Transcript:
Crystal: Welcome to the Clip Out Podcast, episode 479. This is Crystal O’Keefe.
Tom: And this is Tom O’Keefe.
Crystal: Hi. My
Tom: clock’s not working.
Crystal: I know. Every week.
Tom: I said clock.
Crystal: Oh, boy.
Tom: Hi.
Crystal: Hi.
Tom: Now it’s functioning. Oh, happy day.
Crystal: Yay.
Tom: Yeah. So, um, uh, I don’t know. I don’t really have anything to say here. Okay. I’ve got [00:01:00] nothing to say.
Crystal: Nothing to say.
Tom: So it should be a short episode.
Crystal: All right.
Tom: Fingers crossed. So let’s just do it. What, pray tell, do you have in store for people?
Crystal: I guess I should have looked at the list, huh?
Crystal: I’m kidding. Okay, so we are gonna talk about the latest Android Peloton offering. It’s been a minute- Yeah … since we’ve had an Android update-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: about
Tom: Peloton. They finally got all of, uh, Steven Little’s class posted.
Crystal: Oh my God.
Tom: That’s how far behind they are.
Crystal: Oh my God. Somebody yesterday in the TCO top five, okay, which is about what classes you wanna see, right?
Tom: Sure.
Crystal: Or what classes were your favorite. That’s actually the question.
Tom: Yeah. Well…
Crystal: They were like, “I want Peloton, you should bring back Steven Little and Jennifer Jacobs’ classes.” And I was like, “Girl, this isn’t Peloton, so whatever- … whatever you’re asking for, you can go submit it in the form- Yeah … anytime you would like- Yeah
Crystal: but like this is not Peloton- Yeah … and they’re never going to read it.” Yeah. Like, what? What? What? What is [00:02:00] happening?
Tom: People are so crazy.
Crystal: They are so crazy. Oh. Uh, also on a not, not funny note Peloton’s layoffs appear to be continuing. Yeah. We also have on the exact opposite side of things, Peloton having a giant new partnership with the US Open.
Speaker 6: Okay.
Crystal: Can’t say that I’m shocked about this one, but I am fascinated by the depth of this partnership. It is a deep one. Good Housekeeping has Peloton on its very short list of best workout apps. We also have a huge appe- apparel sample sale and, uh, I’m excited to talk about the history of this.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Because there’s a lot here that people who are newer to Peloton probably don’t know about. Also, I don’t know how new this is, to be honest- Mm-hmm … but it’s new to us. At some point this week it became apparent that Titan Fitness gear is available on the Peloton website.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: I’m fascinated by this.
Tom: We will dig into that as well.
Crystal: Listen to [00:03:00] this instructor news.
Tom: I’m listening.
Crystal: There is an instructor who never… is quiet as a mouse on the socials
Tom: Dare I say a church mouse.
Crystal: A church mouse.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And, uh, well, she, uh, she had some things to say this week.
Tom: The mouse that roared.
Crystal: The mouse that roared indeed.
Crystal: Yeah. So we’re gonna talk about that. We’ve got, uh, an, uh- And
Tom: you will never believe what she said. It’s crazy.
Crystal: It is crazy.
Tom: In a good way.
Crystal: It is.
Tom: I’m just gonna say it. Like,
Crystal: I just-
Tom: Like-
Crystal: I’m gonna clap it up when in the moment happens. Yeah. Like, I-
Tom: I like… Yeah.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Living vicariously-
Crystal: Oh, yeah …
Tom: through her rage.
Crystal: Yes. We will
Tom: get
Crystal: there. We will get there. Okay, so we have the exact date that Leanne Hainsby Aldis is on the schedule.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Maybe.
Tom: Ah. Exact maybe.
Crystal: Maybe. Exact maybe.
Tom: We’ll be… Maybe it’ll be an Oasis Artist Series.
Crystal: You never know.
Tom: It’s definitely maybe.
Crystal: And then some competitor news this week. Okay. We got some NordicTrack, we’ve [00:04:00] got some Aura news, and, uh, we’ve got the latest look at the Artist Series.
Crystal: We’ve got some things coming up for September everybody needs to know about. Mm-hmm. There’s lots of new content dropping. In particular I can’t wait to talk about this run club, because Peloton has been making some waves in the run club.
Tom: Okay. Well, before we get to all that, shameless plugs, don’t forget we’re available on Apple Podcast, Spotify, iHeart, TuneIn.
Tom: Wherever you find a podcast, you can find us. While you are there, be sure and follow us so you never miss an episode. Maybe, just maybe leave us a review.
Crystal: Please.
Tom: You can also- Find us on Facebook, facebook.com/theclipout. While you’re there, like the page, join the group. Uh, it’s a great way to stay up to date on things throughout the week, so when you listen to the episode, you can be bored and be like, “I already know all this.”
Crystal: No, ’cause they like to hear our take on it. We don’t just report it, we analyze the shit out of it.
Tom: Yeah, we do. Well, you analyze- It’s called [00:05:00] personality … the shit out
Crystal: of it.
Tom: And then I just talk about random pop culture stuff.
Crystal: It works.
Tom: You can also, you could share an episode. You could share an article. Yeah.
Tom: All that stuff’s very helpful to the show, and, and is also greatly appreciated. And if you would like to support us with more than just clicking, you can do that over at, uh, Patreon, patreon.com/theclipout. Uh, it’s five bucks a month. You get early episodes, you get ad-free episodes, and you get all sorts of bonus episodes.
Tom: This week, speaking of random pop culture-
Crystal: Yeah. Yeah, we’ve got a good one …
Tom: this is, uh, when, when h- when, uh, interests collide- … your world meets my world. I stumbled through my weird pop culture stuff into what I think is the person who invented the wearable.
Crystal: It’s not as we know it today, but yeah.
Tom: But like- I think, I think that’s true
Tom: I think you can say this is the [00:06:00] first ever wearable, and you will never guess-
Crystal: In a million years …
Tom: in a million years who this person is.
Crystal: It’s a, this is a fun deep dive.
Tom: It flat out blew my mind. I was just like, “You have got to be kidding me, that this is the person who did this.” So that is over in the Patreon.
Crystal: What else you got?
Tom: We’re gonna talk about Eric Yeager’s running goal-
Crystal: It’s a big one …
Tom: which will also blow your mind.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: And that he’s g- almost there.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Right?
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: And then, um, a- and then Matt Wilpers-
Crystal: He just did a little peek behind the curtain …
Tom: a little peek behind the curtain as to w- some of the r- or one of the rules-
Crystal: To how classes get
Tom: made
Tom: to how classes get made and what they are allowed and not allowed to do.
Crystal: So we’ll talk about
Tom: that. And so we’ll talk about that over on the Patreon as well. And if you don’t wanna spend $5, if you’re like, “What if this is all just bait and switch?” “And then they don’t even talk about the thing they tease,” which might or [00:07:00] might not have happened last week.
Crystal: But somebody-
Tom: A- and- …
Crystal: called us on it-
Tom: Yes …
Crystal: appropriately so.
Tom: And, and then we rushed in a, a bonus episode. We
Crystal: got a bonus.
