Peloton Kettlebell Classes Are Coming Plus Our Interview With Enuma Iyob!

Welcome to The Clip Out, episode 400.

The audience can’t see it. I got you all these flowers to celebrate our 400th episode. There are flowers and chocolates. I got her a gold-plated Peloton tread, the big one. It’s in the other room. I can’t get in here. It’s heavy. They’re already heavy but it’s all gold.

This isn’t April Fools Day.

Four hundred of these things. Holy cow.

That is a lot of people to talk to. It’s a lot of topics to cover. Eight years. That’s crazy.

What pray tell do you have in store for people?

We are going to be talking to our interview guest, Enuma. We are going to hear about her amazing athletic and Peloton journey. She had a lot to share and a lot of fun to talk to. We have all kinds of information that’s coming in. We have kettlebell classes coming. We have lawsuit updates. We have the next Lululemon event, when the studio is going to be closed again, and what happened with Running Pace Target? We have all of the updates. We’re going to talk about the rise of gyms as clinics.

You said this to me and I found this fascinating.

We also have instructor updates. We have lots of content to talk through and we’ll talk about birthdays as well.

While you’re talking about all the updates, we should also give people an update on Helper Bee Tina.

First of all, people have donated $2,200. Thank you so much. Please keep sharing it everywhere. Every time I post an update, that’s what keeps the momentum on these things going. Mason has had two chemo treatments so far. He is going to have another one. Hopefully, that’s going well. They’re hoping, cross your fingers, they’re going to get to go home for a few days, and then they’ll have to come back for the next couple of Wednesdays and stay for his chemo treatment.

They live in Erie, which is in Pittsburgh, so they have to go back and forth. After the 30 days are up, then they start a new treatment cycle. We will find out what that’s going to look like because that’s completely going to depend. The hard part about this, specifically this week, is if he gets to come home, then the big scare is if he gets a fever. They have all these protocols that they have in place that they want Tina to do. The big thing is to get him back to Pittsburgh as soon as possible.

That’s hard on Tina because she’s like, “Now I want to take his temperature every five minutes.” If anything is down like his blood count or his white blood cells whenever he comes in for his chemo treatment, they could still admit him. There’s this crazy uncertainty on top of a horrible situation that I don’t even know how she’s dealing with. I don’t do well with uncertainty or things I can’t control. Nothing about this is certain nor how to control it. She just has to ride the wave.

Put your head down and power through and do the things you can do and hope for the best.

The love and messages that people have been sending, I’ve been passing them all on to Tina. She appreciates all of you so much. We are so happy that so many people are sending these powerful messages from so many moms who have been through this. I hate that there are so many moms who are going through this, but thank you all. We also found out that since Mason just turned 18 a few weeks ago, there is no program for him for assistance. Whatever the insurance doesn’t cover, she’s on the hook for it. Keep those donations coming. Thank you all for all the support for Tina. We love her so much and we wish them both well.

This week on the bonus episode, Kristin McGee has a new book. We will give you all the details about that. The LA Fitness deal is official. We will talk to you about that. Peloton is inviting people to a new challenge from 2023, so not a new challenge at all. We will discuss what’s going on there. All the other instructor updates and stuff that we don’t have time to get to and the main episodes. It also helps the show. There’s a lot of expenses and stuff, so it helps us there as well. We’re on YouTube at YouTube.com/TheClipOut. We also have a newsletter. You will most likely get an email this week. There’s all that. Let’s dig in. Shall we?

We shall.

‐‐‐

Kettlebell classes are coming.

Peloton posted an Instagram teaser saying, “You asked. We answered.“ They were teasing the Kettlebell classes. There are two big questions that everyone is talking about. One, who’s going to teach these classes? On that note, we have seen photographs pop up of Tunde, Katie, and other instructors who happened to be in the gym. They happened to be standing next to kettlebells. Maybe it has nothing to do with that.

We can also safely assume that at least a few strengths instructors will be involved even if it’s only at the beginning and they add more in. The other burning question that people have is whether Peloton now be selling kettlebells. The reason that people are asking that is there’s a reel that Peloton posted. It has an instructor in it with a kettlebell. If you look closely, it looks like it could be a Peloton P. I could easily be swayed either way. It’s such a brief second.

I tried to pause it.

It’s almost impossible. We will see, but those are those are the big questions that people have for now. I forgot, there’s one more question. The question is whether it will be on the regular app or the Strength+ app. We don’t know the answer to that because, on the Strength+ app, the first program that Rebecca Kennedy put out had kettlebell swings included in it. Will these kettlebell classes be available on the regular app? The reason that’s so important is so many people don’t have access to Strength+. I just wanted to explain that.

You’re here to explain things. That’s why you’re Clip Out Crystal and I’m the sidekick, For the uninitiated, I’m asking for other people that might not know. Of course, I know the answer, but other people may not and they might be shy. They don’t want to ask the question and look silly. I’m asking it on their behalf. What’s a kettlebell do?

It’s like a regular weight but it has a handle on the top of it. You’re able to swing it. The reason that is important is because the moves that you do with kettlebells are a little bit different. In theory, you can do these moves with a dumbbell.

You can’t grip it the same way.

You can’t, and because you can’t grip it the same way, your muscles are not being used as effectively. When you swing a kettlebell you get some momentum going with it. In this case, you want the momentum to be there, unlike when you’re lifting a dumbbell over your head. The other thing is that if you try to use a regular dumbbell to do a kettlebell swing, you might be flexing and tightening in weird places. You are not going to get out of it in the same way you’re going to get out of it with the kettlebell.

Does it mean you can’t do it? No. You’re still going to get some benefit from it. The other thing is that a kettlebell is designed to be swung. It’s heavier at the bottom. When you do a swing with it, it’s going to come back down. You need to know how to use a kettlebell effectively. I hope to God there’s like an intro to kettlebells because it is so easy to hurt your back with these. We talked about this on the bonus episode a few weeks ago, unrelated to this news. They were talking about what are some things that you should never do, and kettlebells were on them. Never do a kettlebell swing.

