Peloton Programs and Split Programs: Understanding the Key Differences

Peloton Programs vs Split Programs: Navigating the Options

Programs, Collections, Splits—it can be confusing to figure out what these terms mean in the Peloton world, especially if you’re new to the platform and deciding which option to take can feel overwhelming. Previously, we broke down the differences between Programs and Collections. Now, we’re diving into the differences between Peloton Programs and Split Programs, which can be tricky since both fall under the “Programs” category.

What’s the Difference Between a Program and a Split Program?

Both Programs and Split Programs are part of Peloton’s broader Programs offering, and are found under the same tab. However, the key distinctions lie in their structure, duration, and flexibility:

Peloton Programs

  • Typically feature more than 7 classes and last multiple weeks*.
  • Require you to follow a predetermined timeline set by Peloton.
  • Classes must be completed sequentially, and a new week unlocks 7 days after the previous week starts.
  • No pause option—if you can’t complete the program on schedule, you’ll need to restart from the beginning.
  • Covers the full array of what Peloton has to offer.
  • Example: Push Your Pace or Arms with Tunde.

Note: There are Peloton Programs that include 7 or fewer classes over one week that are not considered Splits, such as Set the Barre.

Peloton Split Programs

  • Contain fewer than 7 classes and are designed to last one week.
  • Once completed, the Split remains unlocked, allowing you to revisit the classes at your convenience.
  • The program ends after one week, but for maximum benefit, it’s recommended to repeat the classes 4–6 times over several weeks.
  • Typically focuses on strength, but can incorporate cardio.
  • Example: Rebecca Kennedy’s Intermediate 5 Day Split or Katie Wang’s 4 Day Split + Row.

While Split Programs involve repeating the same classes for several weeks, they are a highly effective training method, especially for building strength.

Why Is Split Training Important?

Split training is a time-tested and science-backed strength-training method where workouts are divided by muscle group or body part. This allows for:

  • Targeted muscle focus with higher intensity per session.
  • Adequate recovery time for each muscle group.
  • Increased muscle mass, calorie burn, and muscle shaping.
  • The ability to train around injuries or weak areas.

Split training often involves repeating exercises weekly, which helps track progress and build consistency. However, it’s essential to incorporate progressive overload (increasing weight over time) to avoid plateaus.

Note: Split training is best suited for intermediate or advanced fitness levels. Proper form and technique are crucial for safety and effectiveness.

How to Choose the Right Option for You

Choosing between a Peloton Program and a Split Program depends on your schedule and fitness goals. If you have a consistent daily routine with ample time for structured workouts, a Program may be the right fit. However, if your schedule requires more flexibility, a Split Program allows you to revisit classes at your own pace. Regardless of your choice, prioritizing your health and fitness is always a win, and both options offer valuable benefits to help you grow stronger and achieve your goals.
