Emma Lovewell 80s Ride Delivers MTV 45th Anniversary Fun

A surprise guest, an iconic playlist, and a nod to the network that changed music forever

The Emma Lovewell 80s Ride landed on Peloton’s schedule Saturday, August 1, timed to MTV’s 45th anniversary. Lovewell built the 30-minute cycling class around a playlist pulled from the channel’s earliest music video rotation, and she brought a surprise guest into the studio for the occasion: her father.

Lovewell teased the connection on Instagram ahead of the 12:30 p.m. ET class, noting that Saturday marked MTV’s 45th anniversary and that the playlist would carry a hint of that history. The network first went on air on August 1, 1981, and its earliest broadcasts helped launch the careers of several artists who ended up on Lovewell’s set list. She called the class “a fun one” while previewing it, and the connection to Music Television’s legacy gave the ride a clear hook beyond a typical themed playlist. That homework paid off. The Emma Lovewell 80s Ride ended up leaning on deep cuts alongside the marquee hits, rather than just the most obvious 80s staples.

The soundtrack leaned into the channel’s video-era peak. Riders pedaled to Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer,” The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star,” Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” and a-ha’s “Take On Me.” The set continued with Van Halen’s “Jump,” Madonna’s “Like a Prayer,” Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” and The Police’s “Every Breath You Take,” pairing eight of the era’s most recognizable tracks with Lovewell’s usual climb and interval structure.

Emma Lovewell’s Dad Joins the Studio Ride

Lovewell shared that her father wanted to take the Emma Lovewell 80s Ride in person, showing up ready to ride in a button-down shirt and Carhartts before the team got him properly outfitted for the bike. During one out-of-saddle segment, Lovewell called down to her dad and told him to remain in the saddle instead of following the rest of the class up. “I’m just looking out for you,” she said, turning the moment into a lighthearted aside without breaking the pace of the ride. She introduced him on Instagram with a “special guest alert,” and the in-studio cameo added a personal touch to an already high-energy class.

It is a rare look at Lovewell’s family joining her at Peloton Studios rather than watching from home.

The pairing of a milestone anniversary with a hands-on family moment fits a pattern Lovewell has leaned into this year, following her Christmas in July Ride, which similarly built a themed playlist around a specific date on the calendar. Both classes show Lovewell using her DJ background to turn a calendar milestone into a full ride concept rather than a simple genre playlist. The Emma Lovewell 80s Ride follows that same approach, translating a single date on the calendar into a class built entirely around it.

For members who missed the live class, the Emma Lovewell 80s Ride remains available on demand, giving riders a chance to pedal through eight decades-defining tracks while marking a network anniversary that reshaped how music reached fans in the first place.
