Peloton Reveals New International Pricing Plus Our Interview With Jennifer Hilger!
I put on a hoodie because normally, it’s chilly down in the basement. Now I’m regretting it. I feel a little toasty.
You can take it off.
I don’t know that me taking off articles of clothing is in the best interest of the show. The YouTube views will plummet.
That’s not true. If you have a hoodie with a zip, you could unzip it.
I like that you’re trying to undress me though. That’s nice ten years into our marriage. What pray tell do you have in store for people?
We have our interview with Jennifer Hilger. She is a Peloton community member. She’s a working mom, a wife, and very highly motivated with Peloton. She used the app for six months before she ordered a bike. She had never participated in a group cycling class. She ordered the spin bike without her ever having it spun.
That should only be true about Looms.
We also have updates from Peloton’s new international pricing. We’re going to cover the All For One lineup. We’re also going to talk about the All For One package that Hyatt is offering, not to mention some little technical glitches that have been happening. We have a big community celebration. We’re going to talk about the Lululemon one, but there’s also a Peloton community event that had nothing to do with Peloton through the community. We have our Instructors In The News. We have some big things to chat about. We have Past Guest Updates, birthdays, etc.
Before we get to all that, shameless plugs. Don’t forget, you can find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart, and TuneIn. Wherever you get your podcast, make sure you follow us so you never miss an episode. That’s important. You can also find us on Facebook at Facebook.com/TheClipOut. While you’re there, like the page and join the group. What else? Our Patreon, Patreon.com/TheClipOut, where for $5 a month, you get bonus content. We record an extra 20 to 25 minutes of content a week about stuff that can’t fit in the show because it would be two hours long. We’re trying not to do that to people.
We are trying to make it quicker.
We take that stuff and we put it over in the Patreon. For $5 a month, you get that. You also get ad-free episodes. If we get them early, you get them early. Most importantly, we like you a little extra.
Some fun stories are coming up this week too.
We talked about which instructor was battling an exit rumor that Peloton needed Crystal’s help to strike it down. They were like, “Please help us.”
That’s not the way it works, but that’s okay.
We’ll share that story with you over on Patreon. You can also watch all of these over on YouTube at YouTube.com/TheClipOut. We also have our newsletter which I didn’t send out last week because all the things weren’t ready, and then I forgot.
The YouTube never went up last week. If you’ve been looking for it, I’m so sorry. I don’t know what happened, but it never went up. We keep being told it will eventually. You probably won’t care about it by the time it does, so we invite you over to all the other locations to listen.
You can stare at the pictures of us and move them back and forth like South Park animation. There’s all that. Let’s dig in. Shall we?
We shall.
‐‐‐
Peloton has released new international prices. All the pricing now has an accent. That’s what I imagine.
The pricing in those countries was already in whatever denomination it was locally sold. That did not change but the amount of denomination you will be paying has increased. It’s across the board. For the bike in the UK, it went from $1,345 to $1,599. In Australia, it went from $2,145 to $2,699, In Germany and Austria, it went from $1,445 to $1,899. These are not small. Very similar increases with the Bike+ and the Peloton Row. The interesting thing is that the row still is not available in the UK.
When the row was first released, we were told it was coming soon. That was imminent, but I guess because of financial issues, that never happened. It’s probably not completely axed, but I don’t know when. In the UK, interestingly, you can rent the Bike+ for £125 a month and a £200 one-time joining fee. Isn’t that interesting? I guess they don’t like the subscriptions over there. I don’t know.
If I had to pay $200 to do it, that would stop me from liking it.
I assumed maybe incorrectly that you didn’t need to pay a monthly fee for the Peloton app. I might be reading way more into that than what was indicated. That was my assumption.
There’s no Black Friday over there.
I don’t think they have big sales though. It’s still before Christmas.
Probably. They don’t do Thanksgiving over there. That’s an American thing.
Canada does things giving but they do it differently.
They do their own Thanksgiving. They’re thankful for other things like not having to have a copay when they go to the doctor. They are thankful for it.
That’s something worth being thankful for.
When we were in England though, it was around Christmas time and they were pushing sales. I think they started at the beginning of December.
No. I don’t know, but they were talking about the sales because we even were like, “Did they have Black Friday here?” We even had this conversation while we were there. I left with the assumption that their sales mirrored the timing of our sales even though they don’t officially call it Black Friday. Who the hell knows how it got there, but that was how I left that conversation.
We need the listeners to educate us.
I don’t know. I think we had this conversation in our hotel room.
I’m saying we need the British listeners to educate us so we know.
I got you. I thought you meant to go back and listen. I was like, “We didn’t talk about it on the episode.
When we don’t know what we’re talking about, we need someone else. The All For One lineup, or as the cool kids say AFO lineup, has been announced.
It is quite a bit smaller than it has been in past years.
Most for one.
All For One was a very different thing. All For One meant something completely different. Now it is a music festival, but that’s not what it was originally. There are very mixed reactions to this lineup. I am happy about it because it’s a good variety of older stuff and newer stuff that I recognized. For example, the Black Eyed Peas. I enjoy Black Eyed Peas. I do not think that they are something that the kids are currently listening to, but Billie Eilish is. I also like Billie Eilish. From that vantage point, there is a little bit of diversity. However, there’s nothing on here from the rock, like the rock genre. No rock horns.
