Matt Wilpers Tackles the “Cardio Kills” Myth for Marathon Runners

The Matt Wilpers strength training marathon prep approach just got a research-based reality check. In a new Instagram reel, the Peloton instructor takes on the “Cardio Kills” myth, the fear that sustained running erodes muscle and strength gains. His verdict: probably not.

Research suggests most people can still build muscle while maintaining a consistent running routine. When interference does occur, Wilpers says, it tends to be modest and shows up more in lower-body strength than in overall muscle size. That distinction matters for anyone who has been dreading what high mileage might be doing to their lifts.

Matt suggests separating your working days. Not timing your workouts properly can impede your ability to lift heavy due to fatigue in the lower body. For example, separating hard runs and hard legs days is his recommendation. You can still run, but be mindful of the plan you are choosing depending on your strength goal. 

Another culprit behind losing muscle may be your nutrition. Wilpers flags the importance of fueling properly to avoid slipping into a calorie deficit, and gets personal about it. It is a mistake he says he made often himself, one that led him to believe the myth was true. That kind of candor makes the advice land differently than a data summary would. Matt Wilpers Strength Training Marathon Programs on Peloton

The reel connects to a body of structured programming Wilpers has built on the platform for runners. The clearest example is Strength for Runners, a one-week repeatable program co-led with instructor Becs Gentry. It includes three 30-minute strength sessions and a 10-minute Core for Runners class. In the opening session, Wilpers advises scheduling strength work after runs rather than before, a practical cue that reflects the same logic as the reel: cumulative muscle stress matters, and sequencing controls it. There are additional classes in the library geared to helping runners build and maintain strength. 

Wilpers also contributes strength content to the Road to 26.2 marathon training program and the Road to Half Marathon collection, which integrates Strength for Runners classes across a 10-week schedule. Runners working toward a spring race will find his programming woven throughout both plans.

Matt Wilpers Strength Training Marathon Prep and the Nutrition Connection

The nutrition callout in the reel is part of a larger body of content Matt has been building around fueling and longevity. He hosts the Move for Life podcast on YouTube, a series focused on the science of healthy aging and what research shows about living longer. Episode 1 features Dr. Kavita Patel, a Peloton wellness advisory board member and NBC News medical contributor, covering which biomarkers to track and why people in their 30s and 40s should already be thinking about this. Episode 2 addresses exercise and lifespan directly, including the tradeoffs between cardio and strength training. These conversations are also available as Walks in the Peloton platform. 

The podcast connects to Peloton’s Move for Life program, a four-week longevity training plan built around research-recommended minimums for cardio and strength work. Wilpers extended the framework in early 2026 with three structured weekly plans that combine walking and strength at different intensity levels, all drawing from Peloton’s existing class library.