I’m not going to lie. I’ve never done one. Shocking, I know, but it looks like a new and exciting way to throw out your back.

Do you remember when you workout on the Tonal 2 and you did the Aero mode? Do you know the one where you went all the way down to the bottom like you squatted?

Yeah.

That’s very close to a ball throw, which is similar to swinging a kettlebell. That’s the vibe you get from it but it’s safer with Tonal because it’s attached. It’s not going to fly off and hit you. A kettlebell can hit your hand, flip back over your wrist, or hit you in the face.

It’s a little bit like a murder weapon.

I wouldn’t want to piss somebody off that had one.

The Clip Out | Enuma Iyob | Peloton Kettlebell Classes

Professor Plum in the library with the kettlebell, that’s my solution.

If you don’t have a Tonal, it’s a great way to get the work, especially in your abs. It’s so effective. Kettlebells, when used properly, are amazing for your abs and stuff because you’re moving your body in a way that a regular dumbbell can’t do. You’re getting deep into those muscles and you’re activating all kinds of things that you’re not typically activating. There’s a lot of good that can come from that as well. I also don’t want people to think we’re anti-kettlebell because we’re not.

It’s very effective if you live through it.

Most people live through their kettlebells just fine. I’m saying though, you do need to know how to do it safely. This is not the same as just picking up a dumbbell and going up and down with it. People have gotten hurt. You want to be careful. I’m sure Peloton will have intro classes. I believe it was Helper Bee Nikki who said, “3, 2, 1, there goes our terms and conditions getting updated for kettlebell.”

Check this box before you lean into this workout. Peloton has a resolution to a lawsuit that’s been winding its way through the legal system for the better part of two years at this point. They were sued over the defective seat post. The seats were dropping.

It was one of those class action lawsuits. It was saying that Peloton concealed these problems that led to the recall. Eventually, they did the recall.

They lied about how much it would cost. They said it was going to cost $8.4 million, and then three months later, they ended up saying it was $40 million. They were like, “You lied.” A judge has found that they did not lie and that Peloton’s disclosures were “not materially misleading,” in part because they explicitly warned that recalls were possible.

That’s the opposite of misleading.

Yes. That lawsuit has been dismissed.

A lot of people filed claims that they never fulfilled. Peloton sent the new seat post and then people never did anything with them. They were having issues. They were like, “In case I have an issue.” I’m not saying people shouldn’t do that. I’m just saying that’s going to change the amount that when you have to do a recall, that’s also going to be difficult.

Because there are so many, I think this is the lawsuit where we reached out to the main complainant in the class action suit. I was talking with him on Facebook and then when I invited him on the show, radio silence.

It could be. As you said, there’s been so many lawsuits. I forgot that even happened. I forgot that you reached out to that person.

He was like, “Let’s set up a time,” and then never heard another word from him.

He probably was like, “My attorney thought that was a terrible idea.”

“If you want to get this lawsuit dismissed, yeah.” This seems more like the tail end of Barry’s tenure. He was cleaning up lawsuits. This has to be, if not the last one, certainly one of the last one hanging over their head.

It’s toward the end, but the last one we thought was the last one was not the last one.

That is true.

Unless you have some spreadsheet out there, how much of a nerd do you have to be if you don’t work for Peloton to have that one? I’m sure there’s somebody out there that has one. I’ve been super nerdy many times in my life, but I don’t know. There have been so many lawsuits.

For sure. It is a lot to keep track of.

He was knocking them out, left and right. He’s been gone for a long time now.

Yes, but there’s a long tail end on that.

There is, for sure.

Peloton has announced its next Lululemon event.

There are going to be classes taught by Adrian, Chelsea, Callie, and Cody. It’s going to be taking place between February 26th and March 9th. Interestingly though, it will be not taking place at the studio. It will be taking place at 210 Lafayette Street. This will be very interesting. It’s called the Glow Up Studio event. There are going to be all of these instructors teaching these classes. There are going to be meet-and-greet sessions, strength and stretch with Adrian, yoga and meditation with Chelsea, dance cardio, and then a stretch with Cody. There are some panel discussions with all four of the instructors there, and then strength and low-impact cardio.

This sounds like it’s right down the street from the Tonal pop-up studio.

It sure does. I wonder if it’s in the same place.

No, because I’m almost positive that the Tonal studio was at 188 Lafayette.

You’re right, and this would overlap slightly because the Tonal pop-up closes on the 28th. For a couple of days, they’re going to be right next to each other.

We know that Tonal space is used for pop-up experiences like this, so I wonder if this company has several establishments close together that they flip all the time for different things.

That’s possible. That’s considered Soho/Little Italy, depending on where the dividing line is. If you’re wondering where that is, that’s where it is. We know New York so well.

I remember the Tonal pop-up studio was at 188 Lafayette.

That’s pretty impressive.

I have no idea how or why I know that.

Right across the street is the most adorable little bar. Do you remember that bar? That is so cute. It was all dressed up and had all the lights and everything, and snow falling.

You can’t remember the name of it.

Instead of thinking of what you can't do, focus on what you can do. Share on X

No idea, but right across the street 188 Lafayette.

That’s all you need to know. We have some Peloton studio closures coming up in April.

There are going to be two different closures occurring. One of them is going to be at the London Studio. This is important because that one stops on April 6th. The Peloton Studios New York closes from April 7th through April 13th. Isn’t that interesting? I thought that was weird that they were not on the same days.

It almost makes me wonder if there’s some sort of tech update. The team is going in, shutting down one or two units,  and then when they’re done, they’re bringing them to the States and doing the same thing, and so they’re using the same team.

That could be.

That’s a hypothesis.

