Are 3rd Party Apps Like Power Zone Pack Causing Problems For Peloton? Plus Our Interview With Keely Wisbey

We are back from Dallas.

We are. What a trip.

Those were good times. We got to hang out with a couple of our listeners while we were there. That was fun.

We hung out with Beth and Raven, both of whom live right in Dallas. That was fun to be able to meet them. Beth is an OG and she has been around since 2014. She joined the original Peloton page the day it started.

She said that when she joined the OPP, there were 70 people on it.

That’s an OG right there. Mid-OG Raven joined in 2018, which for today’s standards is OG.

I feel like a lot of people think that anything pre-pandemic is OG now. That’s not true, but to the pandemic joiners, it is.

Both ladies were awesome and we had so much fun talking to them. If you get a chance, I would like for you to randomly send pictures to Beth of Chris Isaak. She’ll get a kick out of that.

She loves Chris Isaak.

There was squealing of epic proportions. I thought I was the only one who squeal like that.

She was talking about how much she loved Chris Isaak. I pulled up a picture and I was like, “Here’s the time I met Chris Isaak.” She was like, “I have to have that picture.” I’m like, “You’re not in it.”

I think you forgot the part where she squeal.

I can’t replicate that. It’s a lot of fun. Thanks for coming and hanging out. That was a nice way to wrap up our week. We should probably also address a bad way to wrap up our week.

I think most of you have read what’s going on with John Mills. If you have it, I will say that he has experienced the crappiest roller coaster of a week possible for a human being, the whole family has. They are up in the air not knowing which way is up right now.

We’re not going to get into it, not because we don’t care, but because we don’t feel like it’s our place to tell that story. What information is out there, you can find it in an older post in our group or in Run, Lift and Live. It’s also over there. Feel free to go over there if you haven’t yet. He is not with us for this episode. We hope we have him back when he is ready.

He gets to take all the time he needs and got some processing to do. We love him and we love Erica and the whole family. I wish we could do more than send good thoughts because they sure need them.

Just a little housecleaning stuff. We should probably talk about Pedal The Cause.

September 24th, locally, we have Pedal The Cause. You guys might remember the doctor we had on a few months ago, who’s here in St. Louis. He also raises money for Pedal The Cause. All of the money that is raised for Pedal The Cause stays right here in St. Louis and goes directly to Siteman Cancer Research. It is an incredible organization. It has done so much good. You guys might also remember that we had the amazing cancer survivor Teri Griege on. She was on a couple of years ago. I will always remember the fact how much she astounded me by the fact that she completed Ironman Kona while on chemotherapy.

That’s crazy.

I don’t think that I could do it without being on chemo. I’m not sure that I could do it. She not only did it, but she did it while she was on chemo.

In case anyone is wondering, I know I can’t do it.

She has raised so much money for Pedal The Cause. She has her own team, which I am proud to be part of, called Powered By Hope. Since we are going to be in New York on September 24th, 2022, my hope was that maybe everybody could donate. When I ride in the studio, I will wear my Powered By Hope Jersey in the studio, then we can bring a little bit of Pedal The Cause to New York. I thought that might be a fun way to handle it. Go to The Clip Out group and you can find the link there, or you can go to my personal Facebook page at Crystal D O’Keeffe. Either one has the link to donate but I would sure appreciate it. Thank you very much.

Finally, a friendly reminder that if you love the Yacht Rock, the sail on Clip Out meetup group is coming up, which is October 15th. It will be at the family arena if you live in the Midwest or if you want to fly, we’ll allow that too. We’ve got a suite. There will be some food and beverage, and you get to see bands like Firefall, Orleans, The Babies, Peter Beckett from Player and Walter Egan. It’s a night jam-packed with Yacht Rock classics from beginning to end, and we will have fun. There will be beverages both adult and otherwise. Come and hang out with us. What pray tell do you have in store for people?

We are going to talk about what is happening with all these password reset emails. We have all the details for you. If you’re like, “What is going on?” we got you. We are going to also talk about the end of an era at West 23rd. We also have a ton of general Peloton news. We have lawsuit updates. We have a visit from Dr. Jenn, talking about keeping your motivation up even when you’re feeling sad, and tons of updates from the instructors. We also have a visit from Angelo, eating right whenever you have to exercise less like maybe after surgery. There’s some competitor news. There’s a whole bunch of stuff going in In Case You Missed It. We got lots.

Before we get to all that, shameless plugs, don’t forget we’re available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, iHeart, TuneIn, Stitcher. Wherever you find a podcast, you can find us. While you’re there, b sure and follow us so you never missed an episode. Maybe leave us a review. That’s always helpful. You can also find us on Facebook, Facebook.com/TheClipOut. While you’re there, like the page, join the group.

You can find us also on YouTube, YouTube.com/TheClipOut, where you can watch these episodes. If you want add-free content or bonus episodes with extra content, you can sign up for that at Patreon.com/TheClipOut. For as little as $5 a month, you get ad-free content for a little bit more. You get the bonus episodes, like the one we’ve already released explaining Power Zone.  You’ll get that now if you don’t want to do that. There’s all of that. Let’s dig in. Shall we?

We shall.

Lots of people have been getting emails, which is asking you to reset your password due to suspicious activity.

I want to start off by saying nobody did anything wrong. To my knowledge, there is no actual data breach.

Unless you actually had a suspicious activity that’s unrelated to what we’re about to talk about.

This is specific.

There could still theoretically be people out there in isolated situations having issues that are unrelated to this. There has been a large swath of people getting this email and trying to figure out what the common denominator is. Thus far, it seems like the common denominator is the Power Zone pack, specifically people who are using the app.

It’s all an app. Anybody who’s using the Power Zone pack, here’s the thing. It’s not about the Power Zone pack specifically. What we think it’s about is the way Power Zone pack is structured architecturally, it’s all web cloud-based apps. If you’re using anything like an iPad, a phone, etc. to log in, what happens is that it’s pinging to different servers like different ISP addresses that call Peloton on your behalf.

