Transcript:
Crystal: Welcome to the Clip Out Podcast, episode 483. This is Crystal O’Keefe.
Tom: And this is Tom O’Keefe.
Crystal: Hi.
Tom: Hi.
Crystal: You got your recording going over there.
Tom: Fighting the clock again.
Crystal: I see it.
Tom: Yeah, story of my life. Story of all of our lives- It
Crystal: really is …
Tom: in a way.
Crystal: Kinda.
Tom: If you think about it.
Crystal: It’s true.
Tom: We’re all fighting the clock.
Crystal: I mean- Yeah … just let the clock happen.
Tom: That’s-
Crystal: Here’s the thing, we don’t have control. It could all be over tomorrow.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I, I learned that very young. Yeah. I learned that very, very young.
Tom: Yeah, yeah. So, [00:01:00] speaking of it could all be over tomorrow-
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Where are we going? Let’s talk, let’s talk about the turtle.
Crystal: Oh, yeah.
Tom: We’ve got a turtle update.
Crystal: We do have a turtle update.
Tom: So we are releasing our own, uh, brand of turtle soup. I
Crystal: thought this was gonna be for the bonus. That’s awful.
Tom: Use promo code TCO at checkout.
Crystal: Gross. I thought we were gonna do this on the bonus. We’re doing this on the main-
Tom: Well, we talked about this in the main.
Crystal: Did we?
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I thought we only talked about it on the
Tom: bonus. No, we talked about it on the main episode, so I figured that we should give them an update here- Okay,
Crystal: okay …
Tom: which is, uh, it seems like the turtle is going to be okay.
Crystal: The turtle is gonna be okay. Yes. He had, uh, they called it spinal volume showing.
Tom: Mm-hmm.
Crystal: Um, but since he could still, uh, retract his little legs-
Tom: Right …
Crystal: then it was okay.
Tom: He’s okay. His legs are perfectly normal size for a turtle. Don’t you leg shame
Crystal: Donatello. Donatello. I didn’t realize you had named him. And we don’t know his gender, Tom.
Tom: Well, you had a one in four chance of getting it right.
Crystal: Okay.
Tom: There’s only four possible names for a turtle.
Crystal: I do feel [00:02:00] very, very good about having done one tiny li- well, bright light of a good thing in this world. Yes. Like there’s so much flipping dark. It made me feel good to do just a tiny s- We saved a
Tom: turtle.
Crystal: We saved a turtle.
Tom: Yes. And before people at me, there are i- there are five possible names.
Crystal: Oh. ‘
Tom: Cause of Yurtle.
Crystal: Oh, that’s true. So, yeah. That’s true. So I
Tom: just wanted to put that out there.
Crystal: Is Yurtle a boy or a girl?
Tom: I don’t know.
Crystal: Okay. I, I’m just wondering why all turtles are boys, that’s all. Oh. It’s just a question. Oh. Why all turtles- Well- … in cartoons are boys. I
Tom: was like the fact that we have, continue to have turtles would lead me to believe that they’re not all boys.
Crystal: I meant in cartoon land.
Tom: Oh, in cartoon land.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Probably ’cause most of the voice actors were guys, so they were just like, “Hey Mel Blanc, get in there and read another one.” He was already on the clock. So, uh, it is a big week in the world of Peloton. What, pray tell, do you have in store for people? Yeah,
Crystal: there’s really not a lot going on.
Crystal: Just, [00:03:00] uh, just, you know, all of the brand new treads that launched. If you wanna hear about my in-person experience in depth- Mm-hmm … we have a whole bonus episode about it. It’s a bonus bonus. A
Tom: Bonus.
Crystal: But we have, we will do a overview of what the new treads include and what they don’t include.
Crystal: We also have, uh, the brand new sa- self-paced custom workouts that just rolled out.
Tom: Mm-hmm.
Crystal: Not to mention the Peloton commercial, the brand new treads, the, well, the whole lineup, all released yesterday too. It’s been a big week.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: More Microstores on the way. We’re gonna talk about that and why the timing is so important.
Crystal: Uh, there’s also an update on the hackathon, the 2026, and we have the winner of this year. What Peloton did to the educator discount, how it has expanded.
Tom: Mm-hmm.
Crystal: We also have details of the New York City Marathon events that Peloton will be participating in. They are, uh, we also have the latest marathon besides New York City- Oh
Crystal: that [00:04:00] Peloton will be participating in.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: We have amazing instructor news- Mm … that I am so excited about. Um, we are gonna be talking about that, not to mention- We have other connected fitness news.
Tom: There’s a lot this week.
Crystal: There is. Yeah. There, there is. Yeah. It’s all over the place, too. Yeah. There’s lawsuits, there’s layoffs, there’s IPOs.
Crystal: Like, it’s, it is ginormously- Running
Tom: the gamut.
Crystal: It is. It is gamut crazy. And then, of course, we have our content, so we’re gonna tell you the TCO top five, and of course, we’re gonna tell you the tri results, because we had the, uh, triathlon- Mm-hmm … last weekend.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And then brand-new classes are dropping.
Crystal: Oh. Brand new. There’s a few different kinds of new classes, so we’re gonna talk about all of that as well.
Tom: Awesome. Well, before we get to all that, shameless plugs. Don’t forget we’re available on Apple Podcast, Spotify, iHeart, TuneIn, wherever. I forgot- I
Crystal: know …
Tom: where all the places were. I
Crystal: know. You were like, “Uh…”
Tom: I was like, “The Zune store?” “MySpace? Friendster? Where do they keep these things
Crystal: at?” They’re still on [00:05:00] Napster.
Tom: Yes. Kazaa? BitTorrent. Uh-
Crystal: Let’s, let’s just pull up Ask Jeeves and find out.
Tom: Yes. Typing this into Hotbox as we speak. I
Crystal: think Hotbox is a very different thing.
Tom: So, uh, while you’re there, be sure and follow us so you n- never miss an episode.
Tom: Maybe leave us a review. It’s super helpful, and greatly appreciated. You can also find us on Facebook, facebook.com/theclipout. While you’re there, like the page, join the group. If you would like to support us with more than your ears, you may do so at patreon.com/theclipout. Mm-hmm. Over there, you get, for a paltry $5 a month, you get ad-free episodes, you get early episodes, and you get bonus episodes.
Tom: This week, you get a bonus episode. It’s already there waiting for you. Not only talking about all the new product, but your trip to New York. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. You went out there to watch the unveiling, [00:06:00] and, uh, you just go into great detail- Mm-hmm … about w- everything that transpired while- Yes … you were in New York, so that’s-
Crystal: All the behind-the-scenes.
Tom: Yes. So that’s all over there waiting for you. Uh, also on this week’s episode, we’re gonna talk about, uh, Cody reveals the worst tipper he ever experienced during his days of being a server.
Crystal: Which is pretty great.
Tom: We have an instructor who might be a judge on The Voice.
Tom: Are we going to be getting skiing classes- … on Peloton? And finally, gym bros and Pilates. They’ve been dipping their toe into the world of Pilates. Oh,
Crystal: boy.
Tom: And, uh, boys, it’s not going how you think. Ladies, it’s going exactly how you think. We will dig into that over on the Patreon. Oh. So, uh, also don’t forget, you can, uh, sign up for the newsletter at theclubhot.com, which did not go out this week.
Crystal: Whoops.
Tom: And watch us on YouTube. So there’s all that. Let’s dig [00:07:00] in, shall we?
Crystal: We shall.
Tom: Peloton has launched a new tread lineup.
Crystal: They have.
Tom: It’s like the fall, it’s like fall TV. We were just talking-
Crystal: We were just
Tom: talking about this … about how you don’t get fall TV anymore.
Crystal: You don’t.
Tom: It doesn’t feel like you do. I mean, I guess you technically do, but it doesn’t feel like it. Now it’s, this is their new fall lineup.
Crystal: It is. It is their new fall lineup. And, uh, how exciting. There is now a foldable treadmill- Oh … a Peloton treadmill. Uh, this little guy is so cute. It’s, uh, really adorable. When it folds up- Mm-hmm … the footprint is actually smaller than the bike.
Tom: That’s crazy.
Crystal: And it is only, quote, unquote, only 290 pounds.
