Crystal: Welcome to the Clip Out Podcast, episode 484. This is Crystal O’Keefe.
Tom: And this is Tom O’Keefe. Getting everything-
Crystal: Situated …
Tom: recombobulated. We recorded a… I recorded-
Crystal: I was like, “You recorded?” …
Tom: a episode of Reel Spoilers.
Crystal: We had- Last night. It was all out of order …
Tom: all out of whack, and so I had to, like, hook up the mics different, and it’s a whole, it’s a whole rigamarole.
Crystal: I know.
Tom: Not a fan of rigamaroles.
Crystal: No one really is. I [00:01:00] have never heard anyone say, “I really enjoyed the rigamarole.”
Tom: I would really… I rather… You know what I do enjoy?
Crystal: What?
Tom: A rigamar biscuit.
Crystal: What the hell is that?
Tom: It’s a little fancier than a rigamarole.
Crystal: Oh, okay. Yeah.
Tom: That’s what I enjoy.
Crystal: Okay.
Tom: This is the sort of grade-A banter people tune in for.
Crystal: Welcome.
Tom: Welcome. You can go to our merch store and buy a T-shirt now that says, “Rigamar biscuit.” If you like to wear shirts that literally no one will understand- #
Crystal: wedonthaveastore. We don’t have a store.
Tom: But they’re free. They’re entirely free- … in this store that doesn’t exist. So, uh, anyhoo.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: What, pray tell, do you have in store for people this week?
Crystal: Well, we’re gonna talk about, um, Peloton’s most recent finance- Exploration.
Tom: Ooh.
Crystal: Yeah. Uh, we’re also going to talk about their latest [00:02:00] integration that they have with, uh, with Whoop.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Got some details about that. Also we have all the pricing and we talked about the Tread lineup last week, but we’d neglected to mention the pricing.
Crystal: Yeah. Also, I have a purchasing hack for people.
Tom: Ooh.
Crystal: You’re gonna wanna tune in.
Tom: Ooh.
Crystal: Um, and- A life
Tom: hack from Crystal.
Crystal: Yeah. It’s a good one.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: And then, uh, we are also going to talk about the behind the scenes of the Miley campaign. We have, uh, the… We’re gonna do a little recap of the Times profile that, uh, Peloton, they did of Peter Stern.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: I have thoughts. Mm-hmm. And, um, there’s also just some other business news. I’m not gonna list every single one because it’s a lot this week. And, uh, we have some instructor in the news. There’s some crazy stories this week that we’re gonna talk about.
Tom: There’s a fun Adrian Williams story, and he could use a fun story.
Crystal: He could. He could. And then, uh, we are also [00:03:00] going to be talking about some other connected fitness news.
Tom: Hang on, let me give you the salacious tease- Oh,
Crystal: okay …
Tom: for the Adrian Williams
Crystal: Careful. There’s a lot about Adrian happening right now.
Tom: Adrian Williams and insurance fraud-
Crystal: Nice …
Tom: coming up in instructors in the news.
Crystal: Nice. That’s well played.
Tom: Thank you.
Crystal: Well played. And, uh, the other connected fitness, we’re gonna talk about Equinox and their latest, uh, lawsuit, not to mention what Apple is plotting. And, uh, then we’re going to get to lots of content, the latest classes you need to know about and get ready to take. Both of those will be covered.

Crystal: Hint, we’re all getting old.
Tom: We’re getting old. Just saying. Also, uh, Nico Sarani is returning and where you can see her.
Crystal: Yeah. Also, we got a little bit of her West Coast news too. Yeah. Because she’s living out there now.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: And if you missed episodes, you may not realize that.
Tom: Yeah. Uh, which instructors were spotted at the VMAs?
Crystal: Mm-hmm.
Tom: And science has finally weighed in about how many times a day you should be pooping.
Crystal: Oh, thank God we’ve got an answer to that.
Tom: So we’ve got all the poop news you need-
Crystal: Okay …
Tom: over on the Patreon.

Tom: [00:06:00] So, there’s all that. Let’s dig in, shall we?
Crystal: We shall.
Tom: Peloton is exploring an $800 million bond offering
Crystal: Yes
Tom: I’ve always been a Sean Connery guy.
Crystal: Have you?
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I mean, he’s- I’m
Tom: old school …
Crystal: he’s one of the best Bonds.
Tom: I’m old school.
Crystal: Yeah. I think that’s, I think that’s a nice, a nice Bond.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Yeah. And- That’s not what this has anything to do with, though …
Tom: I will also say George Lazenby, underrated.
Tom: Go on.
Crystal: Who’s George Lazenby?
Tom: The guy who did it, like, once.
Crystal: Oh, I don’t know who he is. Yeah. So I don’t care about him. Um, okay. So what is a bond? It is a loan that investors make to the company.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Okay. Company sells the bond, then they, then the company. So Peloton would sell the bond, then Peloton would get the money up front and then pay interest to bond holders on a set schedule.
Crystal: They would repay the [00:07:00] original amount when the bond matures. Now, a secured bond adds collateral, meaning specific company assets back the debt if the issuer can’t pay.
Tom: So you are gonna get your money back. You are. You are. Come hell or high water, they might have to come to Crystal’s house and take her Rowre- But they-
Tom: but they are gon- they’re gonna- They’re
Crystal: gonna get it …
Tom: they’re gonna hock that bitch- … and they’re gonna give the investors their $800 million back.
Crystal: That’s right.
Tom: One Bike, Row, or Tread at a time.
Crystal: Well, in this case, the, each the, the return, the yield would be 8%, and that is the return that investors would expect for holding the bond.
Crystal: Unlike stock sales, a bond offering does not give investors an ownership stake. So that means that existing shareholders are not diluted, which that’s an important- Right … thing to count- Yeah … to know. So if we kind of back up a little bit here, uh, Peloton has been saying for the last several earnings calls that, like, we know that we have a debt coming due to pay.