Let’s say you are sitting on your bike, so you’re logged into your Peloton account, and then you pull up the Power Zone pack, and you want to see what the rides are looking like today. Maybe you’re following along. Now, there’s a different IP address calling Peloton on your behalf, but it’s using your login. To Peloton, it looks like you were logged-in in two different locations and you are using the same device simultaneously in two different places.

That is important for us to understand because if you were to be using an app on your phone like in Paceline, for example, that is an app that you own. When you use your phone, your computer and your bike, all of those still show that it’s coming from your home. The reason we think it is specifically showing up for the Power Zone pack is because they started a new challenge, and Peloton just made changes and it happened to coincide. The reason Paceline is not seeing it is because they’re an app. It’s not showing as a different location. It is showing as one location. Your home.

It operates on a different premise.

It’s a totally different architecture, an app versus a cloud-based application.

Neither is right nor wrong. They’re just choices made by designers.

If you’re listening and you’re like, “Why is Tom saying that?’ There was a whole bunch of drama between us Power Zone pack and Paceline back in the day. Everyone has let it go to my knowledge, but we want to be careful. We’re not picking on anybody. What we’re actually trying to say is Power Zone pack did nothing wrong. That’s the whole point of this. They did everything they had been doing. Nothing changed on their end. What we think happened is that Peloton changed its security. We could debate all day why they changed their security. Are they updating it? Is it because they’re a publicly traded company and they need to do security upgrades every once in a while?

Is it the Netflix guys being like, “Don’t share passwords, people?” This looks like that. This is not what this does.

To Peloton’s eyes, it looks like that. It looks like you’re sharing passwords. If that’s the case, I don’t know how it’s going to get resolved. In theory, if it’s as simple as Peloton updated their security and didn’t know it was going to affect Power Zone pack, one thing they could do is white list the IP addresses that Power Zone pack is using. However, they may not be comfortable with that because that would mean that anything Power Zone pack sends over, Peloton sees it as non-threatening, no matter what it is.

That’s a lot of faith to put in a third party.

Who knows what they’re going to decide? I have no idea what the resolution is going to be. If they said white list it, that would be the end of it. When I have worked for companies that have had to white list IP addresses, it has been a whole thing. There had to be promises written and NDAs signed. There was also insurance provided. It’s a whole thing. I want to reiterate though, because I have seen so many people saying that it’s a data breach, that it does not look like a data breach.

At this point in time, the best we can tell is this does not appear to be a data breach. You’re fine. It’s just this thing is triggering Peloton to think that it might have occurred so it’s doing the protocols that take place when they think that’s occurred.

I want to say one other thing about this too. There are people that are not part of the Power Zone pack that are seeing this. We use the Power Zone pack as an example because they started their challenge and there are a lot of users that do participate in the challenge. That is why we are seeing a large number of posts. However, there are other third-party apps out there that are web-based and cloud-based just like the Power Zone pack is. If you belong to one of those, it is very possible that you are still getting this email even though you don’t belong to the Power Zone pack. As Toms said earlier, you also could genuinely have suspicious activity.

That could still be the thing triggering it. It seems less likely in the current climate, but if you don’t feel like you have any of these third-party apps, don’t just think you’re unaffected. If you get one of these, go do something.

A Peloton bike doesn't take as much room as a Peloton treadmill. Share on X

One other thing I want to say is that you cannot just ignore this email and know it is not spam. If you ignore the email, it will log you out of everything. You can ignore it, but you will not be able to get back into your devices until you reset them. That’s why you don’t want to do that. Also, somebody pointed out over on The Clip Out group that there are new terms and services updated on August 11th. One of the points that are in the terms and services says that Peloton is no longer going to be allowing you to use a third party.

All of this information that we got about architecture and such was talking to the mPaceline team. This was speculation on their part about how their architecture differs from the Power Zone pack, but it’s their understanding. Paceline also has done some research about the terms and services, and they are unable to find where this did not exist. It is a boilerplate. Most companies say it, regardless of whether or not they enforce it. Is Peloton starting to enforce it? It’s a question mark. We don’t know the answer to that. At this time, we are all making the assumption. It was a simple innocent change that they did not realize was going to affect the Power Zone pack.

In closing, we did reach out to the Power Zone pack for comments. As of the recording time, they had not replied.

I had given them 4:00 PM Central Time, and they didn’t even read it. Who knows? Maybe their email doesn’t work anymore. I have no idea. At any rate, we did try.

Watch this space. As more details are made available, we will let you know if it has been fixed, if it has gotten worse, or if there’s a workaround. We will be more than happy to share that with you. It’s the end of an era for Peloton.

This is the old West 23rd Peloton location, the original where it all started.

If you did an in-studio ride pre-pandemic, this is where you would have gone. They took down the sign. It no longer says Peloton.

It breaks my heart to see it like that. It’s so wrong.

Here’s a way to look at it through a positive prism. Look where they move to. This isn’t like they had to contract and give up something. They moved to something way bigger and way cooler with more studios and more equipment. Ultimately, it’s a sign of growth and that’s a good thing. We should give credit to Randi. She posted this in the JSS Trek.

Thank you for posting, Randi.

The New York Times had an article explaining why Peloton is now available on Amazon.

When you read the article, what it says is there are a lot of companies out there including Peloton that started their businesses by selling direct to customers. Now they are changing up the game. What I thought was interesting about this is Peloton is getting a lot of heat for it and a lot of attention for making that change and moving over to Amazon, but there are Casper and Purple Mattress. Greg or Mr. C, who came to visit us in St. Louis, told me that Cartier is showing up on Walmart.com. If Cartier can show up on Walmart.com, then Peloton can sell on Amazon. That’s where we are today.

Do people who want Cartier go to Walmart?