Crystal: Okay. Um, still a hefty piece of machinery, but what’s even better about the fact that it folds is when it folds, it’s on little casters. Mm-hmm. And like, you can one-handed push this thing across the room. Like, it’s, it’s so [00:08:00] easy to move around your apartment. It’s
Tom: like luggage.
Crystal: Well, a little more. A little more umph than that.
Crystal: Well- It’s still 300
Tom: pounds … honey, I’ve seen how you pack.
Crystal: Please. Please. I just went on a trip with three other women, I pack light. Very light. So I j- I, yeah, I should get non-high maintenance woman badge for that. Anyway-
Tom: For that aspect.
Crystal: Uh, wow.
Crystal: Um, with this TreadFlex, another really cool part is whenever you want to put the deck down and have it in the full position- Mm-hmm … to use it it floats down. Like you just- Oh … you just, like, push forward with your heel of your hand- Yeah … and it just zzz. But it’s, like, really nice and slow- Yeah … has a pneumatic release.
Crystal: And, uh, when you
Tom: want it to- Most decks pop up and float down.
Crystal: That’s how that works. Is that how that works? Yeah. Yeah. Um, and then when you do want to put, fold it back up, it, like, equates to around [00:09:00] 30 pounds of leverage that you need to use to be able to put- So it’s, it’s very accessible.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: This is not something that you have to be able to lift, like, 100 pounds to be able to fold up.
Crystal: Right.
Tom: Um- It’s always, it’s a weird sweet spot for s- things like that, right? It is. Because, like, you want something to feel like it has, like, heft- Heft … and sturdiness. Yes. But you also don’t want something that just feels like an immovable object.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: So, like, that’s a, that can be a, a difficult s- you know- Mount to stick?
Crystal: Sure.
Tom: Sure.
Crystal: It also has the smaller monitor that was on, like the same size monitor that’s on the Cross Training- Mm-hmm … Platform across the board.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And there- you’re not really giving up very much for this, but if you want all the new bells and whistles that come on the Tread Vision and the Tread Vision Plus-
Tom: Right
Crystal: that’s the trade-off, right? Because then there, there are, for the Tread Vision and the Tread Vision Plus, those have a larger screen. So now you’re [00:10:00] getting a 23.8-inch monitor.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Still not as large as like what I have on my Tread Plus, but larger than the Cross Training equipment.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Okay? Uh, they also still swivel 180 degrees.
Crystal: Okay. So across the board, all three Treads do that.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: The Tread Vision and the Tread Vision Plus also come equipped with the, that really nice new Peloton fan. So it’s built in.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: You don’t have to buy that extra is what I mean.
Tom: Gotcha.
Crystal: And then they also have fans, uh, not s- I just said fans.
Crystal: They also have Sonos speakers on both- Oh … of these. Now, the Tread Flex does not. It has forward-facing speakers, but they’re not the Sonos speakers. Gotcha. Okay? And then, uh, the new Tread Vision and Tread Vision Plus also have new really desi- newly redesigned knobs, okay? So for years you’ve been able to quickly go one point up by pressing the center button of the knob.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: One full point, whether that’s speed or incline. And now they [00:11:00] have added an up button and a down button, so now you can decrease as quickly as you increase. That’s very huge, especially for people who are doing sprints or interval training- Yeah … to be able to get that speed or decrease that speed or incline very quickly.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: And then there are all kinds of new features that were released. My favorite, I’m so freaking excited-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: about reruns Not exactly thrilled about the name, ’cause it kinda sounds like you got the runs. You know what I mean?
Tom: I was thinking it sounds like it’s just like, well, it’s just classes that are on demand.
Tom: Well- You’ve already seen them. They’re reruns …
Crystal: interestingly, it is a play off of that, because you do a c- you do a run outside- Right … and you capture it with your Apple Watch or your Garmin, your Fitbit, and now your Whoop, because also brand new, they are now fully inter- interlinked with Whoop now. Nice. Yes.
Crystal: I was very excited when- I bet … I got to [00:12:00] set that up yesterday. Um- You literally Whooped. I did. That’s what I call it then. I did Whoop. And, uh, you capture one of these ri- runs while you’re outside, right? You come back to your Tread and you want to redo that run, now you can do it inside. Yeah. And it, it has the actual elevation, every- and the speed and everything that you did.
Crystal: Well, elevation, I guess you can change your own speed however- Sure … you want to. It’s- But it, it, it- That’s
Tom: already built into- It is … your human body.
Crystal: It is. Yeah. And, uh, one of the coolest things about this is not only can you do this with any of your own runs, but they’ve put curated runs on here too. So the New York City Marathon is gonna be on there.
Tom: Yeah, the first thing I said was like, “Oh, you could’ve captured the marathon when you ran it,” and you’re like, “Preloaded.”
Crystal: They already did it.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: They already did it. Uh, now, I will say some of the documentation that came out afterwards said it was segments of the New York City Marathon. Mm. When I was there in person, it sure looked like the whole thing, but I didn’t get to…
Crystal: we had, like, 35 minutes-
Tom: Right …
Crystal: before we asked questions, so it’s like, there, there was a lot to take in. Right. And then the other thing [00:13:00] is, is all of the instructors’ favorite routes are gonna be on there. So, like, if they take a route all the time, you see them running it, you’re gonna be able to take it- Yeah
Crystal: on the Tread. And uh, the run clubs, the PSL and the PSNY run club- Mm-hmm … those routes will be on there as well.
Tom: I wonder if they will eventually sync those with scenic runs. How cool would that be? It
Crystal: would be very cool. I hope that they do because one of the things that you can do is this other thing called Just Guidance, and it is a heart rate feature for people who are looking to do steady state running.
Crystal: You can pull up any of the entertainment options off of Peloton’s entertainment tab, and you can use Just Guidance and then go to the heart rate training zone two, and it will increase your speed, increase your incline, decrease automatically to keep you in that zone two-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: automatically. So you’re not having to touch it, do anything.
Crystal: You can kinda zone out. Someti- Right … sometimes you just- You can zone
Tom: two out.
Crystal: You c- You can. Sometimes you just, [00:14:00] you just wanna watch a TV show and not think about what you’re doing. Now, I don’t recommend that with exercise on a very often basis.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: But hey, everybody comes to exercise in their own way.
Tom: For sure.
Crystal: So, like, whatever. It’s an awesome option either way. Then another one, okay, so then another one of my favorite new features is called, uh, Run Analysis that they do by tracking your gait. So on the new Vision and Vision Plus, the camera that’s built in is the cross-training camera. Mm-hmm. And they were able to change it up slightly to be able to, you g- you stand on your treadmill, and you calibrate for, like, seven seconds.
Crystal: Yeah. And then it is able to track you, and track your, uh, vertical oscillation and your stride rate. And then it says, like, what your score is at the end of your class, and then it will give you a tip on how to improve specifically your running. And it doesn’t give you a ton of tips, it does one at a time.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: Whatever the, it seem- whatever it thinks is the most [00:15:00] helpful, like something that you can get the most return on.
Tom: Gotcha. Interesting.
Crystal: Yeah. Um, this is… Now this is a really huge thing. I don’t wanna just skip over this because I have used all kinds of different things. Uh, those little run pods I put on my shoes, for example.
Crystal: Mm-hmm. Oh,
Tom: yeah.
Crystal: Those are specifically to track your oscillation, your gait, your stride. It does all of that, and then you, in theory, can use it to improve. I never really got much out of it to be able to figure out how to improve, okay?
Tom: Right.
Crystal: But that’s a, that’s called the Stryd Pod, S-T-R-Y-D.
Crystal: This is the first of any treadmill out there, nobody else has this on a treadmill. So this is really big news. Right. I did ask, can you use it to track things like pronation, over pronation? You cannot, yet. Hmm. Yet. Uh, they worked with a, uh, specialist in gait s- well, some kind of gait specialist- … out of a, a university in Wisconsin, came in and, like, [00:16:00] helped them set this up, which I thought was really cool.
Crystal: By the way, going back to the reruns, I just thought this was really fun, a little fact, that the the person who came up with that was just doing, like, a one-off little throwaway AI thing. Yeah. Like, he was just like, “Oh, I’m just having fun.” And everyone saw it and was like, “No, no, no, no, no. We need to ship that.
