Professional Women’s Basketball is Welcomed Under the Peloton Pride Umbrella
Back in October of 2023, Peloton announced a new partnership with the NBA and – for the first time ever – the WNBA, and now that the W’s season is in full swing, we see some movement on the womens’ side with Peloton’s classes! (If you are new to following professional women’s basketball, the branding of the WNBA is moving towards being known as the W!)
Pride and the WNBA
Pride month is warmly embraced across the WNBA (particularly by the hometown NY Liberty team – check out this amazing coverage of their recent 10th Annual Pride game!). Sports Illustrated reports, “The W holds a unique place in the world of sports and entertainment, as one of America’s few cultural outputs that is elementally queer and primarily women-led.” In support of this, Peloton has bundled classes for members that celebrate Pride and the WNBA in their first foray into the partnership programming, labeled WNBA x Pride Selects.
In addition to some of the recent and upcoming Pride classes, we are also treated to an oldie but a goodie, Jock Jams Full Body Strength with Jess Sims, who serves as a sideline reporter for the NY Liberty team (as well as range of other non-Peloton professional sports gigs). Personally, I’ve had that Jock Jams class (from 3/17/23) in my stack for a long time, maybe this will drive me to finally get it check, done!
An Exciting Time for the WNBA
We are excited to see what else Peloton has in store for W fans. As the season runs from May through October, there is plenty of time to get on this bandwagon if you’re not there yet! The W is harnessing the excitement from the recent NCAA finals and the rookie year for many of the talented women from that class (Angel Reese, Caitlin Clark, Cameron Brink, and Kate Martin to name a few) as the league enjoys unprecedented growth and viewership. According to their reporting, the W proudly announced in a recent press release that:
- From the start of the season to the end of May, more than half of all WNBA games were sellouts, which is a 156% increase from last year.
- WNBA arenas were filled to a 94% capacity, up 17% from last year.
- May set an all-time high for WNBA League Pass subscriptions with a 335% increase vs. last season.
We love to see this celebration of incredible athletes – who happen to be women – both within Peloton and nationally! After Pride month ends, what kind of WNBA-themed programming are you hoping to see from Peloton? Let us know!