Tom: Yeah. But, uh, you can sign up for free. There’s free trials, so it’s seven days free trial- Yeah … if you haven’t done it, so give it a shot. Uh, also finally, uh, you can follow us on YouTube and sign up for the newsletter at theclipout.com, which is two finallys, and, uh, and you’ll get all the links and stuff sent to you.
Tom: So there’s all that. Let’s dig in, shall we?
Crystal: We shall.
Tom: at long last, Android users Strength Plus is available on your mobile devices.
Crystal: Okay, so there’s some interesting things about this.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Right? One, it’s been forever.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Okay? And Peloton used AI to create the app on Android. They used the… I mean, there are people too, but their engineering team- Right
Crystal: [00:08:00] worked with agents to roll this out. They didn’t have the time or the money to put into it with just people.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: So they got creative and did AI. Now, here’s the other interesting thing. There have been zero new classes added since last year But we know that Peloton is talking about new stuff coming this fall.
Crystal: Right. Right? And they’ve said there’s new stuff coming in existing modalities. They’ve said new stuff is coming in new modalities.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Could it be that they’re about to do something big on Strength Plus?
Tom: I tend to think yes, because with going that long without posting anything new, like I would- Why
Crystal: even bother rolling it out?
Tom: Right. You would think they’d be like, “Well, maybe this just didn’t work like they hoped, and it’s just gonna quietly go away.” I
Crystal: thought that up until a week ago.
Tom: Not unlike the Guide.
Crystal: I, yeah.
Tom: Right?
Crystal: Sad
Tom: but true. And, um, but then if all of a sudden there’s an Android version, yeah, [00:09:00] like why would you dedicate any resources to it if-
Crystal: Even if they were AI slow resources.
Tom: Yeah, if you’re just gonna let it wither on the vine, so.
Crystal: I don’t know. I don’t know exactly what it means, but I am intrigued. Yeah. And also part of the reason that makes me think what I just said is not true- Mm-hmm … is because recently you know how Robin did that new split, that bike or whatever it was, it was a run plus split.
Crystal: I get which instructor did which, but it was a new program- Right … and it was a split. Two of the days that she did strength training had benches include, included.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: That kind of started to happen once the, um, Strength Plus had really gotten going, and now we’re starting to see it more infiltrating classes.
Crystal: So then I’m like, well then how exactly are we… Like, what is the point of Strength Plus as opposed to taking the regular classes? Right. And maybe we’ll know that soon. Yeah. I don’t know, but I’m kind of fascinated by the whole thing.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: So.
Tom: So on the heels of talking about them using AI-
Crystal: [00:10:00] Yeah …
Tom: let’s talk about layoffs.
Crystal: Yeah, so-
Tom: Not necessarily they go hand-in-hand.
Crystal: They don’t. But it- They… I mean, maybe they do and maybe they don’t. We
Tom: don’t- It’s different positions it sounds like. Yeah. But it’s, it’s hard in today’s environment to not feel like that goes hand in hand.
Crystal: It absolutely is. And, uh, and, and let me, let me also just say that I feel like the layoffs have never actually stopped.
Crystal: Right. Like, they, I think they have been quietly letting people go across the company f- the entire time they’ve been saying, “We’re gonna save $100 million, this run rate, we’re gonna pull it down,” I think there have been layoffs. Right. We just haven’t necessarily heard about all of them.
Tom: It’s not just a big giant batch of ripping the Band-Aid off- Mm-mm.
Crystal: No …
Tom: it’s more, like, on the fly, like a slow roll.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: It is. And, uh, and that’s sad. But I, I, like- I understand it’s the cost of doing business and wanting Peloton to be you know, profitable. And that is a big thing when you’re a publicly held company to be profitable. So, I understand it’s necessary.
Crystal: Right. But it just, [00:11:00] it’s really sad, you know?
Tom: You can still not like it.
Crystal: Absolutely. Yeah. That’s where I am. Well, Dan Baron-Bowen, i- who was the manager of studio experience, posted that his time at Peloton had come to an end as part of a layoff after five years. He had gone from an assistant showroom manager to leading teams of up to 15 across customer s- experience, technology, programming strategy, community engagement, and cross-functional partnerships.
Crystal: This was, uh, this is just kinda sad.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Yeah. So,
Tom: that’s all we have. Well, we have, our only analysis of that is just-
Tom: Hmm. We just make a noise Moving along.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Yeah. Uh, Peloton has partnered with US Open.
Crystal: The US Open.
Tom: Now, is this affiliated with US Magazine?
Crystal: No.
Tom: Oh, okay.
Crystal: But I do want to say…
Crystal: Hey, breaking news, we just had somebody subscribe to Patreon.
Tom: Oh, it worked. My big tease worked, ’cause this is radio and they’re- Right … they’re listening and- [00:12:00]
Crystal: I don’t think that’s how it works.
Tom: No, that’s not how it works.
Crystal: Um, so the US Open, this is kind of a fascinating partnership in general because, you know, Peloton instructors f- for years now have been going to the US Open.
Crystal: Yeah. Uh, it’s kind of a who’s who. Uh- Yeah … apparently. Y- the US Open in general is a who’s who in- For sure … New York City.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And, um, I’ve always kind of been fascinated by people being excited to watch tennis. Like, I’m, I’m not a sports person. Right. So, like, you could say that for me about any of the sports.
Crystal: Yeah. Like, I’ll go. I, I’m not above it.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I just can’t imagine spending the kind of money that you need to spend-
Tom: To go to that.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Yeah. Um- We’re more like, “Will there be a concession stand?”
Crystal: Right. “Sure, we’ll go.” Right. Are the tickets free? Right. Am I in the shade? Will there be, like, easy- Yes … access to a bathroom?
Crystal: These are the things I ask. Are
Tom: there hot dogs?
Crystal: Right.
Tom: What’s parking like?
Crystal: So then I realized a couple… I, when I say I realized, somebody told me, a couple years ago, that, like-
Tom: Well, that’s how realizations [00:13:00] often work …
Crystal: I just wanted to say, like, I didn’t discover it.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: I’m just giving credit where credit is due, that Matt Wilpers, in particular, is very tied into tennis, not only himself, but, uh, his wife is very into the tennis world.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: And that is one of the reasons that, that he has been at the US Open for years now. And Matt also plays tennis, uh, apparently, in his spare time. Although, how the man has spare time between triathlons, teaching at- Yeah … Peloton, and the Team Wilpers I don’t know. Yeah. But apparently, he does.
Crystal: And the boy-
Tom: He also, uh, on weekends at the studio, works the juice bar.
Crystal: Oh, you think?
Tom: Yeah, he does.
Crystal: Oh, wow.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: That’s pretty cool.
Tom: Does all the things.
Crystal: Matt’s growing his hair out now too.
Tom: Oh.
Crystal: It’s become a little bit of a hair gate. A little bit.
Tom: Oh.
Crystal: Yeah, a little bit. Yeah. People, people are very happy that his…
Crystal: this is the theory. His wife made him grow his hair out.
Tom: Interesting.
Crystal: I don’t know. I don’t know. It’s-
Tom: You’re… Are you gonna make me grow my hair out? Both of them?
Crystal: Might be impossible.
Tom: Yeah. [00:14:00]
Crystal: It might be impossible.
Tom: I know, I’m like, “Well, I guess our marriage is over.”