No rock horns because you can’t hold onto your bike while you throw on rock horns.
Stevie Nicks is the closest it gets.
I like Stevie Nicks but that’s not a rock horn type of band.
Not really. I honestly like a lot of these bands but it doesn’t hit a wide variety of people in
Stevie Nicks must be doing a push or something because she’s going to be on SNL.
It must be something happening.
There is also an AFO challenge associated with AFO. The challenge is to find a band you like.
It’s the same time that AFO is up for obvious reasons. From September 26 to October 5th, you can earn a badge as you listen to these different bands or singers. You can join the challenge on the bike, the tread, the row, or the app. You’re able to join from any of those. It’s always neat to get the badges for going to the classes. I enjoy that. I like getting the badges.
Have you ever scrolled through the badges, like layer old badges?
No.
Why do you care if you get them?
To be quite frank, it used to be a much bigger deal when there were less. The more that you add in, the more impossible it is to get them all. The fun of it was collecting them all.
You can’t get them all.
I’ve accepted that and once I accepted that, I didn’t take them all.
We should have Peloton go run around your neighborhood.
That’s going to end in somebody getting arrested for trying to attack an instructor.
“I found a Cody Rigsby.”
This is why we have security now. We didn’t use to, but that’ll be a fun little add-on.
There is also a VIP AFO package that you can get via Hyatt.
There is a range of packages. The prices range from $200 to $1,500 for these packages, but there’s there’s a wide variety of what you get. For some of them, they are VIP classes. They’re meet and greet, and then there are some that you also get a two-night stay. If you’re staying in New York, you get the Two Nights at Park Hyatt. There are also London experiences. There’s going to be meet and greets for Susie Chan and Bradley Rose. There’s also a VIP class and a tour for you and a friend.
There’s also a post-class photo opportunity and a 30-minute meeting greet for each of those. They don’t appear to have the two-night stay option in London, but they do in the New York packages. It’s interesting that the VIP classes are listed separately. You can take classes with Cody or Olivia, then you can have a meet and greet with Adrian Williams if you sign on to Cody’s package. You can have a meet and greet with Camila if you sign up for Olivia’s package.
That’s very confusing.
I guess it’s a way to include more instructors.
That’s an odd way to configure those.
I would agree. Anyway, if you want to get involved in that and you certainly can, you go to Hyatt Experiences. We have the link in our post and you can sign up for it if they’re still around.
I think those are good ideas. If I’m coming in from out of town, that’s a way to not have to worry about what if I don’t get a class for my trip. I’ll book my room at the Hyatt and I know I get a class.
This is only for AFO though. That’s the one weekend. They also only gave people a two-week heads-up. There’s not a lot of time. We’re down to I hope you live in the tri-state area or you have lots of vacation time or you don’t work.
Also lots of miles. The Teams feature was having issues this week.
It’s not working correctly. That’s the team I’d be on. On the app specifically, they’ve been seeing that it’s not working and it crashes a lot. They’ve been putting out new releases for that.
If you’ve been having issues, it’s not you. It’s them.
That’s right.
Bike classes got a new camera angle.
They’re trying it out. We don’t know that they’re going to stick with it. Maybe it was part of the studio maintenance they recently did. Anyway, there are mixed opinions about this.
There has been a change and some people don’t like change.
That’s fair. I’m not sure I like it either because more people are visible in the class, but it’s from the back. If you are not expecting to be on camera from the back while you’re out of the saddle, that might be a little jarring.
They called this the Mix-A-Lot cam.
You feel far from the instructor in this view as well. I don’t know if this is truly experimentation or if it’s here to stay. I’m not sure how I feel about it, but lots of people are not sure. Actually, they are sure and they don’t like it.
Do they show a whole bunch of the class from this angle or do they occasionally cut to that?
I think they occasionally cut to it.
Looking at this on my computer because we all know I would never see it on a bike, I feel like this is a way that if you’re in a class, you still get a little bit of screen time.
That’s what I assume that they’re trying to do too. If you weren’t expecting it, I don’t know that would feel great if you were wearing something that you felt good and comfortable from behind. Most people who go to the studio have already thought about their viewing how to be seen on camera.
You got to go in with the assumption that you might be on camera.
This is me. I’m not speaking for anybody else, but if I was wearing only a sports bra and a pair of shorts and I didn’t know that that camera was on me and I was out of the saddle, I would not feel my most confident. That’s all I am saying.
I agree to disagree. That’s all I’m saying. We had a recap of the Lulu Members’ Weekend over at the website.
Super Trish was there, that’s her leaderboard name. She is one of our tipsters. She was there and she had a blast like she did last time. This is the second one she has attended. There have only been two. There were all kinds of little surprises for people, especially if you had never been because they had swag bags at every opportunity. You got a water bottle that was branded Lululemon for every class you went to. That was the same last time, but this time, they had a hot pink one.