I don’t know but I think the larger point is that everyone out there is making these changes because they want to be where the people are. If people are on Amazon searching for Peloton, then why would you not bring it to them when you’re already hurting?

Peloton has delayed its annual 10K report. I have no idea what that means.

There are reports that have to be filed promptly whenever you are a publicly traded company, and one of them is a 10K report. It’s like all the detailed financials of how they got to where they got with their shareholder report. The shareholder report has to be filed on time, and then you’ve got your 10Ks. There’s a whole bunch of them that have to be done. They’re saying, “We don’t have the oversight the way we want it, so we’re making sure that all the changes that we made are properly accounted for in the 10K.” I don’t think this is that big of a deal. It’s the responsible thing. What are people upset about like, “You waited to make sure it was right? How dare you.” I don’t get the vitriol about this.

I didn’t know you could do that. Could I have done that in school? “I’m sorry, Mr. Seeger. I know my paper was due today, but I don’t feel like I have the right oversight implemented. I will be turning that in forthwith.”

A better analogy would be your tax returns. You could file an extension. If you’re like, “I didn’t get that done on April 15th. I didn’t do it,” you file an extension. It’s not that big of a deal. That would be preferred to not file your taxes.

That is frowned upon unless you’re rich.

I’m back to I don’t get why this is so upsetting to so many people.

It’s fun to be mad at Peloton. Come on in, the water is fine. Michelle K is back.

Not only is she back, but she was also there. What I mean by that is she traveled all the way to New York. She went to the grand studio opening on my birthday weekend. I’m just saying Michelle, you could have at least invited me. You got to go there. You got to have a big thing with Self magazine where they videoed you but it was my birthday. What’s up with that? In all seriousness though, Self magazine followed her there and then they did a whole video. They documented the entire opening. The whole article is about why these super fans traveled hundreds of miles to ride in person when they already own the bike at home. We know why that is because we’ve been writing for years. It’s because we all love each other and the instructors.

We know so much. We don’t even ask the question anymore.

TCO 274 | Consistent Working Out

Michelle got to hang out with pretty much all of the instructors. They gave her a VIP backstage pass. She got to meet everybody. She got to hang out. I talked to her and she said she was texting with Mariana. They’re all besties now, but she had a wonderful time. The best part was she probably would have gone anyway, but she had to go and call to work. She kept getting additional interviews so she kept getting to stay longer than she expected. Not only is the article delightful and you should check it out, but check out Self’s video. If you didn’t follow Michelle Kay on social media, you should because you get behind-the-scenes glimpses of what’s happening as well. She had a marvelous time.

She probably banked content for ten more articles.

I bet she did. What else are we looking forward to, Michelle? Maybe you could contact us and give us a little peek into the future.

Tom’s Guide has an article, I’ve owned a Peloton for a month and it’s helped reduce my anxiety.

I believe that because I think that any kind of endorphins helps with your anxiety. I’ll be honest, I didn’t read this. Did you read it?

No.

Could you scroll so I could get a quick glimpse? It boosted her mood, which that’s the endorphins. It helped her reframe her goals, which if you’ve ever talked to a Peloton instructor, they do that. Their power is in their instructors. I agree with all those things. She also called us a cult. As I like to say, it’s the healthiest cult round. There’s not a better cult you can join, in my opinion. If you’re going to join one, this is the one to join. I guess Cody helped her get out of her funk. I hear that a lot.

Reuters is reporting that Peloton has persuaded a US judge to send the sales tax lawsuit into arbitration.

This was like all that sales tax stuff a while back where they felt like some states weren’t charging it correctly or they were charging it but they shouldn’t have been charging it. Now they’re going to go into arbitration, which is good because that’s what arbitration is there for it. Let’s try to figure out how to come to a resolution without all the lawyers getting all the money and everyone else pays.

I feel pretty confident in saying, lawyers are still going to get money.

Once you started that process.

Joining us once again is Dr. Jenn Mann, licensed marriage, family and child therapist, and Sports Psychology consultant. You may know her from VH1’s Couples Therapy with Dr. Jenn or VH1’s Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn. Let me just interject to say how much I miss those shows.

I do too.

I would love to do it now. They were the joy of my life.

They were so fun to watch but also educational.

One of the cool things is that it was very not produced. It was very real, everything that was happening. We had a rule on set that no producer was ever allowed to coach anyone or tell anyone what to say. It was an amazing authentic therapy experience.

It felt it because before we knew you, we had watched other shows that do something similar. You could tell the difference if you A/B tested those things. When we would flip to yours, it was like, “This felt real.” We now return you to your introduction already in progress, or her long-running radio show, The Dr. Jenn Show. She’s written four bestselling books including The Relationship Fix: Dr. Jenn’s 6-Step Guide to Improving Communication, Connection and Intimacy. It’s Dr. Jenn.

Hello.

Erin Johnson has a question for you. She is looking for help to be motivated while she is sad. She’s doing low impact for a little bit and she’s struggling to stay moving. She doesn’t talk about why she’s sad. I’m not sure where that’s coming from but clearly, she got something that’s weighing on her.

First of all, I encourage her to get therapy to deal with whatever it is that is weighing on her because that is the best place to bring the sadness and explore it and help her heal. If there’s something that you need to grieve, whether it is a person, a relationship, an idea, a passion, a health issue, or whatever it is in your life, that grieving is typically part of what goes along with sad. I think the first thing is to allow yourself to cry in your workouts. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken a class and been moved to tears or been going through something heavy or painful and I’m using the bike to let it out.

I want to also emphasize that it does not replace therapy. As you’ve seen on the sign I post on my gym door, Peloton is therapeutic but it does not take the place of therapy. That’s an important thing to know. The second thing is if you are in a sad place in your life but you want to be using a workout, be gentle. It’s time to do a different bunch of workouts. Maybe it’s a little more low-impact rides. There’s a whole series on Peloton, the feelings series. I don’t know what the proper name is, but they are ones about being sad.