I didn’t say the start date for the London one, so March 31st through April 6th, and then PSNY is from April 7th through the 13th. I think that is a solid thought process. What’s confusing is that in 2024, for the first time ever, Peloton put out all of their closures at one time. They figured out that was a bad idea because they moved things too much. Now they’re back to, “We’re only going to tell you a little bit at a time. Dribs and drabs are all you get. That’s it.” Now we’re back to one at a time. I thought that was interesting too. Yeah, Sstudio maintenance, I don’t know. Maybe it’s when all the instructors get together, but then that wouldn’t be at two different times so that doesn’t make sense unless they’re only having a London one, and a US one maybe. I don’t know.

Who knows? Pace Targets have been added to Running in the app for people.

This is a deal. You have to remember that Pace Targets are like Powers Zones for the tread, but you can only use them if you have a tread. A lot of people run that don’t have a tread. They have now rolled out Pace Targets for the app.

If you have a non-Peloton piece of equipment, you can now utilize Pace Target.

That’s a huge deal. You can still save your level. They have the ability to change the levels on the app now, and you’re able to see all the different classes. In the app, it has a little graph in the bottom right-hand corner. That’s how you know it’s Pace Target. If you click on it, you’ll see Pace Target, but if you don’t click on it, it’s just going to show a little graph in the bottom right-hand corner. This is important for people who want to run outside too because you need this class fast. I assume we’re going to see the ability to filter on those and maybe even different kinds of Pace Target classes. This is a very big deal for the running community. I’m very excited to see it.

I know this isn’t Peloton but it’s workout, exercise, or fitness-adjacent, which makes it Peloton-adjacent. That’s my point. On Instagram, Tatum Brandt posted an interesting piece about the gym as a clinic business model.

This was from a company called Fitt Insider. The interesting thing is we are seeing several gyms that have started doing different clinic things. Now it’s no longer just a gym. For example, we’re seeing glucose monitors show up at gyms. We’re seeing Ozempic showing up at gyms. That’s interesting to me because I’ve been saying to the company that I work for for a long time that we need to get on these GLP ones, not to be the ones prescribing them because that’s not our place, but to help people because these are not going anywhere.

Maximize their efficacy.

You want people to eat well. Gyms have the same thought and they’re like, “If they’re already here working out, let’s get them to the next stage,” because it’s the weight loss and the eating part that people struggle with so much. If you already have them at a gym, they’re already doing the hardest part, the working out part. Now we have to work on their nutrition and turbocharge it. I think it’s fascinating. Do you have any other thoughts about this?

I find it a little disconcerting. Over the last twenty years, weight loss has transitioned into wellness. These places going down this road that it’s not their natural setting give me pause about how good they’re going to be at it. There’s a lot of BS out there in the wellness world. If your gym latches on to some BS, you’re going to be like, “The gym must have vetted it.” That’s not necessarily true. It’s getting very close to your gym offering medical advice, which I find disconcerting.

It is disconcerting. Here’s the thing. Although I don’t think MetPro should be offering prescriptions to Ozempic or any GLP ones, specifically, it looks like these gyms are going to be providing it. That’s different, and one of the reasons that’s different is there are so many compounding pharmacies that are putting forth these prescriptions because these medications are so hard to get through the normal channel.

You have tons and tons of these pharmacies that are compounding the medication, so you can get to it. Nothing wrong with that. There are a lot of amazing compounding pharmacies that are great and reputable. However, how do you know which is? Even a chain like this could vary from place to place. That worries me a lot. I don’t know how a person knows the difference.

They’re trying to compete with Medspas. Medspas do a lot of good things. I don’t want to knock that at all, but they’re not your doctor. At Medspas, they’re also providing hormones, and so are some of these clinics. They’re calling them clinics inside these gyms. They are providing hormones for people. That’s terrifying.

I know people are going to get mad when I say this, but as you watch the government being dismantled and the FDA is firing people left to right, they are ostensibly to oversee and protect us from fly-by-night snake oil, then you see this on the rise at the same time as regulations are on the decline, check back in five years and see what pro-public is telling you about it.

Just to be clear, I don’t have a problem with hormones. I don’t have a problem with continuing continuous glucose monitors. None of those. I have used some of these myself, but I have also used them in a conversation with a doctor, and it’s very integrated into those conversations.

I know that these places are ostensibly bringing in medically-trained personnel. In a world where it’s getting more and more difficult to find those medically trained personnel, you also have to wonder when you’re trying to expand that.

You’re trying to scale it and grow it fast. This is not a knock against medicine. We believe in science over here, but when you’re growing any business and it starts growing fast and you start scaling, mistakes get made. Things happen. Now put that in a medical sense, that’s scary. We thought this was super fascinating and wanted to share with you what’s going on out there in the world. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

Coming up after this, we’re going to have instructors in the news. Adrian Williams had a very disconcerting thing happen to him at a sporting event. We will tackle that, coming up next. Stick around.

‐‐‐

Before we start this, we should probably warn people that this is a post that Adrian Williams made about a racist incident that he endured at a basketball game. If that’s not something you’re in the headspace for, fast forward, check back later, or whatever you need to do. Adrian Williams had this post on Instagram that I will let you read because your voice sounds more like Adrian Williams.

Sure. He and I are like the same Z’s. He did post this on his Instagram stories. I know that you can’t go and find it now, that’s because it was on a story. Those expire after 24 hours, but this is what he said. For context, he was at a college basketball game and this part is in quotes. “Someone said this to me yesterday while I was watching college basketball, ‘I didn’t know they let you all sit with us. You know that’s about to change, right?’” Adrian went on to say, “It’s not the comment that bothered me. It’s this idea that we’re regressing as a society in front of my eyes. I am 100% okay and unbothered, but that is a privilege and for others, it is not the same.” I am very upset by this.

I’m not naive enough to think that there aren’t racists in the world. Obviously, that has never gone away, but to see someone like that so emboldened.

That is also frightening,

Especially to someone who could snap you like a twig.

It’s not okay on any level for anyone to say to anybody. Who goes and picks a fight with somebody who looks like Adrian Williams?

The guy is jacked beyond all belief. I can’t imagine that 95% of people in America would be able to win that fight, but the jaw-dropping amount of entitlement attached to saying something like that.