Over at The Clip Out, we were trying to get Trish to give us that hot pink water bottle, but she only got one so we couldn’t have it. The rest were white and they were pretty, but the pink one was amazing. They had nice bags. For the 5K, they had a different Lululemon bag. They had at the events in the studio. There were all these different kinds of handbags that you could get.
Callie was there and that was her first weekend back. She’s been on maternity leave, so she got to teach her first classes. She also came in at the event and did the announcements and everything. There was no meet and greet with her for that portion like it was the party and that was not what she was there for. She came into the intros, but there was a separate opportunity for people to see her. Erik Jäger was there. Matty Maggiacomo was there.
Alex Toussaint and Katie Wang were there. She was very excited that she was teaching strengths. She was telling Trish how excited she was about that. There was also a DJ at the party that was spinning tunes. That was all fun. A few things that we thought were interesting are that there were fewer people overall at this event. I don’t know if that was purposeful like Peloton kept it at a lower level, but Trish said that the class, the 5K, the meet and greet, all of it was fewer people.
I thought that was interesting and each attendee got that swag bag. There was a Lululemon gift card. There was the insulated bottle and then prices were also randomly given out during classes. They would pick a number. If you were on bike 18 and they picked 18, you got an extra prize for being there. Joslyn Thompson Rule showed up and nobody was expecting that. She took part in The Sims 60 bootcamp, and it was fun to see her. She had gotten off the plane and came straight from the plane to the studio and took classes. Amazing.
That sounds fun.
It was a lot of fun. For people who were part of the event last time and were feeling some type of way about it, one of the things they were upset about was that Lululemon did not provide pictures for any of the events. They took lots of pictures but then they didn’t share them. This time, they shared those pictures.
That’s good. If you got somebody there doing it anyway, “Here’s a Dropbox link.” “That’s all I got to do?” The Black Peloton Riders Community is celebrating five years.
Gary Bushrod originally started the group back in September 2019. I know it’s obvious if you do the math that’s 2019. Because of the pandemic, I feel like it messes with your head to think that 2019 was already five years ago. That’s crazy. They have over 30,000 members in the Facebook community. That’s neat.
Good for them.
Did you know that they have cruises within the BPR group? They go on cruises. In their fourth year, they did their first one and they did have their second annual cruise.
Was that the cruise line that has Pelotons on there?
There are, but it wouldn’t be enough for everybody to take it at the same time. Multiple cruise lines have Pelotons on them.
I guess we go on the cheap ones.
They’re the expensive ones. What’s the one that Richard Branson owns though?
Virgin?
Peloton is the best equipment to have at home if you do not have enough time to join a gym. Share on XThat one has the Pelotons on it. I know that one does.
That doesn’t sound like a fun cruise. Virgin? No, thank you.
It’s a brand name.
It’s a bad brand name. It’s telling me right now. I know he’s very successful but that’s a bad brand name.
Congrats to the BPR.
The Pixel Watch 3 has a Fitbit free trial that comes with Peloton classes.
This is part of the recent partnership between Google and Peloton where you’re going to see this on all Fitbit items going forward. I think you’re going to keep seeing new add-ons and this is the newest one.
If you’re on the fence, there’s a little something for you. I guess if I have a Peleton membership, that’s the deal I get.
I think that’s for people who are still expanding their horizons. If you’re tuning in to this show, you probably already like Peloton.
It seems it would be a little weird if you don’t.
It’s a great thing for us as community members to tell people who have Pixels, “You’ve been wanting to try Peloton. Here’s a great way to do it.”
Check out some quick hits of things going on around the Peloton World. Alex Toussaint’s shoes are featured in a book about shoes.
I thought this was the weirdest thing. I thought it was weird.
I guess some people are into shoes.
I know but it’s one of those things that never even occurred to me that there would be that much excitement around. I’m sure it’s the same way people think of me when they find out that we have a podcast about Peloton. It never even occurred to me that there would be an entire coffee table book for shoes.
People line up around the block when the new sneakers come out. It’s a big deal.
I always knew that, but I didn’t know that they had a coffee table book.
I guess if you can’t get them or you want to go back in time when here’s a shoe that came out in 2011 that I can’t get anymore.
It makes sense. The possibility just had never entered my brain. It was fascinating.
Mila Lazar had a nice Instagram post.
It reminded everyone to take a deep breath and love and accept ourselves. She silently sat outside on her stoop and she used the cue card type of thing that you love actually and reminded everyone that we are strong, we are powerful, and nothing can stop us.
Joslyn Thompson Rule wrote a book.
This is not new. This book was written before she was a Peloton instructor. I don’t remember how many years that has been anymore, but I know she has been an instructor for a long time. This is not new but she was signing books and posting about it. We wanted to raise awareness that it exists. It’s called How To Move It: Reset Your Body.
Matt Wilpers had a 1-mile PR.
When he did the Fifth Avenue Mile, he did it faster than he’s ever done it, which was 4 minutes and 49 seconds to do an entire mile.
That’s insane. Do you know what would suck about being that fast?
What could suck about that?
You would never be allowed to be late for anything ever again.
Transportation is still going to be slow.
You should have caught a cab quicker. You’re probably faster than a cab in New York City. He has no excuses.
