Irene Kaymer Exits Peloton…Again Plus Our Interview With Angela Mielke

Welcome to the Clip Out episode 401.

That was quite a celebration we had for our 400th episode. If you missed it, Oprah stopped by, Joe Biden stopped by. He doesn’t have anything else to do these days. If you see him, don’t ask him about it because he will not remember.

Neither will Oprah.

How’s our fundraiser doing?

It is at $2,800. People have been so generous with their donations. I appreciate that. It’s Mason’s next treatment today. He has to go every Wednesday. I haven’t heard from Tina today, but she was hoping that it was going to be a situation where he went in and got his treatment, and they got to go back home. That’s what we’re all crossing our fingers for, that all his counts and everything was good. If anything was off, they would admit him again. It’s been so nice that they’ve been able to be home. Mason is still fighting off the flu, so he’s continuing with this cough. The cough is still making it hard for him to get sleep., They’re glad that they’ve been able to be at home. When you are in your own bed, it makes a big difference. He’s still not exactly 100% sure. It’s going to be a long ride. It’s a two-and-a-half-year treatment plan.

They’re staring at the barrel for that. That’s a long road.

It is, especially for a kid who was scheduled to graduate high school this year. When you think about life at that age and how three months until you start college, it seems like years, and multiply that out. I know that he’s been in good spirits about it considering the situation, but I would be nuts if it were me. He must be a strong kid.

What pray tell do you have in store for people?

We have an interview with Peloton member, Angela Mielke. She’s going to tell us all about her Peloton journey. She’s going to share with us the groups she’s in and how she came across those groups. It was a fun conversation. We’re also going to talk about some Peloton news. Peloton has launched a new quiz on their website about how to find the best workout for you. They also have added new Apple health and fitness items that can be tracked on your app. We’re also going to talk about the update to the Lulu glow-up studio. We have a visit from Dr. Jenn and we’re going to talk about Dr. Jen’s favorite recovery tools. Irene Kaymer is leaving Peloton again.

This is not a repeat.

This is not old news we happened upon. She’s leaving again.

It’s like reading the article and you’re scrolling up to look at the date.

It’s like how Yahoo in particular is so bad about old news. When I saw this, I genuinely was like, “Again? Really? Okay.” The big news is Alex Kowalski is now a tread instructor. We have kettlebells that landed this week. A lot of big Peloton news has hit. We have a celebrity sighting. We’re going to talk about new content hitting, so lots of hits.

Before we get to all that, shameless plugs. Don’t forget we’re available on Apple Podcasts, iHeart, and TuneIn. Wherever you find a podcast, you can find us. Spotify, we have to say that or else.

Please. Spotify pays us nothing.

We pay them.

I don’t want people to think that we get anything from Spotify.

We pay them so we don’t have to hear commercials. Anyway, while you’re there, be sure and follow us so you never miss an episode. Maybe leave us a review. If you can’t get enough of us. There’s a whole other show we record over on Patreon at Patreon.com/TheClipOut, where we talk about all the things we didn’t have time to get to in the main episode. We will be talking about the major instructor who is going to be in PSL.

That’s in London, for people not in the know.

If you live in London, it’s your chance to meet somebody big. If you don’t and you have some frequent flyer miles, this could be your moment.

The Clip Out | Angela Mielke | Full-Time Job

It’s a lot easier to get into the London Studio than it is on the NY Studio.

It is, so that could be your end run. You have to check that out. We’re going to talk about the team classes, and how there are more of them, but we don’t know why, and only for some people. We have some updates about things we talked about last week, trying to figure out what the hell Capital One Cafe is. People are coming up with the wrong theories. Someone gives us some guidance, but they’re also confused. We talked about why Mariana’s Sia artist series class came out so late. We have some updates on that, and other places you can find instructors and whatnot.

They’ve been busy. This was a busy week for the instructors.

Our Patreon is $5 a month. It gets you all the bonus content. It gets you ad-free episodes and our undying gratitude. It’s a way to help out the show. There are some expenses tied up to all this, so if you can, it’s greatly appreciated. We also have a YouTube, YouTube.com/TheClipOut, where you can watch all of these episodes. We have a newsletter that you can sign up for at TheClipOut.com. We will send you the links and stuff when I remember to do it. I’m doing these out of order now I’m all discombobulated. Facebook.com/TheClipOut, where you can see things up to date on things, and ReelSpoilers.com. There’s all that. Let’s dig in. Shall we?

We shall.

Peloton launched a new quiz that will tell you which Muppet you are.

No, it’s not about Muppets. For a long time, on the Peloton page website, they had a quiz about finding the instructor most suited for you. Now they have updated the quiz, It’s a new quiz and it helps you find your next fitness goal.

What are your goal options? Do you know?

No. I didn’t take the quiz.

I was wondering because some people’s goal might be to lose weight, so to have a Peloton quiz be like, “You need to lose weight.”

There are some pictures on our page. This is the question that’s on there, “Which fitness mantra speaks to you the most?” They have several of them. “Great things rarely come from sitting and comfort zone,” that’s a Ben Alldis quote. It’s like that, and then, “Here are the five fitness goals that you could match with, running a 10K, going low-impact, pushing your PR, mastering a new move, and setting a stretch streak.” As you can see, it had nothing to do with weight.