Crystal: I’m- Nothing I
Tom: can do about it
Crystal: I’m happy with where you are.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: But anyway, uh, so now Peloton is announcing their first tennis partnership ever. Uh, so they’ve done, just to recap, running, basketball, football, soccer in Europe Hyrox, all of them. Yeah. Right? This is the first tennis one. And, uh, they are gonna be doing several things.
Crystal: There’s going to be a US Open experience, your favorite activation, okay?
Tom: Oh, an activation.
Crystal: It’s gonna be happening at Hu- um, Hudson Yards. I almost said 100 yards. Yeah. Not really sure how I got there.
Tom: Don’t know.
Crystal: Uh, there’s going to be a watch party at PSNY. Mm-hmm. So at the studios. And then, uh, and that’s gonna be starting August 30th.
Crystal: There’s also going to be a smaller RSVP only event for tennis conditioning class with Matt Wilpers at Hudson Yards. Uh, this is I think only 20 people. I’m sure it’s full. I’m sure it was full within- Yeah … five minutes of posting. It’s why we haven’t really been [00:15:00] pushing it. Yeah. But the, the depth of this partnership is really interesting.
Tom: Yeah, it’s a lot.
Crystal: It is a lot. It is a lot.
Tom: You were rattling off all the sports. I vaguely remember, didn’t they do something with cricket?
Crystal: Did that happen?
Tom: I don’t know.
Crystal: I don’t know. They’ve done lots of things in the UK, but I don’t think there was a cricket thing.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: There was clothing that was, like, cricket adjacent.
Crystal: Maybe that’s it. But I don’t remember there being a cricket thing.
Tom: Ah, okay.
Crystal: I don’t know.
Tom: They’re also looking for m- member stories.
Crystal: Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Good call. That’s
Tom: what I’m here for.
Crystal: Thanks,
Tom: babe. I’m here to keep you focused. I’m basically a project manager.
Crystal: So they’re looking for member stories, and I don’t recall how many people they were looking for, but they were, like, trying to understand people’s evolution in the different sports that they did.
Crystal: Mm-hmm. Was that what it was?
Tom: I have no idea. Oh. I just know they’re looking for member stories.
Crystal: Okay.
Tom: Look, there’s only so much you can expect from me. I feel like we’re, like, 15 minutes in.
Crystal: That was it.
Tom: I’m maxed out.
Crystal: You peaked. [00:16:00] Got it. Got
Tom: it. I am maxed out.
Crystal: Okay. Well, they were looking for member stories, and that’s different from the other members they’re looking for- Right
Crystal: for another thing we’ll talk about later.
Tom: Okay. So. And we have even more tennis in bonus, if you love the tennis.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: There are more tennis stories in bonus, ’cause there’s just so much.
Crystal: There is, yeah. And
Tom: we just didn’t wanna overwhelm
Crystal: you with- But, like, specifically Peloton related- Yes … not just, like, general tennis stories.
Tom: Yeah, we’re not just talking about, like, “Hey, remember when Challengers came out?” No, it’s…
Crystal: That was such a weird movie. It
Tom: was a weird movie, and now whenever I see tennis pop up, I just assume they’re all having three-ways.
Crystal: I tell you what the filming with the upside-down tennis playing was just so confusing.
Crystal: So confusing. Really, yeah. Anyway, moving on.
Tom: Good Housekeeping.
Crystal: Yes.
Tom: First off-
Crystal: Good
Tom: Housekeeping?
Crystal: Good Housekeeping. Still around.
Tom: That’s still around.
Crystal: I know, right?
Tom: Up next, we’ll be reporting on McCall’s. Or Redbook.
Crystal: Do they still have those? Does, does McCall’s still have patterns? I remember my mom- I have no idea
Crystal: going to the [00:17:00] store to buy dress patterns from McCall’s-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: to make clothing. Did
Tom: she make you a coat of many colors?
Crystal: I did not have a coat of many colors. But there were several jumpers.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: That happened.
Tom: A jumper of many colors?
Crystal: I did get some- A
Tom: coat of many jumpers?
Crystal: I know that every great once in a while I got to pick out the fabric, but only after she had narrowed it down, because there were expensive fabrics in there.
Crystal: No, that’s fair. And so she had to be like, “From this or this?”
Tom: Didn’t need you gallivanting around in a silk jumper. I’m not doing that. So Good Housekeeping has named Peloton one of the best workout lists, and it’s a short list. It’s not like there’s like 45 things on here- No … and
Crystal: they’re
Tom: just-
Crystal: No, it was-
Crystal: scooping them up … it was a super short list.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: So they were like, “Okay, here are all the… So if you don’t have a gym here’s the different Peloton… Here’s the different apps you can do. Number one, best overall, Peloton app.”
Tom: Right.
Crystal: The only negative thing they had to say was you won’t be able to take advantage of certain metrics if you don’t have Peloton equipment.
Crystal: Yeah. They’re like- That’s literally the only con …
Tom: the only negative thing [00:18:00] is you can’t use Strength+ on Android.
Crystal: Hmm. Funny enough, I feel like maybe they had inside info, because this says, “Strength+ app option for gym-goers.” They already knew that Android was out. That’s kind of fascinating.
Tom: I’m gonna give them another
Tom: here we go.
Tom: Hmm.
Crystal: Next up, though, on their list, ’cause it’s short, I’m gonna do them all.
Tom: Oh.
Crystal: Apple Fitness+. Here’s the interesting con: not available on Android devices.
Tom: Well, I mean, duh.
Crystal: Alo Wellness Club. Lots of pros, one con: not available on Android devices.
Tom: Oh.
Crystal: Sweat: no guided or live workouts.
Tom: Then what are they doing?
Crystal: I don’t know.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: It’s just workouts- It’s just- … designed for women at all phases of life.
Tom: It’s like-
Crystal: It’s just like, it’s,
Tom: it- It sounds like workouts for, like, it’s like MapQuest- I- … circa 2000. You just print it out and it’s like, “Do a jumping jack.”
Crystal: I think it’s like- “Now do
Tom: a pushup”
Crystal: more like the Strength app where, the Strength+ app where you like, “Here are the five exercises you do.”
Tom: Right. It’s MapQuest.
Crystal: [00:19:00] Yeah, it’s MapQuest. Except it’s in an app form. Right. You don’t print it out. Thank God.
Tom: So, uh, Peloton apparel having sample sales in New York City, and, uh, you’ve got thoughts.
Crystal: I do have thoughts.
Crystal: So this is Peloton’s first time at a place called 260 Sample Sale. Okay. So apparently, first of all, I love New York City.
Crystal: That there g- there is an entire business that is just dedicated to sample sales.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: God, I wish we had stuff like that here. Yeah. We got nothing like that here.
Tom: No.
Crystal: Not even a little bit.
Tom: Sometimes the Costco has free samples.
Crystal: That’s-
Tom: That’s as close as you get …
Crystal: literally it. And then the other cool thing about this is that Peloton has 80 to 90% off- Ooh
Crystal: of all of these pieces of clothing. Now, again, sample sale, so that means, one you can’t take this stuff back, just like- Right … that’s any sample sale. Also, it means there’s limited runs, so you may, there may be, like, five of one thing.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: There are going to be a range of sizes, but by the [00:20:00] time you get there, who knows what those sizes are gonna be.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: So this is very exciting if you live in the New York area and you are able to go. It’s happening right now, so it’s the 25th through the 30th. It’s at 261 Fifth Avenue. Everything is $50 or under. Everything.