Just run everywhere, Matt. Appointment to appointment, run.
It’ll be like, “That Matt guy is super punctual but kind of stinky.”
He’s going to need a portable shower. Congrats to Matt.
Coming up after this, we’re going to talk about Instructors In The News to let you know what Rebecca Kennedy and Andy Speer are up to for wedding week.
‐‐‐
Wedding week for Rebecca Kennedy and Andy Speer is upon us.
We are officially in the actual week. They are already celebrating. Tons of people have shown up. DJ John Michael is there with Brian.
That means they didn’t have to get a DJ for the wedding.
Maybe he would just get to enjoy it.
I thought they were cheaping it out.
They’re in Italy. Based on the views that they are posting, no. They are in Italy. Nothing is cheap in Italy.
Something must be cheap. They have poor people there.
But to get there and spend money in nice places. Anyway, Denis is there, notably without his girlfriend. There have been rumors about that. We’ve covered it over on the bonus. Jess King is there. Sophia is home with the kids. Jess King is fine solo. Brittany Allen is there. I can’t help but wonder how many fashions this week will be designed and created by Brittany Allen.
Does Brittany Allen do wedding dresses?
Brittany Allen does whatever.
I can’t even imagine how glittery that wedding dress will be.
Whatever Rebecca wanted is what happened. Tunde is there. Adrian is there as well with her girlfriend. I wanted to make sure that people know that we will be covering the week as it happens. We will have a big wrap-up article that’s going to have highlights and details of everything so you will not miss it.
That’s a good time to bookmark The Clip Out website, sign up for the newsletter, or follow you on Instagram, Facebook, and all the places. Hannah Corbin was on KOIN which is in Portland.
I didn’t know where that was. Is she from there?
I have no idea.
I think she might be.
I think I’m supposed to ask you those questions. Not the other way around. That’s the premise of the show.
That’s fair.
She was on there discussing TED awareness.
Do you know what TED is?
Thyroid Eye Disease.
Very nice, Tom, and I believe she has this. That’s why she was talking about it.
Normally, people either have it or someone they love has it. They have a special cause like that. An interesting side pop culture note because that’s what I bring to the table. Jerry Lewis famously hosted the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon for like 40 or 50 years. No one to this day has any idea why.
I have always wondered about that.
He walked into their offices one day and was like, “I want to host a Telethon for you.” They were like, “You’re a big star.”To the best anyone can tell, there’s nobody in his life who is afflicted with it. He didn’t have it. They have no idea why he picked this disease to try and help. He just walked in one day and said, “I wanted to do that.”
I would like to think somebody in his life inspired him.
Nobody can point to it. Christine D’Ercole was featured in Food and Wine.
I love this because the title says, “Cycling champion Christine D’Ercole wants you to drop your baggage around negative food talk.” That’s great. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, food is always such a difficult conversation.
It certainly can be.
People get very uncomfortable sometimes, especially people who struggle. I’m one of those people.
Same here. I’m sure I say negative things to myself about food all the time.
It’s tough to drop your baggage about anything.
We had an interesting artist series announcement around Latin Hispanic Heritage Month and Selena.
It’s not weird that they had Selena classes.
For sure. It’s more how it got announced.
They announced that the booking was going to begin on a Sunday, and they announced that on Saturday That was bonkers to me.
That’s a major artist too.
It is a major artist for them to change the day like that on people. On the one hand, you would think a wide variety of people would have access to their computers on a weekend day, but If you are already programmed for Thursday at noon Eastern, and then all of a sudden, new stuff drops on a Sunday, it’s a disadvantage.
True words have never been spoken. Also, we have Sam Yo and the music of Marvel. That is a good combo.
He had a whole class that was nothing but Marvel music. It’s going to be a series. This is not just a one-off, which I’m pretty stoked about. I saw in the Reddit community, you know I’m not a big fan of Reddit, somebody was calling like, “All nerds, you need to take this class.” I was like, “ Yes, you do.” This message is approved. I agree.
I wonder what they would be playing in that class if it wasn’t for James Gunn.
That’s fair. This is going to be a series and Sam led the first class. This was Sam’s doing to make this happen, but other instructors are going to be teaching classes too. Robin is going to be doing a 20-minute arms and shoulder Music of Marvel class on September 19th. By the time you hear this, it will already be out. Alex K, Logan Aldridge, and Mila Lazar are also all going to be having classes. We don’t know exactly when those classes are coming out yet but keep your eyes out. How awesome is that?
That’s a clever artist series. It’s an interesting way to come at it.
‐‐‐
Michelle K. who you might remember was writing bunches and bunches of Peloton-related articles. Who was she working for?
She was a freelance, so she did Shape. There was a lot.
She writes for Peloton.
She writes for their blog now.
She had a baby.
Little Dahlia was born on Friday the 13th, and we wanted to send our congrats to Michelle K.
Also, Jennifer Brown, a previous guest on the show, was featured on the Today Show, sharing her fitness journey.
She lost 180 pounds if you remember. She’s now up to 189 lost. That’s the total. Some of her posts have gone viral because of the changes that she has made. She has also gone viral for barely running to running all the time, so that journey as well. She got to share both of those. It’s very exciting. Kirsten Ferguson showed up to surprise her in person. How cool is that?
