebration.

Crystal: Yeah, I saw this last week on Rebecca’s story, and I just thought it was really cool. She, it, yes, it’s through Peloton, [00:41:00] but I just feel strongly this was Rebecca’s idea.

both: Mm-hmm.

Crystal: People have loved Hylit. It is the most successful program, both of them- Yeah … that Peloton’s ever had. And that’s saying a lot, because we know how successful Crusher Core was. There’s been lots of successful programs over the year, the years. But Hy- Hylit+ is a seven-week long program, and Rebecca Kennedy said, “You know what?

Crystal: I wanna have a party.” So in New York City, on August 27th, they are having a party. So she posted about this on Friday, maybe it was Thursday, so that people on Monday knew that the link was coming.

both: Yeah.

Crystal: First come first serve. First 100 people get in, nobody else does. And we actually have one of our listeners, Rhonda Pickerel, is going to be there.

both: Oh,

Crystal: cool. I’m very excited about for her. She is just thrilled to death. Anybody that got in appears to be thrilled to death to be able to be part of this. I think it might be the first time they’ve ever had a celebration finishing a specific program in the studio. So very cool [00:42:00] historical moment to be part of.

tom: So PSL lobby-

Crystal: Yeah …

tom: has been the source of controversy.

Crystal: It has.

tom: Because when they were-

Crystal: When they said, “We’re not doing classes on weekends anymore.” “

tom: We’re not doing classes on weekends, but we’ll, we’ll, you can hang out in our lobby if you want.” Uh-huh. And Dennis Morton said, “That sounds like fun.”

Crystal: It does. “

tom: I’m not too good to hang out in the lobby.”

tom: And so he’s teaching a PSL yoga class right there in the lobby.

Crystal: I thought this was fun because- Yeah … uh, as you know, there are many instructors going over to PSL this summer, and w- they’ve been doing some fun, like, “Oh, you didn’t, you didn’t get into the Alex class?” Yeah. “You didn’t get into the, the what- the whatever class?

Crystal: Do this.” Well, this was kind of a similar situation. There were lots of people that couldn’t make it into the Dennis classes, so okay, how about you take a, a yoga class with him in the lobby? And it’s really cool because it will never be on the platform. Yeah. It’s not being recorded, so- Oh, well, yeah, I guess-

Crystal: this is like a really special moment.

tom: Yeah, what are they gonna do, bust out iPhones? Right. They don’t have the, their … Yeah.

Crystal: It’s [00:43:00] not set up for all that. Yeah. Yeah. So I think this is really cool. Yeah. It’s a very unique experience and, and how often is Dennis Morton in London teaching classes? Yeah. How often are you taking classes live in the lobby?

Crystal: And how often are you taking a class that will never be on the platform? Yeah. Like, those are some cool things.

tom: So just me wondering.

Crystal: Okay.

tom: You think he gets paid the same for teaching a class that’s not gonna go up on the platform? I

Crystal: do.

tom: Do you?

Crystal: I do. I absolutely do.

tom: I was just curious. Yeah. ‘Cause they’re not using the content in the same way, so would they want to spend the same amount of money?

Crystal: I think it’s part of his, uh… My guess is, now I don’t know how they’re- Mm-hmm. Th- this is just my guess.

tom: Right.

Crystal: I think these instructors are so vital to Peloton- Yeah … they have a base plus salary. So I think they get a base and- Sure … they get bonuses for things. So I, I consider this part of his base salary.

Crystal: Gotcha. That’s how it is in my head. It’s

tom: like when you’re a, when you play for a symphony.

Crystal: Right.

tom: You, y- they, [00:44:00] each performer has to do X number of performances a year, and they can dole them out to symphony however they want.

Crystal: That’s right.

tom: Okay.

Crystal: That’s what I think.

tom: Okay. So he’s like a first chair violin player.

Crystal: That’s exactly right.

tom: Got it. Hannah Corbin’s Pilates content returning to the platform.