Moods.

Everybody in the Peloton community is so positive. Share on X

The mood ones. Thank you. There are specific rides and classes about being sad. I think that you got to embrace it that that’s where you’re at. Let yourself get it out and also be gentle with yourself. Even if you make a plan to do a workout and you’re too sad to do it, do your best to start it. Once you get to start it and you’re like, “I’m not up for it,” then give yourself a break. There are times in our life when we need to sit and cry. Sometimes it’s not on the bike. There are plenty of times when it is on the bike. I speak from firsthand experience, but I think that it’s getting into their selves and getting the support that you need right now. That’s key.

That’s a good point. I remember when I was going through my divorce and I went to see my doctor because I had to get an STD test. He was trying to write me a prescription for antidepressants. I was like, “I think I’m good.” I’m supposed to not be in a great mood right now. Maybe in 6 or 8 months, if I still feel that way and it’s not going away, but I don’t know that I should be covering that up just yet.

I always say that talk therapy is the first line of defense. That’s where you want to go first. If you’re so sad or you’re so anxious or whatever that you can’t participate in a meaningful way and talk therapy, then it’s time to see a psychiatrist. One thing I want to emphasize, and this is something I feel very strongly about that most people who are not in my business don’t realize, see a psychiatrist. Don’t go to your general practitioner. Don’t go to your gynecologist. Don’t ask another doctor.

You want to have a psychiatrist manage psychotropic medication. If you’re thinking about going on an antidepressant or anti-anxiety, you want a person who is an expert. You don’t go to your cardiologist if you’re having pulmonary issues. You don’t go to your gynecologist if you’re going to get a facelift. You go to the doctor who that is what they do, that is what they study, and that is their expertise in order to get the best care possible.

I’ve seen way too many people. They’re well-meaning physicians. They’re internists who say, “My patient is sad. I’ll give them some Prozac,” or whatever. It needs to be monitored. It needs to be watched. It needs to be accompanied by therapy. Any side effects need to be monitored. I don’t see people getting the same level of care from other kinds of doctors who are not experts.

That makes sense. Don’t get a prostate exam from a dentist again. If you do make sure they wash their hands. On that note, thank you for joining us. Until next time, where can people find you?

On all social media, especially Instagram, @DrJennMann. I post all of my Peloton workouts on my Insta Stories. You can also find me in InStyle magazine. They have an online magazine now. They’re no longer on paper. You can find my column there. It’s called Hump Day With Dr. Jenn and it’s all sex and relationship advice.

Some sad news regarding Logan Aldridge. His dog has cancer.

Stella has advance-stage osteosarcoma, which is bone cancer in her lungs and legs.

That sucks.

She’s such a pretty puppy.

Have you ever seen a dog where you’re like, “That dog is ugly?”

Sadly, yes.

I feel like I’ve never heard you say it. Every dog, you’re like, “That dog is amazing.”

It’s rare but look at those eyes and sweet face.

We’re hoping that your dog gets well, fingers crossed. While we’re talking about Logan, he was featured in ASweatLife.com.

They talked to him about adaptive fitness, which makes sense because that’s his specialty. He told his story about the accident where he lost his arm. He talks about how he started approaching everything like, “How would I do this if I only had one arm?” I still can’t believe the things that he can do. It’s amazing, like the push-ups and the pull-ups. It’s not just a matter of putting some extra piece of equipment in there. It’s also that he does it in a way that he’s not scared of getting hurt.

He’s like, “What else can I do?” He keeps pushing his own boundaries, which I find very inspirational. He talks about what it’s like being an adaptive instructor and how anybody out there can get started with adaptive fitness, where you start, and what kind of classes you should be looking for. If you haven’t gotten a chance to read that, please be sure and check it out.

You can get it through our awesome newsletter that you can sign up for at theclipout.com. Chelsea Jackson Roberts was featured on the website, Mama Disrupt.

She was a guest editor. She talked about how to continue to be active even while you’re pregnant.

What would she know about that?

I’m thinking of a few things, but I like that. Robin did the same thing when she was pregnant and talked about how you need to listen to your body. Chelsea is coming at it from a different angle but also talking about how it’s important to be active and listen to your body and do what feels good. The world has changed so much in almost 16 years. When I had my daughter, there was nobody encouraging me to workout back then. I’m not saying that nobody did, but it wasn’t something that was discussed during any of my doctor appointment.

When I was growing up, if a woman workout while she was pregnant, it was like you might as well smoke and have a beer while you’re at it. They thought it was too much for the baby. It’s interesting how much people have done a 180 on that.

TCO 274 | Consistent Working Out

If you’ve never workout and gone from never working out to going into running, don’t do that. Talk to your doctor and figure out what’s appropriate for you. If you have been working out, unless you have a high-risk pregnancy or some medical condition that keeps you from doing so, you should be able to continue to workout, which is cool.

While we’re talking about Chelsea, she was on Fox 32 Chicago.

This was a fascinating news piece. It’s the benefits of yoga in healing past trauma. I never thought about how yoga could help with that. I suppose that anything that takes you to a meditative place and takes you out of your head can help with trauma. Whether that’s meditation or yoga movement and the breadth around that, I’m all for it though. Either way, that’s amazing. It’s almost like getting therapy but with movement and without a therapist.

Callie Gullickson was featured on the Hurdle podcast.

She sure was. If you want to check it out, there you go.

Finally, for this segment, Kirsten Ferguson and Marcel Dinkins are both celebrating one year at Peloton.

They both had their Peloversary. Remember back when I first started on the bike and nobody used the word Peloversary, except the very adamant few of us? Now the instructors are using Peloersary. What a very far distance we have come. Congrats to Kirsten and Marcel. It’s very exciting to have you both here. I can’t believe it has been a year. It’s a year for Daniel coming up too.