Very cool.
‐‐‐
It is time for the TCO Top Five where you tell us what we should be doing, and then we tell other people. Number one, your favorite strength class.
This was taught by Rebecca Kennedy. It was a 20-minute arm and shoulder strength class. It was from May 24, 2024. She has been getting a lot of love lately for her classes. Carrie McGillivray Logan said, “I love this class for shoulders, triceps, and biceps. I will be doing it many times. The music was good also, and Rebecca struggled along with me.” That’s always nice.
Number two, your favorite walk.
This was taught by Jess King and it was on August 6, 2024, a 30-minute Pop Rock. Tara Curtis said that this walk was awesome. She had a beautiful day to walk outside while her son had lacrosse practice and the playlist was amazing. The playlist ranges from Yaz to Rod Stewart, Prince, Lady Gaga, Wilson Phillips, and more. That is quite a range.
Number three, your favorite outdoor walk run.
This was taught by Matty Maggiacomo. It was a 30-minute Chappell Roan walk plus run from August 7th. Don Rudy took this class and he said that it was a great outdoor class to walk and run with his doggy Luna, “Chappell Roan has burst onto the scene and I took this class twice. Matty’s comments are always amazing and interesting. Two thumbs up.” It’s true. Matty is very interesting.
Number four, your favorite stretch.
This one goes back a little bit. We’re in the archive back in July 2022. Hannah Corbin taught a 20-minute lower-body stretch. Also if you will notice in the little thumbnail, she is doing the splits which might be intimidating for some. Christine Weston said, “Don’t be intimidated by the thumbnail. I’m nowhere near split. You don’t have to be. This is an insanely effective hip and hamstring opener.” Katie Bromley agreed, “This is my favorite stretch. I do it 2 to 3 times a week.”
Finally, your unstackable is a Power Zone ride.
This was unanimous and well-loved by a lot of people. I don’t know that we’ve ever had one class nominated by this many people in one week. This was taught by Christine and it was a 60-minute Power Zone ride on Sunday, 9/15. Carrie McGillivray Logan is back and she says, “This was probably the hardest ride I have ever done. I simply could not do it as called out. It was a points race in a scratch race all in one. I held on riding for 60 minutes, which I called a success.” Jamie Brooks agreed, pointing out that Christine said on her live that this was the hardest ride she has ever taught. “My friend was in studio and his photo with her looks like he just got out of a pool.” If you’re looking for a tough class, that is for you.
Let’s take a look at what else we got going on this week at Peloton. We have a Peloton Defected Live DJ ride.
You do not have to join the entirety of Peloton courses to know which one is the best for you. Share on XHannah Frankson from London is going to be teaching this class. It’s 30 minutes and it’s going to be on September 20th at 2:30 PM Eastern.
We also have a Power Zone FTP with Tunde.
It’s a test that is interesting because I don’t think there has ever been an FTP test with Tunde.
I thought that sounded unusual.
She’s been teaching Power Zone for a while, but there’s not a ton that comes from Tunde, but it’s nice to mix it up. This is the first test. The first test that she will be doing. There is a 10-minute warm-up that they recommend you do, and then follow that up with the 20-minute Power Zone FTP test. That is going to be dropping on the 18th at noon. Check it out.
We also have Just Tabata with Logan.
That is going to be on Sunday mornings. That’s a sick new Signature Series and the next class is going to be on September 22nd at 10:00 AM Eastern.
Finally, we have an Oktoberfest party. There will be beer on your bike.
No. Although it has happened before back in the old days. There’s going to be a 30-minute Oktoberfest ride with Erik on Friday, then there’s going to be an encore on Sunday. If you want to get a full-body workout, you can join Assal. That’s going to be a 20-minute full-body strength on Sunday as well.
We mentioned earlier that it’s Latin and Hispanic Heritage Month because of the Selena class, but it’s not just a Selena class. There are all sorts of stuff.
There’s going to be a Total Ritmo ride. There’s going to be Fiesta Latina runs, Music Electronica, and there’s also going to be a mixture of Total Ritmo row, and then an Electronica walk and run, and the Music Electronica row. Also, Rad Lopez’s brand new strength split program, first time ever in Spanish, is dropping. That’s exciting.
We also have a Discover Yoga Program.
This is an interesting one because the classes cover nine different weeks, but they must have filmed it a long time ago because Ross Rayburn and Kristin McGee both have classes.
Didn’t he mention that he had some class in the can that we’d still be seeing from him?
He did, but Kristin did not mention that. Neither of them closed the door to future opportunities. I know that it looks like they came back and did it, but if you look at everything even from the way that the studio looks, it seems like it was probably an older one. Six months or so is how long some of those take it out. It’s pretty cool though.
‐‐‐
Peloton Apparel also dropped a Marathon Collection for people.
Honestly, I thought I was going to be purchasing something. I have not purchased anything in a very long time and I headed right over there. They don’t have pockets. That is a no-go. I’m going to be out there for 7 to 8 hours, plus sitting for God knows how long before I even get to start running. I’m going to need pockets. That was a no-go for me. They are pretty though.