I was going to use the word audacity. It is next level. I’m glad that he is okay and unbothered. I genuinely am, but it is very disconcerting. He is a thousand percent correct to say it’s this idea that we’re regressing as a society in front of his eyes. I feel that on a lot of levels. I know I’m not alone. I get messages from people every day. I know there are a lot of people who think we’re stupid and overreacting. I hope that you are fine, White man, because the rest of us are not okay.

That’s just wow.

I would be bothered if somebody said something like that to me. I don’t know how I’d react, but I know it would not be good. Anyway, we wanted to share that because that happened to a Peloton instructor. What I mean by that is if that can happen to somebody who looks like Adrian and has the privileges that Adrian has because of his position with Peloton, social media, and all that, it can happen to anybody. Don’t be fooled that we were in a place where number one, it never got better, but it’s getting worse. That’s concerning.

Don't give up. Focus on what you can control. There's always going to be a bright, beautiful rainbow at the end of the tunnel. You just have to keep pushing forward. Share on X

Moving on to better news, Alex Toussaint has a brief cameo in the new MCU movie Captain America, Brave New World.

About 45 minutes into the movie, Harrison Ford, who plays President Ross, is on his Peloton bike. At first, you hear Alex’s voice but it does swivel around. You do see Alex on screen for two seconds or three seconds.

Maybe even a little bit longer. I was surprised by how long they held on the class portion of that scene.

President Ross/Harrison Ford then hopped off the bike and was like, “I finished it all. I did all 5 miles.” I was like, “5 miles with a 15-minute class? What are you talking about?” It’s good for Peloton to have that exposure in the middle of such a big movie. I do have to say though that this was not my favorite movie and it was not my favorite Marvel movie.

It was pretty bland.

I missed the fun banter in Marvel movies. That was the thing that I enjoyed about them, and it was severely lacking.

I love the Marvel movies, but I thought this one was one of the weaker entries.

I think it was the writing because the acting was great. Anthony Mackie did an amazing job. Harrison Fors did an amazing job.

We like the TV show. We like the Winter Soldier.

That was a great show that had more banter.

It did have more banter. We know you like the banter. That’s the only reason you’re with me.

It’s not the only reason.

I can’t say the other one. Coming up after this, we will tackle all the content that you need to be sampling. Sit tight.

‐‐‐

It is time for the TCO Top 5, where you tell us your favorite classes and we tell them back to you. We welcome the return of Helper Bees Tina.

I can’t believe she’s sitting in a hospital and she’s like, “I want to work on this because I want to not think for a while about all this stuff.”

You were like, “I don’t care. Write The TCO Top 5.” You are a taskmaster.

I am a taskmaster.

She was like, “I need something to take my mind off of everything. This is one of those things and I would like to continue doing it. We were like, “Yes, please.” That would be great if you have the bandwidth for it. I’m the same way. When things are weird. I remember during the middle of the divorce, I was doing TV interviews about the Oscars for film critics’ stuff.

Many people were like, “What the hell?”

Two minutes before we go on air, you’re getting a report from the private investigator, and it’s like, “Hang on. I have to do a TV spot.”It’s something to take your mind off. I get it.

Everybody’s different. I’m grateful that it works differently for you. It works differently for Tina. It makes me happy to see her have a little bit of a break and a little happiness,

A little bit of normalcy. With that being said, your favorite Powers Zone class.

By far, it was the 120-minute Power Zone Endurance, Two For One, that happened with Christian Vande Velde and Matt Wilpers. Many people wrote about this. Carrie McGillivray Logan said it had over 4,000 people participating live. That’s impressive because it’s starting at 6:00 AM, our time on Saturday morning. Type-A Matt was having a hard time chatting with chatty Christian and his lack of numbers which is hilarious because even you make fun of Matt’s math. It was all good fun and they’re great together and everybody loved this class. I’m glad that it got to happen and I love seeing the long format.

Number two, your favorite interval rides.

This was taught by Christine on February 6th. It was a 30-minute interval ride. Mindy Jensen loves this ride. She said she’s so happy that CDE has started programming this type of ride, “There’s no way I would push myself that hard without the coaching and programming of these rides.” I did not say that well at the beginning. Christine has started programming SIT, which is Sprint Interval Training, which is a key way to exercise when you’re going through perimenopause or menopause.

Christine has been very focused on this. She’s a fan of Stacy Sims. She follows. She also is an ambassador or a front person for Midi, which is a great resource for any women who are like, “My doctor doesn’t help me with the things that I need, Mindy.” It’s covered by insurance. I’m just saying. The Sprint Interval Training is awesome and this is one of Christine’s newest classes.

She’s done several of them at this point. There are “only” six 30-second intervals that are then followed by three minutes of rest in the ride. If you do those intervals correctly, as Mindy says, you’re going to need those three minutes. She’s right. That is a fantastic class to do especially if you’re looking to try Sprint Interval Training.

Number three, your favorite run.

This was taught by Becs Gentry on February 15th. It was a 45-minute 2000 run. Karen Smith nominated this class. It’s a Pace Target class. Karen said, “The Pace Targets are sneaky hard, and a couple of them with Becs and you may well die. They motivate you to push just that little bit harder by bumping to the higher end of your zone. I love that Peloton seems to be focusing on these this year. Looking forward to many more.” I very much agree with that.

Number four, your favorite strength class.

Rebecca Kennedy made the list again. I mean no shock. Is strength and it was a 20-minute core. This was back away. This was in August 2021. Karen Brady recommended this class with good reason. She said, “It’s a fun dance routine that made working on the core a lot more fun than just planks and crunches. I returned to this class a lot as it lives in my bookmarks and it’s a beginning-level class.” That’s nice.

Finally, your unstackable and it’s a ride.