Tom: Wow.
Crystal: The other interesting thing that I thought about this is does it mean that Peloton is about to do a whole new apparel thing?
Crystal: Like, blowing everything out- Right … to make room for something. Especially when I think about the fact that, like, I just keep thinking fall. Fall seems to be very big for Peloton. We’ve got really big, new things hitting.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: We’ve got these questions about will there or won’t there be a reformer?
Crystal: Will there or won’t there be new modalities? Like, all of these things are coming together. And then I think, “Well, if they’re blowing all this equi- all this material out, what does that mean- Yeah … for new…” And I’m hoping, because don’t forget, they have that new VP, had Sam Storch
Tom: Malloy. [00:21:00] Sure.
Crystal: And, uh, I f- feel- I
Tom: call her Sammy.
Crystal: You call her Sammy? I
Tom: do.
Crystal: Well, is she Sammy Sweetheart?
Tom: No, that’s been taken.
Crystal: Oh, okay.
Tom: Um- Plus, you’re the only woman I would ever call sweetheart.
Crystal: Oh, that’s nice. So there. That’s very nice. Yeah. Although I don’t think you’ve ever called me sweetheart, but-
Tom: No, but if I called someone else sweetheart-
Crystal: That would be a problem
Tom: how would that go over?
Crystal: You’re right.
Tom: I’m thinking not well.
Crystal: So, so Sam, she’s brand new. She’s doing big things in the appar- like, she, she’s hinted at, in several of her posts, so, like, you know, “Give me all the ideas because we’re doing- Yeah … things different.” I’m s- excited about what this could mean. Like, are prints back?
Crystal: Are we gonna have… Are we gonna go back to the days where, like, we have limited runs, and we could get excited about the stuff dropping because it was only gonna be there for a short time? I don’t know. My imagination’s going wild. I don’t know anything.
Tom: Here, just spitballing-
…
Tom: For Sammy.
Crystal: Okay. For Sammie.
Crystal: Yeah
Tom: Pe- Peloton jumper And you can hire Crystal’s mother to make them She’s retired now, so she’s got time. [00:22:00]
Crystal: Oh my God. And j- my mom- A Mc- … would be making a face
Tom: A McCall’s collaboration Peloton and McCall’s have a collab
Crystal: I don’t think those are performance performance wear materials
Tom: They’re moving into the, to the space-
Tom: As the kids say Okay As the marketing kids say
Crystal: One last thing I wanna say about this is people who are longtime members remember going to homecoming/HRI/ Mm-hmm /Home Rider Invasion back in the day. They, Peloton would do a sample sale every year- Yeah … during this thing. They would take all of the old stuff, and they would put it in these giant boxes that were like, “Here’s all the mediums,” and you just, like dug through it It’s
Tom: like how Walmart would do their $5 DVDs back in the day
Crystal: It was insanity Yeah And people freaking loved it Yeah It’s actually where we got to meet John,
Tom: Joe
Crystal: Foley.
Crystal: Yeah … Joe Foley in person Mm-hmm And, [00:23:00] um, that was, like, so cool. We lined up around the block just to see the sale It
Tom: was like one of those bridal sales
Crystal: It w- yeah, it was. It was insanity
Tom: Women were punching each other Weaves littered the sidewalk It was madness
Crystal: I remember walking, because we didn’t know there was a line, we came at it from the other direction, like, you know-
Tom: Yeah
Crystal: from the middle of the street. We w- so we walk up to the door- So you
Tom: butted in line is what you’re saying
Crystal: No, that’s not what I’m saying. So I like, I was like, “Oh, this is the line,” and then I look, and it’s like way down. So like we just start walking, and we see all these people we know. Oh, God, I miss those days-
Crystal: because we would just be like, “Oh, I know you from the Facebook” Yeah And then we would talk to people. It was just, God, those were the days. But my point is, there hasn’t been a sample sale since then.
Tom: Yeah
Crystal: It’s been that long It’s
Tom: been a minute
Crystal: So I’m excited
Tom: Sammie, leggings of many colors
Crystal: I mean, it could work Is what- It could work
Tom: Yeah
Crystal: I just don’t know that it would be [00:24:00] McCall’s
Tom: This would be a Dolly col- collab
Crystal: Oh.
Crystal: See? It’s-
Tom: Leggings of many colors
Crystal: I miss Dolly. I’m so sad Already I’m so, so sad
Tom: I got to see her a million years ago- I know … with Kenny Rogers
Crystal: I, I-
Tom: Not to flex
Crystal: I mean, it is a flex Yeah It is a flex, and- She was just a really awesome person and just such a light in the world. And, you know, I just, I only could wish to ever be that well thought of in so many places.
Crystal: Yeah. I will never be that. But I, I wish that I could, and I am so happy that she was here for 80 wonderful years.
Tom: For sure. So, uh, last thing in this segment Titan Fitness gear now available on the apparel site.
Crystal: Yeah. Uh, so again, I’m not sure how long this has been here. Maybe it’s been here for years, I don’t know.
Crystal: But they have all these kettle bells that you can get. Different colors. They’re, like, beautiful. They’re… I mean, they look like Skittles. Kettle
Tom: bells, yeah. They look like fancy [00:25:00] teapots.
Crystal: They do. They’re really nice. And then they also have the really nice round urethane dumbbells. Mm-hmm. So if, like, you’re, like, maybe you’re not a kettle bell person.
Crystal: Right. They’ve got stability balls. They’ve got a whole weight rack for your dumbbells if you wanna get that. And the dumbbells go all the way up to 60 pounds, and the, uh, kettle bells, they’re, they have some cast iron ones that go up to 30 pounds, and the- But you
Tom: gotta cure those … and the other- You can’t just put them in the dishwasher.
Crystal: Oh. And the other cool ones I was telling you, those go up to 32 kilograms, whatever that is. I don’t do math.
Tom: That’s for the UK- Um- … it was theirs to figure out, and Canada- … and Austria and, uh, Austria, uh, basically- Basically everywhere … everywhere else.
Crystal: Yeah,
Tom: we’re very… I don’t know if you know this about Americans, we’re stubborn.
Tom: We’ve actually just put a tariff on the metric system.
Crystal: Mm.
Tom: That’ll teach them. So Titan Fitness gear is available over there. You go check it out.
Crystal: Yeah, it’s really cool. Yes. It’s really cool. Let us know if you get any. Yeah. And, uh, how it compares to the rest of your setup.
Tom: For sure. Well, coming up after this, we’ve got instructors in the [00:26:00] news.
Tom: We’re gonna talk about Rebecca Kennedy.
Crystal: Mm-hmm.
Tom: She has had enough-
Crystal: Enough …
Tom: of the online trolls, and she’s issuing some smackdowns. And, uh, we’re kinda here for it.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: We’ve got another update on the Adrian Williams situation and how Peloton is handling that, and we’re also gonna talk about when Leanne Hainsby-Eldis is returning to your Peloton delivery device.
Tom: So stick around.