I don’t begrudge people who want to lose weight. I still would like to lose some weight, but I also know Peloton shies away from being a weight loss tool.

As they should. That’s the right call and I get that. The only thing that I’ve seen even remotely close to that is you can set one of your personal goals. Now you can do a personalized workout plan. One of the things that you can use as your goal for that personalized workout plan is getting lean. That’s how they say it, leaner.

That’s how Tonal says it. It’s similar to, “They are notoriously hard.” It’s definitely not an unstackable. That’s a typical place for Fitness Outlets to be in because it’s very gosh these days to refer to weight loss like that, but there are still lots of people that that’s what they’re looking to do, so you don’t want to shame the people who aren’t.

You also don’t want to shame the people who are. You are going to leave them out.

Yes, so that’s a tough needle to thread.

It is. I do think though that it does make sense. Some people might want to be healthier and maybe even reduce body fat, but don’t necessarily care what the scale says. I think that’s probably a better tact to take. I do think that Peloton is in the right and so is Tonal, just to be clear, for saying things like, “Get lean.” It’s so subjective.

We were talking about how we recently celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. I saw a picture from our wedding day. It’s funny because I know exactly what I weigh on our wedding day, which is 5 pounds less than I weigh now. I probably look like I weigh 15 or 20 pounds less. You can’t always trust to scale. You don’t want to get too fixated on it, especially at the beginning of a fitness journey like that. For most people, it’s the simplest metric to track.

I do agree with that as well. For women in particular, it’s such a tricky thing because traditionally, there are not as many women who are very comfortable with lifting weights and getting leaner through lifting weights. That is changing. It is headed in the direction that it should be. Throughout history, people have said, “I would like to be healthier.” That was a code for, “I need to lose weight.” It never involved lifting weights. That is a very new thing. Some people still have a block around their brain about how I could weigh more, but look and feel leaner.

Peloton is a great equipment to have if you have kids to look after or if you have a full-time job. Share on X

It’s a difficult thing to wrap your head around.

That example that you gave is a good visual example of that. I think that everybody should aim to gain muscle because it’s disturbing how much muscle we lose as we get older. It’s so disturbing.

It’s funny when you talk about how women are hesitant to lift weights. By and large, painting with a broad brush, that’s changing. I think our society has forgotten that it wasn’t that long ago that men were the same way.

I listened to this podcast one time. It ended up being about the history of the guy who discovered weightlifting. In the beginning, people were like, “Don’t do that to your body. Your body can’t handle that. Don’t do it.” That’s what they thought about lifting weights. The people that were “bodybuilders” were like an underground cabal of weirdos where people were like, “No.” That’s why when you see an old movie, Superman looks big and broad-chested, but he’s not jacked. He doesn’t get jacked until the ‘80s.

That makes sense because that is when that boom occurs. It was after the ‘70s when you started to see that.

When the first Pumping Iron came out, that’s when that broke out. That’s when Lou Ferrigno and Arnold Schwarzenegger became celebrities. Until then, it was very much underground like you’re probably damaging your body.

It wasn’t that long ago that they thought when women were running, their uterus was going to fall out. A lot has changed and that is good.

It was a cheap way to get a hysterectomy if you needed one.

That’s terrible.

 No copay.

It doesn’t even make sense. You think all you have to do is jiggle it and all your goods are going to fall out. Come on.

If it was that easy to discombobulate things, we wouldn’t need contraception.

I was talking to a person who was saying to me that they were unsure about using creatine because they had heard that it can bulk you up. There’s so much out there that’s misinformation or old information. Creatine is not bad. That’s one of the good ones. Lots of research. We got way off on a tangent. It’s 14 minutes in and we have not talked about Peloton. We have one item.

I have no idea what this next topic is about. There’s an image and there’s a tracker thing. I don’t understand what this is. It’s something about Apple Health and Fitness, and it’ll track your Peloton stuff. It has been, but now it does it more so.

Peloton has added some additional metrics that they are able to add to your Apple Health platform. What that means is that a lot of people who have the Apple platform are also using Apple Health. Apple Health can track things. It can track a lot of things, depending on what your equipment is. I have the Apple Watch, so it’s automatically tracking my heart rate whenever I do a workout and things like that.

When you do a workout with Peloton, it’s also able to say like, “Here’s how many calories Peloton says I burned. Here’s how long I worked out per Peloton.” Now, for the first time ever, you’re able to add cycling cadence directly from Peloton, cycling power directly from Peloton, and cycling speed directly from Peloton. That has never been a thing before.

There are apps that you can do. There are also little pieces that you can add to your bike power meters. You’ve heard people talk about power meters. There are things that you can add to your bike that then send this information. This is the first time Peloton has directly sent this information over to Apple Health.

Peloton just made all those things worthless.

I don’t know about that because then you still have the issue of all the bikes being calibrated differently. If you were trying to compare it to your outdoor bike versus your indoor bike, there could still be some issues there. Not only does it do the cycling cadence power and speed, but you also have your running power, your running speed, and your walking speed. It’s the first time for all of those. That’s pretty cool to be able to be on the tread or the bike, have that information, and put it automatically.

Lululemon has opened a glow-up studio in New York City.