Crystal: That’s amazing.” And, like, I’m so here for it. Like, that that is- Yeah … so freaking exciting. Those are the biggest features that you have on the Tread Vision and the Tread Vision Plus. The Tread Vision Plus also has the brand-new sled mode. Now, here’s where I am conflicted on which version of the Tread to get.
Tom: Mm-hmm.
Crystal: The sled mode is like f- you get to it by going to free mode, which if you have a Tread Plus now, you already have free mode. Right. But when you go into it, now you can enter between 30 pounds of weight to 300 pounds of weight.
Tom: Yikes.
Crystal: And that can simulate sled pushing, which is, like, what you use for HYROX training.
Crystal: Uh, [00:17:00] but you know, pushing a stroller, other things like that, uh, y- you can train for life in many ways by using that.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: So if you already have a Tread Plus, this feature will roll out to you, because they did all the software to be backwards compatible within the limitations of- Your machine. So for example, my original Tread+ does not have the fancy camera on it.
Crystal: Mm-hmm. So I cannot do gait tracking.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: But I do have the free mode, so I will get the sled push.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Okay? And that’s where it’s tricky for me because I don’t really need the sled push.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: So I’m like, I’m thinking my Tread is gonna die eventually, so when we move I need to figure out which new Tread to get.
Tom: I mean, you bought it the day it came out, so like you’ve had it for a good chunk of time.
Crystal: I have. Yeah. I have. Back in the earnings call, I will also say that Peter Stern said when new hardware came out that there were going to be vast incentives for people who already owned equipment. It makes me wonder when this goes live on October 1st, will we see those incentives?
Crystal: Right. People are saying they’re [00:18:00] gonna wait until Black Friday to see if there are sales. I don’t know that there will be sales. In the past, and listen, Peloton is very different than it used to be, so I am not saying this will happen- Sure … at all. Back in the day, though, they did not do Black Friday sales the first year a piece of equipment came out.
Crystal: Now, last year when the Cross Training equipment came out, they did. Right. So I’m not saying it will or it won’t, I’m just saying something to consider, uh, if you’re gonna make plans based around that. Also for those who are thinking, well, they just came out with a new Tread I think it’s interesting to note that all three of these treadmills are completely taking over the store, which means there will be no legacy treadmill like mine for sale- Right
Crystal: anymore. There will be no legacy Tread+. There will be no Cross Training series. They’re all gone. It is only these three.
Tom: Now what about the Guide?
Crystal: Yeah, it’s been off the market for a while now. Oh, I’ve-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: there’s
Tom: no Guide vision
Crystal: or- Mm-mm. Oh, okay. No. But you do get, you do get all the tracking.
Tom: That’s true.
Tom: All that stuff is built
Crystal: in. It’s all built in now. Yeah, I was being- You don’t need it. I know you were …
Tom: I was being shitty.
Crystal: I know. But there are a [00:19:00] lot of people that are real upset about that because they really liked the Guide- Mm-hmm … and they’re bummed that it’s gone and, and the support is go- it’s still being supported, but they’re not…
Crystal: Like, they, they want new features to come out for that. Right. And that’s not happening. Yeah. So, so yeah. I, I think overall this is very exciting. I do have lots of questions I would like answers to, though. Why did they decide to do these three Treads right now? Mm-hmm. Also, for those of you who are wondering about the quality, I had several conversations, or attempted to have several conversations.
Crystal: It was just really busy, not like people wouldn’t talk to me.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: But I didn’t necessarily get a full d- in-depth conversation with people about the, the customer service questions that I know a lot of people have around the treadmills. There have long since been concerns Buy a tread if the deck, if something breaks on it, it just becomes a paperweight.
Crystal: Right. You’re talking a 6 to $7,000 paperweight. That’s a big deal.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And so my question to Peloton was like, well, then what is to give people comfort to buy these when you know that [00:20:00] you already have these issues? Now, I was told by one person I’m waiting to get documentation for this. I don’t know if I ever will see it.
Crystal: I don’t know- Yeah … what they are allowed to provide and what they are not allowed- Right … to provide. I don’t mean they’re hiding anything, but there are things that are proprietary, right? Right. W- what I was told is that they rebuilt the treadmills from the ground up, and they completely redesigned the deck, and that in the past, the deck has been very difficult to repair in home because of the way it was, the original was designed.
Crystal: You couldn’t just, like, go in, swap out a part in a home, put in a new part. It was just very impossible to do. Right. And that’s why the decks had to be replaced. Supposedly, this new one is much easier to repair in home. Where it gets fuzzy for me is where did that start? Are we talking on the Cross Training?
Crystal: Are we talking just on these? What’s the difference between the Cross Training tread deck and these decks? Right. Uh, they did add cushioning to the Vision and the Vision Plus. The Vision Plus still has the slats, and they are slats that are on ball bearings, which means that they are [00:21:00] the most comfortable that you could possibly get, the best kind of, uh, compression, like-
Tom: Bounciness?
Crystal: Y- it, it like takes away the hurt. Like, it, it takes the impact out of every step. Gotcha. Um, the most cushioning. And, uh, they said that they also took the Tread Vision and they added a new cushioning system to that. Again, unclear how that is different than specifically the Cross Training tread, but it is very different than the original tread.
Crystal: Um, the instructors made a big deal about how much more cushioning this one has compared to the original tread.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: But I’m unclear about the Cross Training one, so
Tom: That’s a lot.
Crystal: It is a lot.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: It is a lot. And, um, I- I’m excited about this, but, uh, I… Like I said, I’m a little confused. Like, why just a year later?
Crystal: Like, if you knew that you were working on these, why even release that? But maybe it was just so far around, uh, in the, the design pipeline, it was too late to turn it back. Yeah. I, I don’t know. I don’t know how that would work or not work. [00:22:00] It’s confusing. I will say that Peter Stern talked a lot about the fact that there is a lot of innovation talent at Peloton that was going unused, and a lot of the things, these new features, are due to the innovation that the engineers put into it.
Crystal: Like, these are, these are very Peloton specific things. Yeah. And that’s really cool that Peloton is leveraging that talent. But it does make you wonder, like, is this now the iPhone? Are we gonna see one of these every year? I don’t think that we will. No, yeah. I, I think this is it for a while.
Crystal: And why the treads, right? Now, Peter also talked about that, that like, um, if you look at running, it’s become such a huge thing, over biking especially. Yeah. And that, uh, there are all kinds of people that are famous that are doing run clubs now. Right. Like Gunna. Yeah. Like, uh, Wiz Khalifa. There’s all kinds of them, and that Peloton is going all in on that running because it’s so huge.
Tom: I feel like- From a strategy standpoint, they’re probably like, “Well, we’ve kind of captured the bike [00:23:00] market, and so the most room for growth is in treads.”
Crystal: Yeah. I do think that that’s what they’re thinking. The idea of this lineup is to have a tread for everyone. Like, if you’re a person who has an apartment, a really small space, hey, we’ve got you with- Right
Crystal: this folding tread. If you’re- Or a
Tom: smaller budget …
Crystal: or a smaller budget, or just not a person who runs all the time. Right. Maybe you just like to walk. Yeah. Maybe you don’t want to spend $7,000 to walk in- Yeah … your apartment or your house, even if you have the room in your house- For
Tom: sure …
Crystal: which is completely fair.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And so that, you know, that is geared toward the person who maybe isn’t 100% into running. You know, they’re, they’re just like, “I wanna walk, I wanna hike, I wanna… I wanna do the things, but I’m not all in.”
Tom: Right.
Crystal: And that’s okay. And then you have the Tread Vision, which is geared more towards, you know, you’re kind of on your journey- Mm-hmm
Crystal: and you are putting in a lot of miles. But again, maybe you have a smaller budget, maybe you don’t wanna y- you’re not into high rocks and you just- Right … have a smaller budget, maybe you have a smaller footprint in your home, that kind of thing. And then you have the Tread Vision, which is like, you already [00:24:00] are a runner, you already are putting in a lot of miles, and, or maybe you’re a person who c- is concerned about their joints, you maybe you’re, maybe you have joint issues- Yeah
Crystal: maybe you’re a little older, those kinds of things. This is the one for you, if it’s in your budget to be able to do. So that’s what they’re hoping- Yeah … is to be able to cover all of the different budgets out there. Of course, there are still lots of people who are negative- … because they’re-
Tom: On the internet?