This is the superhero ride. Anthony Mackie, our current Captain America joined Alex Toussaint on the bike in the studio live. Michael Davern said when he nominated this class, “Over 52,000, people. You can’t be wrong. This class was a great way to celebrate the newest Marvel movie. It was more than just a fun-themed class.” Michael provided a great summary. He said that the ride had star power, having Anthony Mackie, of course, and then riding alongside and being occasionally interviewed by Alex. “What a tough class. The warm-up started out with resistance in the 40s and never backed down from there. Anthony was surprisingly good on the bike, matching Alex stride for stride. I’ve been riding for five years and I rarely get to 70s cadence while standing up, and Anthony was right there from the jump.” He’s a superhero. The workouts they do are crazy.

They give you your own personal trainer because they know you have to look a certain way in that costume and move a certain way. Even if he isn’t a regular on an exercise bike, he’s in peak physical condition.

This article went up today and other people started chiming in immediately to say that they thought that Anthony Mackie was a Peloton user. I saw clips of this ride. He was not going slow. He could have turned down the resistance. We weren’t there, but he did not seem to be having any issues on that bike. It’s pretty cool.

I don’t think he would. Unlike your previous Captain America. He’s not on performance-enhancing drugs. Sam Wilson didn’t take the Super Soldier serum, unlike Steve Rogers. I’m just throwing that out there.

That’s a great point.

We will now take a look at this week at Peloton and see what is in store for you, or by the time you hear this, what was in store for you?

This is funny because I have to start off by making fun of Peloton on this one real quick. There was a 60-minute strength class with Adrien, which everybody is excited about and should be, but Peloton said it was Friday, February 18th, which hasn’t happened in five years. It’s Friday, the 21st. Our 10th anniversary.

I need to go get something.

Yes, you should. This strength class will be very amazing. Everybody loves full-body strength, but 60 minutes is killer and it’s Adrian. He’s probably working out and still pissed over what that guy said to him.

Although he seemed pretty chill.

I’m still pissed about it.

You should be. We also have a Sia run with Mariana Fernandez.

We’re all a little confused as to why this is showing up now and not back when they had the Sia.

Did they forget it was there?

I have no idea. I remember the time Mariana posted about it. She had a special outfit. It was Brittany Allen. I didn’t know that it wasn’t on the schedule with the rest of them, but I think it’s super weird that they’re including this now and still get Peloton. I don’t know what’s happening over there.

There’s also a Flow and Let Go with Aditi Shah.

That’s going to be premiering on the 22nd of February. These are nice because they have slowed down. You can slow down because you’re flowing and letting go.

Ally Love is back with Sundays with Love. I know people dig those.

It appears that these are occurring about once a month now. This one is going to be on Sunday, February 23rd, and it will be at noon Eastern.

There are the things that didn’t make those lists, but we’re still tracking.

Black History Month is still happening. Some new Black History Month classes dropped. There was a run with Marcel and a very popular ride with Ally. That was that Soul Ride that everybody was raving about, and there was a run with Kirsten. We already know that Christian made a return to PSNY because he did that class with Matt. He also had his very own ride that he did on Valentine’s Day, which was a 60-minute ride, the day before. Hosky was everywhere at PSNY because at the beginning of Valentine’s Day, Matty had a Walk and Talk, and Jon Hosking walked in the middle of the class. He was like, “Hi, how are you doing?”

That’s a walk and talk.

He then showed up. He was in the studio for Matt’s Country Ride. I took that one because I have to get 100 miles in this month for my challenge. I took that ride and I was like, “There’s Hosky. How about that?” He then came in the next day for Christian and Matt’s two-hour ride. He did that class. While he was there, he also led three classes, not to mention all day on Valentine’s Day, he walked around, giving roses to people, and very bad pickup lines to everyone.

Making the most of his trip.

Everyone was expecting that he was going to make an announcement and he was going to be on the bike. Not happening. I’m not saying it’s never happening, but it did not happen.

The announcement did not happen.

The person who admins his group was like, “That’s a stupid rumor. It’s never happening. You’re all dumb.” I don’t know. Maybe there’s no truth to it. People thought though because he’s taking so many classes.

I will say this to the person who runs that group.

He didn’t say it that rude.

I know, but if you’re that confident, say it before the anticipated announcement. Not after.

I have to defend this person. They have posted that many times. I was just unaware. I was unaware of it because there are too many groups for me to keep up on things, but he has said that many times.

So then, I retract. We already talked about the Captain America ride, and then we have more Black History Month rides.

In week three, we’re going to have Platinum Producers Hip Hop run with Adrian, and Supreme Soul with Tunde on February 20th. There’s also going to be a tie-in with the Artist Series this week, Kirk Franklin. That’s going to be a Gospel Glow ride with Cliff.

With the gospel guy.

Yeah, he is. They’re going to be live on Instagram together.

When we went to House of Blues and did the Gospel Brunch, that’s a Kirk Franklin Gospel.

I didn’t even know that. That was very delightful.

The Clip Out | Enuma Iyob | Peloton Kettlebell Classes

It was fun. It’s the closest you will ever get me in church. It has to be Disney-adjacent. That’s the only way I’m going.

That’s the only way you do a lot of things.

There’s a little bit more, coming up next.

Alex is going to be back to his Monday night hip hop slot on February 24th with a Black History Month class and the Platinum Producers. People have been wondering where Erik Jäger is. He shared on his IG that he is traveling in Brazil, but he has dropped a bunch of OD content. He has provided several structured plans with a variety of fitness goals. If you go to Instagram, you can see that and he will be off the live schedule for two months. That’s his offseason. If you are missing Erik, he left lots of stuff for you to do.

Finally, we have one birthday this week. It is DJ John Michael, who celebrates his birthday on February 24th.

Happy birthday, DJ John Michael.

Happy birthday. Coming up after this, we’ll have our interview with Enuma. Stick around.

‐‐‐

Joining us via the magic of Zoomtube is Enuma Iyob. Enuma, how’s it going?

It’s nice to talk to you all.

It’s nice to talk to you. I’m so excited you’re here. I always like to start these conversations by understanding how you got into Peloton. What does that look like in your journey? How did you decide, “I got to have this?”