Crystal: Mm-hmm. Um, they [00:08:00] had a clause in it that they could not repay it early. Like, if they did, they had a- Right … they had a- There’s a
Tom: penalty
Crystal: or something. Exactly. Yeah. Um, so because of that, they’ve been waiting, holding off to do a refinancing, but now they’re finally ready. The timing is right to do the refinancing, and the big question is, what kind of refinancing do they want to do?
Crystal: Do they wanna do a refinance with a standard bank like they have been? Mm-hmm. So just keep it status quo, or do they- But there’s
Tom: more restrictions-
Crystal: There are more restrictions … on how you
Tom: spend the money-
Crystal: Mm-hmm …
Tom: and probably how you pay it back- That’s
Crystal: right …
Tom: if you, if you do that.
Crystal: That’s right. And, uh, with the bond option, that is another way that they could go about it.
Crystal: But then you have the downside of, well, you know that it, given the terms that they’re saying, you know you’re gonna have $64 million in debt you have to repay every year, whether you have a good year or you don’t have a good year.
Tom: It’s like a mortgage.
Crystal: Right. And that could be a little bit of a gamble for [00:09:00] Peloton- Right
Crystal: given the volatility of life and the world.
Tom: Sure.
Crystal: So, that is, th- those are a couple of the different options. And nothing has been decided. So, the… And really this has nothing to do with the new treadmills. Uh, I know a lot of people have been linking the two.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: But they really have nothing to do with each other because they’ve already spent the money to develop these products, and so that’s, that’s done.
Tom: Right. That’s-
Crystal: Um- …
Tom: sunk cost …
Crystal: right. It is sunk cost. Now the, um, investors shockingly have not been exactly excited about anything that’s happened.
Tom: Gas.
Crystal: I know. So really nothing more to share there.
Tom: And so the, but they haven’t done anything.
Crystal: No, nothing is done. Yeah. These are just, they’re just exploring their options because as they have said for the last several earnings call, like, we have cash on the, the…
Crystal: Like, their cash flow’s great.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: It’s in a much better position than it was. The debt is way down. So because their debt is way down, now they can refinance, [00:10:00] and this is the time for them to do that. However, how they go about refinancing is a question mark, and they’re just trying to explore their options to find out which is the best deal for Peloton.
Crystal: They are s- Which makes the best sense.
Tom: They are still in the Joe Rogan phase.
Crystal: They’re just asking questions. They’re
Tom: just asking questions. These aren’t answers.
Crystal: They’re not answers. They’re
Tom: just questions.
Crystal: So nothing has happened.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: But that’s something, one of the options they’re looking at.
Tom: So this is your chance to, uh, throw some more money at Peloton if you would like to invest today. That’s
Crystal: true. That is true. I think, I think- Well, it’s actually not until they say- Right … y- if they put- It could be … if they officially put it on sale, then you could.
Tom: They’re gonna throw in a guide. You get a free guide.
Tom: For every million dollars you invest.
Crystal: You get a $95
Tom: guide. You get bonds and a guide. You’re welcome.
Crystal: It sounds like a great deal.
Tom: Yeah. Uh, Whoop’s Peloton integration is finally live.
Crystal: I’m so excited about this.
Tom: I bet.
Crystal: Like, it’s really nice. So
Tom: [00:11:00] it- You had a Whoop before they were cool.
Crystal: I’ve had a Whoop since 2018, long before they were cool.
Crystal: And, uh, this is really nice because now when I take a Peloton class, it shows up in my Whoop feed. Mm-hmm. And it even shows the instructor thumbnail. Oh, yeah. Which is not a big deal, but super cute. It’s a
Tom: nice little touch.
Crystal: It is.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And if you take a cycling class, you even get, like, your average power stats and everything in there. Oh, wow. So it’s, it’s really nice to see that all in one place. On the flip side if you take a Whoop activity that has nothing to do with Peloton, it pulls it into the Peloton. So you’re getting… You’re able to see, like, for example, when I take a class on Tonal-
Speaker 6: Mm-hmm
Crystal: I used to do, I used to do just strength s- so I’d get my minutes, but it started taking over my watch, and then my watch couldn’t connect to Tonal, okay? So what that means is that I’d stopped recording my Whoop minutes through Peloton because it was messing up my connection with my watch on Tonal, and I [00:12:00] couldn’t turn the Tonal off and on with my watch anymore.
Speaker 6: Okay.
Crystal: So now Whoop allows me to be able to see what I did on Tonal on Peloton. So I have, in both places, I have a complete library of all the actual activities I did instead of having these gaps in both places- Right. Uh-huh … which is really nice.
Tom: Yeah, for sure.
Crystal: It’s very exciting.
Tom: It doesn’t count if it doesn’t show up in your-
Crystal: I mean, it counts ’cause you did it, but it’s so nice to see.
Crystal: It is. It’s very rewarding because it’s like, if you only… It’s like, if you work out, between all of my things that I do and your walks and… I mean, they’re dog walks, they’re not exactly like- Right … I’m not hitting it hard. Right. Okay. But, you know,
Tom: all the- Unless she sees a rabbit.
Crystal: That’s true. Then we are off.
Crystal: Um, but my point is, is that, you know, I might be, might be getting, like, an hour and a half worth of different modalities- Mm-hmm … and, and then I only see 40 minutes of it. Right. It’s not that big of a deal, but it’s nice. It is. It’s just nice to see it all.
Tom: Yeah. So. So we talked about, uh, the new Tread lineup last week, but we, [00:13:00] uh, we didn’t tell you pricing.
Crystal: We didn’t.
Tom: It’s $1.
Crystal: See, I don’t think that that is correct, actually.
Tom: And you also get one of our free Rigamabiskit T-shirts.
Crystal: Ooh, nice.
Crystal: Okay, so we’ve got the three new treads coming out.
Speaker 6: Okay.
Crystal: The Tread Flex is gonna be $2,195 United States. Okay. It’ll be 20- it’ll be 2,995 Canadian.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: And then the Tread Vision, which is the middle tier-
Tom: Okay …
Crystal: that’s gonna be, uh, 3,495 in the US and 4,395 in Canada. And then, um, we’ve got the Tr- the Tread Vision Plus, which starts at 6,695 in the US, and then it’s gonna be 8,395 in Canada.