I don’t have an image for this but I wanted to update everybody. Christine D’Ercole has been preparing to go to the world championship. She announced that just before she was ready to go and she was at her last training race of the season, it ended in a spill. She said she was fine, but she has taken a little RNR. What she took away from that was she has to pivot and that’s important to do. What she was going to do after was a road to race day challenge.

Now she is going to post recovery and rebuild plan to help practice patience, restraint, curiosity instead of judgment, and trusting the process. She listed several classes that you could take along with her. I figure there are a lot of us that might need some recovery from a multitude of things. It might be something that you’re in the market for and I wanted to point it out. I’m sorry that you couldn’t go Christine, but we love you and we have our hands on your back.

Joining us once again from MetPro here to answer all of your nutrition questions, it’s Angelo.

Thanks for having me back.

Thank you for being here. I’m wondering if you can help Anna Maximo. She says that she is specifically looking for some ideas on how to eat after a hip labral tear surgery, so any surgery. You could fill in the blank. Anna says that she currently works out hard five days a week. She has two days of active recovery and her nutrition is good, but she’s concerned that after the surgery, her exercise routine is going to change and she won’t be able to do yoga, cardio or even leg strength for a while. She’s concerned about gaining weight.

I thought at first she was asking, “What should I eat to heal the hip?” There’s some good stuff there. The context here is because she had hip surgery, she’s going to be less active so she’s trying to figure it out basically. The piece of data that we’re missing, Anna, is what you’re currently eating. That way, we could figure out specifically, “Here would be the optimal areas to decrease.”

I want to say this. You don’t have to decrease perhaps as much as you think. You may want to decrease but don’t over-correct in this scenario. A small reduction will be adequate. You’re not going to be down long. Lots of my clients and friends and family have gone through hip surgeries. You’re going to be back on your feet, shimmying, dancing, and doing all your stuff and no time. The metabolic hit from a few weeks is not massive, and there will be some weeks of lower-intensity movement.

What you’re looking for is a priority hierarchy. My basic advice is to eat frequently to help keep that metabolic rate recovery and the anabolic state as much as you can versus skipping. In order to reduce the amount of intake, don’t reduce fueling frequency. Reduce a little bit the volume at each meal and/or snack. It’s tough because I don’t know your personal nutrition culture and history right now. Here is the order that I would do it in. If there are outliers and excesses, and we can take sugar or alcohol, that’s where I want it to come off first. I know you’re saying, “Thanks, Angelo, duh.” Even if you can make some small strides, it will contribute.

Once we move beyond that, then you want to look at things that we would classify as greasy fried foods or junk foods, and things that are the obvious outliers. Decrease those. I’m going to assume you’ve been listening to the show for a while. You already have those basics. What’s next? The order that you would do it in his protein gets reduced last. If there is an excess of fats, you might go for that first. Assuming that you’re not eating excesses of fats, then what you’re going to want to do is keep a baseline of fat and start reducing carbohydrates from approximately the end of your day back.

If you can lighten the second half, maybe after 3:00 or 4:00, if you can reel back a little bit on the carbohydrates, that would be the first stop that I would make. The second stop would then evenly reduce carbohydrates from breakfast to call it your afternoon snack. Start gradually reducing evenly across those meals as needed. Assuming you have not previously been restricting carbohydrates, don’t start doing so to a drastic degree. You want that fuel. You want that energy. Carbohydrates tend to be muscle-sparing because your body uses that for energy, freeing up the amino acids and protein as the building blocks for muscle repair.

Muscle repair right now is important for you after a hip surgery. No knee-jerk reactions, but that’s the order you want to do it in. Junk food, particularly sugar and alcohol first. The second thing is if there is an excess of fats and we could say an excess of calories is an easy place to cut from, and the third is going to be we’re already eating clean. Everything is fairly balanced, start pulling it back with the carbohydrates starting from the end of the day and working back. That’s the priority hierarchy I would encourage you to adopt.

That’s very good advice, very sensible.

Especially with the knee-jerk reactions because she just had her hip worked on. It could be a dangerous position. Thank you so much for all of that. Until next time, if people would like this sort of stuff with specificity for their lives, where can they find you?

Thanks, Angelo.

The New York Post is reporting that top execs of NordicTrack are fleeing the company.

I don’t know if it’s as dramatic as they are making it sound in this title, but it sure sounds dramatic. Given how they cover Peloton, I’m going to go ahead and say it’s probably less dramatic than it sounds. It is interesting that there are so many executives that are leaving all at the same time. It’s also interesting that this article is linking the timing to the fact that Peloton is having struggles like they’re fighting it out with iFIT right now.

When you get a Peloton, just enjoy every moment and don't get too pressured about it. Do it because you like to do it. Share on X

I think it is an SEO headline thing.

It makes perfect sense. They’re all about the clicks.

Some of them are working there for 28 years.

Maybe they’re just retiring. That’s a long time to work for a company. Good luck to them.

Ashton Kutcher spoke with ET Online about his 12-pound weight loss while he’s been training for the New York City marathon with Peloton.

I didn’t watch the whole video but I saw another article. They made it sound like he had some illness in the middle of all of this too. I don’t know whether that’s accurate because the way it was worded was weird. Either way, he’s feeling good now, ready to do all of his marathon training. It’s only a couple of months until November and he’s going to be out there. It’s very nice that Mila Kunis was so supportive of him.

I should also put on my Reel Spoilers hat for a moment and say that Ashton Kutcher is in the new B.J. Novak movie called Vengeance.

If you haven’t seen that, you need to see that.

One of the best movies of the year, 100%. It was so good. If your Facebook feed is like mine, you’ve probably seen ads for it nonstop. It was only in theaters for a couple of weeks, then it moved to VOD. It’s worth your time. It’s really good.

I know it sounds like a bro-action movie. It’s not what it is. Take a second look.

It’s very smart. If you like true crime kind of things, it’s not true crime but it’s playing in the world of true crime from a fictional standpoint. It’s worth your time.