If you don’t need a pocket, you can head on over there and get yourself some Marathon stuff.
Did you see those short shorts?
They were very short.
Three-inch brief-line shorts for men. It is 1970 all over again. Remember when the gym shorts were super short for boys.
I do. I was alive in the ‘70s.
It’s back.
There are pictures of me as a child wearing those things which I think are now illegal. You’ll end up on a list if you started sharing those things.
This particular collection was tested and approved by Becs Gentry and Matt Wilpers.
‐‐‐
Finally, we have one birthday. It’s Robin Arzon on September 20th. If you see her in the break room, there’s cake.
Happy birthday to Robin.
Coming up after this, we have our interview with Jennifer Hilger, so stick around.

Joining us is Jennifer Hilger. Jennifer, how is it going?
Discovering Peloton
We’re excited to have you here. I always like to start these conversations by understanding how Peloton came into your life and how you decided this is a good thing for you.
I started running in 2010. I started a Couch to 5K running program. I completed a 5K, a 10K, and a half marathon. I did all the things, the natural progression up to running 30 miles on my 30th birthday, then I had a child.
They’re the worst. Why do we do that?
It’s like I gave myself grace, but I was a little bit introverted. I would get out and be active but I wasn’t where I was before. We then had the pandemic. I heard about this Peloton app, and there was a 90-day trial. I thought, “It’s free for 90 days. I might as well try it.” I listened to a couple of runs and I said, “This is cool. I don’t have to make my playlist. I like what they’re saying to me.” It took off from there.
It was a nice way. Some of my best friends live in New York and Michigan. We could be on a live run together. We all only had to have the app and felt like we were together at a time when it was harder to be together. I decided to order the bike and my husband said, “You’ve never even taken a cycling class.” I said, “I know but people I like, they like it. I’m sure I’ll like it.”
Sure enough, I did. At first, I spent so much time on the bike. I love it and I found a way of training for me in a time of a lot of uncertainties. I work in education and that was a lot. Coming back in the pandemic, all the feelings and all the procedures and things. It gave me a constant. I always say I suffer from decision fatigue. Having someone tell me what to do, I’m here for it.
It took off from there. I always said I never needed a treadmill but then I got so into Peloton and I loved it so much. I said, “Now I need the treadmill.” I love it. I didn’t know that I needed it and then now I can’t imagine training without it. Also, with my schedule, I never felt like I could join a gym to get full use of it like it wasn’t convenient for showering or all the things. This was a perfect way for me to have what I needed but at home.
Are you scoping out space for a rower now?
I said, “I don’t need it,” and then they announced that Matt Wilpers and Adrian Williams were going to be instructors. My husband said, “Does that mean we’re getting it” I said, “Not yet. We do have room for it but it is where I do my strength and mat work.” We haven’t done it yet but it’s always in the back of our mind if I should try it or not.
With Wilpers being a coach, it’s still mat work.
That’s true.
One of our listeners who became a very dear friend of mine did her strength right in the middle of her room between her tread and her bike. What she does is lift her rower up in between so she can still do the strength.
If your ceilings are high enough.
I’m trying to help you. I am enabling you to get a rower if that’s what you want to do.
The room in here is plenty high enough for that.
When it comes to Peloton, I can vouch that she is quite the enabler.
Runner
I am a good enabler. I’m curious since you were already a runner and you started the Peloton journey as a runner, did you feel like having access to the app changed the number of times that you ran or do you think that it stayed the same once you started doing that?
It helped me with it’s okay if I go out for a twenty-minute run instead of feeling like, “If it’s not 3 miles, it’s not worth my time.” I would talk myself out of working out if I didn’t have a consistent schedule already set up. It has helped me maintain some consistency because I can take a twenty-minute class and I feel good about that. Whereas before, I thought I needed to run a lot more.
How do you balance the bike with the tread? How do you balance those two different kinds of workouts? Based on our conversation before we started recording, it seems like you’re still primarily a runner. How do you make that work?
I’m a data nerd, so I keep a spreadsheet of all my miles. You can see that I finish a running training cycle. Here goes my cycling miles and they go down. I still ride my bike during training and running. When I came back after having my son, I didn’t run very much. Maybe 3 or 4 times, but I was riding my bike a lot. I ran almost a PR in a half marathon. I said, “I know the bike is doing me a lot of good even if it doesn’t always feel the same as running.”
I’m seeing the impact it has by being lower impact on my body, but I’m still maintaining where I can go out and run at a quicker pace. It depends on what’s happening. I don’t want to become bored. If I feel like I don’t want to run, I’m going to ride. I am usually like, “I’ll ride my bike,” and I’ll try to pick a class or something that will be close to the workout I had planned running. I try to use it as a tool. As I said, it goes up when I’m not running a lot and then it goes into compliment.
Tell me again what your races are that you have coming up on your schedule.
I have a local half marathon to Oklahoma City. It’s the Red Coyote half marathon. It’ll be in November and as I was saying, I did maintain a good PR time for runs in races. I love those races. I need to make sure I get that. I have another full marathon in March in Los Angeles. I’m excited to finally do the Los Angeles Marathon.