Crystal: So that is what you get for your different pricing. However, now I don’t know what’s gonna happen tomorrow, and this may be complete- this, this may age milk- Right … sitting outside, okay? But I’m just going to say [00:14:00] that back when it, the earnings call came out and Peter Stern was going on and on about how there were gonna be new products announced.
Crystal: He said, that there would be significant advantageous pricing for owners who already had Peloton equipment.
Crystal: Okay. Okay, so my question is, will these prices actually apply for people if they’re buying right away and they already have existing Peloton equipment? I don’t know.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: But it sounds like it’s a good thing. Now, that’s not the hack I had for you.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: You’re, like, looking at me like, “That’s not a hack.”
Tom: Well, I
Crystal: don’t know. A hack? “
Tom: That’s a freaking opinion.” That’s just a statement of something that already exists. That’s not a hack at all.
Crystal: Well, I have had multiple people reach out to me about this. But this is going to be a great time for you to find a Peloton store to order from. And here’s the thing.
Crystal: Mm-hmm. You don’t have to live in the same city as the Peloton store.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: But if you did, I have heard They can waive your delivery [00:15:00] fee.
Crystal: That’s a huge deal.
Tom: And you just ask them, and they’re like, “Sure, why not?”
Crystal: Yep. Uh, they are able to do that. And, um, we don’t know what the fees are for these yet, but they have been around 200 to $350- Okay
Crystal: for treads, so that is not insignificant. That’s
Tom: not nothing.
Crystal: It is not. And, uh, don’t forget that there are also your referral codes. And listen, I’m not saying to game the system, I’m just saying that if you already own Peloton equipment-
Tom: Mm-hmm …
Crystal: it is possible for you to consider referring it to yourself.
Crystal: Ooh. And I’ll just leave it at that.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Okay? So…
Tom: And ev- even if it’s not, it’s… I would think it’s possible, like, you probably know other people-
Crystal: Yeah …
Tom: in the world of Pelotonia. Who
Crystal: are gonna be buying this equipment. Yeah. So, you know, work together, people. Yeah. If you can’t work on your own, which I think you can.
Tom: It’s, think of it as a, as [00:16:00] a two for one.
Crystal: There you go.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: There
Tom: you go. Not as a deal, not a buy, it’s not a BOGO.
Crystal: No.
Tom: It’s you, wonder twin power-
Crystal: Right …
Tom: activating.
Crystal: Right.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: So there is all the, the details about that.
Tom: Okay. Uh, the Miley campaign is hitting PSNY.
Crystal: Uh, it is, and a few things happened with it this week.
Crystal: One, uh, it was celebrated in Adweek. They had ads of the week, and Peloton’s made it to ads of the week- Yeah … which is great for Peloton. Yeah. Like, I know that it doesn’t seem like a big deal to the greater y- Right … ecosystem, but it is. Yeah. Because to be celebrated means that it’s getting lots of eyeballs, and that, that is going to help Peloton sell equipment, and that will in turn have Peloton exist longer.
Crystal: Right. And these are all things that we all want. Yes. Like, we’re all on the same page when it comes to that. Uh, Peloton also released a fun little video this week that was the behind the scenes of the Pil- the, the Piley? Of the Miley campaign. Mm-hmm. [00:17:00] And, uh, it all started with a viral video that Miley had done about herself running on a tread, and that’s what started this whole thing off.
Crystal: And, um, and then they kind of went from there. Adrian Williams was in it and talking about how, you know, ’cause he was in the actual video with her, and talking about how she’s such a rock during filming. I don’t really know what that means, though, because I’m just like, well, she should be. Yeah. Because, like, she does this for a living.
Tom: And she’s been doing it since she was, like, 12.
Crystal: Yeah. Yeah. So, like, this should be real easy for her.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: On the flip side, you are running when you’re filming. Yeah. And that’s not exactly easy to do. So anyway, uh-
Tom: But I, you know, I will say to that point-
Crystal: Yeah …
Tom: you know, I bet most of the celebrities that the Peloton instructors tend to interact with Are music artists.
Crystal: Mm-hmm.
Tom: And Miley-
Crystal: Is both …
Tom: is both, right? Mm-hmm. Like, obviously she’s a music artist, but she, her or she originated on television. That’s
Crystal: true.
Tom: And so she really probably [00:18:00] does know how to come in, hit the mark, know how to play to the camera in a way-
Crystal: That not just every person who is a performer- Mm-hmm
Crystal: would necessarily know how to do. Right. Yeah, that’s true. Yeah. That’s a really good point. Yeah. But I thought those were just some, kind of some fun behind-the-scenes of things happening with the campaign.
Tom: Absolutely. So, uh, the Times UK profiled Peloton CEO, Peter Stern.
Crystal: Yeah. So I’m a little… Not a little, I’m annoyed at this article.
Crystal: All right. Okay? Because I was there, and I saw this guy walking around doing his little interviews. He got so much inside access. Yeah. He was there for, like, three days- Right … straight. And he got so much one-on-one attention, and then he writes this article like, “Nah. Nah.” That was, that sums up the article.
Crystal: He’s so blasé.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I’m just so irritated with the whole thing. Maybe you have a [00:19:00] different-
Tom: I didn’t- …
Crystal: sense. You didn’t even read it? I
Tom: didn’t read it.
Crystal: It’s not terrible. It starts off great, ’cause it talks about Robin coming into the room and, like, taking a class, and that most people aren’t gonna have the sensory overload that comes from taking a class in person- Right
Crystal: because they’re gonna be taking it at home. Uh, then he talks about the, uh, the shares and how they plummeted. I mean, that’s fair. That happened. Well, it is happening. Like, it, it happened. You gotta
Tom: report.
