Grief and Loss: Dr. Jenn’s Advice on Coping with the Loss of a Loved One
Dr. Jenn Mann recently discussed some helpful tips for dealing with grief and loss on The Clip Out podcast, episode 345. Dr. Jenn knows firsthand the difficulties of coping with the death of a loved one, having lost her own mother in June. During the interview, she shared her insights and provided suggestions for those struggling with similar experiences.
The Importance of Exercise for Your Mood
Dr. Jenn emphasized the importance of exercise for one’s mental and emotional health. While it may take more energy to start a workout after losing a loved one, the benefits of exercise are crucial for managing grief and depression. Getting some serotonin and a sense of accomplishment from exercise can help improve your mood and give you a much-needed boost of energy.
Coping with the Stages of Grief and Loss
Dr. Jenn also spoke about the different stages of grief and loss, as outlined by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. These stages – including denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance – can occur in any order and often overlap. By understanding and accepting these stages, we can better manage our emotions and give ourselves the space to grieve.
Self-Care and Surrounding Yourself with Supportive People
Another important aspect of coping with grief is self-care. Dr. Jenn recommended finding ways to center yourself and be in touch with your emotions, such as taking baths or burning candles. She also suggested talking to other family members or friends who knew and loved the person you lost. Being open and honest about your feelings can help you find the support and comfort you need during this difficult time.
Seek Help from a Therapist or Grief Support Group
Lastly, Dr. Jenn encouraged seeking help from a therapist or grief support group. Having someone to talk to and a safe space to share your emotions can make a world of difference. It’s important to give yourself permission to grieve and to take the necessary steps to heal.
By taking care of ourselves, seeking support, and understanding the stages of grief, we can begin to navigate the difficult journey of healing after losing a loved one. And listen to the podcast, and more insights from Dr. Jenn, here.