Tom: Rebecca Kennedy
Crystal: Mm-hmm
Crystal: Goodness indeed. Okay, so let’s set the stage. So Rebecca Kennedy turned 40 this past weekend, and side note, Andy Spear on her birthday did an entire, scavenger hunt-
Tom: Okay …
Crystal: for her and her friends for her birthday on Martha’s Vineyard.
Crystal: So, like, they all got to participate. He like… I don’t know how he designed it. Like, I don’t know if he had help- … or it was one of those- Yeah … already made things, but it was su- they had a great time doing it. Yeah. While they were there [00:27:00] enjoying themselves-
Tom: Right …
Crystal: rebecca was feeling really happy.
Tom: Sure.
Crystal: It was her birthday.
Tom: It’s her birthday. Her man did something fun and special.
Crystal: Yeah. And, uh, so she did a dance to Zara Larsson’s song that I already forgot the name of, but it’s a, it’s a banger. Zara Larsson, as it turns out, is not really that unknown to America. We’re just really out of the loop, Tom.
Crystal: Okay. That’s a side note.
Tom: Look, I’m almost 56- I know … and I, and I went to a Benson Boone concert.
Crystal: I know. This-
Tom: What- you can’t e- really expect any more from me than that
Crystal: I, I understand. Yeah. I understand. But I need to mention that she did a dance, a TikTok style dance.
Tom: Sure, as the kids do.
Crystal: Right. With her friend.
Tom: Mm-hmm.
Crystal: And it was in a bikini. They were both in their swimwear.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Most people had a lot of fun with it- Right … and, like, they were celebrating with her.
Tom: These things are very popular.
Crystal: They are very popular. I mean, it’s not something I would ever in a million years feel comfortable doing. [00:28:00] I can’t dance to save my life.
Crystal: I am like Elaine on Seinfeld- … when I try to dance. That is what I am like.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: It is not good. So now Rebecca, she has moves. And, uh, if you know Rebecca, you take classes with Rebecca, you know she often has dance parties in the middle of her classes. Like, it’s just a thing- Okay … that she does, especially her weight classes.
Crystal: Right. You know, just do a little boogie- Yeah … in between sets or whatever. And so she, she did her little boogie. The people, like I said, most were great. However-
Tom: Right …
Crystal: there were some people that said things like, “This is so cringe.”
Tom: Right. “
Crystal: Wow, you’re so into yourself,” et cetera.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: So- Rebecca went on to her stories, and I, I’m being specific about stories because it’s gone.
Crystal: It’s gone now. It was only there for 24 hours. And, uh, she was upset. Now she said… i’m paraphrasing. I do not have quotes for most of this. There’s only one part that I will quote.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: But she [00:29:00] said that she felt like she really usually ignores all of these things. Sure. She doesn’t engage with trolls.
Crystal: She doesn’t engage with anybody negative online. Yeah. She stays, she keeps it positive. However, she would make an exception this time because sometimes you just see things- Mm-hmm … and they just get ya.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And this one got her, because in her words, “Bitch, shut up.” And I felt that so hard. Yeah. So, so hard.
Crystal: You know that the person who said that, they don’t make content. You know that, right? Right. Yeah. They are not putting themselves out there.
Tom: It’s like… And like, look, I roll my eyes at a lot of this, these dancing things too. Me
Crystal: too, ’cause they’re not me. Yeah. I, I would feel silly doing it ’cause it’s not who I am.
Crystal: Yeah. I also didn’t grow up with a dance background and, you know, I’m not an outgoing look-at-me person.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: She is. Right. Like, she likes being- And
Tom: it’s wh- and why she does what she does, right?
Crystal: Exactly. You kinda have to have that aspect if you’re gonna be a Peloton instructor, right?
Tom: But also, these dance videos, [00:30:00] like, they’re not new.
Tom: Is this your first day on the internet? I just- I know … like here’s… And I’ve said this before, I don’t know if I’ve said it on this show, but the algorithm
Crystal: Has broken people’s minds
Tom: Has broken people’s brains
Crystal: You have said
Tom: this on the show Like it’s, uh, you- people are so used to the feed being tailored to the things that they want, that when something pops up that they don’t want, they do not know how to react anymore
Crystal: Oh, they know how to react.
Crystal: It’s just- Well,
Tom: well, no, that’s not how you react. You just keep scrolling Right,
Crystal: right? Like that’s the thing. Why do you take the time to post that? Like even if you think it-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: why do you feel it’s your place-
Tom: And here’s the other thing. The algorithm-
Crystal: Doesn’t care …
Tom: all it knows-
Crystal: Is you interacted
Tom: is that you engaged with the post. So now- So guess what? … you are going to be inundated with more dance videos because e- even if it, even if the algorithm knows that you don’t like them, they don’t care ‘
Crystal: Cause you interacted
Tom: Because you [00:31:00] engaged with it
Crystal: Yep, that’s so true. Rebecca also said that like it, in her mind, there’s just, there’s some people that are just really cranky and mean- Mm-hmm
Crystal: and that and like to tear women down. And she said that in her experience, it’s always been other women. Again, I’m paraphrasing- Mm-hmm … what she said. But I really, I feel for her. I feel for any- anybody, even the instructors that like they are just not my vibe. When, I feel for them when they get hate for things that like they just put out there with, with just fun in mind- Right
Crystal: with just their personality.
Tom: Yeah
Crystal: Because a- as Rebecca said, again I’m not quoting, but she said something to the effect of like, “Why are you even here if you don’t like- Yeah … if you don’t like… Like, I’ve always been a person who dances. I’ve always been a person who- Yeah … enjoys being silly and having fun.”
Crystal: And she was like, “And I do it in my classes all the time, so if you don’t like it, I don’t even understand why you’re here in the first place.” Yeah and it’s true. Like wh- how, I have no idea how you could follow Rebecca Kennedy and not know that’s part of the deal you’re [00:32:00] getting
Tom: Now, there is a chance they don’t follow, ’cause the, the algorithm will push all sorts of weird things in front of other people, but-
Crystal: Even worse that you would stop- Right
Crystal: to make a comment then
Tom: Yeah
Crystal: Because just move on if it’s not your thing. Like it, it doesn’t have to be for you. And I think Rebecca also felt like, based on what she said, she said something to the effect of, “What, do you have a problem because I’m, I’m a 40-year-old woman dancing in a bikini?
Crystal: Like, is that the issue?”
Tom: Yeah
Crystal: And it was a question she was posing, so it gave me the impression she felt like that she was being judged for being of a certain age and doing this. I don’t know whether that had something to do with it- Yeah … or not. I just think there are some unhappy people that, that like they are actually jealous that they can’t put themselves out there, that they could never do that in that way.
Crystal: And then- They turn it into hate. And I do think it’s a lot of times women tearing other women down because other women are living a life they would like to live. And instead of changing their lives [00:33:00] proactively and leading the life they wanna live, they wanna tear other people down and make them feel bad for what they are doing.
Speaker 6: Yeah.
Crystal: And Well, Rebecca’s got no time for that, and I am personally proud of her for speaking up. It’s an interesting conversation at, at a larger level about, though, that these are the instructors’ personal pages, what they post on it. Yeah. That relates to the Adrian issue. What’s okay to post?