Finding Peloton And Falling In Love With Fitness

I started in 2019. One of my girlfriends from college, anything that she does, she becomes a fanatic of it. She was like, “I love the Peloton bike and I have the tread.” I’m like, “You went in and invested in both a tread and a bike of equipment.” I’m not judging. It’s a safe place. I was like, “Cool. You do you.” We were pregnant at the same time that same year. I was like, “I’m going to have to stop doing my OTF.” There are three months of no exercise.

I was like, “Can you tell me a little bit more about Peloton?” At first, I was like, “Cool. You do you. Do your thing.” Once I got toward the end of my pregnancy, I was like, “Tell me more.” She walked me through to FaceTime and showed me the tread because she knew I was a runner. I was like, “That is very nice.” It was like the Tesla of treadmills. I’ve heard of the Woodway.

She has the Tread+ it sounds like.

Yes. I was mind-blown.

Did she buy the bike and the tread simultaneously?

Yes. Whatever she does, she does 100%. Her license plate changed and everything. She went all in.

I have no room to talk.

No judgment. I said, “That’s pretty cool.” She would post videos and talk about the workouts she was doing and the instructors. I wasn’t interested until I got towards the end of my pregnancy since I was doing Orangetheory. Once that came around, I was like, “I need something. Can you tell me a little bit more about this new obsession that you have going on?”

She did the FaceTime and showed me the tread. I was ready to swipe the card at that time. My husband was like, “Hold the brakes here.” My husband ended up getting me the tread as a push present for the pregnancy. I was due in November. The bike we didn’t get until a month before COVID, so early 2020. That’s pretty much how I got introduced to Peloton. Once I joined, I had the same experience where I went from 0 to 100. I was like, “It wasn’t just her. It’s a thing.”

It’s very much a thing.

You weren’t too far behind. They’re great products.

My husband said, “What happened to you?” I’m like, “Either it’s just the hormones from this pregnancy or these are amazing products.” It was a combination.

I was going to say, “Or both.”

You got the tread towards the end of 2019 and then the bike at the beginning of 2020. When COVID hit, you had to feel like a genius.

I was like, “Thank you.” I didn’t have the Tread+ until the end of 2019 and then I got the bike. COVID hit in March 2020. I got the bike at the end of January 2020. I didn’t have to do the crazy weight or any of that. It came. They took their time. They’re like, “Do you want a selfie in front of your new bike?” Now, they’ll toss the bike in your house and it’s not even set up. Before, they take a picture and thumbs up in front of the van. It was a whole experience.

The delivery trucks are like the ice cream man. You’re running down the street after it.

You were during the time when Peloton was delivering all of their products. You had a true Peloton delivery. We live in Missouri, so we’ve never had that opportunity. It’s always been through a third party, even when we had a store here in St. Louis. That was nice when we had that for a brief time. We never had that. I was so jealous of everybody. They got to see the Peloton truck pull up and take the selfie. I was like, “That would have been so nice.”

It was part of the experience. I was grateful that I joined right before then. Even with customer service, there were a couple of questions that I had, so I wasn’t paying attention. I was so in awe of the equipment. I had to call them a couple of days later and I’m like, “How does this work? What happens if I don’t press it?” Now, I can’t even get ahold of them. Customer service is not the same as it was before. I was very grateful that I joined when I did.

I can completely understand that. When we were messaging back and forth, you mentioned that you had starts and stops with Peloton. So far, it sounds like it’s been super smooth. You were all in from day one but I know there’s more to the story. I want to hear more about that.

The Impact Of Pregnancy And Postpartum On Fitness

Pregnancy and I was doing Orangetheory. To give you a little background of why one of the stops happened, I ran track in college and then didn’t want to stop that momentum. I had so much fun. I feel like I still have more to give. I had another friend who was a marathoner. She was like, “Why don’t you do a half marathon with me?”

Being from a sprinter and jumps background because I did the heptathlon, I didn’t know you needed to hydrate, eat a bunch of food to burn it off an hour later, or the shoes. It’s all completely over my head. I went out and did this half marathon. I survived but was like, “Why would someone put themselves through this pain?” I did it again like an idiot. I went through the pain multiple times.

At this point, we fast forward six years later and I’ve put myself through pain, no PT, no hydration, and all that good stuff. My body is pretty much hanging by a thread. I went and carried a baby with a body that was falling apart. I don’t know what the medical term is. Not hip dysplasia but something along those lines where everything was jacked up.

I couldn’t even jog or run without any pain. I had pelvic floor dysfunction after the pregnancy so I had a whole bunch of work that I needed to do before I could even touch the Tread+ or the bike. It sucked for me because I got the tread right after the baby was born. I started doing a little walking. Emma had her Crush Your Core. I was doing a little bit of that.

The Clip Out | Enuma Iyob | Peloton Kettlebell Classes

After I hit the eight-week appointment with the OB, she was like, “Hold up. Pump the brakes. You shouldn’t be doing anything based on the complaints you have.” That’s when my first halt happened and I couldn’t do anything. She’s like, “You need to get into PT ASAP.” I got through two PT sessions and then the world shut down.

Here I am with pretty much a piece of paper of the exercises she told me to do and was like, “We’ll talk when the world opens back up.” We’re thinking it’s going to be a 2 or 4-week thing. As you know, it was not a 2 or 4-week thing. It was very defeating for somebody active their whole life. They now have a baby and they’re like, “How do I stay active when they’ve told me I can’t stay active?”

That sounds so frustrating.

At that point, I still had my subscriptions, charging me monthly. I wasn’t using it. Being on social media helped keep me sane. I was like, “I’ll come back to this eventually.” Instructors were posting fun content in their homes where they were still teaching and trying to keep people going through the pandemic. I was tuning into some of that. That helped morale-wise with Peloton and not falling off completely. That was the first stop.

