Breaking Up Workouts Throughout the Day: Is it Beneficial?
The concept of breaking up workouts into smaller segments throughout the day is gaining traction as a popular fitness trend. Many health enthusiasts are following this workout regimen to accelerate fat loss, and there is scientific evidence to support this method. However, it’s essential to understand the benefits and drawbacks of this approach to workouts before including it in your fitness regime.
Angelo from MetPro stopped by The Clip Out studio recently to talk about this very topic, and addressed a question from a listener who explained that she wanted to accelerate her fat loss. She read recently that it’s best to do cardio in the morning and strength training in the afternoon, instead of doing her usual routine of a full hour in the afternoon 3 to 4 times a week. She wanted Angelo’s opinion on the benefit of doing 30 minutes of cardio in the morning and 30 minutes of strength in the afternoon, to break up her 1 hour workout.
Boosting Metabolism with Multiple Workouts a Day
Angelo explained that one of the primary advantages of breaking up your workouts into multiple sessions throughout the day is that it can help kickstart your metabolism and keep it elevated. Studies have shown that physical activity can raise your metabolic rate for several hours after you finish working out. By splitting your workouts into shorter segments, you can enjoy multiple “spikes” in your metabolic rate throughout the day, potentially accelerating weight loss and muscle gain.
However, it’s important to note that not all workouts are created equal. Endurance exercises like running or cycling require consistent effort over an extended period of time and cannot benefit from breaking up workout sessions throughout the day. Endurance athletes need to put the time in – there’s no getting around that!
Consistency is Key
While multiple workouts per day can be a helpful approach to achieving fitness goals, Angelo emphasized that it’s essential to ensure that you’re consistent in your efforts. Consistent workouts are crucial to improve metabolism, and individuals exercising more than three times a week can lose an additional 34% body fat, irrespective of the duration or intensity of the workout. When you choose to work out shouldn’t matter as long as you are consistent. If you anchor your workout to a specific time in your schedule that doesn’t move, it doesn’t matter whether it’s in the morning or afternoon.
Fasted Cardio: Is it Right for You?
While some may argue that fasted-state cardio workouts are the most effective approach, Angelo says the reality is that the benefits depend on an individual’s body type and weight loss goals. For individuals who are closer to their goal weight or are ectomorphs, fasted cardio workouts may not be the best approach. However, mesomorphs and endomorphs may benefit more from fasted-state cardio workouts. It’s essential to pay attention to your body’s needs and determine what approach works best for you.
In conclusion, breaking up workouts throughout the day can be an effective approach to accelerating your fitness goals if done correctly. It’s crucial to stay consistent, follow a workout regimen that meets your needs, and listen to your body to ensure that you’re achieving the results you desire. With effort, determination, and the right approach, you can transform your body and reach new levels of fitness!