Crystal: What’s not okay to post? How is it okay for you to in what ways can you interact with people who have negative comments? Yeah. What’s okay? What’s not okay? Like, it brings up that whole side of the conversation- For sure … too. And personally, this is just my personal opinion I think that if it’s your personal page and you want to call somebody out for being negative to you specifically I think you get to do that.
Tom: Yeah. I mean, I don’t have a problem with it. But I will say the lines are very blurry, right? They are very blurry. Because you’re still a representative of Peloton, whether, you know, whether you’re on your personal page or not, people are most likely there because [00:34:00] of your instructorness.
Crystal: It’s true.
Tom: And so it’s, it can be hard to disentangle, but, like, also good.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Like, good, like-
Crystal: Good for her …
Tom: you know, fuck these people.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Like, I’m, like, yeah.
Crystal: Yeah. If you wanna dance in a bikini on your page-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: dance in a bikini on your page.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: You know? And it, and it-
Tom: And I will.
Crystal: And there’s no there is no age limit or size limit or whatever. Yeah. You know? You, you don’t need to look a certain way to do that.
Crystal: It, I’m, I would never feel comfortable doing it, but that’s me- That’s you … and my hangups. Yeah. That’s my thing.
Tom: The internet’s a big place. Go somewhere else.
Crystal: Exactly.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I just, ugh.
Tom: So, uh, a quick update on the Adrian Williams situation. Peloton has invited, uh, Jewish members in for a conversation.
Crystal: Yeah. And, um, I think I read somewhere it’s a pretty small number. Mm. But I honestly can’t remember the, uh, the exact number in my head, and I don’t wanna say the wrong one- Sure … and, and be way [00:35:00] off. But I do know that members who were in the… There’s a Peloton Jewish group that those people who have been listeners for a very long time will remember that we had the original founder of that group on many, many years ago.
Crystal: Yeah. Um, and, uh, I don’t even think she’s in the group anymore. And, uh, it I still see posts from there, and she, that group did have members invited- Yeah … which was all I was trying to say. I also, I’m happy about that, and I’m happy that they’re going to have the conversation. I believe it’s taking place today, ’cause today is the 26th.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Um, so, hopefully some of the people who were invited will reach out to us and let us know how it goes. Yeah. I, I hope that, I hope it brings peace to everyone. I also just wanted to say I’ve received- Um, a lot of emails from people on so many sides of this horrible situation and all kinds of opinions, but the one thing that keeps coming up over and over again for Jewish people specifically, is that it wasn’t the map itself that [00:36:00] was the issue, it was the fact that it didn’t have Israel on it anywhere, therefore feeling to Jewish people as if Israel had been erased, therefore erasing them.
Crystal: I feel like I did say that the first time, but I feel like there’s a lot of people who didn’t feel that they were… that was said. So I wanna make sure that viewpoint is seen.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: And I also need to get back to some people, but I… they’re long, very thought- well thought out emails, and things have been really busy lately, like 60-hour weeks for work.
Crystal: Yeah. And I do not have the mental capacity to return those emails right now. But I just wanted to acknowledge that I have received them-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: and I appreciate people’s thoughts and wanting to continue the conversation.
Tom: You don’t wanna just reply with a thumbs up.
Crystal: I really don’t. I re- like these are very thoughtful emails- Yeah
Crystal: that people have sent, and, and I don’t… I in no way want to shut people down. Yeah. And I also want them to feel heard, and, and it’s very difficult to do when they’re like, [00:37:00] you know, like the equivalent of writing like three pages from back- For sure. Yeah … when you were a kid, you know? Yeah. Like, it’s… They’re, they’re probably not really that long, but like they feel that long- Right
Crystal: ’cause they’re, they’re so in depth. They’re like big, weighty subjects. You have to really think about your words. It’s not just a like, “Yeah, that makes sense. Cool.”
Tom: Yeah. For sure. Uh, Leanne Hainsby Aldis-
Crystal: Yeah …
Tom: is finally back on the schedule, and we have the exact date, but maybe.
Crystal: So here’s the thing y- we saw that on 9/14 and 9/15, Leanne Hainsby was on the schedule.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: And that would’ve been like 3:00 AM Eastern Time and 4:00 AM Eastern Time for those two days respectively. We were very excited. We posted an article. Everyone was, “Yay.”
Speaker 6: Yeah.
Crystal: They’re gone off the schedule. They’re gone. Yeah. Does that mean they’ll still happen? Possibly. Does that mean it’s a different day now?
Crystal: Could be. I really don’t know. I mean, sometimes when we look at schedules, this happens. Yeah. And, uh, it may go back. Like it’s not like Peloton has [00:38:00] never had an oopsie where they put something on they didn’t mean to- For sure … they took something off they didn’t mean to.
Tom: Left the camera on the whole weekend.
Crystal: Accidentally revealed that Jess King was going to be a tread instructor- Yeah … long before she was. Things like that.
Tom: You know.
Crystal: It can happen. It
Tom: happens.
Crystal: So, so I don’t know. Could be she’s back on September 14th and 15th, could be after that.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: We know it’s September, because she has said that in her newsletter, but a new newsletter came out yesterday- Mm-hmm
Crystal: and did not give a date. So we were all just like, “Uh-oh. What does that mean?”
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: So.
Tom: Well, as soon as we know, you will know.
Crystal: Yes. ‘
Tom: Cause that’s how it works around here. Uh, Jess Sims, her ESPN role just got even bigger.
Crystal: It did. She has a new hosting job for GameDay’s 40th season. She will be returning to the pregame show, uh, and now a co-hosting role, and I’d [00:39:00] had no idea they’ve been around 40 seasons, but, uh, wow.
Speaker 6: ESPN? Yeah.
Crystal: Yeah.
Speaker 6: I mean-
Crystal: I mean, I mean, it makes sense.
Speaker 6: Yeah.
Crystal: But yeah, I didn’t realize that.
Speaker 6: Yeah. It’s been a, it’s been around for a little bit there.
Crystal: You know, and it’s so funny. Can I just say that, like, people never stop surprising me, and this time in a good way. Mm-hmm. Because I thought that if we saw this, like everybody saw Jess Sims’ post about it- Right
Crystal: and I didn’t think it was… Like, she’s, she’s always such a rock star and she’s always like more, more, more with, with all the sports stuff- Mm-hmm … so this in no way shocked me, and like this post went like wildfire. Like, this was like, like Alex Toussaint yelling at Jennifer Jacobs wildfire. And I was so shocked by that.
Crystal: Yeah. I was just like, “Oh, did people not…”
Tom: Is this new information for people? Yeah.
Crystal: Yeah. And I, I gue- I guess that it wa- it’s just kind of a little-
Tom: And you know, that’s always kind of the issue with the internet, right? It
Crystal: is.
Tom: It’s like, it’s like there are so many things where you could post something and people would be like, “Oh, everyone knows this.”
Crystal: Yes.
Tom: And then there’s so [00:40:00] many people that they don’t know it though. Yes,
Crystal: it’s true. And yeah. It’s true. And that’s why when people are like, “Well, you never should have done blah,” let me tell you something about posting for 10 years that I’ve been posting. You just never freaking know what- Yeah … people are gonna run with, good or bad.
