Spin Wars Screening Hits Hamptons Film Festival Oct. 9-10

A Spin Wars Screening Comes to the Hamptons Film Festival

The documentary tracing SoulCycle, Flywheel, and Peloton’s rise returns to the region where much of its story actually began.

The Spin Wars screening is heading back to New York this fall, and this time it’s landing in the Hamptons, the same region where much of the documentary’s real story got its start. The Hamptons International Film Festival has set two dates for the film this October, giving anyone who missed its Tribeca debut in June a fresh shot at seeing it.

Two Dates for the Spin Wars Screening

HIFF has scheduled the Spin Wars screening for Friday, October 9, at 4:45 p.m. at the East Hampton Regal UA, and Saturday, October 10, at 5:45 p.m. at the Southampton Playhouse. The film runs 88 minutes and is programmed as part of HIFF’s World Cinema Documentary slate.

What the Documentary Covers

For anyone catching up, the film traces the rise of SoulCycle, Flywheel, and Peloton through the people who built the boutique fitness industry from the ground up. The Clip Out covered this debut when it happened.

Spin Wars Documentary

Director Philip Byron, a five-time Emmy winner who once moonlit as a spin instructor himself, spent years chasing the story before landing at Tribeca. We also interviewed him on The Clip Out podcast! You can catch that interview here.

The film draws on interviews with SoulCycle co-founder Ruth Zukerman, former Peloton Chief Content Officer Marion Roaman, and a roster of comedians and cultural voices including Katie Couric, Heather McMahan, and Mary Beth Barone. Early critics who caught it at Tribeca described a fast-paced, gossip-filled look at an industry built on ambition and, at times, considerable dysfunction. Rotten Tomatoes has logged largely favorable reviews so far, with critics pointing to the film’s pacing and its willingness to let insiders speak candidly about a business built on community and, occasionally, cutthroat competition.

The Hamptons Connection Peloton Fans Will Recognize

This stop carries extra weight for Peloton’s early history. Roaman’s own path to the company began with a studio called The Zone, an original boutique cycling business she built in East Hampton before her partners departed and Flywheel eventually acquired the operation. In our own interview with Philip Byron, he described Roaman and Zukerman as the two women he calls the godmothers of indoor cycling, and said Roaman’s story was central to why the project got made in the first place.

HIFF’s own listing for the film points directly at that history, noting the documentary features perspectives on the region’s cycling studios alongside accounts from the spinning devotees who lived through that era.

How to Get Tickets

This screening follows HIFF’s standard tiered release. Members received early access starting September 15, package holders will follow on September 17, and a members-only presale will open September 19. Individual tickets for both showings become available to the general public on September 22.

Whether Spin Wars picks up a distributor remains an open question, and HIFF’s programming gives the film another audience while that decision plays out. For a story that began in a handful of Hamptons and Manhattan cycling studios, a return engagement in the Hamptons feels like a fantastic full circle moment. Check it out if you can!