The Clip Out | Angela Mielke | Full-Time Job

You have no idea that we talked about this already.

I thought we had.

I was just showing people what it looked like. That’s it. That’s all. It was an update.

For the audience, I guess it doesn’t do. If you’ve never gone to YouTube, this is your moment. Pull over to the side of the road right now.

It’s just to say that the studio is dead. It’s going to be a week that they’re going to have a whole bunch of trainers Come in, Peloton trainers included. They did the pop-up studio.

It was down the street from the Tonal.

It’s that one. This was just showing what it looks like. That was all, and a general update. I thought you would remember that.

I don’t listen.

I know. I’m well aware.

There was more info in there. There were two stories you included this week where I was like, “We did that last week.”

I was going to be like, “We also had an article about it,” but I wasn’t going to spend half an hour talking about it.

Coming up after this, we’re going to talk to Dr. Jenn. Somebody wanted to know about all of her personal recovery tools. She’s going to talk about things like ice baths, infrared, and cryotherapy.

You’ll get her insights and her personal thoughts about each one.

You’ll find out about that right after this.

Joining us once again via the magic of Zoom tube is Dr. Jenn Mann, licensed marriage, family, and child therapist, and Sports Psychology consultant. You may know her from VH1’s Couples Therapy with Dr. Jenn, VH1’s Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn, or her long-running radio show The Dr. Jenn Show. She’s written four bestselling books, including The Relationship Fix: Dr. Jenn’s 6-Step Guide to Improving Communication, Connection, and Intimacy. It’s Dr. Jenn.

Hello.

I should point out that your VH1 shows are now available on Fandango at Home.

Who knew? Thank you for letting me know and promoting. I appreciate that.

It’s funny because when you first started doing the show, we bought them and watched them all.

Being with a real-time instructor and all your friends on the leaderboard is exciting. It makes you feel you are right there with them. Share on X

We watched some of them, we went through them, and then we went through everything, all the way through.

I had to buy on Amazon Prime because that was the only place that they were available. To show our affection for you, I only buy shows and movies through Fandango at Home, formerly Vudu. Now I have the shows over here on this other platform.

I’m so honored. Thank you.

You are worth it.

Thank you. That show was such an incredible experience. I am so blessed that I was able to do real therapy with people who were receptive to opening up and going deep. It was such an incredible experience. All of the couples therapy and the season of family therapy was an amazing meaningful experience.

They’re good shows. Not to take away from the real world.

They have entertaining value because it’s fascinating to watch how people respond to the way you do therapy. It’s pretty cool.

It’s fascinating because these are the people whom you’re used to seeing on the reality shows that you watch. You see them in a different way. They aren’t doing the stick for the most part in the same way. Some of them still do and you’re like, “That stops now.” It’s interesting to see the people from these shows as they are not the characters.

It peels back the layers in a different way.

I’m always so grateful to season one. We were so lucky. The cast didn’t know what they were getting into. They had no idea and they were so raw and honest. All of these people were so open, vulnerable, and willing to do the work. It was incredibly meaningful and I will forever be grateful to that cast because they set the bar for all the future cast members.

I hate to switch gears now, but I have a great question here from Akeem. She was listening to a prior episode in which you were talking about different recovery tools that you are using, like workout recovery things that you’ve been doing, and processes that you’ve been using. Akeem was wondering if you could go into more detail and maybe rank your choices. There are so many things out there and Akeem is trying to figure out where she should put her investment into this.

Is it in terms of alternative treatment?

Yeah.

First of all, the quick and easy mental recovery for anyone who loves Peloton is the medication. I highly recommend it. All of the studies show that meditation is incredibly good for reducing anxiety, helping depression, and becoming more in tune with your body. For me, that’s a quick and easy freebie. If you’re already on the Peloton app it already exists and not everyone takes advantage of it. If you’re someone who has trouble sleeping because of anxiety, then try to sleep meditations. I do the sleep meditation every single night. As someone who has a very busy mind that is always going, it has been the greatest help to my sleep. I highly recommend it.

I’m assuming she is talking about infrared saunas, cold plunges, cryo, and all of that stuff. I’m not an MD, so I’m not coming from a purely medical stance. I’m a therapist, I do Sports Psychology, and I’m an obsessive researcher. First, you always want to check with your doctor and you also want to look at what’s available near you. There are also free versions of a lot of the things that I recommend. A lot of people love a cold plunge. It is the most difficult thing that I do regarding recovery. I’m going to put that out there. It is incredibly hard and it’s incredibly gratifying.

I’ll tell you the benefits of why I think it’s so important, but to back up for a second. A lot of people have pools or jacuzzis in their backyard. It’s the winter, so have the heat off. I have clients who have cold plunges in their own swimming pool. I want to give a caveat though, don’t do this alone. Make sure that you have someone there in case you get a cramp or you are feeling anxious and need help getting out of the pool or something like that. A lot of people will do a cold shower instead of a cold plunge, or fill their bathtub with cold water, and some ice and do a cold plunge there.

I have an Instagram post about alternative therapy treatment, and one of the things that I learned in my research is that doing a cold plunge increases dopamine by 500% and serotonin by 250%. That is worth it. If you are struggling with depression or anxiety, it’s worth it. The first time I did a cold plunge, I had this great guy named Brandon, who’s my guide to all of this stuff. What Brandon told me was, “You’re going to go in and you’re going to feel like you’re going to die. It will trigger your fight or flight thoughts that physiologically, you will want to jump out. If you can stay in for 90 seconds and breathe into it, you will shift into a different mode.”

