Peloton Pilates and The Pilates Plug: Johanna’s Dual Roles

Johanna Ricouz Brings “The Pilates Plug” to Peloton

Peloton’s latest roster expansion includes an instructor new to Peloton but well known within many other fitness and wellness communities: Johanna Ricouz. The creator of “The Pilates Plug,” Johanna joins the team with a pre-existing empire, a signature method, and a faithful following that paved the way to her Peloton journey. Bringing a bold personality, solid technical expertise, and an impressive business acumen, Johanna has arrived and she’s ready to go, baby!

The Architect of “The Pilates Plug”

Johanna’s entry into the Peloton universe comes after more than ten years of building her own methodology. Long before she clipped a microphone onto her new Peloton apparel, she was developing a signature Pilates blend she calls “The Pilates Plug.”

The name itself carries a specific intention. According to listeners familiar with her background, the “Plug” refers to being “plugged in” to the community and the practice, fostering a deep feeling of belonging. It serves as a branding trademark that distinguishes her style from generic Pilates instruction.

On the technical side of instruction, Johanna holds a variety of Pilates certifications that inform her unique approach, including classical, contemporary, and Reformer methods. In the Pilates world, the distinction between classical and contemporary is significant. Classical Pilates adheres strictly to the classic contrology method developed by Joseph Pilates, following a specific order of exercises and transitions. Contemporary Pilates, conversely, adapts those exercises based on modern exercise science and physical therapy, often allowing for more creative sequencing.

How Johanna Puts It All Together

Johanna’s method is a synthesis of these schools of thought. She has created a “spin” on the practice that observes the rigors of classical training while incorporating the playfulness and adaptability of contemporary styles. For Peloton members, this likely means classes that feel grounded in traditional technique but are delivered with a modern, accessible flow.

And, if you’ve tried her classes already, you know she gets things nice and hot, from her spicy commentary to her hip hop playlists. She operates under a large proverbial “tent,” clearly welcoming everyone under, focusing on representation in Pilates and yoga for all people and all bodies.

Early interactions with Peloton members suggest that despite the gritty persona she sometimes portrays on her IG, Johanna is a tough instructor with a heart of gold. She will be the first to tell you that she’s “a lot” and that if you don’t like it, you can “go find less.” It’s been fun to watch her enjoy getting used to the Peloton life, being styled by Peloton’s Lynsey Buckalew and joking with her fellow instructors in the green room. Reports from those who have met her at the studio describe her as kind and gracious.

Beyond Instruction: The Educator’s Role

A notable feature of Johanna’s background is her role as an educator. She runs her own Pilates teacher certification courses and continuing education classes for already-certified instructors. Her program, often held in Miami where she is based, offers an inclusive curriculum covering advanced cueing, class sequencing, and working with props. However, her training goes beyond the mat. Based on promotional materials for her independent events, she also educates instructors on the business of fitness, teaching them how to create brand decks, close brand deals, host events, and build community.  One important note: Johanna only teaches classes publicly for members at Peloton.

This paired expertise in movement and business suggests that Peloton has acquired a seasoned industry veteran who understands the fitness branding ecosystem as well as she understands the “Hundred.”

Operational Logistics: The Miami-New York Hybrid

The logistics of Johanna’s tenure at Peloton reflect a modern path to talent management. Information from her recent “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) on Instagram confirms that she will remain based in Miami, where she lives with her husband and stepdaughter. Her schedule will involve traveling to New York City to film content and teach live classes, a model similar to the arrangement Peloton has with instructor Callie Gullickson.

This arrangement enables Johanna to maintain her roots in the Miami fitness community, where she has a strong physical presence, while accessing the global platform that Peloton provides. For members, this delivers a steady stream of content without requiring the instructor to completely uproot her established life.

Maintaining Independence

A key point of interest for industry observers is the separation between Johanna’s Peloton duties and her independent business. She has clarified that she will continue leading her own trainings, which will remain distinctly separate from her work with Peloton.

This is a significant detail. It shows that while she is now a Peloton employee, she retains autonomy over “The Pilates Plug” as an educational entity. Her retreats and certification programs, which she holds several times a year across the country, will continue under her leadership. This suggests a contract structure that allows for co-existence rather than exclusivity regarding her intellectual property and educational products.

Strategic Intersection of Audiences

The “collision” of Johanna’s two worlds offers competitive advantages for Peloton. This hire suggests an intentional move to capture a specific segment of the Pilates market, which values high-level technical instruction and boutique branding.

There is already evidence of audience crossover. Followers who knew Johanna from “The Pilates Plug” and her Miami studio presence are now more likely to download the Peloton app to access more of her content. Conversely, existing Peloton members who are interested in becoming Pilates instructors on their own are beginning to inquire about her external certification programs.

By bringing in talent who already commands a dedicated audience that travels for her events, Peloton taps into a pre-qualified customer base. These are not just casual exercisers; they are dedicated Pilates practitioners willing to invest in their practice. Johanna acts like a bridge, bringing her community onto the platform while offering Peloton’s massive user base access to a highly specialized, technical instructor.

A New Chapter for Peloton Pilates

Johanna’s arrival signals a maturity in Peloton’s Pilates vertical. By hiring an instructor who also trains other instructors, the platform reinforces its allegiance to credibility and technical excellence.

For members, this translates to high-quality instruction rooted in a decade of development. Whether one is a “Jungle Johanna” alumni or a Peloton loyalist taking her class for the first time, the experience proves to be a sophisticated amalgam of method and motivation. As she begins this “East Coast North South” journey, Johanna is set to plug a new level of expertise into the platform.

Have you tried her classes yet? What do you think of this strategic approach on Peloton’s part?