Crystal: Yeah. You never know. Yeah. So you can’t assume.
Tom: You cannot.
Tom: nordaTrack has revealed their connected Pilates reformer.
Crystal: They have, and it is being connected It is being compared to Peloton. Uh, I realize connected-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: yeah, so I fixed it. Yes. It’s called the Ultra One, and, uh, they are saying they are the Peloton of Pilates reformers.
Crystal: So they are holding Peloton up to the gold standard. I find this interesting for so many reasons. Yeah. Number one, I still think there’s a really good chance that some of this new equipment in these new modalities is going to be a Peloton reformer.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: No proof of that. That is just me- Yeah … [00:41:00] putting all the pieces together.
Tom: I wouldn’t run right out and buy this. Well- I’d maybe give it a minute if you’re a Peloton member already.
Crystal: So speaking of that, it is a $5,000 machine. And I
Tom: think- Well, definitely don’t run right out and buy it.
Crystal: Well, I think-
Tom: I was talking to you specifically. Oh. Okay. I was…
Crystal: Well, since we have no idea what’s happening with Texas but anyway.
Crystal: This is a $5,000 machine, so do we think we can expect to see that or more from Peloton’s machine, whatever it is?
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Yeah, I think we can.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I, I mean, that’s just, that’s how Peloton is. I will also say they, that NordicTrack purchased ReformRx, and that’s how they ended up with this reformer.
Crystal: Peloton purchased Скоп- Hmm … and its employees, and we don’t know what the outcome is yet.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Just saying it’s a very, there’s a lot of similarities here.
Tom: For sure.
Crystal: And so we will see, [00:42:00] but, uh, I find it fascinating, especially calling it the Pilates, like the, the ref- the Peloton of reformers because Peloton doesn’t have one yet.
Crystal: You’re right. Y’all might wanna slow your roll.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Yeah. That’s no knock on NordicTrack specifically.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And I have to say, even Echelon has one. Now, they came out with it after the other people did because Echelon doesn’t come up with- Right … anything on their own.
Tom: No, they don’t do anything before someone else does.
Crystal: No. Yeah, that’s- They do it after …
Tom: that’s the brand.
Crystal: That is their brand.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: But, uh, but yes, they do have one, so.
Tom: Okay. Uh, Oura is facing a class action lawsuit.
Crystal: Yes. So I thought this was interesting because they are being sued for misleading consumers about the accuracy of its sleep tracking features.
Crystal: Now, we learned this with Peloton. There’s this thing called puffery and, like- Yeah … you can make claims, and they are allowed. Like, you can say things like, “Best beer on the planet.”
Tom: Right.
Crystal: And that’s okay ’cause that’s puffery.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: [00:43:00] But it gets into this weird gray area about, like, what you can actually expect from that claim.
Crystal: Right. And, and Peloton faced a puffery charge, and I believe they won.
Tom: I think so.
Crystal: I’m pretty sure they did. Yeah. So this, for Oura, is saying that their their complaint specifically is that Oura marketed its rings as built for accuracy and advertised up to 95% sleep stage accuracy. Compared with clinical sleep lads- labs.
Crystal: The lawsuit seeks to stop Oura from making that misleading claims and obtain restitution for consumers who purchased the products.
Tom: Yeah, I mean, obviously we’re not lawyers, but that does not sound like puffery. Like, you’re giving spec-
Crystal: Medical
Tom: specific
Crystal: comparison … specific
Tom: quantifiable details about how your device is supposed to work.
Crystal: And instead of giving specific tracking, here’s the other fun feature, they use AI to determine [00:44:00] estimates-
Tom: Right …
Crystal: of your sleep tracking. Now, I know there’s a lot of people that don’t really care for Whoop for a variety of reasons. Mm-hmm. But it’s one of the things I’ve always liked about Whoop. It is so, so good at sleep tracking for me specifically.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I have no idea what Oura does or doesn’t do.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: But by their own, their own admission, they use AI to estimate- Right … your sleep stages. That’s not the same as- As tracking them … as tracking them. Yeah. And that, that could be a really big problem for them, so. I think
Tom: it could.
Crystal: Yeah. We’ll see how that one turns out as well.
Tom: Coming up after this, we’re gonna talk content, all the classes that, uh, you should be contemplating, or should I say content-plating. Huh?
Crystal: Hmm. See
Tom: what I did there? Got a new one. And we’ll also take a peek at the artist series in the hopper for September. So join us, won’t you?
Tom: september is almost upon us, which means a new batch of artist [00:45:00] serieses is aside.
Crystal: It does.
Tom: What do they got?
Crystal: All right, well, we’ve got… First of all, in September we have Latin Heritage History Month- Okay … starting. This is the one that goes from month to month. Yeah, it’s like September- Like, it’s 15th through the 15th
Tom: 15th through October 15th or something like that, yeah.
Crystal: Yeah. John Summit starts on September 17th.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: And I believe you pronounce it Juanes. Juanes. Juanes. Okay. Follows a week later on September 24th. Uh, they have four live classes between the two scheduled that are cross-running, rowing, strength, and cycling.
Crystal: They will also be on demand. And, uh, John Summit is a, a Chicago-born DJ, and he worked as an accountant before breaking into house music.
Crystal: So his catalog is around club-ready house and techno house. Juan was born in Colombia, and he is one of the best-selling Latin music artists of all times, and his catalog spans rock, pop, and [00:46:00] cumbia influences. So, fascinating.
Tom: Awesome.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: It is time for the TCO Top Five. You have told us your favorite classes, now here they are. Number one, your favorite theme ride.
Crystal: Okay. So the favorite theme ride, this is not gonna come as to a surprise to many people- Mm-hmm … but it was the classic rock ride two for one- Yeah … with Sam Yo and Dennis Morton.
Crystal: We told you months ago this is gonna be a class not to be missed.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: I had more nominations for this than we’ve ever had- … in one week for any class ever. Yeah. There were seven nominations just for this class, just for this one. It was something to behold apparently. I am going to read Andy Townsend’s nomination.
Crystal: There were many.
Tom: There were many …
Crystal: uh, and he says, “Well, this is easy. Sam and Dennis’s two for one classic rock ride from Sunday, the best of the year, the best that I have attended in studio. The music was fab. It was pretty [00:47:00] tough, and I laughed through the whole thing. They were amazing together. Will be doing it over and over.”
Tom: Okay. Uh, number two, your favorite strength class.
Crystal: Yeah, Jermaine Johnson showing up, uh, at number two. He taught this class on August 12th. It was an upper body strength. Back, Backstreet Boys.
Crystal: And, uh, people loved it. We had a couple of nominations for this one. Megan Hillegas said, “JJ’s upper body Backstreet Boys class…”
Crystal: I can’t say it right. Yeah. She said, “I always love his energy, but he was on another level. He was clearly having so much fun. The music choices were on point, too. I danced as much as I worked.”
Tom: Number three, your favorite walk.
Crystal: Rebecca Kennedy shows up. She will not let this Hiit Lit+ end without one more-
Crystal: showing up in the TCO Top Five. This time it was a 45-minute Hiit Lit+ easy walk. This was from week seven, day five. And Robin Luthy had to say, “I loved Rebecca Kennedy’s last 45-minute easy walk of the [00:48:00] program. Another insightful visualization about thinking ab- of the people in our lives, past and present, who, to add to our parade, who support, encourage, and uplift us, both during the program and life in general.”