What I love about that is that the experience of overcoming that high level of anxiety that is physiological allows you to have that experience under your belt. You’re always able to be like, “I did that. I can do this.” I do a six-minute cold plunge. My daughters who are 18, but started when they were 17, also do it. I want to put that out there. They are not the only teenagers I know who do it. Check with the pediatrician, check with the doctor. I’m incredibly proud of them that they are able to do it and they’ve gotten a lot of benefits from it as well.

Once you breathe into it, then you’ve got your other four and a half minutes left, and breathing into it. It gets you in a different state. One of my daughters says it clears her head. It’s one of the times for her when the noise of her busy mind shuts down. There are a lot of great benefits to cold plunging, but always make sure you check with your doctors, especially if you have a circulation issue or a neurological issue. That’s important.

The other thing I am a big fan of is the red sauna. If you don’t have a sauna at home, that’s a much more expensive option. Samantha Harris has a podcast called Your Healthiest Healthy. She has some coupons in her show notes for home LED saunas that she recommends. She is a health and wellness expert who does a lot of things to fight cancer and disease. She’s a cancer survivor. She had a double mastectomy. She was a host on Dancing With the Stars and an Emmy award-winning journalist who then went back to school after a cancer diagnosis, and then became a health and wellness specialist. It’s perfect for you guys to have on the podcast. She is incredible. She has a bunch of home versions of a lot of these things that she personally does.

The Clip Out | Angela Mielke | Full-Time Job

Those are the biggies. I love Cryo. If you have cryo near you or cryotherapy, I think it’s great. Andrew Huberman recommends 11 minutes a week of cold therapy. He recommends 20 minutes a day of heat therapy, which can be a little more challenging unless you have something at home that you can do. Those are amazing. I’m fortunate that I have access to a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, which is something I love. I find that I sleep well when I do it, but that’s a big stretch for a lot of people. Not everyone has access to something like that. The cold plunge and the sauna which can be available at home are such great recovery tools both physically and emotionally. Those can be worth it.

I hear a lot about a lot of those things. I find the cold plunge particularly fascinating. As you know, I’ve been working with the EMDR trauma specialist ever since the accident. One of the things that she told me right out of the gate to do was to plunge my face into cold water when I was feeling anxious. I know plunging your entire body does different things, but it’s the same principle that’s working behind it. It’s fascinating how that works.

Putting your face in cold water is a great way to stop the thoughts you are having that race and loop in your head. It’s something that more and more people are doing. My daughter, in her recovery, talked a lot about that as well as a tool. It’s a great inexpensive tool. You can do it at home. You can’t do it at work if you’ve got makeup on. You can do it at home and it’s a great tool.

There’s one makeup the Peloton instructors use if they sweat.

I don’t know how they look so good the whole way through.

That’s because it’s their job. Thank you so much for all that insight. Until next time, where can people find you?

You can find me on social media, especially Instagram @DrJennMann.

Thank you.

‐‐‐

I’ve been waiting all day to make this joke. Irene Kaymer is leaving Peloton again. Come on, Irene. What are you doing?

I have no idea where you’re going with that. I am pleasantly surprised. You never know. It could be cheesy. That was on the cheesier side. Ireen is leaving. Just a little recap on the history of Irene. She joined Peloton quite a while back and then left in 2021, then she came back in 2024. She’s been here right at a year and now she’s leaving again.

Any insight as to why?

She’s citing family. She wanted to spend more time with her family. There have been thoughts that maybe she wants to have more children because she did leave the last time to get married, have a kid, then she came back. Maybe there are more children on the way and that’s important to her.

I don’t know. Anybody watching on YouTube can see the faces I’m making. Let’s put it out there. People are on these schedules now where they’re off for 12 weeks at a time.

She was off a year and a half for her first one. We have to respect the fact that we don’t know her family culture.

We don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.

It also could be contract-related. It could be that she came back and it wasn’t what she thought it was going to be. You also can’t deny or negate any of that.

It’s just hard not to throw aside that you leave, come back, and then turn on leave again real quick. I’ll say it because nobody messages me about this stuff.

I don’t feel like that has to be a negative about her. It concerns me more about what it says about Peloton’s working culture.

Either interpretation at this point is fair, but what is happening here?

When you are running, your brain will tell you when to slow down. Share on X

It’s a question mark. I don’t know and we’ll never know because of NDAs and all the stuff that they do. I’m sure she’ll have the non-compete. They’re watching those these days. She has at least a year before she’ll be showing up anywhere else, and then a year from now when we’ve all forgotten.

That’s what they’re hoping for.

We’ll circle back around, and we’ll take a look at where she is now.

I will say with the non-competes if that’s the same in Europe.

I don’t either.

Who knows? We shall see what comes up.

I want to say that I wish her the best. I don’t want people to think that we’re angry at her. We skipped the part where we wish her well.

The whole situation is weird. That’s all. Alex Kowalski is now a tread instructor. You have to ask yourself, “What is going on here? Why can’t this guy stay in the rowing space? What’s the deal?”