Crystal: Yeah. And then he got to talk to Peter Stern, like a one-on-one interview. Mm-hmm. And, um, Peter told me this too, I think he said it to the whole room, that he’s, like, not great on the bike.
Crystal: Like, he feels- Yeah … he is, like, pretty darn good in, on the tread. He holds his own. Mm-hmm. And I think even the row. I don’t remember what he said about the row one way or another. But the bike particularly, he is very embarrassed of how low his numbers are. And for some reason, that made it into the article- Yeah
Crystal: but not in a loving way. Right. Like, it’s in this mocking way about, like, he’s bad on the bike. Can he even [00:20:00] fix this company? Like, it doesn’t quite say that, but it kinda comes across- Yeah … that way to me.
Tom: I mean, I book concerts, but I can’t sing or play an instrument.
Crystal: I ju- I just-
Tom: It’s-
Crystal: Yeah. So, yeah.
Tom: With all due respect I don’t know that I, that I want, I don’t know, Ally Love to be CEO.
Tom: But I’m sure she’s good on the bike.
Crystal: Right. That’s true. Right? Like, that’s- Yeah. They’re, they’re not necessarily-
Tom: They’re radically different
Crystal: skill sets … the same things. Yeah. Yeah. So, and, and then, and then it just talks about the f- falling subscriber numbers and, you know, I feel like at least the way it’s described here in this article is not the same as what was said on the earnings call.
Crystal: So I found that very interesting. Because on the earnings call, they talked about how they had this, like, algorithm that went after people whose payments had declined- Right … and they would get them… They would send follow-ups. They changed that algorithm, and it was longer in between, and so they weren’t getting as many people coming back.
Crystal: And, uh, so now they’ve gone back to the old way. [00:21:00] It’s weird because instead of saying any of that, it says, “Falling subscriber numbers are a function of not chasing new signups at any cost.” “I apply a very simple rule,” Stern says. “We will spend on customer a- acquisition until the last marginal customer is essentially break even.”
Crystal: That’s an interesting, very different story than what was said on the earnings call.
Speaker 6: Yeah.
Crystal: So listen, I don’t know which is true. I’m just telling you. And I guess this guy even got to go to the Peloton board meeting because, um, he said that the arresting declining subscriber numbers is likely to have featured…
Crystal: Oh, no, he didn’t go. Likely to have featured prominently at the Peloton board meeting that met last week. And he said that the executives and non-executives are going to participate in their own spin class, and, uh, that’s when he started talking about how bad he was on the bike. By the way, they did have a class that was all executives and non e- and, like, the high-level people at Peloton, and, uh, that class was taught by Jen [00:22:00] Sherman which I just thought was an interesting choice.
Crystal: Like, a good choice. Right. I don’t, I don’t mean that in a bad way. And then, uh, they all, like, took photos and everything together, and that’s kinda interesting because in addition to all of that, then it was the instructor summit is happening this week. So there’s been a lot of activity. Those, those things all kind of flow together in my mind.
Crystal: Right. Back to this article, though. It’s just a whole lot of really nothing. It just doesn’t… To me, he had a great time, a opportunity to talk about a lot of different things, but he didn’t really get into the new treadmills that much. Yeah. He talked about how John Summit was there and the Miley app option, but, like, that was, it was just very flat.
Crystal: Like, it’s just, it reads so boring.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: It, uh, and I don’t know. Bleh.
Tom: Well, in that case, moving along. Peloton is launching a s- sweat bar at [00:23:00] EatsCon.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: I don’t know what that’s all about, but I don’t like it.
Crystal: I don’t either. There’s too many letters here.
Tom: I had to count them. I was like, “How many E’s are there?”
Tom: And then your eyes just start to glaze over.
Crystal: They do. Yeah. Yeah. So apparently there’s this thing called EatsCon in New York, or should I say EatsCon. There you go. And it’s October 3rd and 4th, um, and it’s at Hudson Rivers, Hudson River Park Pier 76. So it’s all kinds of food. And I, I, I’m pretty sure this is a big deal in New York.
Crystal: I think it is too, yeah. Like- Like, I’ve seen tons- Yeah … of ads for this. But this year for the first time, Peloton is going to be there, and, uh, it, I think that that is interesting as well as the fact that, um, Chase Sapphire is part of this. So I think that is also, um-
Tom: Co-mingled.
Crystal: Co-mingled, that’s exactly right.
Crystal: Yeah. Uh, so you can sign up to do some kind of run or class or something. But here’s the thing this is something you have to go in and set [00:24:00] up your, register for through this. It has nothing… Like, you can’t go to Peloton and ask them in any way, shape, or form. It is a third-party sign up- Gotcha
Crystal: only.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: So keep that in mind. We have the link. We’ll have the link in the-
Tom: In the newsletter
Crystal: That’s it.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: When you send it out.
Tom: Peloton wants to hear from teachers for the upcoming TFA Summit.
Crystal: Yeah, 35th anniversary, which is crazy. Yeah. And uh, they wanna hear from members who are going to be heading to Las Vegas.
Crystal: So this is an great opportunity for you to sign up, tell your teacher story, tell your Peloton story along with that. And uh, you have to send out or send these in prior to when the event opens on October 2nd. Jess Sims and Chelsea Jackson Roberts will both be there, and they will be leading movement sessions, both of them together.
Tom: Awesome, and they, Peloton is the they in that sentence, also, uh, wants to hear from runners for a thing they’re doing for the upcoming New York City Marathon.
Crystal: Yeah, they’re gonna feature [00:25:00] three different runners. And this is really cool because you can get a Peloton spotlight and be a runner, like-
Tom: Yeah
Crystal: I would totally be all over this if- For sure … if, you know. Here’s the thing, though. I know, guys. I know. You can’t sign up. I know. I, I don’t know what’s happening. There’s a form. Mm-hmm. The link works. You go and you fill it all out, but when you hit submit, for some people-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: it’s not working.
Tom: And then for some reason, those people email us as if we’re Peloton.