Navigating Peloton Through Injuries And Setbacks

It was early 2021 when I was going back again doing PT religiously in a facility and getting back in shape. I was like, “Let me start getting back into Peloton again.” Something about me is I forgot all the hard work I’d put into all the PT and didn’t do warmups. I’m like, “I’m good.” I jumped on the tread with no warmup or stretching. I ended up with another injury again. I was like, “This is frustrating.” I would start and go up fast, from 0 to 100, and then get injured.

In 2021, I was probably doing workouts three days a week but it wasn’t anything too crazy. I would do one day on the bike, one day on the tread, and then one lifting class or something like that. In 2022, I got pregnant again. This was around when Kirsten Ferguson came. I was like, “This is exciting. She’s a mom too.” I connected with her. I was like, “Maybe I can hold on to that and do her walks.” She started doing the walks plus runs. That motivated me and got me back again doing that 2022 timeframe.

I had my son and I was like, “I’m going to focus the rest of this year building back and getting strong.” I started taking a lot of Adrian’s, Rad’s, and Jess Sim’s classes. I was focusing solely on that. I was taking Kirra and Mariana’s stretching classes and yoga. I was honing in on hip mobility and all the things that I neglected for years. In 2023, I was like, “Now that I’ve done that, my goal for June is to run my very first road race.”

I signed up for a 5K and it was in Baltimore. It was called the Baltimore Women’s Classic 5K. I had that goal. I was like, “This is what I’m going to focus on from January through April.” I still was doing my PT every day. I never neglected it again. I was warming up and doing cool-downs. Believe it or not, that was never me. If you told me ten years ago, “We’ll leave you warming up and cooling down,” I’ve been like, “Absolutely no.”

I’m doing all the things, checking off all the boxes, and seeing positive outcomes of being able to continue and not having to stop every five seconds. I got through the race and was super happy. I continued going on along with my Peloton journey. Fast forward again, in January 2024, I was training for a half in November but I started in January. I got a stress fracture in my foot at the end of February and early March. I was like, “Are you kidding me? I can’t catch a break.”

That was the last stop I had and hopefully the last ever. That was honestly the hardest one because I was doing everything right this time but minus a couple of things. I didn’t give myself breaks in between the classes and listening to my body. How does this workout feel and things like that? That was the last halt and that halt took two months. I was out from March through June. That was very frustrating.

The Power Of Peloton Community And Staying Motivated

It was in my foot. I started swimming during that time and listening to meditations. Instead of thinking of what you can’t do, focus on what you can do. With Peloton, the beauty of the app is there’s so much content. I was like, “I can do meditation, stretching, even upper body strength, and core.” Let’s focus on what you can do. In 2024, they added the modality where you could even do an open run or walk. I could log cardio. I’m still feeling included and getting my check mark for the day. You feel like you’re doing something. It helped me stay on track and still feel like I was moving toward a goal, even though it wasn’t the goal I had set out for the beginning of the year.

After I got that green mark from the doctor in June 2024 to continue running again, I was like, “It’s not too late to go after that goal of the half marathon.” That was what I focused on pretty much that summer and I was able to achieve the goal. The moral of the long-winded story is don’t give up. Focus on what you can control. There’s always going to be a bright, beautiful rainbow at the end of the tunnel. You have to keep pushing forward. Don’t look back. That’s my two cents for that long-winded story.

She’s got a bike and a tread. She couldn’t use either. She took up swimming. That means triathlon.

She’s got to get a row. You could be a triathlete.

I could but I’m just going to clap for other people. I’m going to admire that one from afar.

It’s wonderful to have the focus of a training plan. It also takes up a lot of time. It’s also nice to not have a training plan. I do understand. I’ve been to both of those places. I still have a love-hate relationship with it.

Looking at what you have to do in the upcoming week gives you structure. It’s almost like good homework, not bad homework. It’s nice to wake up and do what you want to do with that day.

There’s good homework?

I know what she means. It’s the homework you enjoy. Tom’s like, “I never enjoy any homework.” I did.

I have to ask, what do you do for a living?

I’m a government contractor, IT consulting, so computers and project management.

It all makes sense. She’s a project manager by trade. The idea of good homework for the two of you makes total sense.

We are connected.

I was a Mass Communications major. I got to listen to old-time radio. That’s homework. I listen to Jack Benny.

I’m familiar. I often get lessons about pop culture I never asked for.

I went down a rabbit hole in the history of Shelley Fabares.

It’s not a 30-second history. It was long.

He got the long-winded version of the start and stops that I gave.

Yes, very much. I know everything Shelley Fabares ever did, acting-wise. It didn’t stick.

You’re ready for Trivia Night then.

Her idea of being ready for Trivia Night is bringing me.

Listen, I do the scores. I write down the numbers.

My handwriting is completely illegible.

I bring in all the answers and then occasionally when no one else at the table knows something like a country song, I got you. That’s all I got and everything I do. That’s about it at Trivia Night. I also bring great food besides that.

Teamwork makes the dream work.

Peloton Studio Experiences And Instructor Shoutouts

Through your Peloton journey, have you been to the studio since it reopened, since you came in at the end there?

Yes, I have, thankfully. The first time I went was in December 2023. That was for Jess Sims. We have this You Get 2 Crew ball. I went for the ball and said, “I might as well check out some classes while I’m there in New York for that weekend.” That was my first time. Once I went one time to the studio it was like Disney World. I was cheesing the entire time. I was hooked. That was another level of endorphins I didn’t even know I could possibly endure, going to the studio. It was something else.

I went back again twice in January. I was like, “Let me make sure it wasn’t a one-time fluke or something.” I went back again. I went eight times in 2024 and was like, “The New Year’s resolution for 2025 is to sit down and give other people the opportunity to enjoy it.” I was going so much. They had the Lulemon weekend. I went for that. I don’t know if you saw the videos but I’m a dancer. I made a fool of myself. It was the best time of my life.

Were you one of the people dancing when Adrian was out there?

Yeah. Me and him. Matt James and I were dancing together. I couldn’t sit down.