Crystal: I know. I know. That doesn’t sound right. Uh, but you know, for the most part, I heard a lot of really good things. Um, the only people that seem to be upset are the people who just bought a cross-training tread. But here’s the thing. If you just bought a cross-training tread, you get all of these new features.
Crystal: Right. It rolls out to you. If you, if you have a cross-training Tread Plus, and you have the camera that allows you to do the things and the s- the slats, you get everything here.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And I think that’s worth noting. Yeah. Like, that’s, the, it’s not like it stops working, you know, just because of that.
Tom: Yeah, they could have gate kept that technology. They
Crystal: could have.
Tom: And to try to push you to a new one. And
Crystal: it would’ve been a dick move. So-
Tom: It would’ve been.
Crystal: I’m glad that- Yeah … they did not do that. Agreed. But [00:25:00] they, they were really open about it. Also- you know, I just remembered this and I didn’t cover this in our bonus episode, so I’m gonna just say it here, what pops into my head
Tom: But everybody listening owes us $5.
Tom: Go ahead.
Crystal: When I was having the different conversations I was having, one of them was with Sarah Robb O’Hagan, and we were just talking about community and legacy and all of the things. And, uh, by the way, I gave her a wish list. You OGs just know that I got your back. Like- … I, I got you. Um, but, uh, she was talking about AI and how there are so many really big opinions about AI.
Crystal: Yeah. And, um, you either think it’s a hero or you think it’s the end times, and it depends on the day for me- Yeah … really, I’ll be honest. But, um, anyway, I brought up the fact that there are people out there who really think that, like, Peloton is trying to push as much AI towards the instructors and, like, really minimizing instructors, and she was like, “Never.”
Crystal: Yeah. Like, she was, like, aghast- Right … at the possibility of that. And I just wanna say that [00:26:00] because I feel like Peloton can’t talk to all of us, you know? Yeah. But I know these are the things that are on people’s minds, and so it makes me feel better to hear their opinions about that.
Tom: And honestly look, the instructors are well-paid.
Crystal: Mm-hmm.
Tom: And they should be. Like- Yeah … I don’t begrudge them that. But I gotta think, in the grand scheme of expenditures for Peloton- That’s
Crystal: their bread and butter …
Tom: that’s a drop in the bucket. And so, like, eliminating or reducing them to replace them with AI, I think the cost savings would be negligible, and the reputational damage would be incalculable.
Crystal: I agree. I agree wholeheartedly. And, and so- And, but they know that, and that’s-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: that’s the really great part, is they get-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: that. There are some companies that don’t.
Tom: No. But, like, people co- come to Peloton for the personal interaction or what fee- Absolutely … I know it’s not actually personal interaction-
Tom: but what feels like personal interaction, right? Yeah, yeah. Like, it’s the [00:27:00] parasocial relationships writ large. And, uh, and so, like, yeah, like, that would be… And n- not that we’ve never seen companies make mistakes like that before, New Coke, but but it just it just seems so obvious. It would be jaw-dropping if they thought that would be a benefit to them.
Crystal: Absolutely. I completely agree. I, I really believe that Sarah Robb O’Hagan in particular is really excited about the community and really wants to bring people together and really wants to show people- Yeah … and the community what Peloton is. And so I’m excited to see what the future brings in that area as well.
Tom: Absolutely.
Tom: So coming up after this, we’ve got more, uh, a little bit more Tread stuff. We’re gonna talk about the face of the advertising campaign for the new Tread rollout.
Tom: We’re also gonna talk about self-paced custom workouts and what Peloton Commercial is doing in light of all this, so stick around.
Tom: so new equipment means new advertising, new [00:28:00] marketing materials.
Crystal: Mm-hmm.
Tom: And they have a new celebrity
Crystal: endorser- Yeah …
Tom: along for the ride.
Crystal: They do. Uh, Miley Cyrus did a whole campaign with Peloton. Same director that di- that directed the Hudson Williams commercial.
Crystal: And, uh, she was repping for the Tread Flex.
Crystal: Um, I believe that Peloton is probably going to put a lot of marketing into the Tread Flex, because that has been the most requested by far- Yeah … uh, tread change that they did.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And I think it, it’s really smart.
Tom: And you don’t bring in somebody of Miley Cyrus’… Oh, I’m th- she’s just Miley now.
Crystal: Oh, right, right, right.
Crystal: Just
Tom: Miley.
Crystal: Just Miley, sorry.
Tom: You don’t bring in someone of Miley’s stature- You
Crystal: do not …
Tom: and then not also put a bunch of marketing dollars behind it, so.
Crystal: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Tom: So like,
Crystal: that- I don’t know if you saw, but they also are going to be doing a Miley, uh, artist series in October.
Tom: That tracks.
Crystal: It does. It, I thought it was funny because since there were a lot of people that did not realize that these treads were [00:29:00] dropping, I mean, how would you?
Crystal: How would you know? Sure. They put a commercial out that, like, th- they just did a teaser that had Miley Cyrus. And you, people who know Miley, excuse me, Miley-
Crystal: They could recognize that it was Miley by her tattoos.
Tom: Oh, okay.
Crystal: And, uh, I don’t know her well enough to know that. Like, I wouldn’t- Nor I … but instantly people knew and thought, “Oh my God, it’s gonna be an artist series.” And so that’s what everybody was guessing. And then whenever they did their big reveal for the treads, then they also put out their ad, and then they were like, “And there’s gonna be an artist series in October.”
Crystal: Yeah. Which I just, I thought was cute because people were still right, you know?
Tom: So, uh, Peloton is also rolling out self-paced custom workouts.
Crystal: Yeah. I think this is due to all of the changes and advances with the IQ.
Tom: Mm-hmm.
Crystal: Um, but now you… we talked about just last week that they had put in patents to be able to change your workouts on the, on the go.
Crystal: Remember those patents we talked about? Yeah. Well, I mean, this appears to be utilizing those patents that have been awarded and self-paced [00:30:00] strength that is tailored to you. So this means you can start a strength class and go at your own pace, whether it’s by speed, you can change it up mid-class. You can…
Crystal: There are, uh, workouts that run from 10 to 45 minutes across beginner and intermediate levels. The library has a ton. We, in our article, we just put a few in. There’s a timer that’s in the top right-hand corner, and it’s one of the things that you can… shows you that you can modify the class. It appears on a 20-minute chest and back strength with a plan by Jocelyn Thompson Rule.
Crystal: And, uh, then you can go in and edit it. So, like, here’s the plan, but now you can change it for you on the fly. Hmm. And I t- I just think that’s really cool.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Sometimes you’re in a hurry, sometimes oh, I’m not getting… Like, oh, I needed to change the weight more than I thought I did. So n- now you feel like, well, I only did three reps, so, like, let me, now I need to add three more.
Crystal: There’s all kinds of reasons you might wanna change that l- you know, that layout. Right. Maybe you felt better than you thought you would, maybe you didn’t [00:31:00] burn out as quickly as you thought you would, or maybe you’re doing the other way around. You’re like, “I thought I was ready for bear, and then I got on the-
Crystal: I got on this machine, and turns out- You’re ready
Tom: for cub.
Crystal: I’m not. So anyway, I thought this was very cool,
Tom: so. Absolutely. A Peloton commercial also ha-
Crystal: I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Tom. It is. I forgot to say something very important.
Tom: Oh.
Crystal: Uh, this is only on the equipment that has the cameras. So right now that’s the Cross Training, Bike Plus, Tread Plus, and Row.
Crystal: I assume, and this is an assumption on my part- You will be able to see this on the new equipment
Tom: That seems logical.
Crystal: It does. Yeah. It does. I’m just saying. Yeah. I have not confirmed.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: But like old school me-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: can’t use it.
Tom: Gotcha.
Crystal: We are now to the point where I can’t use things.
Tom: Mm. Mm.
Tom: You knew this day would come eventually.
Crystal: I did.
Tom: We all get older.
Crystal: That’s true, we do.
Tom: Time is linear.
Crystal: It is.
Tom: I thought you knew.
Crystal: Uh, yeah. You tell me every other episode, actually. Yeah.
Tom: [00:32:00] A Peloton commercial.
Crystal: Yes.