Crystal: Okay. Well, I do actually know the story behind that one. Oh. Uh, I was messaging with that person last night. They thought… it’s a whole thing. Okay. But yes, we did get a lot of messages yesterday because we posted an article about it.
Crystal: Right. And we were the only one reporting on it. Gotcha. So, so people came to us asking questions. I reached out to our Peloton contact, and they were like, “Well, the link works.” And I was like, “Yes, but the submit button doesn’t.” Mm-hmm. And they were like, “Okay. Are they clicking the terms and condition?” And so I asked a bunch of people, and they all responded with a resounding yes multiple times.
Crystal: Hmm. One even went so far as to download the terms and conditions. It changed nothing. [00:26:00] So I haven’t got an update yet this morning. If I get an update, I will be posting it. But yeah I think that this is one of those situations where it’s working for some people and not others. Yeah. And so Peloton doesn’t even know how to fix it because it’s working.
Crystal: Right. And I know you’ve run across
Tom: this. I deal with this- … w- with, with, when I do ticket giveaways where they’re like, “It’s not work” And a lot of times it’s your privacy settings, or you’re using a VPN, and somehow that… Yeah, and-
Crystal: But I don’t think that’s the case for this because- Right … um, I have talked to so many people.
Crystal: They’ve tried different browsers. Mm-hmm. They’ve tried all the things. Like, all the usual tricks that you can get- Right … it’s, it doesn’t work. Yeah. And so I have no idea how to troubleshoot this one any further. I have reached the limited skill set- … ceiling that I
Tom: have. Have you tried turning the internet off and then turning it back
Crystal: on?
Crystal: I did not suggest that.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: But, uh, you know, you can always try.
Tom: Give it a shot. So, uh, coming up after this, we got instructors in the news. Selena Samuela had some post-triathlon medical complications. We’ll talk about that. And Adrian [00:27:00] Williams and insurance fraud. Will he be going to jail? No, he won’t.
Tom: That’s not a very good tease ’cause I already ruined it. But, uh, we’ll tell you the full story on the other side of this.
Tom: Selena Samuela, After finishing her triathlon, had, uh, had some issues.
Crystal: She did, and I don’t know what exactly happened because she did not share that part- Sure … nor does she need to. Right. But she posted that the day after her triathlon, or it might have even been later that night she experienced some severe pain.
Crystal: Mm-hmm. And she went to the ER, and they told her it was normal and to go home, and she was like, “Something is not right.” And she
Tom: just- She’s like, “I want my copay back.”
Crystal: She just was really like, “This doesn’t feel right.” So she called the… I think it was the Mayo Clinic. Mm. And she called them, which is where something had happened, like that’s where she had a doctor affiliate.
Crystal: I was
Tom: like, “
Crystal: [00:28:00] Whoa!” She wasn’t just like, “I am Selena Samuela.”
Tom: Like she just-
Crystal: I didn’t mean it like that. She wasn’t-
Tom: That was like, boy, I’ve heard of asking for the manager. And I’m like, “This ER sucks.” “I’m calling Dr. Albert Schweitzer.”
Crystal: I believe that is where, that her babies were born or cared for. Gotcha.
Crystal: Yeah. Like, I don’t know if that was the prenatal care. I’m not exactly sure.
Tom: Yeah. She’s… There is a preexisting relationship- Yes … with the Mayo Clinic. Yeah.
Crystal: Yes. So she calls them. Yeah. She tells them what’s happening, and they were like, “Get in here now.” They ended up having to do surgery.
Tom: Whoa.
Crystal: Yeah. And again, she didn’t explain what it was.
Crystal: She’s fine now. Yeah. She’s recovering. But her post was all about like advocate for your freaking self. Right. Like if it doesn’t feel right, don’t listen just because somebody’s like, “You’re fine.” Yeah. Like if it doesn’t feel right, listen to your own body. Yeah. And she did, and thank God she did.
Tom: For sure.
Crystal: That’s really scary. That is. Because your internal organs are all very gentle. Like, they are very vulnerable after something like that, and she ran a… She did a triathlon. Right. Like, maybe her body was not happy. Yeah. So I’m just glad she’s okay.
Tom: I know mine [00:29:00] wouldn’t be.
Crystal: For very different reasons.
Tom: So, uh, Adrian Williams makes the local news in New Jersey in relation to insurance fraud.
Tom: This story has nothing to do with Peloton- At all. … other than Adrian Williams for some reason pops up in it. But it, it’s a funny story in that I guess-
Crystal: This is in Edgewater, New Jersey. For people who are local, they may want to know-
Tom: Okay …
Crystal: where this is.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And- But they had that big storm this past weekend.
Tom: Right. They had the big giant storm and, uh- … and there was an area that I guess is notorious for floodwaters coming in, and there was a car stranded there that got damaged in the floodwaters. And but like overnight, like more people had pushed their cars into the floodwater so they could make insurance claims.
Tom: Yeah. And so, and, and ultimately this has nothing to do with Adrian Williams other than they’re doing like man on the street interviews- … and Adrian-
Crystal: And he just pops up …
Tom: Adrian just happens to be strolling by, so he’s the man on [00:30:00] the street- Yeah … in this, in this news segment.
Crystal: And one of our listeners, uh, Gail Fine, longtime listener- Yeah
Crystal: she was like, uh, she’s like, “Oh, I didn’t know he lived in my city.”
Crystal: And, uh, she was saying it makes sense though because of where it’s- located, like it’s super close to the city. Yeah. Uh, and you can see the city from where they live. Ah. And so I think she’s li- she is hypothesizing that perhaps a lot of Peloton instructors might live in that area- Gotcha
Crystal: because it’s so convenient- Right … wise, you know. I have no idea, but I thought it was a good hypothesis. Regardless, it’s a fun story, and it’s really cute ’cause he’s just like, “Hi, guys.”
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And he’s got Frankie with him. Yeah. His little doggy.
Tom: And he’s just like, “Yeah, people be crazy.” Yeah. And is, I like, I’m like, do, did the reporter, you think he had any idea who he was talking to?