I’ve heard good things about that one. That’s a good one too. I think all the larger cities have fun marathons and good support. I always hear good things about them. I don’t feel a Saint Louis one is super exciting though. Maybe I’m over Saint Louis.
I think it’s the muggings that throw those people off.
You can run a little faster.
I had that on my list but it’s always close to Oklahoma City. Is it Go races?
It’s the Go Saint Louis Marathon.
It’s always around Oklahoma City and I have a special connection with the local city memorial marathon, so I always participate in some way.
Oklahoma
Is your special connection to Oklahoma because you live there or that was your first one? Is there more to the connection to that?
Yes, I do live here and I lived here when the bombing happened in 1995, but it was my first half marathon and my first full marathon. I didn’t know that that existed until then, so it’s special.
My son is going to college in Oklahoma City.
Which school?
Oklahoma City University. We dropped him off weeks ago.
That’s where I went from my undergrad. I love it.
That’s good to hear. You’re gainfully employed, so that’s apparent. You’re doing well enough to buy two pieces of Peloton and have a residence in which to keep them. You do not have them in a shopping cart trotting around Oklahoma City.
All the signs point to it is going to be okay.
It’s much cooler down there now.
We stayed in Bricktown.
That was neat. That was neat that little town.
It sounds like it should be a ‘90s detective series starring Robert Urich that falls on ABC. Rober Urich stars in Bricktown.
It was a cute little part down for real. We enjoyed it and he seems to be enjoying it. Although, as far as the being employed part, she didn’t do theater. We’ll see.
He’s trying to be an actor.
I was a music education major and I played in a lot of the productions. They have a very good rate for dance, theater, musical theater, and opera. They produce them.
Fingers crossed.
If not, we’re going to hold you completely responsible.
We will send the student loan bills to you now.
I’m still in education.
Studio
That’s fair. You got to go to the studio. Tell us about that.
I turned 40 a few weeks ago and my friends who I mentioned earlier lives in Michigan and one on Long Island. We were like, “We should do something to celebrate for my 40th.” I usually start school around the time of my birthday, so it couldn’t be on my birthday. We were like, “Let’s plan a trip to New York City,” and then Justin Timberlake announced his tour. We’re like, “We’re going to put it around that.” We did that. I did all the things of trying to get registered for a class. I was waitlisted but I was able to get off the waitlist. It was for my 40th birthday even though it was a little bit early.
That sounds like a great way to celebrate your birthday.
I’ve never seen Justin Timberlake but I feel like it would be a good show.
It’s very good. I saw him in Tulsa and then in New York City then I’m going to go again in Oklahoma City. Even if you don’t love him as much as I do, it’s a good show.
He has some songs I like but I’m not like yay.
I would only know the popular stuff. I don’t hate him, but I’m not like, “I know every Justin Timberlake.” If you were to say Pink, I know every single song and every single lyric.
We like the old stuff. If you said Billy Joel, I’m set.
We have all of the bases covered here.
We saw him in Tulsa.
We did see him in Tulsa. That’s funny. That was for your birthday. What was it like going to the studio for the first time? Did it meet all of your expectations?
More, like the courtyard area outside the studio, I’m like, “They film videos here.” My eyes were out. Jess Sims was sitting at a table and my friend was a little shy but I’m not the shy one of the group. I was like, “She is outside the Peloton studio. She knows that there’s probably a much higher chance someone will approach her at the time. If she didn’t want to be bothered, she would not be sitting right there.
You’re not knocking on a bathroom stall door.
We’ve been there before when Cody and Alex Toussaint came through at two different times. Both of them had headphones on and hoodies down. They were laser focused and you can tell they were like, “Don’t bother me,” which is perfectly understandable and fine. You can tell when someone is open to approach and it is okay.
She was super nice as I expected. I was nervous about the cycling class. I got to do a ride with Cody and I was front row by the mirror. I didn’t think about the mirror until it was happening. I was like, “Okay.” I was nervous because I’ve never taken a group spinning class. I have the Bike+. I was a little nervous of how that would feel in the studio and it was fine.
The level of service was great. I’m there to take a class and it was like, “What do you need? Do you need me to adjust this for you? Do you need another towel?” It was very nice and everybody in the studio store was so nice. I thought they were very clear with their expectations which I appreciated because I was nervous about that deal. Having clear rules and stuff helped me. I was nervous about what I was going to say to Cody. When it comes time, am I going to use something?
It depends on how hard the ride is.
I was nervous about what I would say. I felt good. I had previously met Matt Wilpers when I traveled to the New York City Marathon in November. I went to a Team Wilpers group run in Central Park. I’d already gotten through that nervous starstruck. For Cody, I didn’t know, but he was nice as can be. He saw my Star Wars tattoo and immediately start talking about Star Wars and rides at Disney World. It felt very comfortable.
What’s your Star Wars tattoo?
I have a Rebel sign.
Disney Runs
That’s neat. That’s fun. You said you’re into Disney Runs. You do the Disney Marathons. What is your favorite place in Disney to visit?