We should also talk about Ashton Kutcher since he is doing this big training with Peloton. They have now dropped Our Future Selves. They’re going to have a collection of classes. The first one has dropped. There was a 10-minute cooldown and a 20-minute seasoned premiere. All season, there is going to be different. They had Becs. She’s one of the instructors, other instructors will also be joining and Ashton himself. There was Robin and a whole bunch of other people that are going to show up, including lots of celebrities. Apparently, Ashton not only has a basement with three Peloton treads in it, but it’s an entire recording studio. They recorded the entire thing in his basement. It kicks the crap out of our recording studio.

If you fund Twitter, you can have that too.

I’ll work on it.

There is a new Jess Sims capsule collection that Crystal is currently shaking her head at.

It has been a while since we’ve had apparel drama, but we have apparel drama. Somebody started posting all this crap about, “They’re going to have a whole instructor cloth line.” That got in everybody’s head to expect all the instructors to have a cloth line drop. They didn’t and they never were planning on it. They dropped a capsule collection for one instructor. Instead of it being this amazing thing, now everyone is disappointed because somebody misinterpreted something.

There’s a lot of buzz about that, but also people are very salty over the fact that everything is sold out already. What they have to understand is that the first capsule collection that they did was Jess Sims and the You Get To crew can buy some and they did. They bought it all. It’s all sold out. It’s all gone. They only had three items within it and they’re gone.

My guess is, and it is just a guess, they will be restocking that, but they will probably wait several months before they do it so don’t be upset. Be upset if you want to be upset, but hold your horses because that’s likely what we’re going to see. It’s going to be later. I also thought it was interesting that when Peloton like posted this, they were like, “This is our first ever in Peloton instructor-inspired capsule collection. I was like, “No, it’s not. I own a ton of them.” That’s a bunch of bull crap.

Even I know that’s BS.

I hate when companies do that. They re-introduce something and then they call it their very first one. It’s annoying.

Is it possible that there has been so much turnover that they’ve lost that institutional memory?

No. That was a big deal and Jill Foley did it.

If you weren’t around, maybe they got some 22-year-old running it.

TCO 274 | Consistent Working Out

First of all, shame on them if they do. Second of all, no. She was the owner’s wife and the people left have no idea what she did.

I don’t know who they replaced her with.

I don’t either, but shame on them if they don’t know. My favorite was always Robin’s. Honestly, she’s not the person I take classes with, but we don’t do basics. That black tank top I have, I protect it like it is a piece of gold. When I wash it, I have to hang it dry so that nothing gets tattered and it lasts and it’s got to be in the gentle cycle. It’s a whole thing. I got to protect it for life. I have a whole bunch of them though.

I totally do basic though. I am very basic.

We at Peloton, don’t. I thought that was weird. Also, it was very pretty. I liked how it wasn’t exactly her signature line, but it was a play on her signature line. I liked that too. We’ll see. I do think they’re going to do more of them. I think they’re probably going to do what they used to do. Each instructor will get a capsule collection, but there are 55 of them. Are they going to make us wait five years to get through everybody?

They could do one a week.

I know. How is that going to work? I’m curious to see. They do a lot more capsule collections than they used to. Maybe they will have four. Even at four a year, that would take forever.

Joining us is Keely Wisbey. I have to say, that might be my favorite name in the history of the show.

Keely, you were telling us that there’s a little history with your last name. Now you have to share with everybody the history of your last name.

According to my grandad, bless him. He says that it’s a great train robber.

She claims she’s not a robber.

Isn’t it funny how as we get more removed in time from criminals, we start to like them like pirates and train robbers?

It’s this romanticism that goes along with it.

Pirates were like the Crips and the Bloods of their day. They were awful but now they’re these cute little things and you get your kids’ pictures taken with them and it’s talk like a pirate day.

They’re safe now because we’ve romanticized the notion. There are still actual pirates and they are actually not safe, so be careful out there on the high seas.

We should say you’re from the UK. As Americans, we don’t know the difference between England, Britain and the UK. We call it the uck.

Tom calls it the uck. He’s trying to make it a thing.

I feel like I would have known you were British based on the name Keely Wisbey. I don’t know if that’s a hate crime. If it is, I apologize.

I don’t think it is because it’s like O’Keeffe. It’s automatically Irish because it got punctuation and it starts with an O. They know you’re Irish.

Except for web forms. Try typing in O’Keefe in a web form. You got two capital letters and a punctuation mark.

Don’t even get him started on the junior.

Don’t ever make a kid a junior in today’s world. It’s too much for the internet to process. It’s a curse.

Every time we leave the country, it requires a whole set of documentation outside of our passport. It’s insane.

Movement is medicine. Share on X

Keely is like, “Do you need me for this?”

I’m having fun. I’m glad to be here.

In summation, I think you teach at Hogwarts. That’s all I’m saying.

That would be my dream. How did you know?

Do you have a platform? Nine and three quarters.

This house is full of muggles. I’m the only witch.

Keely, how did you find Peloton?

I’m probably in the same realm as everyone else that you probably talked to. It was through the pandemic.

It was pretty bad in the UK.

It’s still around and it seems to be getting worse again.

We’re not doing anything about it anymore and people who haven’t or are not going to get vaccinated or even people that have gotten vaccinated that they don’t necessarily have boosters are now getting it again. The only reason that I consider it over is because now most people are vaccinated. At least people aren’t dying on a ventilator. There are so many people that are going into a hospital and they can’t get on a ventilator. We’ve made some strides but it’s still not where it should be. Maybe it’ll never be again. I don’t even know. No one knows. It has been a weird time. Were you a person who workout all the time before the pandemic and then you were like, “Now I can’t work out anymore?”

