Matt Wilpers Raced the Legendz HYROX Miami Beach Event in the Open Doubles Division and Finished with a Time Worth Celebrating

Matt Wilpers HYROX Miami Beach debut is official, and the results speak for themselves. He and his Open Doubles partner Eric Rivera (IG @fitnessphenom21) are true “Legendz!”

Their official finish time was 1:03:06, placing them 40th overall among men’s doubles teams and 9th in their 35-39 age group. Matt summed it up on Instagram: “Solid 103 baby!”

Eric and Matt posted competitive splits across all eight functional workout stations, including a 3:59 on the 1000m SkiErg, a 2:21 on the 80m Burpee Broad Jump (77th in that station), and a 4:21 Roxzone that ranked 17th overall. Their combined run total of 33:09 also ranked 17th, with a best run lap of 3:41. That running performance is no accident.

The Clip Out’s Helper Bee Lisa, who recently competed in HYROX DC and is currently training for The Great World Race, shares these insights:

That is a very competitive time! They are within striking distance of Elite times, which are typically just at or under 60 minutes. Basically, Matt and his partner are already posting “competitive” times versus beginners. I would also guess/say his overall endurance for distance events, particularly the longer triathalons and running marathon distances, has helped him prepare and pace himself for a HYROX event. He has also recently been emphasizing the importance of strength training, and this is a big part of the HYROX races. His skill and technique with the row surely helped too!
As a side note… at the HYROX event Andy Speer had that I attended (in DC) one of the questions someone asked was who would he pick as a relay HYROX team and he picked Matt as one of them, saying the run is where it’s at! Their run time was 33:09, which is under 6:40 per mile! They were flying. I would have loved to watch him… it probably looked effortless and he was probably smiling the whole time.
HYROX is a standardized global fitness race that combines running with functional workout stations. Each event follows the same structure: a 1-kilometer run followed by a functional station, repeated eight times. The stations include the ski erg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer’s carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls. The Doubles format splits the functional work between two athletes, though both run each 1k segment.

A Race Resume Built Over Years

Matt competed as an NCAA Division I distance runner at Georgia State University and has since completed Ironman-distance triathlons. He is a 2:54 marathoner, a 1:17 half marathoner, and a 10:38 Ironman triathlete. That is a serious multi-sport background built over many years of structured, goal-oriented racing.

He prepared for and raced the Gran Fondo Hincapie, a challenging 100-mile cycling race in the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina, even documenting his preparation in a short film called “The Ride.” He ran and finished the Boston Marathon with a time of 3:11:40, a race he had been working toward for years, with injuries and COVID previously blocking his path despite qualifying twice.

His 2026 calendar has already been packed: he led a free Peloton shakeout run in NYC on March 14 ahead of the 2026 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon, which he also ran, and is set to run the London Marathon later this year. In May he will ride around New York in the 5 Boro Bike Tour. The Matt Wilpers HYROX Miami Beach debut was simply the next event on a very deliberate list. And in true Matt fashion, he announced his HYROX Miami entry live during a March 14 ride, just one day before the NYC Half Marathon.

Why He Keeps Signing Up for New Things

If you know Matt, you know he doesn’t “just” workout, and he doesn’t train for random races. He trains with a goal, and usually has multiple goals within a year. This approach to framing one’s fitness is a prime example of one of Peloton’s most beloved coaches practicing what he preaches. And then he brings us all along!

His core message is that structured goals, such as having a race date on the calendar, are what turn training workouts from abstract to actionable. To paraphrase one of his aphorisms, “a plan without a goal is just a wish.” He infuses this in all his coaching, from Peloton to Team Wilpers.

He Practices What He Coaches

Matt is one of 12 instructors who contributed to Peloton’s 12-week HYROX Training Program, which Robin Arzon and Andy Speer co-lead. His role in the program focused on the running component, a natural fit given his background. He also contributes strength content to the Road to 26.2 marathon training program and the Road to Half Marathon collection.

He does not build programs for others and stop there. He races the formats himself. That is what gives his coaching credibility and keeps his community so engaged. When Matt tells members to set a goal, pick a race, and commit, he is speaking from experience. The Matt Wilpers HYROX result from Miami Beach is a concrete data point in a long record of doing exactly that.

What’s your next goal or race? Is HYROX in your future?