It depends on what I want. If I’m going for a go-go-go vacation or if I am there for maybe a Dopey weekend, I want to have a spacious area or a quiet area so I can try to rest because that’s a hard part of traveling for any race. You want to go see all the things but you need to chill out. It depends on what the mood is. I travel to Disney probably more than the average person.
We are big fans of Disney, so we go every couple of years at the minimum.
I know isn’t a lot to some people and it’s a crazy amount to others.
If it were up to Tom, we would be there every year but I would like to see other places in the world.
That’s what I’ve cut for. I can take you to fifteen different countries. I can show you the world.
I want to see the real thing.
We are annual pass holders who live in Oklahoma, but we go enough that it makes sense. Now that our sons getting a little bit older. We always go in July, a week-long trip where we meet up with our friends and enjoy ourselves.
That sounds wonderful.
Do you do DVC or do you get in a room every time?
I’m a travel agent who specializes in Disney travel.
You got the hook-up.
I see you. This is her part-time gig, so she hooks herself up. This is smart. Take your passions. Very smart. Well done.
It’s all research.
Of course, it is. You need to know all of the things so you can tell people that, “This makes a lot of sense.” Since you love Disney that much, did you get a chance to go to the Star Wars thing that they did, their little cruise thing that happened?
The Star Cruiser? I did not. It wasn’t in my budget. It wasn’t in like to pay for my whole family and then nobody else was as crazy as me to want to go in on it.
Did you watch the three-hour video about it?
There’s an amazing YouTube video that goes into a very deep dive into every detail.
I watched it one day when I was at work. My day job is booking an arena and we were doing graduation. In some days we’re doing four for graduations. I might be there from 7:00 in the morning to 11:00 at night. I have been nothing but time on my hands. I was like, “I’ll watch this and see if it holds my interest or whatever. I can let it play while I’m doing other thing.” Three hours later, I’m like, “Holy crap. This is insane.”
I knew that’s how he would be so I sent it. I watched eight minutes of it and I was like, “I do not have time for this. Here, Tom. You watch this.”
She knew that I would be like, “Get a load of this,” and I gave her the 45-minute version of it.
The video covers all the things that went right.
Also, all the things that went wrong, especially at the end when they’re trying to cheap out on it. It’s totally worth watching. This lady does a great job.
Very good job of breaking it down based on Tom’s review.
Leaderboard Name
What is your leaderboard name?
It is JediJen11.
I was about to say, “Is it Star Wars based?” Yes, it is. That’s awesome.
There was one time that there’s a Sam Yo stretch that uses like Princess Leia’s theme or something. I have it bookmarked and it was a random Friday evening. I was doing this stretch and the only other person in there also had a Star Wars leaderboard name. I was like, “This is Peloton nerd.” It’s Friday night. I think Star Wars people are in the Star Wars stretch.
The Venn diagram.
Sam Yo is right in the middle of it and I love him.
Favorite Instructors
The Venn diagram is not circles. It’s two Death Stars. Does that mean Cody is your favorite instructor or your preferred instructor?
I feel like when I saw the question, I was like, “I don’t know.” I have my go-tos and not everyone had a fair shot. I will say that because I love who I love. I don’t have all the time to do all the classes.
You can’t date all the guys on Match. You don’t have time.
Narrow it down.
I always have Cody. I usually will do Cody stuff on Friday. Matt Wilpers, I jive with his way of training and that makes sense to me. I’m very mathematical. I love it. As I said, it works for me. Power Zone training has changed everything for me. I love it. I like a good playlist. I love taking classes with Ben. I love Susie because I appreciate that she’s an actual endurance runner. I love taking running classes with different instructors, but you can tell when they’re not an endurance runner.
I should not say this because I’m going to put in the universe and it’s going to happen, but they’re not going to have you be on 8% for twenty minutes. I feel like I can listen to the calls and follow and it’s going to be a workout I’m looking for. I like to take a variety. Who doesn’t love a good stretch with Adrien Williams?
You dabble with all of them.
When Jon Hosking came on the treadmill.
As I told you earlier, I had twelve and a half mile run, so I took a lot of classes because I’m super slow when I run. That equals a lot of classes that I can take. One of the classes I took was a Jon Hosking run and it happened to be the one where he was talking about four years since the first-time he had taught a group fitness class. He was talking about how important that milestone was to him. Also, he was talking about how shy and introverted he was. That blew my mind because I was like, “What? Jon Hosking shy and introverted? No, I don’t believe you.” That blew my mind. That was crazy.
Advice
Do you have any advice for people just now entering the world of Peloton?
I say to dable in a little bit of everything and then you’ll find your group because my favorite instructor might not be your favorite instructor. Try different classes that you don’t normally do because you might find something. I like strength training a lot more. I don’t even know that I ever did it before. Try something new. I feel like it provides a safe space because you’re not worried about other people who might be in the class with you and many different things for you to try. Give everything a shot and go for it.
That’s good advice.

That’s perfect. It’s going to make it easy. It’s nice that you think about the stalker for once.
Who would ever think about a stalker and what they’re going through?
Jen does.
Thank you very much for joining us. We appreciate it.
Thank you for having me. This was super fun.