Crystal: And a lot of people… I saw, uh, the, not just the nominations, but I saw in groups people posting about this class- Yeah … and how, how much it inspired them. Like, it really left something with people. So that’s magical.
Tom: Yeah. Uh, number four, your favorite recovery class.
Crystal: Okay, so this was a five-minute post ride stretch from Dennis Morton on August 6th.
Crystal: And our very own Roz, who has been a listener for a long time-
Tom: Yes …
Crystal: uh, she said-
Tom: And pointed out that we forgot to- … include something we teased in the bonus episode.
Crystal: She did. You know? Which I appreciate.
Tom: No, for sure.
Crystal: For sure. And she was not rude about it-
Tom: No …
Crystal: because she is one of our Patreon subscribers, and they are the most lovely people.
Speaker 6: They’re very
Crystal: delightful. So Roz said, “I also wanted to submit this stretch. Seriously, one of the best I’ve done. Dennis is always great, [00:49:00] but this was perfect. He explained everything and why, how to get more out of each exercise. He also explained how to use the bike just for support, not to lean on.”
Crystal: Isn’t that great? Interesting. I know it’s only a five-minute stretch, but, like, those are the kind of gems that- Yeah … like, you can’t find unless you take every class in the library. For
Tom: sure.
Crystal: So.
Tom: Which is what we have the TCO Top Five for.
Crystal: It is exactly what it’s here for.
Tom: Yeah. And then finally, number five, your unstackable this week.
Tom: It’s a walk
Crystal: It is a walk. It was an EDM walk taught by Marcel Dinkins, and, uh, Mikayla Lee submitted this, and she said when she hits you with a medium warmup, you know it’s only going up and staying up on the left side clicks. So that’s your incline for-
Tom: Okay …
Crystal: for those who do not Tread.
Tom: You mean me?
Crystal: Yes.
Crystal: Okay. She even joked, but also not joking, “When we played hard on speed, n- when we playing hard on speed, nine minutes on a 12, 10, 12 incline.” Nine minutes. Nine minutes. After five minutes on a medium hill. Sunday in [00:50:00] heaven. Well, Mikayla, you and I have a very different version of Sunday in heaven.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: But, uh, that sounds like an incredible workout, so thank you for submitting.
Tom: Moving along, Ash Pryor makes her Pilates debut.
Crystal: She does. And you know, um, I completely missed the point when we f- talked about this a few weeks ago.
Tom: Uh-huh.
Crystal: That she was not only debuting as a Pilates instructor, but her very first class, if you will, was in fact a program.
Tom: Look at that.
Crystal: So she made a splash.
Tom: Boom,
Crystal: there you go. She’s like, “I will be doing the whole thing, thank you.” And, uh, she got to do the entire two-week program of Pilates, and people are already taking it and saying how awesome it is. It’s a really good program, so check it out.
Tom: A Peloton outdoor run club gets not one but two updates.
Crystal: Yes. Oh, one of our writers had something to say about that since they wrote it and literally 10 minutes later, Peloton posted an update.
Crystal: One of the cool things that Peloton is doing is they have [00:51:00] a new run club series that is going to be a four-week plan. Mm-hmm. And they’re taking… So instead of just doing one run a week, which is what they’ve been doing- Okay … now there’s gonna be two a week, and they pair HIIT, endurance, intervals, and long run day with on-demand classes dropping twice a week.
Crystal: So we’re going to be seeing this series of classes dropping now for you to join every week so you can have your run club. Yeah. Your virtual… I love that. Having a schedule, and this is what the bike used to be back in the day. At 6:00 AM, everybody rode together.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: So having a run version of that, like, really makes my heart happy.
Crystal: Even if you’re not running at the exact same time- Right … knowing everyone’s taking the same classes, like, that’s really cool. I love that. So now it’s four training styles instead of one-off sessions. They are calling it Pure Performance Running Personalized. New classes released every Monday and Saturday.
Tom: Yeah, like you, I mean, look at them. They’re totally different links. So weird.
Tom: Mariana [00:52:00] Fernandes has a standing yoga class.
Crystal: Yeah, it’s a 10-minute standing yoga class, so you can do this anywhere, which is really nice.
Crystal: You know, um, Peloton posted this on August 19th, but we went back and looked, and it had been the first standing yoga class since January of 2024.
Tom: Wow.
Crystal: Yeah. Two and a half years- That’s a long time … since they’ve had a standing yoga.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Yeah, so hopefully that means we’re gonna see more of these. Isn’t that cool?
Tom: Yeah, for sure.
Tom: Jocelyn Thompson Rule and Emma Lovewell have a two-for-one hike
Crystal: And this is going to be at PSL, September 27th at 10:30 AM London time, of course. Sure. So this is another one of those really cool two-for-one classes that are very unique and special for the London team, since Emma…
Crystal: it’s not like Emma’s gonna be in London all the time.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: So if you can get into this class or you got into this class, consider yourself lucky.
Tom: For sure.
[00:53:00]
Tom: august is coming to a close. The deluge of birthdays are wrapping up. Our final birthday for August, August 31st, former Peloton instructor Kristin McGee.
Crystal: Oh, happy birthday, Kristin. She- And cur-
Tom: current Tonal instructor.
Crystal: Yes, and she just posted this week. It’s been one year at Tonal.
Tom: Wow.
Crystal: That went fast.
Tom: Wow.
Crystal: I know, right? It’s
Tom: been a year?
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: That’s crazy.
Crystal: P- maybe not since she was- Like- … on camera …
Tom: public.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Right. Yeah.
Crystal: Yeah. ‘Cause you know there’s always that.
Tom: There’s that, then they gotta train you and get you up to speed- Yeah, yeah … and, you know, the orientation and, yeah.
Crystal: But she started at Tonal a year ago.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I think that’s really cool.
Tom: Absolutely. So, uh, that’s it for this episode. We have come to a close. Until next week, where can people find you?
Crystal: People can find me on Facebook at facebook.com/crystaldo’keefe.
Crystal: You can find me on Bluesky, Threads, Instagram, and the Peloton Leaderboard @cliphelcrystal.
Tom: And you can find me on Bluesky and Threads @tomokeefejr or on Facebook at facebook.com/tomokeeffe. Find the show online at [00:54:00] facebook.com/theclipout. While you’re there, like the page, join the group. Of course, don’t forget our Patreon.
Tom: You know you wanna find out who invented the wearable. You’ll never guess it. But when you hear it, you’ll be like- Oh … “I understand why that popped up in Tom’s Facebook feed.” Yeah,
Crystal: you will.
Tom: You’ll be like, “That-” You
Crystal: will say that. “…
Tom: that makes total sense.”
Crystal: Definitely.
Tom: And no, it was not one of the Monkees.
Crystal: No.
Crystal: That would be a good guess.
Tom: Yes.
Crystal: But no. But no. Zero Monkees involved.
Tom: Zero Monkees involved. Yeah. So, so yeah, so that’s it for this one. Thanks for tuning in, and until next time, keep pedaling.
Crystal: And running.
Tom: And rowing. Bye.