Tom: I don’t think- ‘Cause they never, I d- they say Adrian- It,
Crystal: it
Tom: said nothing about Peloton … it says his name, but it doesn’t say anything about Peloton.
Crystal: No. Yeah. This would’ve never come up had it not been from, for one of our listeners spotting it because it in no way- Bas- … had anything to do with Peloton.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: So it was just [00:31:00] a cute little aside.
Tom: All the lost SEO-
Crystal: Yeah. …
Tom: for that poor news station.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Reminds me of a, after I think it was the LA fires, they were interviewing somebody, like man on the street style, who had been helping people, like, get out of their houses or whatever. And and it was Steve Guttenberg.
Tom: But whoever was interviewing them- Had
Crystal: no idea …
Tom: had no idea who Steve Guttenberg was. So they’re just, like, interview on screen, says Steve Guttenberg. But it doesn’t say, like, actor or, you know, star of Police Academy- That’s so funny … and Three Men and a Baby, right? Like, it’s just like, he’s, and he’s just giving the interview straight, just like, “Yeah, well, you’re asking me stuff, I’ll answer it just like a regular person.”
Tom: You know, it was, it was just very reminiscent. Tunde, Camilla Ramone, and Rad Lopez are heading to Fitness Miami.
Crystal: They are, October 25th. But I also have to say they are also going to be featuring Johanna Ricus.
Crystal: Oh, okay. Sorry. She will be there as well. And, uh, that is coming up soon, so if you haven’t gotten your tickets, they’re still available, [00:32:00] and you should do that. So check it out.
Tom: Ally Love returning to PSL.
Crystal: She’s gonna be back for a 30-minute UK Black History Month dance music ride on October 23rd, and that’ll be 2:00 PM Eastern. The booking is going to open today, so I mean, we have an article out.
Crystal: We- people do not need to rely on this podcast- Right … to know that. Um, so that will be an option for you.
Tom: Lots of news about Whoop lately.
Crystal: Yeah, they’re all coming after Whoop now.
Tom: And now Apple has set its sights on knocking Whoop down a notch.
Crystal: They have. They are coming out with a screenless device. This just kills me. Mm-hmm. This is so funny.
Crystal: I just remember how much shit Whoop got for h- not having a screen. Yeah. I can’t tell you how many articles, how many different things that Will Ahmed had to put out about the point of not having a screen.
Tom: [00:33:00] Right.
Crystal: This had to be said so many times, and now everybody wants a freaking screenless device.
Crystal: Right. And it’s not even about not having a screen. It actually is about that you wear it all the time. Yeah. Because when you have an Apple Watch, you tend to either wear it all day and charge it at night, which is… a lot of people do. Mm-hmm. Or you will wear it and then have m- maybe at night, but then you’ll have, like, a time period during the day where you charge it, because it can’t hold a charge.
Crystal: Right. Whoop is much better than that because you can wear it all the time. Why does that matter? Because the data from your body still happens at night. Yeah. And it’s vastly different than what is happening during the day, and all these other companies are using the algorithm to fill in the blanks.
Crystal: Right. They’re using algorithms to say, “Well, it was like this during the day, so it’s probably like this at night.”
Tom: Well, yeah. It seems to make sense, right?
Crystal: But Whoop is actually pulling your actual data. Right. And-
Tom: Because your body is still [00:34:00] bodying.
Crystal: Exactly. And so I feel like that is why I like Whoop, because I feel like it tracks my sleep really well, and I feel like it tracks my h- my heart rate variability.
Crystal: Also, every algorithm is different when it comes to heart rate variability, so Sometimes they will, the algorithms of companies will be like, “Well, we’ll take your heart rate variability every 10 minutes or every hour- Mm … and then put all that into a big calculation, and the average is your heart rate variability,” right?
Crystal: But your, the best time i- according to studies-
Tom: Mm-hmm …
Crystal: I don’t know what studies. You have to- Yeah … go look it up. But accor-
Tom: Joe’s studies.
Crystal: According to the studies the best time to test your heart rate variability is actually first thing in the morning as you’re waking up, and that’s why that wake time is so important.
Speaker 6: Yeah.
Crystal: And I have worn Garmin. I have worn Apple. I have not worn Oura, but I’ve heard people say similar things. They’re- they will track from the second you get into bed and call that sleep, [00:35:00] not from the moment you go to sleep. And Whoop actually can tell when your body settles-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: and it does that. It tracks that as sleep.
Crystal: So for me, that’s the difference. I know I just went on a whole tangent about how awesome Whoop is.
Tom: Use promo code TCO at checkout.
Crystal: I wish. It
Tom: won’t work,
Crystal: but- It won’t work, yeah … it’d
Tom: be, wouldn’t that be fun?
Crystal: I do have a referral link, though. Ooh. And I do get free months for it. Yeah. So if anybody wants a Whoop- Sure
Crystal: like please contact me. Anyway, though, so now Apple is trying to do that. These other companies are all trying to come after Whoop because they have finally reached the point where there is attention being paid to it.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: By the way, just a little side note.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Last week, I know I’m t- I’m pulling a, a U-turn here.
Crystal: Oh. Last week we reported that Oura was getting ready to do their IPO.
Tom: Mm-hmm.
Crystal: They canceled the IPO- Ooh … because of market uncertainty.
Tom: Ooh.
Crystal: Which they should. Yeah. I even said that at the time. You did. This is not a good time. You’re
Tom: basically a financial advisor.
Crystal: I am a tech bro-ette.
Tom: Yes.
Crystal: Except nice.
Tom: We call them tech gals.
Crystal: Tech [00:36:00] gals.
Tom: Tech dames. Lady techs.
Crystal: Lady… Oh my God.
Tom: Equinox-
Crystal: Yes …
Tom: not having a good day. Being sued by, uh, one of their Black instructors, which is pertinent to the story.
Crystal: It is. Yeah. Yeah. So, they’re, the Equinox worker is saying that Equinox mixed up, they confused Black fitness instructors. That’s terrible.