I started going to the gym maybe six months before the pandemic. I got so into it and then they shut all the gyms. I was like, “What am I going to do?” I got myself some weights. I was doing home workouts and then a TV. I’ve come on Peloton. It showed all the strength classes. I got into yoga over the pandemic as well. I was like, “Let me give this a try.” I downloaded the app, then from that moment on, I went on a 118-week streak for just being on the app. On the 13th of August, my tread arrived. It opened a whole new thing for me. I’m obsessed and I’m still buzzing right now because I’ve got back from the studio. I did a 30-minute run with Jermaine.

I have taken so many classes with the UK running instructors. It’s interesting because the way that my timing schedule works out and the classes that appealed to me, I don’t end up taking that many classes with the UK bike instructors, but a lot of my running classes have become the UK instructors. Susie Chan and Joslyn Thompson Rule are amazing. Jon Hosking’s playlists are amazing. I love his classes. It’s so much fun, and of course, Jermaine. He’s a lot of fun. He has a lot of great classes. There are a lot of good instructors in the UK for the running side. That was your first time in the studio, right?

I’m with my friend because Emma, my partner, is not into fitness. She’s sitting over there in the curry right now.

We have a similar dynamic.

You would never eat curry because it has spices in it. You would be like, “Nope.”

Is it as difficult to get into the London studio as it is over here?

No. There was a lady from America in the queue when I was queuing up to see and take pictures with Jermaine. I said, “Have you been to the New York studio?” She was like, “I can’t get in them.” I was like, “Really?” She goes, “I got in here instantly.” I was like, “My friend jumped on and she was on the wait list then two days later they said there’s a space.” It’s a lot easier.

Enjoy it while it last.

I’m not sure if it will stay that way, but I was like ongoing and that is that.

How close do you live to the studio? When we go to the studios here in the United States, it’s a track. It’s a thousand miles away. It requires a flight and a hotel room for multiple days because I’m not going to fly there for one day in most instances.

We’ve done it and we’re planning to do it, but we don’t do that.

It’s a whole thing. Is it like that for you or is it a fairly easy track to get to?

TCO 274 | Consistent Working Out

It’s a 44-minute train journey. It’s so easy for me.

That’s great. That’s fun because hopefully, that means you’ll get to go back. You’ll be able to go back often.

I’m already looking at the one on my background. She’s like, “Not yet.”

When Tom and I decide we’re going to go, then I have to book multiple classes because it will probably be months before I get to go back again. It’s usually a once-a-year thing, maybe twice if I’m lucky. When we’re going at the end of September for Tom’s birthday, I get to do three classes and I am so excited. You got to find a balance because I want to do other things while I’m in New York. I don’t want to just go to classes. I love it but then I also want to see the Peloton people that are there. I want to hang out with them and I want to have a party. I want to go to the shows and I want to do all the things. It’s tough. You got to balance. It’s expensive because I want to do all the things.

I was so close to buying every piece of merchandise that was in there.

It looks better in the store than on the website because you’re pumped up with adrenaline. I’m pretty sure there’s some kind of magic happening there.

Do you have a bike and a tread or just the tread?

Just the tread. I feel like a bit of a fraud because I don’t really ride.

Why does that make you feel like a fraud? Why is that bad?

Because Peloton is mostly about the bike.

My guess would be right now the marketing department is very excited because most people that have a tread seem to also have a bike. I think they’re excited that someone’s entry point was a treadmill.

I agree. I think we’ll be seeing this in the future. This is what they’re looking for. You are the consumer that Peloton is looking for right now.

They look at you and they’re like, “We did it. Mission accomplished.”

You went to the studio and you bought apparel. You are killing it from Peloton’s marketing department.

I keep Peloton going. I am actually looking like I want to buy.

I know that in different places in the UK, just like in America, there are some cities where the housing is very small. Do you have room for a tread and a bike? Is that even possible?

We can’t find a room. I’ll remove the dining room table to get my tread.

I’ve heard that before. I get it. It’s a perfect place. You might have room in your dining room for a bike right next to the tread then.

Apparently, it doesn’t take up as much room.

It doesn’t.

It has a much smaller footprint.

She got the tread so that’s a plus. It’s not as much of a difference.

She has the Tread+ so it’s a behemoth.

TCO 274 | Consistent Working Out

It’s ginormous compared to the tread. Either way, it’s still smaller for sure. Now you’re going to have the rower coming out. You got some real decisions to make. That’s going to be tough.

That’s very exciting.

Do you feel like since you have had the tread you’re working out more than when you were going to the gym? Is it the same rhythm that you were doing before?

It’s way more. I did a twelve-hour shift at work the other day. I got home at about half eight. I was like, “I still need to run on my treads.” I still go do it.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a prison officer.

That’s hard. That sounds like a stressful job.

I’ve got it easy because I get to walk around with my dogs.

People probably leave you alone. There’s no funny business.

Is it like the dogs would sniff out drugs and stuff?

She’s a patrol dog. If they riot, then she would bite them.

I’m not sure because you don’t have guns over there in the same way that we do.

I did not realize that. We’ll leave the politics out of that.

That’s probably a very different mentality as far as having a dog to protect you versus a gun. Do you guys have a lot of riots and stuff in the prisons? I know here in some places, it can happen on any day.

I’m very lucky with the one that I’m at that it’s not much.

Is it men and women?

It’s just men.

Do you guys in the UK break it down to minimum security and maximum security? Is it like that? Does it depend on the type of crime they did and what type of security it is?

It’s categories A, B, C, and D.

Is it based on the type of crime?

You have jails and prisons. Ours are just all prisons. You can go there even if you’re not convicted.

They hold people there. It’s one facility for people who are being held prior to trial or after conviction. That’s a very different set-up.

The category is based on how not for escape or how bad the crime is, so I’m definitely not a thief now.

TCO 274 | Consistent Working Out

We’re qualifiers to put on something. She’s like, “Now that I’ve seen prisons, I decided to give up my life of crime.” Were they worried at all about your familial history of train robbery? Is that problematic for you?

