Peloton Faces a New Patent Infringement Lawsuit

There’s a new Peloton patent infringement lawsuit to watch. It was filed July 24 by Flow Motion Research and Development Ltd. in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division. The case, numbered 2:26-cv-00610, names Peloton Interactive, Inc. as the sole defendant and demands a jury trial.

Peloton patent infringement lawsuit details

Flow Motion asserts three patents against Peloton: US9,987,520, issued in 2018, US11,745,055, issued in 2023, and US12,157,035, issued in 2024. All three share the title “Method and System for Monitoring and Feed-Backing on Execution of Physical Exercise Routines” and list the same three inventors, Arie Shavit, Idit Perl Shavit, and Alon Shavit.

The complaint identifies the Row lineup specifically as the accused product. That includes the original Peloton Row, the Cross Training Row+, and the commercial Row+ Pro, along with any future Peloton rower that uses Form Assist or similar functionality.

Row Form Assist

Why Form Assist is the Target in the Latest Peloton Patent Infringement Lawsuit

The lawsuit centers on Form Assist, the feature Peloton built into the Row to give users real-time feedback on their rowing technique. Sensors in the seat and handlebar track a rower’s position and movement, and the system compares that data against a model of correct form to flag errors like over-compression or leaning too far back at the catch.

According to the complaint, that process matches the patented approach almost exactly: sensors generate movement data, the system builds a model of the user’s body, and it compares that model to stored routine information to detect deviations from proper form. Flow Motion traces its patents back to founder Arie Shavit, who says he came up with the concept in 2010 after watching a Pilates class and noticing how difficult it was for an instructor to track each student’s form and progress in real time.

The complaint also points to Peloton’s Plano, Texas offices and its Legacy West retail store, where Peloton reportedly sells, demonstrates, and supports the Row and Row+ products, as part of its argument for why the case belongs in the Eastern District of Texas.

Peloton’s History With Patent Suits

Peloton has fought off a number of patent claims over the years, including a 2023 suit from Fleet Connect Solutions, a company that has filed similar infringement claims against dozens of other businesses. Several past cases against Peloton ended in settlements or were resolved in the company’s favor.

Flow Motion is not asking the court to block sales of the Row or Row+ Pro. Instead, the complaint seeks monetary damages, a finding that Peloton’s infringement was willful, and attorneys’ fees. The case is still in its earliest stage, with only the complaint and the summons request filed so far.

We’ll keep tracking this Peloton patent infringement lawsuit as it develops, including whether Peloton responds with a motion to dismiss or answers the complaint directly.