Tom: Am I good? Can I talk about Peloton commercial? You can. You know how excited I get about-
Crystal: I, I do …
Tom: about-
Crystal: Tell me all about the things, Tom
Tom: about corporate products.
Crystal: Tell me all about this.
Tom: A Peloton commercial, it has unveiled a new lineup.
Crystal: That’s all you got?
Tom: That’s all I know. Okay. And I say that, and then you take over.
Crystal: Oh, okay. And
Tom: then I’ll make a deck joke. See what
Crystal: I did there? I do. Yeah. I do. Okay. So the commercial bike and tread are now ready to order.
Crystal: We’ve been waiting for this day for a very, very long time. Yeah. Here’s the funny thing. We still don’t know pricing. Uh, I think you have to literally talk to these people.
Tom: Well, and I think in their defense-
Crystal: I say it’s a good reason …
Tom: I think some of that is because since it’s commercial- Mm-hmm
Tom: they don’t know how many you wanna buy.
Crystal: Right.
Tom: So, like, if you’re- There’s- … buying for an apartment complex, you’re getting one price. If you’re buying for 10 apartment complexes, you’re getting a different price. If you’re buying for every Hilton in the Northern Hemisphere, [00:33:00] then you’re gonna get a different price.
Crystal: It’s true. I- the reason I said that we don’t have the price yet is I can’t tell you the number of people who are so bougie they wanna have this for theirselves. Yeah Because they want the best- Yeah … and they want to know it’s gonna last.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: And more power to you.
Tom: And they probably want their LLC to buy it and then write it off.
Crystal: I mean, hey, if you’ve got- Yeah … the LLC to do it-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: that’s the way to do it.
Tom: That’s the way you do
Crystal: it. It’s, yeah. So though I call them bougie, it’s really just from a place of jealousy. It’s,
Tom: yes. We have bougie envy.
Crystal: We do. I would really love to see, like, just how much it costs for just a person to have- Right
Crystal: a commercial bike. To buy one. Or a commercial bike.
Tom: Maybe you should put together a little group-
Crystal: Right? …
Tom: and be like, “These 10 people would like to buy 10, please.”
Crystal: If somebody wants to put that together, I don’t have enough energy. Yeah. I’m just, I’m not gonna. But, you know, i- include me. Yeah And then, and then I’ll see the price, ’cause, you know, if it’s not too much more than the Tread+, and it’s got all the things, eh.
Crystal: Yeah. That’s, I’d have to think real seriously about it, for real.
Tom: Yeah, makes [00:34:00] sense.
Crystal: So anyway, it, this is the first time that Peloton is bringing all of the connected fitness experience, but all of the Precor, this is gonna last a long time, commercial experience- Durability … together. This is the first time this is happening.
Crystal: Yeah. So very exciting. Uh, I’m so, so glad to see Peloton doing this. I think this is huge for the company, and I can’t wait to see how it comes back in returns. Yeah. Probably know it in about three to six months, as long as it will take. Like, it doesn’t, it’s not like day one, you turn it on and you have it.
Crystal: Well, there’s a billion orders. You know. It takes a second.
Tom: I think especially when you’re dealing
Crystal: B2B. R- absolutely. Right? Yeah. I mean, we just know how slow people are to move on anything. Yeah. Especially right now. This economy is freaking bonkers.
Tom: One B is slow enough. You throw a second B into the mix?
Crystal: Oh, man.
Tom: Oh, man. It’s craziness.
Crystal: There’s signing, there’s talking, it’s-
Tom: There’s POs.
Crystal: Ugh. Terms and conditions. Ugh. Get the lawyers involved.
Tom: Get those T&Cs. Ugh. They get you every time.
Crystal: Oh my God. I’ve been having a real T&C [00:35:00] nightmare this week. But not with Peloton.
Tom: So, uh, Peloton is adding more micro stores with more on the way.
Crystal: Yeah. Now, we did talk about this after the last earnings call, but I did wanna just, you know, say this again because I feel like people … Not everybody listens to every single episode, which is just- What? … crazy to me.
Tom: Why would you b- live your life in such a-
Crystal: I know …
Tom: such a s- closed off manner?
Crystal: We have all the details.
Crystal: This is a good example of the details, though. So we’ve been saying for a while that Peloton was kind of like really putting all in on these micro stores. Mm-hmm. Everything that they’re coming back with on their ROI is showing these are making so much more money, uh, for so much less output of funds and resources than the big stores did.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: And so they have 10 right now. The last earnings call, they said, “Okay, we’re gonna open up a- at least 10 more by Christmas, by the holiday season.” Yeah. So, like, that is in the process right now. You’re gonna see boom, boom, boom, all these Micro Stores popping up, and that’s because they have these new [00:36:00] pieces of equipment, and they wanna get it in front of as many people as possible, right?
Tom: Right, ’cause a lot of people wanna try something before they buy it.
Crystal: Absolutely. That’s not crazy. It is not crazy. Yeah. And they used to have 60 stores across the United States. They don’t anymore. And so, this is an important piece to know. So, like, keep checking because, you know, especially if you live in a very populous area, you are probably going to be in line for-
Tom: Yeah
Crystal: a, a Micro Store- My guess is- … at some point. I just don’t know if it’ll be this year.
Tom: My guess is if you live in one of the top 30 markets- Right … you’re probably going to get one.
Crystal: Guess who’s not. We’re not getting one.
Tom: Yeah, we’re- I
Crystal: assure you …
Tom: we’re at the, we’re, I think we’re, like, 27?
Crystal: Yeah, we’re, we’re pretty close to the bottom.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Uh, and our retail is weird right now. But anyway so that’s really cool for people that are… And I also, it seems, one of the questions that I have not gotten an answer to and my fault, I forgot to actually ask it, was the, uh, third-party vendors like Dick’s Sporting Goods- Mm-hmm … et cetera.
Crystal: Now, all signs point to Dick’s Sporting Goods is going to get them because they are clearing out floor models right now.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: So that’s another, like, little [00:37:00] tidbit for you. Yeah. Like, if you’re just looking for a cheap tread, you don’t care old model, new model, whatever-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: go get yourself a floor model because they are out there, and they are selling them real cheap right now.
Crystal: But anyway, that indicates that we are gonna
Tom: see this. So you’re recommending that people check out Dick’s?
Crystal: Absolutely.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Yeah. Look at them real close.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Want you to take your time.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: And, uh- Or just- … I want you to get up on there and try it out. Yeah. You know? Just So-
Tom: I’ve corrupted you.
Tom: Not complaining. Go on.
Crystal: I, no word yet on Amazon, but I suspect we’re gonna see the same thing. There was another third party in Canada that’s gonna be selling these as well. I can’t remember. It’s like, it’s something that I’ve just never heard of. It’s, like, Fitness4You or something like that. Right.
Crystal: It’s gonna be another third-party reseller in Canada. By the way, all those treads, going back to that, not everything is gonna be available in all markets. But if you read our article, we’ve got a breakdown of, like, which markets are getting what equipment.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: So, the good news is that a lot of markets are getting at least a version [00:38:00] of the tread.
Crystal: Right. Just may not be all of the versions.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: Okay.
Tom: Peloton every year has what they call a hackathon.
Crystal: They do.
Tom: Which is where they basically get everybody in a room and say, “Come up with ideas.”
Crystal: That’s true.
Tom: And, uh, this year’s winner has been revealed.
Crystal: This one is the winner: Peloton Arcade, a full arcade game built for the bike using cadence resistance and a custom controller. I love that.
Tom: Interesting.
Crystal: I hope we see it.
Tom: I know. That would be cool.
Crystal: That would be really fun.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Um, there were 57 projects total- Yeah … and that was the winner.
Tom: Although I have to say-
Crystal: Oh dear …
Tom: it’s odd that’s the winner given what you’ve seen them doing with Lane Break. To watch Lane Break languish and then they’re like, “You know what would be a good idea? What if you could play a video game on, on the bike?”
Crystal: Okay. But in all fairness Peloton has had to make a lot of cuts.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And they’ve had to really dial stuff down. Clearly they’ve been working on [00:39:00] this innovation in the background and these new features.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: We don’t know that it’s not there on their roadmap to roll out. We don’t know that there’s not more Peloton, uh, Lane Break coming.
