A REVIEW OF PELOTON’S “SET THE BARRE” PROGRAM

If you’re looking for a low impact program that will work muscles that you don’t always work in other class modalities, this program is for you.  Ally Love and Hannah Corbin definitely bring the energy to this series of classes!   The music is varied throughout the program and the exercises you learn throughout the four weeks of work culminate in a one hour long Barre burner!

If you haven’t ever taken a Barre class or if you’re wondering about the benefits of Barre, this article will give you all of the answers.   I, (and many others), completed this program while we were also doing Rebecca’s 3 day split.  Doing this was challenging because the 3 day split classes are all 45 minutes and some of the barre classes are 45 minutes or an hour, so fitting them all into my already packed schedule each day (plus trying to fit in some biking/running/rowing) was challenging. However, the mix of working large and small muscles really seemed to work – my leg muscles are definitely popping after this mix of programs.

The first couple of weeks of this program have some shorter, focused classes (ie. upper body/lower body/core). The third class of week three is a 45 minute class.  The longer classes each week take the basic moves from the shorter classes and combine them into one long class.  Some of the classes feature both instructors, and the energy between Hannah and Ally is fabulous.

This program is low impact and is accessible to any level of fitness or experience with barre, with a lot of suggested modifications to make  the moves easier or harder.  When both instructors are teaching, one does the basic moves and the other does modified moves so you can follow either.

Each week provides a full body workout. Hannah adds some fun dance moves to the movement – you can follow along or just stick to the basic moves.  Some classes also incorporate weights and bands as an option which definitely helps make the moves more advanced and definitely challenging.

If you’re experienced in Barre these classes might seem somewhat basic, but it’s always good to refresh your form and add in some advanced modifications. I also loved that these classes varied from five minutes (the initial warmup class) to a final one hour class, with lots of fifteen, twenty, thirty, and forty five  minute classes as well.  The only negative reaction I had to the classes were that some of them seemed to move very fast, with the instructors trying to include a lot of different moves in a very compact amount of time. However, I did feel sufficiently familiar with all of the movements to confidently complete the final one hour class.