Tom: That’s, yeah.
Crystal: I, I-
Tom: And, and then I guess they’re claiming that when they then pointed that out, they were like, “We no longer need your services.”
Crystal: That’s crazy. Yeah. And they also failed to provide skin tone appropriate lighting for promotional images. That’s, that is Just, it just complete- I-
Tom: Yeah,
Crystal: like
Tom: that-
Crystal: It’s, all of it’s terrible.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: But, like, if you’re gonna have people, and you should, have people of all different ethnicities- Right … then you should have appropriate- You should, you should know … lighting and makeup for [00:37:00] all different light, for all different- Right … skin tones and ethnicities. Yes. Because we are just a bunch of mutts, myself included.
Crystal: Yeah. And, you know, I happen to be a really pale person. I obviously need a very different lighting composition- Right … than somebody who has a dark skin tone.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: Like, obviously.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: You just, you just-
Tom: This is not new information. No. This, I mean, this I’m surprised that they would hire professionals that didn’t already know and take that into account.
Tom: Like-
Crystal: I… and to be so dismissive. Yeah. In this world, to be dismissive of people in general, and then literally dismiss them- Right … literally-
Tom: Yes …
Crystal: from their job is- From
Tom: their employment, yeah …
Crystal: crazy bonkers.
Tom: Yeah. So if it’s true. If it’s true. Allegedly. Allegedly. We’re putting that asterisk on it so we don’t get sued, not that they’re listening, but you never know.
Tom: But, uh, but-
Crystal: There’s lots of people that hate us. They could send them this- That’s true … and just to get
Tom: them- Tipping them off.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Yeah. Hello, hate listener. That one’s for you. You know what else is for [00:38:00] you? Right after this content, we’re gonna talk all the classes that, uh, you should be considering, ’cause there are so many, and, uh, we’re gonna tell you every single one of them right after this.
Tom: it is time for the TCO Top Five. You have told us your favorite classes, and then we tell them back to you. Number one, your favorite structured ride.
Crystal: Yes. Hannah Frankson’s new structure of One Three Five ride.
Crystal: It’s a 30-minute class, and, uh, people are loving it. Mm-hmm. Uh, so Jenny Marie Graham Bane said, “Gotta say, Hannah Frankson’s new One Three Five ride was everything I didn’t know I needed. You’ve got one endurance interval block, three middle distant inter- intervals for next, and then polish it off with five cheeky sprints at the end.”
Crystal: Yeah. She said, “Professor Wilpers called it the kitchen sink. It’s got something for everyone.”
Tom: Uh, number two, your favorite [00:39:00] themed HIIT.
Crystal: Yes. Uh, so this was a 30-minute HIIT class taught by Emma Lovewell in London on November… November? September- There you go … 27th. And this is, uh, submitted by Daisy Mac Mac.
Crystal: Daisy Mac says, “Emma went to London. After Sunday’s HIIT class, they swiftly put her back on that plane and relinquished her passport.” “But seriously, eight 60-second efforts, and that’s just a preview, all very fast as if we were chasing the Tube.”
Tom: Uh, number three, your favorite singalong.
Crystal: Well, Benny Adami is winning hearts every- Mm
Crystal: every time he does one of these, every class he has with all of his amazing energy. This was a 30-minute dine concert. I’m trying to be fancy.
Tom: Ah.
Crystal: But, uh, it’s a singalong ride.
Tom: That explains the monocle
Crystal: And, uh, this was submitted by Kevin Ramsey. He says, “My favorite class has to be Benny Adami Peloton Abby S- Abba Sing Along Ride on [00:40:00] Saturday.
Crystal: I was fortunate to do this live in studio. It was so much fun. Benny was on fire, and so was the studio. You do not have to know German for this one. Hop on and sing along to a great playlist.”
Tom: Uh, number four, your favorite yin yoga.
Crystal: Greta Dopp is up. She taught this 30-minute yin yoga on September 13th, and Christine Hebert Texiera, uh, s- nominated this, and she said, “Honestly, I had a bit of a tough week, so I will say per usual my favorite class was the most recent yin yoga class with Greta.
Crystal: One thing that stayed with me she mentioned throughout the class, for every beginning there is an ending. Yin is perfect for me. I really sink into the posture and it truly calms me.” And, uh, Christine, I hope you’re having a better week.
Crystal: I’m sorry that you had a bad one.
Tom: And finally, number five, your unstackable it’s a long run.
Crystal: Alex K taught this class, 75-minute outdoor run club. So they recently changed up the run club so that they’re gonna have, like, [00:41:00] several run clubs, differing lengths for differing goals- Mm-hmm
Crystal: throughout the month. And, uh, this was the 75-minute one. And Jennifer L- Lynn Jones said that she loved this class, “Lots of great conversation, and he themed the class with songs titled from each state in alphabetical order, hoping the next class finishes off the remaining states. I love a theme to pass the time.”
Crystal: Alex is so good at this. Yeah. He does such an amazing job, and it makes the time fly when he does this. It really d- ’cause you’re thinking about what he’s saying. Your brain is so focused on that, your body’s just doing what it does. Yeah. So it’s great.
Tom: Moving into other classes, the October Artist Serieses have been revealed.
Crystal: We have. Well, we knew Miley was coming.
Tom: Well, yeah.
Crystal: Uh, but we also have Harry Styles.
Tom: Heard of him.
Crystal: And Skepta.
Tom: Not heard of him or her or them.
Crystal: That’s okay.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: You don’t need to [00:42:00] know.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Just, uh, just enjoy.
Tom: Uh, live PSNY Halloween classes have been announced. People always love the Halloween classes.
Crystal: They do.
Crystal: And, um, we have a few that are listed. Like, we know that there’s going to be one with Ally that’s gonna be a ride. Jess King is gonna have a ride. They’re… October 29th is when they start. There’s gonna be a Power Zone endurance on Halloween proper. Mm-hmm. And, uh, then Hannah is also teasing something special for Halloween while she’s in New York City for the marathon.