He is such an amazing runner though. It’s not shocking that he’s adding tread to his itinerary of things to do. He had his premiere run on Monday. I was not able to take it, but I heard it was good. He had several of the instructors in the studio. His mom and dad were in the studio to support him. I thought that was sweet. He has this way of telling stories on the row about his family and they’re fun and they’re chill and slightly nerdy. I say that in the best way. I mean that in a good way. He did the same thing during this class. He was doing everything that he normally does. I was told he did seem a little nervous though, which is understandable for new on all the things, but it sounds like he did a great job. I’m excited that he’s going to be teaching in the space.

We’ve talked about the fact that we will now have kettlebell classes. Now we know who the kettlebell instructors will be.

I had to pause for a second to say that I’d seen it posted that article and it was gone five minutes later. I’m pretty sure they got their hand slapped. I think they posted it at a PM time and they were supposed to the next day. There was a time zone issue. Whoopsie doodle, they got ahead of Peloton.

It’s nice to see a big outlet like that screwing something up.

They still got an exclusive, so Peloton wasn’t that mad about it. We know we’ve got the kettlebells. They were added to the official app, not just the Strength+. There will be Strength+ programs that feature kettlebells though, so we’re going to have both. In the meantime though, we know for sure that the following are going to be instructors, Jess Sims, Andy Speer, Rebecca Kennedy, Assal, Katie, Logan, and Jermaine.

There’s also going to be a guest instructor Drake Maye. Thankfully, we have some people on our team who can tell us what that means. He is a former pro football player who turned certified personal trainer. He has this no-nonsense coaching style. That’s going to be a good thing. People will get pushed to their limits.

That will not work for me. I need lots of nonsense.

You do. People are excited about it. We have a great article where we introduce the new lineup of instructors for kettlebells. We also give you very specific tips on how you can take your existing weights and turn them into kettlebells. We wrote a whole different article about all of the things that you need to do with your form to make sure you don’t get hurt doing kettlebell classes. We have both of those over at TheClipOut.com from our amazing writing team.

We will touch on that a little bit more in our Patreon episode.

Oprah was spotted on her Instagram wearing Peloton leggings.

She’s been at Peloton. We knew she was a Peloton person. What we thought funny about it is that it spurred an entire people talking all about it just because she wore the leggings on Instagram.

The Clip Out | Angela Mielke | Full-Time Job

What’s funny is according to the headline, they’re the $30 leggings. They are not even the super high-end $140 pair of leggings. Now I’m like, “Are we doing okay? I know times are tight.”

I think she’s doing okay.

Now, you know Oprah puts her leggings on the same way you do.

One leg at a time?

No, with Peloton logos on them. Coming back after this, we’re going to cover some content. We’re going to give you the TCO Top 5 and point out all the classes that you should be thinking about. Stick around.

‐‐‐

It is time to check out the TCO Top 5, where you tell us your favorite classes and then we agree. We will start with number one, your favorite artist series ride.

This was taught by Cliff Dwenger. It is a 30-minute Kirk Franklin, which you were telling me about in the last episode that we had. He was a gospel singer. It was his production that we watched when we went to the Gospel Brunch.

The Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues in Disney Springs.

This ride was nominated. It was taught on February 20th and Elizabeth Schlossberg nominated it. She said, “I was not planning on going to zone 7 this morning, but that’s what happens with Cliff’s gospel rides. I didn’t know Kirk Franklin, but his music is amazing. Coral musical theater, hip hop vibes with strong beats to catch, and a message that is for everyone, no matter what their beliefs are.” That’s pretty cool.

Number two, your favorite yoga class.

This yoga class was taught by Aditi Shah. It was from February 13th. It was a 20-minute Valentine’s Day yoga flow. This was recommended by Tina because she wrote this this week. She said that her Valentine’s Day was very unusual this year. She didn’t have the opportunity to properly celebrate. She was sort of cranky about the idea of taking this class, but she likes to add a yoga class at the end of her strength workouts. Honestly, Aditi’s Valentine’s Day attire drew her to the class. Thank you, Brittany Allen. “It turns out this class lifted my spirit, stretched me out, and left me feeling great. The flow was easy to follow and Aditi’s message was all about the people who love not just romantic partners, and the music was light and relaxing.“ That’s perfect. Very nice, Tina.

Number three, your favorite walk run.

This was taught by Andy Speer on June 16th, 2024. It’s a 30-minute walk plus run. Elizabeth Schlossberg also nominated this class. She found this class and she said it was amazing. It’s from Andy Speers, where he did a musical dip through his 20s searching for love on the beach and in the clubs, but he was grateful, he found true love with Rebecca who was always found on the dance floor showing up her moves. Elizabeth described this class as Club Bangers but funny.

Number four, favorite strength class.

You can’t have an Andy class without a Rebecca class. The favorite strength class this week was a 30-minute full-body strength class taught on January 26th. Katie Bromley recommended this class. She said the music was great and the instruction was spot on. There were only four different moves in the main set but prepare to lift heavy.

Finally, number five. I don’t know if I’d go as far as to say it’s notoriously hard, but it is unstackable.