Crystal: Yeah, she had not taught any of these for a while, and she was part of the Pilates team when it originally got announced, but then there was just, like, a long period of time where she wasn’t teaching Pilates classes.

Crystal: Now she’s back to teaching the Pilates classes. Clearly Peloton is leaning in that direction. We’ve got the sculpt classes, we’ve got the Pilates classes, both of those heavy on the Pilates. So, I think this is really good news for Hannah to be able to be teaching another modality.

tom: Okay. And, uh, coming up after this…

tom: Well, before I get to the coming up after this, I think I should remind people, while we’re talking about instructors, there’s more instructors over in the Patreon. Mm-hmm. We will be talking about a class that, uh- … that was not well [00:45:00] received.

Crystal: Yeah.

tom: And so, uh- If you want

Crystal: to see my petty side, it’s coming out.

tom: All that’s over on the Patreon. But what’s coming up for you after this is, uh, the latest Artist Series, or Serieses es.

Crystal: Exactly.

tom: Uh, there’s a whole bunch going on there. And we will also dig into content, the TCO Top 5, and all the classes that we think you should be paying attention to, so you can be at the ready when they hit the platform, so stick around.

tom: N Sync- Yes … is your latest artist series.

Crystal: Yes, and it’s a really big part of this boy band challenge- Mm-hmm … we talked about last week. So-

tom: Oh, are they gonna have, like, a knife fight?

Crystal: Well, I don’t think they’re gonna have a knife fight, but I do think there’s gonna be a couple of instructors, like, battling, like, battling the bands, okay?

tom: Oh, I was hoping that they were just having a boy band knife fight.

Crystal: Well, that sounds kinda dark.

tom: I don’t know who’s gonna win.

Crystal: That sounds [00:46:00] messy.

tom: But I feel like O-Town would lose.

Crystal: O-Town?

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: What’s, what is O-Town?

tom: Yeah, exactly.

Crystal: Okay. Yeah. Um, so, uh, this is N Sync, but we also have, within this two-week period, Jodeci.

tom: Jodeci.

Crystal: Oh. Did I mention I don’t do boy bands? If you had any question, I have never listened to a song by any of these unless somebody else has played it. Like, I only know- Yeah … Bye Bye Bye- Yeah … because people have played it around me. That’s the- Wait, and

tom: you, you thought you didn’t know about Israel.

Crystal: Oh my go- Please don’t.

Crystal: Please don’t make it worse. Okay. So Jodeci?

tom: Jodeci.

Crystal: That’s embarrassing. Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and then there, they’re going to be mixtape classes that are going to have a whole bunch of boy band artists. So there’s gonna be New Edition, One Direction, Jackson 5. So, like, there’s individual artist [00:47:00] series- Yeah

Crystal: but there are also mixtape classes. So they are leaning heavily into this boy band. Now-

tom: No, no 98 Degrees?

Crystal: I’m not saying they’re not in there. I’m going by other people telling me about this. I know nothing about boy bands. Okay, but here’s the other thing. If you wanna do the challenge and get the little,

tom: Badge?

Crystal: That’s the word.

tom: Okay.

Crystal: Then you have to take-

Crystal: Badge You have to take- … a certain number of classes. So to get your bronze, you have to take three classes. Mm-hmm. To get your silver, you have to take five, and to get your gold, you have to take 10. But here’s the catch. You have one week to do it.

tom: Ooh.

Crystal: That is a lot of c- It is quite the challenge … that is a lot of boy band classes.

tom: And to make it even harder- Oh, dear … if you’re taking it in studio- … they will have the temperature set to

Crystal: 98

tom: degrees.

Crystal: 98 degrees. And they all have to be in that collection, so it can’t just be, like, a class that includes one of these boy bands. It has to be within their collection- Gotcha … of classes. So you have seven days, 10 classes, get your badge.

Crystal: So if you’re [00:48:00] a badge chaser, this is your moment.

tom: Okay.