Crystal: That’s Hannah Frankson, by the way. There… So this is just a very limited peek because they always put out a lot more classes than this. Yeah. So this is just a few that we’re seeing. A little
Tom: glimpse.
Crystal: More to come. Yes.
Tom: An appetizer, if you will.
Crystal: Yeah.
Crystal: The other thing everybody needs to know Brittany Allen has announced that she is not gonna have a Halloween collection this year.
Crystal: So, um, she is saying that the fabric that was $6.80 a yard is now over $15- Woof … a yard.
Tom: [00:43:00] Must be Canadian.
Crystal: And customers are spending more carefully. She is going to do a December holiday collections, but the reason I’m telling you this, especially in relation to the Halloween-
Tom: Mm-hmm
Crystal: classes, is keep in mind Brittany Allen does all of their Halloween costumes, so we’re probably going to see fewer- Oh … Halloween costumes from- You don’t
Tom: think she’ll do one just for the-
Crystal: Maybe. Maybe. Yeah. But it’s like that, that, that’s a lot of instructors to do- For sure … to do those for. Yeah. And I don’t know how their agreement works.
Crystal: You know? Yeah. So I don’t know.
Tom: Interesting.
Crystal: So we’ll see.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: But just be aware, that could happen.
Tom: Hannah Frankson, uh, everybody gets excited about hip hop, but we really love hip hop eve with- … the anticipation, waiting for hip hop morning.
Crystal: No.
Tom: And we come down the stairs-
Crystal: No
Tom: and, uh, Snoop Dogg’s under the tree.
Crystal: So this is actually an artist called Eve.
Tom: Oh.
Crystal: Oh. And, uh, she is actually going to be in… Well, okay, so she was in the class with Eve. Right. Like, it dropped. She like- Oh … did a [00:44:00] live, like she was in the studio with Hannah Frankson.
Tom: That makes more sense.
Crystal: Yeah. And, uh, I thought it was kind of a fun callback.
Crystal: Uh, I only know from Elizabeth ’cause she made a point to take that she was really excited about it, but I thought this was fun. Skepta is one of the songs played in there, which is one of the artist series coming later this month. Ah. So that’s a lot of fun. Apparently Hannah interviewed Eve throughout, and they talked about the rise of her career.
Crystal: So that’s a, a, that will be a very fun class- Yeah … for people to take. A- Nice surprise …
Tom: absolutely. Some Latinx Hispanic Heritage Month classes for you. Rad Lopez and Camila Ramon have a two-for-one, right?
Crystal: Yes, and, uh, and then Robin also had a Daddy Yankee strength class that she did as well. So those are just two that we are highlighting.
Crystal: There are many more that you need to check out, including some Spotify-specific classes. Um, there’s a l- uh, Johanna has a 20-minute Latin [00:45:00] heritage Spotify Viva Latino Pilates coming. Mm. Um, that’s on Friday 10/2- Okay … dropping.
Tom: And even more Hannah Frankson, her and Germaine Johnson will be celebrating UK Black History Month.
Crystal: Yes. They’re gonna be celebrating it together and doing a two-for-one. They have done this a couple, I think three years in a row. I think this is their third year in a row. Gotcha. And this year it will be strength. Yeah. And Hannah Frankson’s first time teaching strength, we think.
Tom: Ah,
Crystal: okay. So that’s fun.
Tom: Kirsten Ferguson has a Welcome to the Party walk-run for you.
Crystal: Yeah. Did you understand what’s happening here?
Tom: No,
Crystal: not at all. I didn’t think so because you were very quick to be like, “This is too much.” This is a big deal because this, uh, this is the name of a podcast, and these podcast- Dang … ladies are huge sports, like, freaking legends. Okay. And they came and did the class with- Ah
Crystal: Kirsten, and they interviewed Kirsten, but they also talked about their own lives as well. Gotcha. So it’s a really cool [00:46:00] conversation. Definitely a don’t-miss class.
Tom: Uh, Matt Wilpers and Christian Vanderveldt have a new class planned.
Crystal: They do, October 24th, I believe. Do not miss that class.
Tom: And there’s also more, uh, what’s that scenic thing that he does coming?
Crystal: Real routes.
Tom: There we go.
Crystal: Yeah, we don’t know the location yet, but there is going to be another one in October.
Tom: Okay. Uh, PSL Outdoor Run Club has something special planned for World Mental Health Day.
Crystal: Jeffrey McEachern is gonna be… I say his name differently every time.
Tom: I, me too.
Crystal: He is-
Tom: I like to say Joffrey.
Crystal: Joffrey. He’s so cute. Uh, he is going to be doing outdoor run club this month, and, uh, you can still book that. It’s going to be Wednesday well, actually, wait, that’s today.
Tom: Oh.
Crystal: So it’s still open.
Crystal: Go book it. I mean, nobody’ll hear this before- Yeah, it’ll,
Tom: it’ll be Friday when they hear this,
Crystal: so. God, I hope people do. Now I’m all bummed.
Tom: And then a quick look at this week at Peloton
Crystal: There were just a couple of highlights- Yeah … I wanted to make sure we said here. First of all, there [00:47:00] is a new Set the Pace, so that’s the New York Road Runners podcast- Mm-hmm … that Bex Gentry co-hosts. And, um, it is going to be featuring Mary Cain, who is also a legend, so you definitely wanna check that out.
Crystal: Um, there’s also going to be a 75-minute Hyrox simulation boot camp that is gonna be taught by Robin and Hyrox champ Meg Jacoby, that is gonna be dropping on 10/1. Not to mention, we have more bench strength dropping this week. So there are some really big classes you do not wanna miss.
Tom: Awesome.
Tom: Only one birthday this week, uh, Nico Surani, who will be-
Crystal: Happy birthday …
Tom: who will be on the West Coast.
Crystal: Yes.
Tom: Yeah. Uh, celebrating her birthday on October 3rd, so happy birthday.
Crystal: Happy birthday.
Tom: So that brings this episode to a close. Until next week, where can people find you?