David Stenberg nominated this ride and we went back in the archives. We went back to January 21st, 2020, before the pandemic when we were so naive and had no idea what was coming for us. He said he’s a believer now. Jess King killed Mr. Big, the Mr. Big commercial. “It all makes sense now. I rarely encounter something new that brings me back to the first time I rode a Peloton, sweat, endorphins, music, and enjoy. This class has got it. It’s a killer. The set list is awesome and I have no idea how I look past Jess King for so many years. I don’t expect to walk for the rest of the day. Also, I might not operate any heavy machinery either. Apologies to my wife, I don’t have the energy to empty the dishwasher. Unstackable.”

We will now take a look at what’s coming up this week at Peloton, or maybe what happened this week at Peloton. It’s normally a little bit of both.

That’s true.

We have Peloton workouts in different languages.

This is great because they’re trying to get people to get out of their comfort zones. If you’re a fan of classes in other languages, maybe this isn’t for you. For people who maybe haven’t tried that, Charlotte recently taught an English class. That was good because there were a lot of people who got to take her classes for the first time. Trying some of these classes would be a good idea for you. There’s going to be restorative yoga. That’s going to be happening in Spanish with Mariana. There’s going to be a restorative class with Chelsea. There’s also going to be German carnival rides. At least one of those is going to be Taught by Assal. There’s also going to be a yoga with Nico in German, and then there’s going to be another ride that’s going to be in German with Erik. Lots of different rides are coming.

We also have a 30-minute new track ride with Tunede.

New music is going to be hitting. There are also new scenic classes in New Zealand on the bike tread and row. Those are going to be dropping on February 26th. Those are the German Carnival-themed classes that I mentioned. There’s also going to be restorative yoga in Spanish and English. All kinds of good stuff.

Now we’ll take a look at what’s on The Clip Out’s radar that we think should also be on yours.

We’ve already talked about Alex joining the tread. The next thing we want to make sure of is not to forget this is the final week of Black History Month. There are going to be more classes from Peloton that are added to the collection. There’s going to be an epic Black History Month live class from Alex Toussaint. It’s going to be a platinum producers’ ride and Monday night hip-hop time slot. That was on February 24th.

There’s going to be a live ride from Cliff this week, and a hip-hop upper body with Jess Sims. There’s also going to be some encore classes that are hitting that are going to be covering Black History Month, and there’s going to be of course the Artist Series this week that is the Grammy-nominated UK star, Raye. Her classes are going to be on February 27th. There’s going to be a walk-run with Jeffrey. That’s going to be a premier. There’s also going to be a lower-body strength class with Katie that’s live and a live run with Olivia.

On Friday, there are going to be two classes in German. One with Mila and one with Hannah Frankson. That’s going to be fine. Robin is back this week with another installment of her benchmark ride. The one that’s called your day one series. It’s like an FTP test. You can use it as a benchmark. You can come back to see how you did.

Another installment of that. As far as what’s coming up next, the next month is going to be Women’s History Month. There are going to be a lot of classes for that dropping. Susie is going to be prepping for her first-ever two-hour live run in London. That’s going to be taking place on March 23rd. That’s the second ever because Becs did one back on October 24th. That’s pretty cool.

Coming up after this, we got our interview of the week. We’re going to talk to Angela Mielke, so sit tight.

‐‐‐

Joining us is Angela Mielke. Angela. How’s it going?

I’m well, and you?

Good. It’s rather cold here, which I prefer to the summer, but rapidly getting old. How about you?

I’d much rather it be summer too. I’m in Southern California, so my idea of cold is probably not your idea of cold, but it’s cold here to me.

I have to ask. Southern California, is that near Los Angeles? Are you close to where all the fire is?

No.

Good, I’m glad you are not.

Thank God, no. It’s crazy what’s going on there with everything. We are getting a ton of wind where I’m at, but I’m much further east and probably about 45 minutes from the closest fire area.

I hope it doesn’t impact you. I hope it impacts as few people as possible. It’s craziness. Sorry to go off on a tangent already.

It’s a depressing one.

Getting A Peloton For Christmas

We’ll start with a happier topic, Peloton. How did you decide in your journey that Peloton was a good match for you, and when was that?

Honestly, I didn’t decide. My husband surprised me with a Peloton bike for Christmas back in 2019.

The same year as the commercial.

Yes, but I didn’t tell him I wanted one. I didn’t think it would be something he would agree to. I’m the spender, he’s the saver. Trying to convince him sometimes to spend money is somewhat hard, especially because at the time, I wasn’t working out at all. It’s very hard when you have two kids at home, you work full time, and take the time to drive to the gym, find parking, check in an hour ahead of time to be able to get a class, and then you take the class, it’s an hour, and then drive home. I don’t have that 2 to 3 hours in my day to spend doing that, especially at that time.

I didn’t think that he would think that I would ride it or use it because I wasn’t working out yet, but he did because he remembered I used to spin before kids and thought that I might like it, which I did. I was so excited the day it showed up. It showed up early on December 14, 2019. I took my very first ride with Olivia, thinking that she was sweet and innocent and looked fun. I was wrong. From there, it’s been up and down more consistently, but I love Peloton. I don’t even know what I would do if it wasn’t here with me.

Embracing A More Active Lifestyle

I certainly understand that. I’m curious you said that you used to spin. Have you been active throughout your life? I understand there’s always a period where not a lot happens when you have little ones at home, but were you generally active, or was getting active in adulthood new for you?