Crystal: Jodeci.

tom: it is time for the TCO Top Five. You have told us your favorite classes, and then we agree or disagree. Find out if you made the cut right now. Number one.

tom: Your favorite Power Zone ride.

Crystal: It is taught by Matt Wilpers. It is a 60-minute Power Zone, and Karen Smith said, “If you’re looking for an easy long ride, this is it. The main set was all Zone 2 with Zone 1 recoveries in between the efforts. A great class to flush out the legs during a taper week.”

Crystal: That does sound delightful. I am not gonna lie. Especially after I heard the one Elizabeth told me about that is undoubtedly gonna be the Unstackable next week. Yikes.

tom: Okay. Uh, number two, your favorite Classic [00:49:00] Rock ride.

Crystal: Okay, it was a Classic Rock ride taught by Bradley Rose on 8/8 Deborah, uh, Deborah Anzalone recommended this class.

Crystal: She said, “I had a blast riding this class. Brad’s playlist was so reminiscent of many great memories, driving around with the top down on hot summer nights listening to Journey, REO Speedwagon, and ELO. Great ride with great vibes. Brad gets your heart pumping and the tunes jumping.” Boy, I like I was there, you know?

Crystal: Yeah. Like cruising down the boulevard. I was there. I love it.

tom: Uh, number three, your favorite sculpt.

Crystal: So this was taught by Emma Lovewell, and it was on August 3rd. Daisy Mack recommended this, and she said, “When Emma recommends you try a new class type, don’t hesitate. Did I question if 30 minutes would feel too long?

Crystal: Yes, but she curated a class structure that has you working your core, totally on brand for her, utilizing mobility and weights that will have you, have you sweating and shaking in the best [00:50:00] way.” No comment from you?

tom: What would I comment?

Crystal: You know

tom: Number four, your favorite walk run.

Crystal: This was taught by Mariana Fernandez.

Crystal: It was a 45-minute class that was that came out on August 6th. Sonia Norman recommended this class. She said, “This workout was less intense with longer walking intervals than a lot of walk plus runs, but it was just what I needed. We got a new puppy a few weeks ago, and my time and energy for workouts has been low.

Crystal: This was a great way to get in some movement without totally depleting my remaining energy, and I felt great afterwards. The playlist was great, and Mariana’s coaching is wonderful, as always.”

tom: And then finally, number five, it’s your unstackable, and it’s a Hidden Hills. Wherever did it go? Where are you, Hills?

Crystal: It’s right here.

tom: Oh, there they are.

Crystal: This is from June taught by Sam Yo from June 19th. Matt Wright nominated this class. Now, he didn’t actually call it, uh, he didn’t call it an unstackable. I made a, I made an audible call here.

tom: [00:51:00] Okay.

Crystal: Okay? Because it’s- You’re

tom: Clubha Crystal.

Crystal: I can do that. You can

tom: do that.

Crystal: He said, though, “Absolutely love the structure and the calming and encouraging demeanor of Sam Yo. This 30-minute Hidden Hills class was brilliant. Great build at the start to set resistance bases for the hills and the cadence pushes, then well-structured hill and interval sandwiches to get the legs fizzing and the heart racing.

Crystal: Awesome, awesome ride.” I love the British. So fun. I would never think to say l- legs fizzing, but I am a, I’m here for it.

tom: But you know exactly what it means.

Crystal: I do. I do. You’re like- It’s so… It’s just the perfect words.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: Perfect. Fun.

tom: When my legs fizz, it’s like, “Oh, I need an extra Flomax.”

Crystal: Oh my God.

tom: So we have two new class types, endurance walk and interval walk.

Crystal: Yeah. So, we’ve had endurance runs. We’ve had interval runs. Mm-hmm. But now we have walks. This is really cool for people who don’t want the impact of running [00:52:00] to be able to get the endurance aspect of it. So I love that Peloton is adding both of these, and people have been very highly complimentary of both of these class types.