We played your video on the show. That was great. We loved it.

That’s hilarious. That’s so funny. That was me. My husband always laughs. He’s like, “You always say you’re not going to dance.” You’re right there smack in the middle.

You had a great time and that is all that matters.

It was the best time.

What is your leaderboard name?

It’s very hard. It’s my first and last name. I kept it simple. I like seeing my name when I’m running and I’m like, “You got this. You better run.” I had another name. It was Run Mama or something like that when I first joined. I was like, “This is cute,” but I like the accountability of seeing my name and that’s who identify with when I’m on the leaderboard. When I’m having a hard day, it’s like, “You show that for yourself. When you take that class again, it’s Enuma versus Enuma on the leaderboard.” That’s why I went and changed it back to my name. It’s Enuma Iyob. That’s the same with my Instagram, too. I keep everything consistent with the same name.

Favorite Peloton Instructors And Classes

I love the branding. I am curious about how often you get shoutouts, though. Your name is not a name that you see all the time. It’s not like Emily or something. Do you get a lot of shoutouts?

This is funny. Let’s start with a shout-out. Shout out to Alex Toussaint because anytime he gives me a shout-out, he’s like, “Molly, Jessica, Enuma.” He changes the beat. He makes sure he pronounces it perfectly. I’m like, “Thank you.” It’s funny because it’s like, “Molly, Jessica, Ashley, Enuma,” purposely. I’m like, “Thank you, Alex.” It’s always funny when I’m waiting like the first day of school. I’m like, “How’s it going to go?”

It’s almost funny for me when my friends text me, “Was that supposed to be your name?” I’m, “We’ll go with it. I heard it. I heard the effort.” Sometimes if it’s a HIIT class, they’re calling the name. I’m like, “Don’t choke. Keep running. I heard it. Thank you.” It’s funny. I’ve taken Jess Sims’ class in person and she pronounces my name well too. She’ll be, “Enuma.” They’ll leave the last name out because they know who I am. She and Alex are good with my name, and Marcel too. I’ve connected with them so it’s easier like, “Enuma is on the leaderboard.”

They’ve connected you as a person with your leaderboard name.

It’s not just a word.

It’s not just a leaderboard name. That makes sense. That’s awesome.

Some people try to act like they’re choked. I’m, “Don’t worry. I heard the shout-out. It was for me.”

I picture a world where there’s some other lady named Enuma. She’s like, “That was mine. You stole my shout-out.”

It’ll be hilarious. It’s yet to happen but my ears are ready just in case. The funny thing is I’ll usually tell my friends to join me for my milestone. Sometimes the instructors will pause and be like, “That’s yours. It’s coming.” They’re trying to figure out what to say. It cracks me up every time.

They have to prepare themselves.

It’s always funny.

It’s good that you can see the humor in it. I’m sure that gets frustrating sometimes. I don’t have problems with the pronunciation of my name so much, although some people struggle with if it’s O’Keefe or O’Keefee. I get that a lot but it’s the damn apostrophe.

That gets us messed up all the time.

The apostrophe is the worst on web forms. It’s awful.

Going out of the country with him is a nightmare because he’s also a junior. Between the apostrophe and the junior, it’s always a thing. My maiden name is Wishon and nobody can ever say that right. They make up things that are way too complicated. It’s super simple but people make it into this super complex thing every time. It’s happened since I was in grade school. It’s funny.

You get it.

The more unique a name is, the more trouble people will have.

How do they say our last name in Mexico all the time?

It’s always O’Keefe. They always address you.

That’s hilarious.

They’re always like, “Tom O’Keefe.” We’re like, “That’s us.”

After the first day, it’s like, “That’s fine. We’re the O’Keefe’s now. We’ll assimilate.”

If they pronounce it correctly, you won’t even turn around anymore.

That’s right. That’s what we call a first-world problem.

The Clip Out | Enuma Iyob | Peloton Kettlebell Classes

Do you have a preferred instructor?

It’s funny because I like doing a little bit of everything. The tread is my baby. I would say my number one in the tread is Jess Sims, Marcel, and Kirsten. Now that AT has joined the tread club, I like his classes there too. His Friday Club Bangers on the tread are fun. For cycling, AT is my number one on the bike. I love Camila’s classes. Who else do I take leaning towards on the bike?

I do Matt Wilper’s Power Zone classes and Tunde. I don’t have a favorite. I’m like that with anything. You ask me what my favorite food is, it’s pizza. I like a little bit of everything. It’s hard for me to pick one thing but I would say if I had to pick one person, if I’m being trapped in a hotel with an instructor, it would be Jess Sims. She’s my favorite.

She would entertain you, for sure.

We would entertain each other. The last time we had our strength class together, it was funny. I made her do a couple of dances.

Is there a row in your future?

In Orangetheory, I rode, It’s that exercise where it’s great but I could live without it. It is pretty. I’ve gone to the store in Tyson’s. I’ve seen it many times and I’m like, “This would be nice in our gym but it’s not a need.” It’s maybe a wishlist thing but it’s not something I’m buying right now.

Maybe if there’s a third kid, and then you have the pressure if there’s a fourth kid. You’ll always be a little bitter towards that kid because you would just get a Guide.

He gets the Tonal.

There you go. You’re like, “This one got me a tread. This one got me a bike. You just got me a Guide.”

I can order that off Amazon.

That’s $45. Big deal. Pay for your own college. Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to join us. We appreciate it. Before we let you go, remind everybody where they can find you in all the places.

You can find me on Instagram. It’s @EnumaIyob. That’s the same with my leaderboard name on the Peloton app. With Facebook, it’s the same thing too. I made it easy.

Good branding.

Thank you for having me, too.

We appreciate it. It was a lot of fun chatting with you and getting to know you.

Likewise. I hope I run into you guys at the studio or on the leaderboard.

That would be a lot of fun. Hopefully, we do.

‐‐‐

I guess that brings this episode to a close. Until next week, where can people find you?
