Racing under bib No. 757, Selena completed the race at Rye Playland, the Westchester County venue that has hosted the Toughman Triathlon since the 1980s. The event is USA Triathlon-sanctioned and serves as a qualifier for USAT Age Group Nationals, drawing a capped field of athletes across the swim-bike-run format, with conditions on Sunday adding an extra layer of difficulty.

Selena posted her final standing from the Toughman Triathlon on Instagram, showing a time of 2:34:20, good for sixth among the day’s female finishers. In a story shared after the race, she wrote that she came in first for her age group and sixth overall for women, adding that she was “not mad at it.” A separate post showed her drenched from the weather, and she noted she had no frame of reference for how difficult the course was since it was her first triathlon, but that the hills on the bike leg in the rain were “scary af.” Steady rain throughout the morning turned the bike course into a genuine test, and Selena’s result held up against conditions that slowed the field overall.

About the Toughman Triathlon

The Toughman Triathlon traces back to the 1990s, when it grew out of the original USTS series and became one of the longest-running triathlons in the country before a hiatus and eventual relaunch. It remains a fixture on the Northeast endurance calendar, pairing an Olympic-distance triathlon with duathlon, aquabike, and relay options so athletes of different backgrounds can take part. The Toughman Triathlon event also supports local charities tied to Rye Playland and the surrounding community, giving it a reputation beyond just the results sheet.

Nerves Before the Start

Selena’s apprehension was evident a day earlier, when she shared a video from packet pickup. She described the volunteers as informative and supportive, and said the event had the feel of a tight-knit community. But she was candid about what worried her. Unlike the marathons and long-distance runs she has completed before, she explained, triathlon means managing transitions between three disciplines rather than settling into one pace and one fuel plan, and figuring that out in real time added a layer of uncertainty she hadn’t faced in a running race. She also admitted a more personal fear: finishing last, and not knowing what that would feel like. That kind of candor has become a hallmark of how she talks to her Peloton community about training, race day, and everything in between.

Who Is Selena Samuela?

Selena joined Peloton as an instructor in 2018 and teaches across Tread running, strength, bootcamp, and boxing-inspired formats. She built her following on high-energy coaching paired with practical training advice, and members have followed her fitness journey closely, including her first marathon finish and, more recently, her decision to postpone an Ironman race in 2023 to prioritize recovery. She welcomed twin daughters, Stella and Frankie, in December 2025, and returned to the live Peloton schedule this spring, teaching walks, hikes, and strength content before working back toward running.

A Comeback Built Over Months

Selena’s Toughman Triathlon finish adds another marker to a comeback that has played out largely in public. Selena has used Instagram to document her training since returning to teaching, sharing workouts, recovery days, and the occasional hard session with her Peloton audience along the way, giving members a real-time look at what rebuilding endurance after twins actually looks like. Members have loved her candor and honesty – meeting a goal like completing the Toughman Triathlon less than a year after delivering twins has been very challenging. However, it keeps her on pace for the goal she’s stated for herself: completing an Ironman by the end of 2026. A first-place age-group finish on debut, in rain that made the course harder for everyone, suggests that timeline is still very much on track.

Congratulations Selena!