Crystal: So super exciting. Glad to see both of them.

tom: The Peloton Triathlon is back.

Crystal: I am so excited about this. This was so fun last year. I don’t know how they’re gonna do it this year, because, n- I don’t think they have it all posted yet. But they… Last year, they did a 30-minute, 30-minute, 30-minute.

Crystal: Mm-hmm. So we had a, a run, a walk, and a row. Not in that order necessarily. Right. And it’s returning on September 19th. We’re gonna have all three classes. What’s really fun is that the people are in studio, and they’re running from studio to studio. I have to say that Matt specifically said, “Not running.

Crystal: We’re not running Peloton Legal. We’re just- … moving safely and quickly to the next studio.” Okay.

tom: So

Crystal: just sh.

tom: Okay.

Crystal: Okay. Careful.

tom: You know, they tell nurses not to run- I know … on a code red.

Crystal: Especially if you’re wearing those bike shoes.

tom: [00:53:00] Yeah. Like, it’s you- if you slip and fall, it’ll cost you way more time than- They’ll never-

tom: you would ever gain …

Crystal: And they’ll never let us do the, the s- the thing again. No. So, like, be safe, people.

tom: Yes.

Crystal: You are everything right now. You’ve gotta be careful.

tom: Uh, Robin Arzon and Tunde both launch split training programs.

Crystal: Yes. And s- it’s a split plus, uh, whatever. So, like, it’s a bike plus strength, or it’s a really strength plus bike is actually how it goes.

Crystal: Now, people have said over and over in the comments, “Isn’t that just a boot camp?” No, and here’s why.

tom: Okay.

Crystal: Boot camps traditionally have been very intense. The idea is that you sweat really hard. Right. You run really fast, then you hop off, you lift, lift, lift, and then you hop back m- in some cases, you hop back on the tread, you do it again, or the bike.

tom: Replicating the intensity-

Crystal: Of a boot camp …

tom: of basic training in the military.

Crystal: You got it, Tom. Yeah. Well, in this case, what they’re doing is, one, it’s a program, so it’s five days long, five different programs, and it is strength [00:54:00] intensive with cardio added. And so they’re actually quite different because the strength is split up in a way that you’re going to get a full body workout each of the days that you do it-

Crystal: Mm-hmm

Crystal: over the whole program, and they’re repeatable, right? So you can take a split that’s a week long, and then you can repeat it for four weeks, keep increasing your weights. You’ve now done an entire program. Right. Well, that’s very different than taking one boot camp class, right? Yeah. So there are actually really big differences between the two, but lots of smart alecs-

Crystal: in the comments. For sure. So, so just wanted to explain.

tom: The PSL Carnival Run Club now open for booking, although by the time you hear this…

Crystal: It probably will be gone.

tom: Right.

Crystal: But, uh, this is the first time we’ve had a PSL Carnival Run Club. We’ve done Run Club many times, but it’s the first time we’ve had a Carnival.

Crystal: Gotcha. And, uh, Hannah Frankson will be the one leading the Run Club, so that’ll be super fun for the London crowd.

tom: Get your Brazilians [00:55:00] ready.

Crystal: Well, you should probably assume you’re gonna need to wear clothes.

tom: Oh, okay.

Crystal: Yeah.

tom: Okay.

Crystal: Yeah.

tom: Christine D’Ercole has added a 9/11 memorial class.

Crystal: Yes, and, uh, I think that she’s done one of these every year that Peloton’s been around.

Crystal: I’m- Okay … pretty sure. But it has been scheduled. It is on the schedule, so it’s something to look forward to.

tom: And also, 25th-

Crystal: No …

tom: anniversary.

Crystal: It is not. Yeah. Is it? Oh my God, it is.

tom: Yeah. How did that happen?

Crystal: Wow, I’m old.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: I can still remember that day-

tom: Oh,

Crystal: for sure … so, so vivid. I know, probably everybody can.