Did you have to explain that away?

Your ancestors are ashamed of you. You’ve changed sides.

That puts a whole new spin on it. It sounds like a very stressful job. You’re saying it’s a twelve-hour shift and then you still run. That takes a lot of dedication.

I rave about it at work to all my colleagues. They’re like, “Shut up.” I’m like, “If you actually took a class and realized how amazing it is, you would totally be on the same level as me.

Did they buy or did they take the classes?

They’re on the app, but he’s got his own bike, not a Peloton. He does it through the app on that. That’s what I did at the gym. I was going on the bikes and I had it on my phone, going on the tread. How I got into the tread was because I did bootcamps. They’re my favorite thing. I love lifting weights to incorporate it with running as well. I was like, “Who even invented this?”

Do you do the bootcamps at home too?

Yeah.

How do you choose which classes you take? There are so many classes to choose from.

I do everything and anything.

Do you get to take live classes or do you get to take mostly on-demand?

I do more on-demand just for the timings because of the shift work and stuff. I have done quite a few live classes. I think I’ve done about six. My first one as soon as my tread was delivered was Jess Sims’s 60-minute bootcamp.

You did a Saturday 60 as your first class? Holy crap.

I did them at the gym before. There’s an air con in the gym.

You guys don’t all have air conditioning. I forget that. It has been epically hot this year.

It’s grizzly hot here and that’s unheard of.

How does that work in a prison? Do you guys have air conditioning there? No. It stinks. I bet it would.

What’s the temperature typically over there in the summer? It fascinates me that air conditioning is so rare over there. It’s not like you’re a lesser developed nation.

The hottest we have like the end of July and August is probably about 30 usually. That’s not always.

TCO 274 | Consistent Working Out

What is 30 degrees Celcius in Fahrenheit?

We have to change it because we still do the old stuff. We never made the jump to metric. We’ve tried it in the ‘70s and that’s why people voted out Carter.

30 degrees Celsius is 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

That’s not bad for an absolute high.

That’s their typical.

I’m just saying if that’s your typical, I get why you would be like, “Why spend the money on air conditioning?”

Especially if it’s only a couple of weeks a year.

We’re okay with a fan. I think it was about 32 when I attempted to do that.

That’s a lot. In St. Louis, the weather is weird. There are probably about 10, 15 days a year where we will turn on the air conditioner and the heater on the same day. That happens. It will get cold in the morning or at night, then during the day, you’re sweating your butt off. It’s weird.

We’re changing clothes about three times a day or so.

With all the different classes you take and you love your bootcamps, do you have a favorite instructor?

That would be Jess Sims. It has to be. I love so many of them. I think I’ve done her from the start with the strength classes, but then I love my yoga. Chelsea is amazing. She has all of that energy, every one of them.

You like the positive ones, I can tell. You probably like Ross’s meditations if you do meditations. I don’t know who you would like on the bike. There are so many to choose from. Who were your bike instructors when you were riding?

I’ve done more with Robin. Ben from the UK and Leanne. I love them too. I didn’t realize they were together. I never knew that until I went and bought my tread.

You have to go back and listen to that episode where we did a big reveal. They put it all over social media so we talked about it. We didn’t announce it for them. They announced it then we talked about it, but it was a lot of fun. It was cute how they did it. It was right in the middle of the pandemic and they started filming at home. They figured out pretty quick like, “We’re living together. Everybody is going to figure out we’re together because the background will look the same if we’re filming from home.” They had no choice but to tell everybody.

That’s how people figured out that we’re married.

What is your leaderboard name and how did you come up with it?

My leaderboard name is Keely Wheely. It’s very original.

I love it. It’s so fun to say.

It’s original because you didn’t have to put a number on it. You’re not like Keely Wheely 419. Although you do need a bike if you’re going to have Wheely in your name. That’s a little fraudulent. It’s a nod to the Wisbeys of York.

It makes perfect sense. You’ve spoken now so I’m off to buy a bike.

Do you have any advice for people who are just getting a Peloton?

Enjoy every second. I don’t think I can put into words how much the community means to me and how everyone is so amazing. When I come across your podcast, the energy and everything is amazing. Everything is so positive. Enjoy every moment. Keep going. Don’t feel pressured either. You do it because you love to do it.

TCO 274 | Consistent Working Out

Don’t stress about the leaderboard or worry that you’re going too slowly or worry that you can’t take the hills as high or whatever. Whatever you’re worried about, don’t. You’re doing more than you were before. Who cares?

Just get moving. They always say that movement is medicine enough. That’s 100% true.

Have you had any encounters with the community that stand out that have been turning points for you? You were saying how much the community means to you. I feel like you probably had some moments when things happen during conversations that warmed your heart.

I tagged Susie Chan in a video. She messaged me back and I had a full-blown conversation with her on Instagram. I was like, “Is this actually happening?” She’s actually taking her time out to ask me what my favorite Chase & Status song was. I was just shell shocked.

Your favorite what?

Chase & Status song.

The band from the AFO. I didn’t know them. That was one of the ones I didn’t know.

I was obsessed with them when I was at university.

How old are you, Keely? You must be so young.

I’m 30.

That’s young. The older we get, the younger 30 is.

I’m not going to be one saying, “I’m going to be 29.”

I understand. You feel it in your bones after a while. You’ll give that up.

At some point, you start to wear it like a badge of honor.

It’s like, “I survived.”

On my movie podcast. The other guys are in their 30s. I’m like, “I’m in my 50s. I know things you don’t.” Thank you so much for joining us. This has been an absolute blast. Before we let you go, where can people find you on social media if you would like to be found?

I’m on Instagram @ItsKeelyWheely. I posted a lot of videos and reels of me and my dog Rosie, all things Peloton and sweat sessions. That’s me.

Thank you so much again for joining us.

Thank you. It has been amazing.

I guess that brings this episode to a close. Until next time, where can people find you?