I was never active growing up. I played softball as a young child, but I was more happy to go get the snack that I would get at the end. I want to say probably once I was in college, some of my friends started running, so I ran. After I graduated college, I hooked up with some other girls, and we would go and meet in the morning and run.

I ran a marathon. I stopped though because I was getting married, and I didn’t want to have a runner’s toe for my wedding. I decided to take a break. After I got married, I tried again. I was trying to train for the LA Marathon and I ended up fracturing my foot. I was in a cast and boot for a while. I wasn’t able to do it, so I put running on the back burner. One of my friends, once I was better, talked me into going with her to a spin class that she taught. We would wake up in the morning, go spin before work, and go to work together. I fell in love with it. It was awesome.

It’s a good thing that you stopped running before the wedding. I can’t even imagine getting married in a boot.

I would have done that and then had to get married with a cast. That would be horrible.

That’d be awful. That’s a Canadian thing. They will get married in a boot.

I see what you did there.

Enshrining The Bike In Her House

We see your bike behind you in a shrine. It’s on a little stage, and it’s got lights around it. It’s got a Peloton backlit logo behind that. Was that the setup from day one? At what point did you decide it deserved to be celebrated in such a manner?

When I used to go to the actual spin classes, one of the things I liked about it was that they turned off all the lights. They turned on lights similar to this and played loud music. We moved the bike into my bedroom. That way, I’d be able to close the door. It’s probably a darker room in the house, so the lights work a little better. First, we put the LED lights on the mat. I left a little bit of room to be able to step off the back end.

I have a disco ball that you can’t see. I moved it so it wouldn’t blind the camera, but it’s behind the wheel over here. All these things flash and change to the beat of the music. Even my Peloton sign will, but I don’t like that one changing because I feel like the way that it hits my eyes when I ride, so I usually leave it one color. We got a soundbar, so we Bluetooth to the soundbar. That way, it can be very loud in here, and I can shut off the world and be in my own little space. It’s like my own Peloton party.

I love the way the lights shine up on the wall too. It’s very sparkly looking.

At night when it’s dark, it lights up the whole room with those dots, and then they go back and forth like that. It’s cool. I have a couple of videos on my Instagram that show it because a lot of people ask all the time. There are so many people asking where I got this or where I got that, so I have linked it all. That way, it’s a lot easier.

Are you the only one who uses the bike, or does your husband use it as well?

He uses it. He’s not as big of a fan of it as I am. He’s more of a guy who likes to go to the gym and lift heavy weights versus cardio. Cardio for him is like pulling teeth, but he does it because he knows it’s good for him. He will primarily ride for a couple of weeks, then take some time off and come back to it. He’s not as consistent with it as I am.

Getting Back To Running

What about the other classes on the platform? Are you taking running classes since you used to run? Are you like, “No, I’m staying away from that since I fractured my foot?” How does that work?

I’m back to running. I got a tread for Christmas from my husband. I have that downstairs. That’s in the process of being set up similar to this.

That was going to be my next question. Has it been decorated?

He’s super excited because now I’m all focused on getting the garage cleaned up. We got to take care of this and that and this because it’s something he’s wanted to do for a while, but now he has my attention to do it. He got me a tread so I have been running again and doing walks on that. I do stretching. I’m doing a lot of different things. The only thing I don’t think I’m a huge fan of yet is maybe yoga. I tried it. My body does not want to flow like they want me to in those classes.

It’s also like the more that we need it, the more we don’t do it. I feel like yoga is hard to do because if you’re a person who has X amount of time, and you are because you’re a parent, then it’s like I only have so much time to work out today, and I need to get as much bang for my buck as I can. Yoga is good for you, but it’s not a calorie burner in the same way that other workouts are, but it’s good. I’m saying all of that because I’m trying to convince myself I need to be better at yoga.

That’s why I’m happy that Hannah Corbin started Did You Stretch Though? Challenge. At the beginning of the year, she has that going. I have been doing that, and I’m big on challenges and sticking to them. I add that on. Plus, another girl I follow on Instagram is @m1lfsofpeloton. She does a weekly board challenge, and I do that too because it’s not that much extra time, but it makes a huge difference. It was that in combination with whatever else I was doing that day whether it be the bike, the tread, or maybe a longer strength class.

It’s smart that they spell MILF with the 1.

If not, then Peloton won’t let them use the hashtag. They had to do that in order to do that. If not, they can’t use it.

I was thinking it was to stop the creepers searching for MILFs.

I knew that’s where you were going.

It prevents that from finding it, so the people who enjoy it in a fun way can see where it’s at. For the people who want to lurk, it’ll never come up, until we said it on the show.

I will put it this way. Our audience is 80% women.

It’s very simple to fix that. It’s a simple block on both platforms. If someone comes around like that, automatic block.

Now you can do that. It’s nice that you finally can do that because I had asked for that for a long time with Peloton. It was very exciting when they finally put that into place.

I’m happy that they did too.

Differences Between Live Vs. On Demand

What do you think is your favorite type of class to take then? What’s your go-to?