Crystal: We don’t know.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I mean, I would think you’d do something. I would li- I would like to think it’s not gonna languish forever- Yeah … and that there is a plan to return it to its former glory. But hell if I know.
Tom: I know the longer it goes-
Crystal: The long- I, it… That’s true. That’s
Tom: very fair. Makes me think there was just one guy that was making all the Lane Breaks and he got laid off.
Crystal: I mean, dude, it’s totally possible.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: It’s totally possible. ‘Cause it’s not like they haven’t laid off a lot of people and not said a word about it, so- Yeah …
Tom: yeah. I always think, I update the hotline at work. “Thank you for calling The Family Arena.” And it’s like if they, if I went away, they wouldn’t even know how to update it.
Crystal: That’s true. That’s true. Yeah. How funny would that be? That would just be, like, just your update forever. Yeah. Just that one update.
Tom: Talking about six shows that happened eight years [00:40:00] ago. Peloton has expanded its educator discount.
Crystal: Yes. Uh, now it is covering counselors and librarians, not just classroom teachers.
Crystal: I thought that was a really cool add.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I tell you what, though it’s, now it’s teachers, professors, assistants, principals, counselors, school nurses, and librarians. That’s the full list.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: But just because people are people, literally someone was like, “Why aren’t substitute teachers on here?”
Tom: Wouldn’t substitute teachers fall under teachers?
Crystal: Seriously, F if I know. You’re- I do- I don’t know …
Tom: you’re still an employee of the school district. Like, I- Are
Crystal: you? I don’t know.
Tom: I mean- I don’t know … that’s who’s paying you.
Crystal: I just-
Tom: I thought you were gonna say it was people, it was gonna be homeschoolers complaining.
Crystal: Lord help us. Yeah. Uh, I did not see that one yet. And I-
Tom: Give it time …
Crystal: I know. I- Now
Tom: that I’ve said it out loud.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Yeah. So, uh, Peloton has announced its upcoming New York City Marathon events.
Crystal: They sure have
Crystal: There are several events that are coming up. There was a yoga flow with Mariana [00:41:00] Fernandez. There’s a shakeout run. There’s going to be a ch- a cheers zone for during the actual race.
Tom: With Norman Clough.
Crystal: No, it’s cheers.
Tom: Oh, I guess just-
Crystal: And that’s Boston.
Tom: I guess just Clough.
Crystal: Oh, sad. Sad. Uh, and then there will be medal Monday to follow. Medal. Oh, with a D. Not metal. Yeah.
Tom: Oh. I was
Crystal: like- Yeah … cool. So, uh, yeah, there’s events that ran from September 21st, which was the yoga, all the way through November 2nd. And, uh, by the way, little side note.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: They changed the New York City Marathon route for the first time in 15 years this year.
Tom: Oh, wow.
Crystal: I think it was a pretty minor change.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: But people are still up in arms about it.
Tom: I bet. Because-
Crystal: Up
Tom: in legs …
Crystal: because change, people are really scared of change. Yes. Very scared.
Tom: Uh, and then finally, uh, not to be outdone, Peloton is invading Canada- … and sponsoring the Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
Crystal: Interesting. I [00:42:00] don’t know that invading Canada is good with our current- Oh … political climate. My
Tom: apologies. That was not a political statement. If you listen at all, you know
Crystal: that was not a political statement. Uh, but yeah, Grete Waitz and Marcel Dinkins are going to both be there.
Tom: Visiting.
Crystal: Visiting. Yes. Uh, there’s gonna be a pre-marathon mobility class and a shakeout run. Grete is going to lead the mobility class. Marcel Dinkins is going to lead the run. And, um, my, my favorite, we don’t have registration for these events yet- Mm
Crystal: but we will post links as soon as we see them. But my favorite part of this posting-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: is that when the artwork was done for this by Jen Kern, one of our lovely helper bees-
Tom: Yeah …
Crystal: she included a picture of Grete with her little headband that has, like, maple leaves from Canada. Right. You know, she’s celebrating Canada.
Tom: Sure.
Crystal: So, Grete saw that and was like, “I guess I’m bringing the headband, laughing my ass off.” And I was like, “Grete, you should really [00:43:00] just carry that everywhere.” Yeah. Like, it should just be in your luggage. Like, I just think you’re representing.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: You know?
Tom: The same way Bart Simpson always has the same outfit on.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Clearly.
Tom: matty Maggiacomo and his husband have announced that they have a baby girl en route.
Crystal: They do. They do. And, uh, we are so excited for them. Yeah. Congratulations to Matty and Evan. By the way-
Tom: Yes …
Crystal: they were featured in Queerty Magazine- Mm-hmm
Crystal: for having the best baby reveal ever. I don’t know if you saw it, but they did a recipe of … ‘Cause you know how it’s like l- the, the old saying is like spice and- Sugar and spice and everything
Tom: nice.
Crystal: Yeah. So they did that, and then they added in little, tiny, little, tiny baby shoes. And they had like, like all kinds of things in there, including a picture of Cher, was really- It was just so Matty and Evan.
Crystal: Like- So they’ve
Tom: already picked a name.
Crystal: I [00:44:00] think there’s only one Cher. I don’t think they would do that.
Tom: I think the, uh, fans of Clueless would beg to differ.
Crystal: Listen, I don’t think they’re gonna do that. No. I just, I feel like that would be disrespectful of the Cher.
Tom: Gotcha.
Crystal: That’s just how I feel. Okay. I could be wrong.
Crystal: Yeah. I could be wrong. Maybe they see it as an homage. Yeah. I don’t know. But, uh, the baby Maggiacomo will be arriving sometime in December, so we are officially on baby watch, and I’m so here for it. These two are gonna be amazing parents.
Tom: Bex Gentry will be headlining World Mental Health Day Festival.
Crystal: She will, yeah. Um, this is gonna be a great opportunity for you to check out Bex and see her, and be able to, like, interact with her.
Tom: Mm-hmm.
Crystal: I love these one-offs because you can get a chance to do that outside of the studio.
Tom: Right.
Crystal: Um, so definitely make sure that you check that out.
Tom: And, uh, speaking of interaction, but at a studio-
Crystal: Okay …
Tom: Emma Lovewell will be at PSL next weekend.
Crystal: She will, yeah. And, um, she is doing, like, your regular classes, but she’s also gonna be doing one of those four-year classes, [00:45:00] and, uh, it will not be ever airing.
Crystal: So, like, you get a special moment with Emma if you take one of those four-year classes. I just think those are so fascinating.
Tom: Peloton Unplugged. It
Crystal: is,
Tom: yeah. That’s what they should call it. That’s right. Except that’s probably trademarked, and they would get sued, but does MTV even exist anymore? Who’s to say?
Crystal: Who’s to say indeed.
Tom: John Summit joined a Jess King live class.
Crystal: Yes, and, uh, Rebecca Kennedy. I know we don’t have that on here, but, uh, I know that because while we were there, these were being filmed.
Tom: Ah.
Crystal: Uh, and, uh, they had, like, a bunch of people in there, and, like, you could go and watch this being filmed live.
Crystal: Mm-hmm. Not only could you be in the class, but you could watch in the control room, and people were very excited. Like, I don’t know… I’m old, so I didn’t know who John Summit was. Right. Though I have to say, after seeing the, uh, like, teasers and stuff- Mm … he looks like a lot of fun. Yeah. Like, very looks like really fun music.
Crystal: But, uh, he is going to be having some… He’s gonna be at some kind of festival that’s happening. Again, I’m old. I don’t know- Right … where the festival circuits are. Come on. Just
Tom: [00:46:00] a young person festival- … palooza
Crystal: fest. And and I guess Jess King is also gonna be performing as a DJ there. Ah. And so they seem to have a, like, personal relationship outside of Peloton.
Crystal: Like, outside of this partnership, they also- Yeah … are actually, like, knowledgeable and in the know of each other. Cohorts. Yeah. Like, I don’t know how close their relationship is. I don’t wanna overstate. But they- Right … they seem to know each other outside of just this.
Tom: Gotcha.
Crystal: But yeah, he was in both of their classes, and, uh, I know the energy in the studio was very high.
Crystal: People were very, very excited about this happening. It was very cute.
Tom: Uh, Leanne Hainsby Aldis, freshly back to work, already getting awards.
