Who is INXS?

Let’s talk about the legends behind the music. Hailing from Sydney, Australia, INXS dominated the airwaves with a unique sound that blended new wave, pop, and funk rock. Fronted by the charismatic Michael Hutchence, the band became global superstars, selling over 75 million records worldwide. Their music isn’t just catchy; it’s driven by iconic guitar riffs, sax solos, and rhythms that make it impossible to stay still.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About INXS (Unless You’re a Fan) 😅

Even die-hard fans might miss a few details about this iconic group. Here are five facts to drop in the pre-show chat before you ride:

  • The Name Game: Before settling on INXS, the band was known as The Farriss Brothers. The name change was suggested by a record label employee who thought “INXS” sounded cool and modern, inspired by the English band XTC and Australian jam makers IXL.
  • Sax Appeal: Unlike most rock bands of the era, INXS heavily featured the saxophone, played by Kirk Pengilly. It gave their tracks a distinct, funky edge that set them apart from standard guitar heavy rock.
  • Video Stars: Their hit “Need You Tonight” won five MTV Video Music Awards in 1988, including Video of the Year. It is still one of the most recognizable music videos in history.
  • Unexpected Inspiration: The iconic rhythm for “Need You Tonight” was reportedly written by Andrew Farriss while he was waiting for a cab to the airport. He told the driver to wait while he quickly recorded the riff, almost missing his flight to Hong Kong.
  • A Massive Audience: In 1991, they played to a sold-out crowd of over 72,000 people at Wembley Stadium in London. That concert, “Live Baby Live,” is often cited as one of the greatest live rock performances ever captured on film.

Why The INXS Artist Series Is “What You Need”

You might be asking, “Why an INXS artist series? Why now?” The answer is simple. INXS music is perfectly engineered for movement. It has a driving beat that pushes cadence, a swagger that encourages heavier resistance, and a soulful vibe that fits perfectly into a yoga flow.

Here is why you should add these classes to your stack immediately:

  • The rhythm is undeniable: The funk rock fusion creates a natural pedal stroke. You won’t have to fight for the beat; it’s right there waiting for you. If you’ve taken a bunch of Power Zone rides, you already know this.
  • Nostalgia with an edge: It’s not just cheesy 80s pop. It’s gritty, sexy, and cool. It brings a different energy to the Bike and Tread than your standard pop ride.
  • Instructor pairing perfection: Look at who is teaching. Ben Alldis for the Ride? Andy Speer for Strength? These instructors know how to leverage rock music to squeeze out that extra rep. The notable exception is Matt Wilpers, who infamously mispronounced their name!
  • Variety of modalities: Whether you run, ride, lift, or flow, there is a class for you. You can literally spend your entire workout week with INXS.