Anything Cody. Cody is my boy. I will take every single one of his classes. It doesn’t matter what he’s teaching. I’m so happy that he’s back because I always prefer to go on a live versus on demand. I don’t know what it is for me, but I feel like my output is better. It’s that or EDM. That would probably be my next choice. Maybe something with Jess King.

I see this come up a lot in conversations around Peloton. Do you feel like live versus on-demand is more engaging for you, and that’s why you push harder?

The idea of being in real-time with the instructor, with all your friends on the leaderboard because usually, on live rides, I will filter the leaderboard based on people I follow. It’s us exchanging high fives, and sometimes we even chat during these live rides on Instagram chats. Little comments here and there, but it makes it fun. It makes it feel like you are there with your friends.

It’s a shared experience.

The Clip Out | Angela Mielke | Full-Time Job

Yes. Everyone talks about the ride, the parts they liked about it, or the parts that were hard after. It makes it fun because your friends are there and you are there. It’s a good time.

It makes sense to me.

Working In An Insurance Company

Do you have a job, or are you a stay-at-home mom?

I wish. No. I do work. I work Monday through Friday, 6:00 to 2:30. I am blessed that my schedule is pretty flexible. I can pop on and off. It depends on following California state laws for breaks. I work for an insurance company. I write estimates from home to determine whether or not cars are a total loss.

I feel like the housing insurance industry is a scary place right now, especially in California.

It’s insane how much the rate has gone up. It’s a little crazy. I can imagine it’s probably worse now.

You are about to get an influx of work.

It’s because all the cars were damaged.

I handle them across the state, so it’s not just from California. When we had the hurricanes, I was getting flooded vehicles from Florida and Carolina. I handle across the whole state since it’s virtual.

Story Behind Angela’s Leaderboard Name

It does make sense. What is your leaderboard name?

Spin_Slay_A, but that’s not how it originally started. Originally, it was iAngM215. That was it. It was something fast that we threw together while the tech was still here setting up the bike for me to get on and ride. Finally, at some point, I said, “I need to change it to something fun.” I see all these fun names on the leaderboard, but I couldn’t think of anything. My husband was like, “How about Spin Slayer, but spell it this way,” so Spin_Slay_A. When we went to the Peloton live event in Los Angeles, they had us write our name down, and I handed it to Katie Wang, and she said, “Spin_Slay_A.” From there, it stuck. It works. It’s Spin_Slay_A and I’m Angela, so it works.

Works on more than one level. I got it.

Originally, the current one was supposed to be Spin Slayer, but it’s Spin_Slay_A. Either way.

Angela’s Preferred Instructor

You said that you are a big Cody fan. What about on the tread? Have you had your tread long enough to have a preferred instructor?

I don’t know that I have a preference as of yet. I took a Robin run that was awesome. It was live. I shouldn’t say it was a run. It was classified as a walk, but it was a walk and run. It surprised me because it was not a walk. It was interval running, but it was good and I liked it. She was very encouraging during that and pushed me to run faster. It was a Carly Rae Jepsen run. One of the German instructors I’m drawing a blank on his name right now.

There’s Erik, Benny, and Jeffrey.

It was Jeffrey. That one was super fun. Interesting to take it using subtitles. It was still very engaging because I was able to focus right on the subtitle area and read it, follow the directions while enjoying the music and running.

Did you feel like Robin was a little bit of a different style instructor on the tread versus on the bike?

I do think so. On the bike, she does a lot more of her chitchat, whereas on the tread, it’s very focused. Maybe that’s why I like her on the tread because it’s very focus-driven, and it helps me to maintain focus and not let my mind wander. That’s the biggest thing for me. When I’m running, I know I can do it. I’m not physically struggling to do it. It’s my brain telling me, “You should walk now. You want to turn it down.” but I can keep going. Mind over matter.

I recommend that you at some point take a class with Becs. I want to preface this by saying that she gives out very fast callouts. Ignore those if they don’t suit you, but she tells amazing stories on the tread, and I forget I’m running. Susie Chan is the same way. She tells great stories. Mariana Fernandez. If you are looking for someone who’s a good fit for you, I recommend trying those ladies.

The Clip Out | Angela Mielke | Full-Time Job

I wanted to try a Becs class. I haven’t had a chance to do hers on demand yet, but she’s the one who did that crazy marathon running, and I thought that was amazing. I need to take a class with her.

She’s a badass. There’s no doubt about it. They all are. We have a great amount of talent at Peloton. I say “we” like I have some ownership in that, but we are a community.

We have stock, so we do have some ownership in it.

Pretty much worthless, but that’s okay.

Advice To Peloton Newbies

Do you have any advice for people just now entering the world of Peloton?

My favorite thing to tell people is to sort it by the music because if you like the music, you are going to like the ride. You don’t have to do what they are saying to do. You can stay in the saddle the whole time. You can change your resistance as you are able. You don’t have to push it like they are saying. Try to enjoy it at first, and then from there, build.

My dad got a Peloton, and he started to ride. That was my first thing to him, and he found a couple of classes that he liked. He then decided to repeat those classes a few times until he started to feel more comfortable with it, listening for the callouts, and trying to stay in the range. From there, he expanded based on the rides and instructors he wanted to try out.

That’s a great idea. I like how he repeated them until he was comfortable. That’s a great piece of advice for new people.

Closing Words And Episode Wrap-up