Crystal: Man, she’s, like, back 10 seconds. Yeah. And she, uh, she’s gonna be getting this award from the Gabe Grunewald Inspiration Award, and it is presented by the Active Against Cancer.
Crystal: And of course, that is recognizing her work as a breast cancer survivor- Mm-hmm … and advocate, of which she has done a lot, so. Absolutely. Congrats to Leanne. That’s really cool.
Tom: Coming up after this, [00:47:00] other connected fitness. We’ll see what the competitors and whatnot are doing. We’re gonna talk Aura, Apple Fitness.
Tom: Things ain’t looking good over there. And Nike and Lululemon kiss and make up, so stick around. Editor.
Tom: Aura has launched its IPO, or is, I guess, fixing to
Crystal: Yes. Fixing to is correct. And we talked about a couple weeks ago what that was gonna look like, like $4 billion or $2 billion, I don’t remember.
Crystal: But at any rate where they have settled now is they are going to do their IPO at between 40 and $40, $44 a share.
Tom: Oh.
Crystal: That’s their IPO.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: That is not cheap.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Good luck to you.
Tom: Good luck to you-
Crystal: I don’t know if now’s- … sirs and madams … I don’t know if now’s the time, Aura, but I guess when is the time?
Tom: That is true. But, uh, it’ll be interesting to see how that, uh, shakes out. Uh, you know, I guess it’s not the time for Apple Fitness+. [00:48:00] Uh, their staff has been hit with layoffs.
Crystal: Yeah, they did a lot of layoffs, and they said that there are going to be… It looks like there’s a bunch of changes coming to Apple Fitness.
Crystal: Uh, they wanna have it, but they don’t really want to continue to put a lot into it. Um, they said that they reportedly laid off a handful of employees, and they said there are, that is just the beginning of bigger changes to come. So there was guided time to walk, time to run audio sessions. Uh, the new releases are not going away completely, but they will drop in frequency and Apple Fitness+ in general, like I said, they wanna keep it, it’s not on the chopping block, but it is considerable cost.
Crystal: I just wanna say for all you finance bros that told me that this meant that Peloton was going to be- … bought by Apple, and it was over for Peloton because Apple was gonna get in the game, and they were gonna come out with their own equipment, you were wrong about all of it. Suck it.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Because I was right about all of it.
Tom: I also [00:49:00] find it fascinating that they’re like, “Eh, this isn’t worth spending money on,” considering how many shows are on Apple TV that you’ve never heard of.
Crystal: It’s true.
Tom: It’s like falling into, like… It’s like living the Mandela effect sometimes.
Crystal: It is, but I will also say I think that what’s different about a TV show, and I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong, but, like, you have a, a beginning and end point, and you have a certain amount of people.
Crystal: So it, like, it has contained costs. With, with the Apple Fitness and any, any time you’re having all these classes, it’s just all these people that have to be there all the time. I- it’s not like this is a contained budget. It just, it always is growing.
Tom: Yeah. I just gotta think that those TV shows…
Tom: I mean, there’s a Jason Momoa, like, Game of Thrones style TV show that has ran for, like, three or four seasons. No. They’ve spent, like, 3 or $400 million on it. Can you even name it?
Crystal: No.
Tom: Gary Oldman has a show-
Crystal: No …
Tom: called Slow Horses.
Crystal: What?
Tom: It was just [00:50:00] renewed for its eighth season.
Crystal: What?
Tom: Have you ever even seen it pop up on Apple TV as- No
Tom: a suggested program? No, and
Crystal: I, and I love Gary Oldman. He’s an amazing actor. And
Tom: I, I’ve heard it’s great. It even got nominated, I think, for an Emmy, li- like Best Outs- like Outstanding Series or something. But, like, it’s gonna be in its eighth season.
Crystal: That’s, uh, I mean, these are fair points. Well- These are fair points
Tom: but, like, they can’t afford the guy that runs the audio for Apple Fitness+.
Crystal: They, they wanna have their fingers in all the pies- Yeah … but they don’t wanna do… They just wanna keep other people from having all the money. Yeah. You know? Apple’s… Listen- I like all my Apple stuff, but like they are no longer the king of everything
Tom: I feel like it’s a little window into how little used Apple Fitness+ is.
Crystal: Cheers.
Tom: That it that they’re-
Crystal: Again, I will say to all of you who told me it was the beginning of the world- Yeah … changing and Peloton was gonna go down.
Tom: They’re like, “We shit money, but like, not like that.”
Crystal: Eh. Not like that.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Not worth it. Not worth it.
Tom: And then, uh, [00:51:00] finally for this segment, Nike and Lululemon have ended their Mirror patent lawsuit.
Crystal: Dude, I forgot this was happening.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: They- This, this has been going on- Maybe they
Tom: did too, and they were like, “Oh, we-” Oh,
Crystal: wait. You know what? This is still in the books. Like, oh. We should, like-
Tom: Girl, why am I even mad at you?
Crystal: That’s what happened. That’s
Tom: what happened?
Crystal: That’s what happened.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I
Tom: don’t know.
Tom: Let’s not. Okay. The end.
Crystal: Let, let’s cue a little Taylor Swift. I forgot that you existed.
Tom: Yeah.
Tom: So, uh, do we know, did somebody write a check to somebody or are they just like-
Crystal: Undisclosed …
Tom: drop it?
Crystal: Undisclosed terms, so we don’t know anything.
Tom: I guess Lululemon is like, “We don’t really give a shit about the Mirror anymore.”
Crystal: Yeah. For real. “
Tom: So why are we doing this?”
Crystal: Yeah. Yeah.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I don’t know.
Tom: it is time for the TCO Top Five. Uh, you have told us your favorite classes, and now here they is. Uh, number one, your favorite sprint intervals ride.
Crystal: Yes, this was [00:52:00] taught by Christine, and it was a 45-minute sprint interval training ride on… It was on September 20th. Uh, Cheryl Guralo said, “45-minute bike sprint intervals with Christine.
Crystal: Challenging, great music, encouragement from Christine, and a lot of sweat.” Can I also just say, I didn’t wanna just take over the Top Five with my own recommendations.
Tom: And yet, here we go.
Crystal: Well. I
Tom: just- You are Clip Out Crystal after all …
Crystal: I just wanted to say- Mm-hmm … that I took a Christine stack while I was there.
Crystal: It was 20 minutes of low impact, 20 minutes of sprint. It was delightful.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Christine is delightful. But it was like giving old days vibes.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: And, uh, and I celebrated my 900th in the low impact, so, like, there’s that.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: But it was just really, really fun, and I feel like Christine is, like, having this rec- I don’t know.
Crystal: There’s something happening with Christine. She is in a very happy place. There’s a lot of really good vibes going on. If you haven’t taken classes with her lately, I highly recommend, like, change it up. Revisit. These, you know, they’re people, [00:53:00] too. They go through- Yeah … they go through different stages. So I’m not saying you didn’t like her.
Crystal: Right. But, like, if you haven’t for a while, this is a new Christine.
Tom: It’s like with bands. Sometimes- It is … you’re kinda like, “You know what? I haven’t listened to the Gin Blossoms in quite some time.” And then you put on a Gin Blossoms record and you’re like, “Damn, that sounds good.”
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: That really hit the spot.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: Uh, number two, your favorite two for one ride.
Crystal: We’ve had this on before, but it’s a great one. Keeps coming up. It’s Samyo Dennis Morton. I told you it was gonna be epic.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: August 23rd, 30-minute two for one, and, uh, Patrick Priest took this, and he said he’s been doing multiple Dennis rides lately.
Crystal: He’s fun and keeps you on your toes. Turn it up.
Tom: Uh, number three, your favorite core class.
Crystal: Selena Samuela, she is in her core era.
Tom: Mm-hmm.
Crystal: And, uh, uh, this is another one that, like, if you haven’t taken classes with Selena, like, you need to change gears and take classes with Selena. This is a different Selena, and I’m so here for it.
Crystal: Yeah. Sarah Lester said, “I nominate Selena’s 10-minute core from 9/12. Since returning from maternity leave, Selena’s core [00:54:00] classes have been next level fabulous. She talks about the work she did after pregnancy to work on pelvic floor dysfunction, and she uses it in recent classes. This class really works the lower abs using a, a yoga block, and I’ve already done the class multiple times.