Crystal: And

tom: we, we weren’t there, right?

Crystal: No. Like, it’s the worst- I can’t even… And yeah, we’re talking to people- … watching it on TV. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

tom: But,

Crystal: My company, like, everybody just went on like nothing happened. I was so upset. Yeah. I was so upset. I like, I wanted to leave. I was so, so mad because they just acted like it was no big deal.

tom: Yeah.

Crystal: And I was like horrified. Horrified.

tom: Yeah. Peloton, uh, [00:56:00] is kind of repurposing some of their existing content to help people train for the 2026 Oxford Half Marathon.

Crystal: Yes. Peloton has a- announced that they are officially partners with the Oxford Half Marathon, so they’re training partners. Mm-hmm. And they are using the Road To Half to encourage people to get ready for their half marathon.

Crystal: If you can’t tell by the name, this is a British half marathon. Okay. Uh, and so th- I believe we’re also gonna have another run club in a- in addition, in advance of the Oxford Half. But, um, how cool is that they are using it to specifically call people to, like, “Hey, train for this, this way”? Right.

Crystal: Like, I, I think that’s a really cool use of existing content and a way to get it in front of people who may have never seen it, even if they’re on the Peloton platform.

tom: Absolutely. And then, uh, there is a new Club Peloton Silver class unlocked for those who have been deemed worthy.

Crystal: Yes, and like a lot of these, Peloton has changed it now so that if you’re Silver and above, [00:57:00] you can ta- you can take this class live.

Crystal: Uh, this is, this is one that is going to be being taught by Benny Adami.

tom: Awesome.

Crystal: So you have that to look forward to.

tom: As we talk about in August, lots of birthdays. This week is no exception, but it contains the single most important Peloton birthday-

Crystal: To you …

tom: that there is. To all. This is objectively true.

Crystal: Okay.

tom: Just putting it out there.

Crystal: All right. I,

Crystal: I love you for that.

tom: Nicole Malene on August 17th.

Crystal: Happy birthday,

tom: Nicole.

tom: Happy birthday. Kirsten Ferguson on August 19th.

Crystal: Happy birthday, Kirsten.

tom: And then on August 20th-

tom: Which is where the most important Peloton birthday resides, and then two people trying to steal the spotlight. Charlotte Wiedenbach and Jill Foley.

Crystal: [00:58:00] Happy birthday, Charlotte and Jill.

tom: Your parents should be ashamed.

tom: They should have required you to either have been born one day earlier or one day later. I don’t care which, but how dare you? How dare you share a birthday with Clip Out Crystal and try to steal her sh- her spotlight?

Crystal: Aw.

tom: It’s hurtful, and we’ll never mention your birthdays again.

Crystal: Ah, that’s not true.

Crystal: That’s

tom: not true.

Crystal: Not at all.

tom: Okay.

Crystal: I actually feel very special. I… it… Charlotte I don’t have as much of a connection with, because I haven’t known her as long. Sure. But, like, Jill Foley, I remember meeting her in person and being like, “Wait, our birthdays are the same?” Yeah. And, like, I’ve just always felt very, like-

tom: She was very nice

tom: honored.

Crystal: Yes. Jill Foley was very sweet to us. Um-

tom: So we will allow you to continue celebrating your birthday on the 20th. Charlotte-

Crystal: Charlotte can too …

tom: you have to make other arrangements.

Crystal: No, no.

tom: No, no. So, uh, anyway, that brings us to the end of the episode. [00:59:00] Until next week, where can people find you?

Crystal: Napping. Uh, you can find me on Facebook at facebook.com/crystaldo’keefe. You can find me on BlueSky, Threads, Instagram, and the Peloton Leaderboard at Clip Out Crystal.

tom: And you can find me on, uh, BlueSky and Threads @tomo’keefe Jr., or on Facebook at facebook.com/tomo’keefe. You can find the show online, facebook.com/theclubhouse.