Crystal: Definitely worth working it into the stacks.” This one is from 9/12, but I’m telling you, take any of them. The… You will not regret.
Tom: Uh, number four, your favorite triathlon simulation.
Crystal: Okay, this happened live this last weekend. Matt Wilpers taught 30 minutes of row, ride, run, so technically this is three classes.
Tom: Mm-hmm.
Crystal: But, uh, people did them all as one. That was the whole point.
Tom: Okay. I’ll allow it.
Crystal: I feel like it was allowed. Yeah. Uh, I only showed the picture for one though, ’cause it’s too much work.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: But, uh, Cindy Bentz was the one who nominated this, and she said the triathlon was amazing. Matt was really was working alongside of us, and it was a challenge.
Crystal: This taught me any time I participate in an event, I enjoy myself, and I feel better about participating. Truly, everyone on the leaderboard had a great time. It was a lot of fun. The, uh, it was a cumulative leaderboard this year. [00:55:00] It was a blast. I have not heard one negative thing about it. So like if you haven’t taken it, go do it.
Crystal: It’s not too late. It’s not too late.
Tom: And I really hope Cindy Bentz, I hope her leaderboard name is Get Bentz.
Crystal: I don’t know, but it should be.
Tom: If not, it should be
Crystal: now. Change it, Cindy.
Tom: You’ve been ordered by Clip Out Crystal-
Crystal: No …
Tom: to change it.
Crystal: Clip Out Tom.
Tom: There is no Clip Out Tom.
Crystal: There is a Clip Out
Tom: Tom.
Tom: There’s Clip Out Crystal, and then there’s her sidekick. Uh, and triathlon at number four, if that’s not an unstackable, dear God, what must number five be? I’ll tell you because it’s my job. Favorite full body strength.
Crystal: Okay, so the reason I didn’t call the other one unstackable was because it is inherently a stack.
Crystal: It was 30 minutes of three classes, so I didn’t feel like that counted, ’cause this is one class.
Tom: I got logic-ed.
Crystal: You did.
Tom: Yeah. No, that makes total sense.
Crystal: Thank you.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: All right. Well, Angelie Chase is the one who nominated this class, and it was a 60-minute full body strength from Rad Lopez taught on September 19th.
Crystal: She said she loved the class. The music kept me [00:56:00] going, and my heart rate let me know that I was alive.
Tom: Well, I mean, your heart rate kind of always does that, doesn’t it?
Crystal: I guess it was up.
Tom: Till the, that very last- It
Crystal: was a reminder …
Tom: that last time.
Crystal: Jesus Christ. Dark.
Tom: What? So dark. Sorry, I thought you knew eventually our heart stopped.
Crystal: I didn’t. That’s brand new.
Tom: We’ve been to funerals together.
Crystal: Like what did you think was going on there? I didn’t know. I didn’t know.
Tom: There are new seated strength and cardio classes.
Crystal: Yes, um, and they appear to be adaptive in nature. I say that because they specifically said seated, and they included strength and cardio, and then they showed Logan. I can’t figure out how cardio is seated other than on a bike. So I’m curious about this- Right
Crystal: like genuinely.
Tom: Is it maybe like, well, it’s strength, so like, is y- like sit-
Crystal: Strength and cardio though. It’s like- Like sitting on a bench
Tom: doing some- like- But it’s strength and cardio. Oh, I see. Yeah. So I don’t, I, I don’t know. Like
Crystal: maybe. Yeah.
Crystal: Maybe that is. It was a li- l- the wording was a little weird. Yeah. I’m not gonna lie. Like we were confused. Yeah. Like half the people who read it thought it was like they just meant seated strength [00:57:00] and cardio.
Tom: Oh, I
Crystal: see. And then there were half of us that were like, “But no, it’s seated, and they’re showing someone seated, so it’s seated strength and it’s seated cardio.”
Tom: So- The importance of the Oxford comma.
Crystal: It is. I, I don’t know which it is because it’s not out yet. But keep your eye out for it- Yeah … and let us know.
Tom: Uh, Hannah Frankson has debuted her 135 ride
Crystal: This is really cool because, uh, we’re gonna be doing a deep dive in this, this week but this next week, so we’ll have an article for it.
Crystal: But it’s a live format, so you have one sustained effort, three progressive interval blocks, and then five high intensity pushes, and, uh, that sounds intense.
Tom: Mm-hmm.
Crystal: I’m excited about it ’cause I love new formats. Right. It’s kind of exciting, so can’t wait to hear how, how it goes.
Crystal: Elizabeth’s testing it, like, literally as we speak.
Tom: Oh.
Crystal: So we’ll know soon.
Tom: Jess Sims launches Do Hard Things. I mean, come on.
Crystal: I know. You said this last time. You’re still not over it. I’m not. You’re not over it. I’m
Tom: not.
Crystal: I don’t think you’re ever gonna be over it.
I
Tom: don’t think I will be.
Crystal: It’s a four-week live cross-training [00:58:00] program.
Crystal: I know, it’s not four weeks of live classes. I’m just telling you what the text says, okay? The, it, it, what it is is that it’s one week, four days of live classes. They all dropped live this week. Okay. And then you repeat it for four weeks. Okay. People took great offense- Mm … to that wording, but I mean, that’s what it said.
Crystal: Anyway, you repeat it and then at the end culminates in a s- live SIM 60. Jess Sims will not be teaching any live classes during this timeframe because she expects you to be focused on this program.
Tom: Okay.
Crystal: People are having issues with that as well. I’m just the messenger, man.
Tom: She’s given you your marching orders.
Crystal: Get to work.
Tom: That’s the way it’s gonna be.
Crystal: Do the hard thing.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: Plus, if you haven’t joined her Instagram channel where she tells you all the things, you absolutely are missing out ’cause she’s over here being hilarious. And she’s doing Instagram Lives. She was like, “Do people even do Instagram Lives anymore?
Crystal: Should I do an Instagram Live?” And everybody’s like, “Yes, duh.” And then she did one and it was crazy, so, like, you’re missing out. Get over there.
Tom: Finally, [00:59:00] Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month gets new classes plus a badge.
Crystal: Yes. All new classes, a brand-new badge for completing, and, and the Juanez Artist Series.
Tom: Oh.
Crystal: So it’s a big month. Make sure you check it out. Get all the things, especially if you track badges. This is your time.
Tom: and finally, we have two birthdays this week. Hines on September 27th, and Leanne Haynes Bialdis on September 28th.
Tom: So-
Crystal: Dude …
Tom: happy birthday.
Crystal: Happy birthday to both, but I had genuinely forgotten Tobias. Like, I haven’t heard his name in so long. Yeah. Like, where did he go? I don’t know. We’re gonna have to do some digging.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I need to know what’s going on.
Tom: Is he okay? He’s ver- has been very-
Crystal: Well, I think he was always kind of quiet.
Crystal: Yeah. Like, I don’t think he was the most out there instructor. Yeah. But, uh, but he’s been quiet, yes. Like, I don’t think anything nefarious or bad or- Right … negative or anything like that. But yeah, I, I just don’t think he’s the most, like, look at me person.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: I think he’s the opposite of look at me.
Tom: [01:00:00] But, like, normally, like, the, the, l- nor- there’s like, oh, this person has a new class.
Tom: It pops up on our radar- It does … and we haven’t even seen that.
Crystal: No, not for over a year. So I, I’m, I’m gonna have to do some digging. I’m curious.
Tom: Yeah. So that brings this episode to a close. Until next week, where can people find you?
Crystal: People can find me on Facebook at facebook.com/crystaldoekeefe. They can find me on Instagram, Threads, and Blue Sky, and of course, the Peloton Leaderboard @ClipOutCrystal.

Tom: There’s been a lot to talk about.
Crystal: Yes.
Tom: There’s still more to talk about.
Crystal: Yeah.
Tom: If you’ve made it this far, ’cause this is far, you want more of us.
Crystal: Dude, I know it’s hard to believe, but, like, we barely scratched the surface of the New York trip.
Tom: Yeah.
Crystal: So.
Tom: So that’s already over there waiting for you on the Patreon, and of course, the bonus episode that’s yet to be recorded, and just a whole [01:01:00] bunch that have already been recorded just sitting there.
